an Antonio’s Riverwalk has long been known for it’s incredible views and ambiance, and now has another truly inspiring reason to boast. The luxuri-

ous Hotel Valencia, the city’s only contemporary small luxury hotel, is nestled along the world-famous River-walk offering guests breathtaking views and amenities while bringing an exclusive brand of luxury to this tour-ist-friendly region.Old World meets New World The Hotel Valencia offers guests a blend of timeless and romantic sights, sounds and scenes. The hotel’s interior incorporates elements of nature to create a one-of-a-kind, yet timeless look. The hotel’s architecture features the rich, deep color finishes of a Tuscan farmhouse set against a dis-tinct backdrop, with step-out balconies, plastered vault dome ceilings reminiscent of a 15th century monastery and trickling water over candle-lit brick walls. The second floor of the property boasts the hip “V Bar” - where locals and hotel guests can mingle and take in the breathtaking views of the Riverwalk. Venture up to the third floor and get taken away to another world in the open-air courtyard with Los Ange-les-based designer, Dodd Mitchell’s signature reflect-ing pond, which sits at the base of a dramatic fountain backlit by a rhythmic line of fire. Amenities and More Hotel Valencia features a number of amenities unique to the city, including complimentary high-speed Internet access available throughout the hotel. Technol-ogy makes going from curbside to bedside a non-stop trip. All guest rooms feature a posh, custom-made, seven-layer “Hotel Valencia Bed,” wrapped in luxurious cotton linens and topped with a down-filled comforter and a lush faux mink throw. Guests can melt into the down-stuffed leather club chair or ottoman and enjoy the 70-channel cable television line-up. Bathrooms come equipped with extra long, shawl collared waffle weave bathrobes and oversized waffle

From Ser-rano Ham-Wrapped Mahi Mahi to Provencal Herb-encrusted Striped Sea Bass, Balfour adds his own personal touch to all of the menu items. ince opening its doors in 2006, Caliente Harley-Davidson has been doing steady business by

supplying the hottest bikes to Harley lovers as San Antonio’s premier Har-ley dealership. Caliente Harley-Davidson is a 40,000-square-foot facility that offers the latest Harley models along with clothes and accessories. It features a 15,000-square-foot showroom, customer lounge with free Internet, classrooms for training courses and on-site rentals. Managing Partner Fred Boss-hardt took time out to talk about the dealership’s support of the upcom-ing Muscular Dystrophy Association Black and Blue gala and the hottest deals around. What separates Caliente from other Harley dealerships: As San Antonio’s premier Harley dealer-ship, it’s important to us to provide significant value to customers in these tough economic times. We are able to provide this through the quality of staff and the facility we have, as well as our products and services. We’re proud to be San Antonio’s only locally-owned Harley dealer-ship, and we are a drug-free workplace. Tell me about the 2nd annual MDA Black and Blue gala: The purpose of the gala is to raise funds for re-search on neuromuscu-lar diseases that affect more than one million Americans. Last year, we raised $20,000. We’re still working out details, but this year’s event will be sometime in November. Ruben V is on board to provide entertainment. You can check www.calienteharley.com for updates.

S

Caliente Harley-Davidson

Why does Caliente support local charities: My wife, (co-owner) Paige, and business partner, Bob Beadle, and I

believe in supporting the com-munity. We’re very fortunate that we have a strong, loyal cus-tomer base, and it’s important to give back to those in need. What was hot this past summer for Harley fans: Har-ley has some great models for 2009, and the 2010 models will be coming out soon. The hot thing right now is the great deals on the current year mod-els. The engineering design changes they did for 2009 are outstanding. This along with the updated style points really make for a great bike. How do you keep cool in this blistering Texas heat: I drink a lot of liquids, and when I get

on my bike I try to ride during hours when it’s not so hot. But it’s always cool when you’re on a Harley.

radled on 192 acres of virgin rainforest in the embrace of St Lucia’s World Heritage-listed

Pitons it is hard to imagine a location more conducive to re-laxation and rejuvenation than Jalousie Plantation’s Rainforest Spa. Widely regarded as the island’s spiritual heart, the lush foliage and soaring mountain vistas of Val des Pitons provide the perfect backdrop for guests wishing to unwind and to expe-rience a period of re-creation in its truest sense—a time for reflection, renewal and a break from the everyday stresses of life. In addition to the luxurious international Flora Spa treat-ments, the spa menu features all-natural local treatments which make extensive use of coconut, bananas, fresh aloe, cocoa, honey and other locally-grown fruit and herbs. There are seven treatment rooms at the Rainforest Spa and two private outdoor treatment cabanas with panoramic views so that clients have the option of having their treatments in air-condi-tioned comfort or au naturel in the shadow of the majestic Pitons. A separate salon spe-cialises in manicures, pedi-cures, bridal make-up and hair services. BEAUTY BY NATURE’S BOUNTY As everything goes or-ganic, Jalousie’s Rainforest Spa features a selection of treatments designed to be as nourishing on the outside of the body, as their ingredients are to the inside. Free from chemicals, these all-natural rituals utilize the bounty of St Lucia unleashing beauty secrets the islanders have known for centuries.

Jalousie Plantation, St. Lucia

Bananas, the local pride, to firm, tighten and smooth away wrinkles; coconut to exfoliate, aloe vera to rejuvenate and rich cocoa butter to heal and hydrate…pampering the skin has never made mouths water as these treatments do. The Rainforest Spa also has a range of signature treatments de-signed to connect clients to Jalousie Plantation’s very special location—harnessing the nourishing proper-ties of nearby volcanic springs, and fertile cocoa plantations. The following rituals are among Jalousie Plantation’s unique spa experiences: Sensational Cocoa Melange This sensual journey begins with a tour of the neighbouring Fond Doux Estate which highlights the history of cocoa. Clients can see how cocoa is grown, taste the raw beans and see how they are dried in the sun

before being roasted and pounded into fragrant cocoa sticks. Each person will return to Jalousie with a cocoa stick which is then grated, mixed with locally produced honey and used as a mask for the entire body. A cocoa oil massage follows and the whole experience is capped off with a mug of cocoa tea and other chocolate treats.

Solar Sun Soother Aloe Vera Wrap Fresh aloe is used in a wrap crafted to soothe, hy-drate and decrease redness and itching associated with overexposure to the sun. Suphur Seduction This treatment begins with an unforgettable trip to St Lucia’s very own Volcanic Sulphur Springs and a tour of the bubbling mud pools of this ancient and active volcano. Therapists guide and care for each client,

slathering them in mineral-rich sulphur mud which is then left to tighten and dry in the sun, aiding in the natural exfoliation and detoxification of the skin. The next stop

Caribbean Glow Sea Salt and freshly grated coconut are used in this gentle and reviving body scrub. The scrub exfoliates the dead skin cells, helps circulation, smoothes and rejuvenates skin. Skin Precision Secret banana and honey facial Banana and honey are combined to create a moisture-rich mask which nourishes and firms dry skin. Brown Sugar Scrub Brown sugar, oatmeal, coconut and essential oils are combined in this scrub which exfoliates and replen-ishes the skin to leave it silky and smooth. AYUREVEDIC TREAT-MENTSThe Rainforest also offers an extensive range of Ayurevedic treatment for com-plete well-being and balance. Ayurveda is a system of natu-ral healing which evolved on the In-dian Sub- Continent some 3,000-5,000 years ago. In traditional Ayurveda it is be-lieved that human beings are consid-ered to be an inverted tree with the head as the root, the body as the trunk and limbs asthe branches of the tree. Ayurveda is a series of holistic practices that encom-pass yoga, meditation, detoxification, massage, herbs and tinctures all specific to the individuals ‘dosha’ char-acteristics. The three mind-body constitutions or ‘doshas’ are Vata, Pitta and Kapha. A brief questionnaire (dosha analysis) is given to identify the dosha type that is most prominent and the appropriate products to be used. Among the Ayurvedic treatments available are:

Abhyanga, synchronized massage A unique four-hand massage con-ducted by two therapists. Warm nourishing ‘dosha’ specific oils are worked into the body while providing a smooth, rhythmical massage flow working on the energy points of the body (chakras). Shirodhara This ancient Ayurvedic treatment is one of the most relaxing therapies, it awakens the third eye (ajna chakra) and lulls the entire body into a state of tranquility and peace, creating a soothing effect on the nervous system. It consists of massage to the head and shoulders to relax, fol-lowed by a streamline flow of dosha balancing oil that is slowly poured onto the forehead and a foot mas-sage.

Udvartana A specialised herbal treatment for weight reduction, cellulite and thorough exfoliation. A blend of purifying herbs is vigorously massaged into the body for ap-proximately 35 minutes to detoxify the blood, nourish the outer tissue layers and breakdown fatty deposits. This concludes with a gentle touch over the body with a soothing herbal gel. A range of treatments is also available on Jal-ousie Plantation’s perfect white sand beach. Enjoy everything from a relaxing shoulder and scalp massage with cooling menthol, to a mini-manicure or pedicure—the emphasis is on winding away cares for the per-fect vacation experience. hat do you get when you mix Las Vegas with the Texas Hill Coun-

try? Sounds strange, but it’s the best way to describe L’auberge du Lac Casino Resort - an oasis in the Louisiana outback.Incredible Scenery L’auberge du Lac is just a few miles off of I-10 in Lake Charles. Thehotel was inspired by the Hill Country - one of the most gorgeous areas in the entire country - and it shows. As soon as you walk inside, you can’t help but notice the dark woods, natural stones and fireplaces in the lobby. One of the most interesting things about L’auberge du Lac is, likethe mega-resorts in Las Vegas, everything you need to relax or have fun is all located on one property.Plenty of Rooms First, let’s start with the hotel rooms. There are more than 1,000 ofthem at L’auberge du Lac. The stan-dard rooms have that Las Vegas elegance - easily comparable with the best hotels on the Strip. There are also three different types of suites here. They feature hardwood ceilings - a truly unique feature that will cause you stop and stare for a few minutes. The best part of it all, the rooms have breathtaking views of either thepool or golf course.Outdoor Recreation Speaking of pools, you’ve prob-ably heard about the pools at Hard Rock or Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas - and this one at L’auberge du Lac ranks right up there. It has everything you need to relax: two huge, swim-

W ming areas (includ-ing an adults area), a lazy river with in-ner tubes to float, aswim-up bar and pri-vate cabanas. You can also grab lunch at Nevie BeachClub. One piece of advice: be there for a Thursday during the summer soyou can witness the Party by the Pool. It’s just you and a couple thousand of your closest friends, with some great mu-sic by national actslike Everclear and

Blue October.Golf Anyone? L’auberge du Lac also has its own 18-hole champion-ship golf course, designed by Tom Fazio. You really get the experience of the Louisiana environment at the Con-

traband Bayou Golf Club because it’s built right into the course. If battling the lakes and marshes is too much for you, there’s also a driving range to practice on your game.Shopping and Spas If golf’s not your thing, how about some shopping? L’auberge du Lac has its own area of shops where you can buy everything from jewelry to clothes to lingerie. After that, you can head over to the spa and get a massage. A day at the pool, golf course or shops can build up quite an appetite.Luckily, L’auberge du Lac has several restaurants to keep you well fed.The lineup is highlighted by Snake River Grill - the steakhouse that madeits name in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. ’m starting to get pretty spoiled. I’ve had the chance to eat at some of the top steakhouses in the

world recently. Now I can add Snake RiverGrill to that list. There are only two Snake River Grills in the entire country. The original is in Jackson Hole, Wyoming - one of the most gor-geous skiing spots you‘ll ever see. The only other location is inside L’Auberge du Lac Hotel andCasino in Lake Charles, Louisi-ana.Incredible Ambiance As soon as walk in, you instantly feel like you’re in some type of exclusive ski lodge - a hard feat to pull off in southwest Louisiana. There are dark woods ev-erywhere, a fireplace, natural stones. It really sets the mood for a fantastic dining experience.Delectable Dining The menu has something for everyone and they‘ve catered it to bring in the local flavor. Start with an ap-petizer. They have everything from onion rings battered in Shiner Bock beer to Louisiana crab cakes. But this is asteakhouse - so they also have delicious prime sirloin

Snake River Grillsteak tacos and lamb chop lollipops. From there, it’s on to the main course. I had the 14- ounce New York strip and a baked potato. It definitely hit the spot. The steak was so tender and juicy. It practically melted in my mouth. It really was a perfect piece of meat. The menu is also full of other steaks - filet mignon, porterhouse, ribeye and even Kobe strip loins. Picking a cut of meat (and the sauce to accompany it) may be the toughest deci-sion you make here.

If steak isn’t your thing, don’t worry. Snake River Grill has an extensive list of fish, Maine lobster and chicken to choose from. One tip - if you’re by yourself, avoid the wait and try to sit at the bar. They offer a full menu there and you can usually grab a spot immediately.Spoil Yourself So go ahead and spoil yourself. Take a break from the gambling and the shopping and the golf to enjoy Snake River Grill.

other location in the entire country. And what ca-sino is complete without a buffet? You can eat until your heart’s content at Le Beaucoup Buffet. There’s also Le Café, which is open 24 hours a day, Jack Daniel’s Bar and Grill and Asia. L’auberge also has a coffee shop and a dessert shop tofinish off the meal - no mat-ter where you eat.For the Gamblers...And finally, there’s the casino. The action never stops here - it’s going 24

hours a day. The casino features 30,000 square feet of gaming. Everything from slots to blackjack to roulette and all the other favorites - it’s all here. There’s even a high-limit room, if you’re feeling adventurous. So throw out everything you may have heard or remember about Lake Charles. L’auberge du Lac changes all of that. For more information on L’Auberge du Lac Resort,

as Vegas is all about indulgence. It’s about the big-gest and the best.

So when it came time to kick off the Las Vegas section of The Hotel Guide,it was a no-brainer to start with The Palaz-zo. It’s one of the new kingsof luxury on the Las Vegas Strip.

Something SpecialAs soon as you step foot into

The Palazzo, you instantly know you’re about to experi-ence something special. The lobby not only features a beautiful,two-story waterfall, but also a living garden that changes themes every few weeks. And the service? You’re treated like a high roller – even if your bank roll doesn’t quite match.

sino (with the coolest lighted columns ever seen, by the way). Blackjack, craps, baccarat, roulette – you name it. Tables are everywhere, with denominations for every budget. More than a thousand slot machines are ringing for you – all the way up to $500 a spin.

The Palazzo also features one of the most amazing Race & Sports Books I’ve ever seen. Forget the cramped and uncomfortable chairs of other casinos, this one fea-tures theater-style seating. You can even rent it out for big events.

A Suite LifeThe luxury doesn’t stop there. The Palazzo is known

for its amazing suites – all 3,066 of them. What’s more impressive: the Italian marble countertops – or the amaz-ing beds? What about the three flat-screen TVs in each suite? Don’t forget about the remote-controlled blinds and the unbelievable views.

For an extra $100 a night, you can kick it up a notch with The Palazzo’s concierge service. You’ll gain access to the unbelievable Concierge Suite on the 23rd floor. Breakfast, lunch, hors d’oeuvres and an open bar are all yours for the taking. You’ll even have a private elevator back to your suite – just to feel even more special.

L

Delectable DiningIf you’re looking for a delicious meal, The Palazzo

features more than 15 restaurants. Celebrity chefs Wolfgang Puck, Mario Batali, Charlie Trotter and Emeril Lagasse all have restaurants here. In fact, a close friend-said he got goose bumps after taking a bite at Emeril’s Table 10 restaurant. Yes, it’s that good.

Outstanding ShoppingOnce you find time to venture away from your room

and the casino, the luxury continues at The Shoppes at The Palazzo. No store defines luxury like Barneys New York and the largest Barneys in the world is right here at The Palazzo.

Entertain MeYou can then visit the Strip’s only Lamborghini deal-

ership and even dine with an amazing view of the showroom floor. The Palazzo is also home to the world-renowned Canyon Ranch SpaClub and seven pools. Throw in the Tony-award winning musical “Jersey Boys” and the hip nightclub Lavo, and there’s no reason to even leave the hotel.

The Palazzo means “the palace” in Italian. So go ahead and allow yourself be treated like royalty.

or those looking to make the most of their travel budget while visiting the “Entertainment Capital of

the World,” there are several options for the value-conscious visitor. Here are just a few: Free attractions line the Las Vegas Strip and they’re not hard to find. The Mirage’s volcano erupts in a lagoon filled with waterfalls and palm trees every 15 minutes from dusk to midnight. The Mirage has joined forces with legendary Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart, Indian music sensation Zakir Hussein, and the Fountains of Bellagio design firm WET to create an all-new audio/visual spectacle for its famous volcano attration. WET forges a primal volcanic environment of sound, light, music and heat with choreographed FireShooters, which send mas-sive fireballs more than 12 feet into the air. The volcano attraction features a state-of-the-art sound system with music and sound specially created by Hart and Hussein. Next door, nightly passersby can catch the “Sirens of TI” at Treasure Island. The revamped version showcases the popular pyrotechnic war as male renegade pirates battle “sexy sirens” of Sirens’ Cove. Performances run every 90 minutes beginning at 7 p.m. Meanwhile, the world-famous Fountains at Bellagio thrill visitors with more than 1,000 water-emitting devices choreographed to music by artists such as Frank Sinatra, Elton John, Whitney Houston and Andrea Bocelli. At The Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino, the newly rein-vented “Show in the Sky” features dancers in costume fashions on floats suspended above the crowd. Three dif-ferent performances include sexy and seductive “scenes” coordinated to today’s top music hits. Downtown’s famous, casino-lined street is now the Fremont Street Experience, a 175,700-square-foot pedes-trian area covered by a continuous canopy studded with more than 14 million lights. Each evening on the hour, this canopy comes alive with spectacular light-and-sound shows. From Las Vegas Hilton to Luxor to JW Marriott, most major resorts offer free lounge entertainment that is

Budget Travel in Sin CityLas Vegasavailable practically around the clock.

Great Attractions Low-priced attractions abound as well. “The Mac King Comedy Hour” at Harrah’s Las Vegas is a great show value, with tickets priced at less than $24.95. The show contains quirky humor, visual gags and King’s sleight-of-hand, all deliv-ered in a tongue-in-cheek fash-ion.

Cheap Buffets For lunchtime bargain-hunt-ers, nothing beats the classic $1.99 shrimp cocktail at the Golden Gate Hotel & Casino, the oldest hotel in Las Vegas. For gourmet on a budget, many Las Vegas buffets now offer fare

from around the world and at a reasonable price. The Rio All-Suites Hotel & Casino’s Carnival World Buffet offers more 300 offerings and 70 dessert dishes from around the world - from pizza to omelets to teppan yaki to fresh pasta. Another example is Paris Las Ve-gas’ Le Village Buffet which showcases five provinces of France. Each station is themed for a particular province and features a different facade designed to replicate the architecture of that region. What could be more romantic than renewing your wedding vows in Las Vegas? Show her that you love her all over again with reasonably priced Renewal of Vows packages. Priced from just $195, couples can relive their special day at Chapel of the Flowers. Renewal of Vows includes use of the chapel, a candle-lighting cer-emony, traditional music, courtesy limousine service, a DVD of the ceremony and much more.Shopping Discounts Looking for discounts at the mall? Go to www.Visit-LasVegas.com. Under “Shopping,” users can download the Shop Las Vegas Passport coupon redeemable for gifts and discounts at most Las Vegas malls including Fashion Show, Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood and Las Vegas Premium Outlets to name a few. While you’re at the malls, check out the variety of free enter-tainment they offer, from singing gondoliers at Grand Canal Shoppes at The Venetian to the Forum Shops’ Ro-man statues that come to life inside Caesars Palace.

ver the past 15 years & 350,000 miles traveling on the rails across the US

has taught me more about life that I can have ever imagined. I recently finished a 3 1/2 week run covering 6.500 miles. Along the way, I re-connected with a few old friends & made many new ones. Those of you that are tagged to left of this notes were tagged for a SPE-CIFIC reason. Each of you have at one time entered my life and had such an impact that I was prompted to express myself the only way I know how-through the written word. Remember it’s not really about the destination but the journey. Perhaps one day each of you will travel with me on the Big Iron Horse, all it takes is one time and you’ll understand the intense feeling of complete freedom.

Our individual journeys take us into many unexpected situations where we encounter a wide variety of people—some quite like ourselves and some very different. We cannot anticipate these meetings, but we can make the most of them when they take place. When we are courteous as a matter of course and open-minded in our assessment of the individuals whose lives briefly touch our own, we are more apt to stumble upon surprising gems of wisdom that open our eyes to new worlds of possibility. Every person we meet can affect us profoundly, just as every situation we find ourselves in can teach us something new.

To fully embrace this fact, it is essential that we acknowl-edge that everyone is valuable in their own way and ca-pable of expanding our horizons. Since we never know when we will happen upon those individuals who will un-veil truths before us, we should extend to all people the same generous level of kindness, care, compassion, and understanding. When we assume everyone we meet is special and treat them as such, we can develop a strong rapport quickly. By making an effort to adopt a positive attitude toward others at all times, we ensure that our

Javier Garza

emotions do not blind us to wisdom that may be lurking in difficult or distressing situations. We are accordingly receptive to knowledge that comes to us in the form of examples, advice, and direct teaching.

These brief relationships ultimately have the potential to enrich our lives in a very concrete way. But the wisdom we gain is proportional to the attention we pay to the world around us. The responsibility is on us to maintain a state of awareness that allows us to recognize when we are in the presence of someone consciously or uncon-sciously in possession of knowledge that will change us significantly. When we are cognizant of the potential for unexpected enlightenment, we make a habit of turning strangers into friends, thus ensuring that we are never without a font of wisdom from which to draw.

A many thanks to all of you listed to the left, who knows when our paths will cross. Until then, listen for the sounds of the train whistles; I’ll be at the platform shortly antici-pating your arrival.

he French Riviera... It’s absolute georgeousness amid humming mopeds and pooches pooping

on the sidewalk... you look up at the snow covered French Alps on one side and the Mediterranean on the other and you’re in heaven. While walking on the Promenade des Anglais in Nice you might pass by a pair of 80 year old women walking their old little pooches while being swiftly passed by a shirtless man on rollerblades. It truly is a place where everyone can relax and take a deep breath. Europeans walk and walking in most any city on the Côte d’Azur can get you to beachside restaurants, pubs, shopping and entertainment. During the summer months there are lovely, but pricey, restaurants along any of the beaches. In Nice make sure to breeze through the Zone Pietone for some shopping and eating (La Pizza Cresci for unbelievable pizza). The Cours Saleya in old town Nice has a breathtaking flower market in the AM, great dining (Le Safari) and a fun night market with lots of things you will think you need. Buy a table cloth from Provence to remember the trip and eat up on the baguettes because it’s impossible to find such crispy and soft perfection in bread anywhere else. Cities along the coast will give you a fantastic rock (not sand) beach experience, high end shopping if you wish, Italian gelato and food, and people watching... Saint Tropez, Cannes, Antibes, Monaco. If you are looking to take a day or two away from the beach try St. Paul de Vence, Biot or Eze. The his-toric village of St. Paul de Vence is a great place to take your time and wander in and out of unique art galleries and shops. It’s quaint atmosphere is complemented with stone steps leading you up and through the village to

Nice & French Riviera

an amazing view over the cemetary and surrounding hillside. Travel back down from the village and any art lover

must stop at the Fondation Maeght. It’s on exceptionally kept grounds with many modern pieces housed inside. The village of Biot brings you glass like you have never seen! The glassblowers are right before your eyes creating the pieces that they sell. There is also a wonderful village to shop for pottery and enjoy lunch. Eze is a clifftop village between Nice and Monaco. You are in for a hike up, but it’s worth the sore legs and sweat to see the amazing sea view from so high up. There is a unique cactus garden at the very top along with, of course, wonderful restau-rants.

A few pointers:• Rent a car and drive the coast to Monaco.• If you stay in Nice, pick a hotel between the fancy schmancy Hotel Negresco and Old Nice… there are plenty to choose from.• Spend the extra cash to rent a parasol and cot on the beach and take time to relax and listen to the water crash into the rocks on the beach.• Try using their language (even if you feel dumb) because they will appreciate it.

y husband and I have a love of traveling; whether it’s for business or for pleasure. Even when a trip originates as

business we somehow manage to eek out a day or so to make it seem like a vacation. In September he had a business trip to Venice and we decided to extend our stay and tack on two other destinations; Florence and Rome. One of the first things we learned when looking at a map is that city names are in Italian so when you’re looking to book a trip to Venezia, Firenze or Roma; make sure you acquaint yourself with the proper names of the cities.

Our trip to Venice was quick but enjoyable. While it was a business trip we managed to share a full day of activities to include a visit to Murano, Burano and Torcello Islands, respectively. We also visited the Isola San Francesco del Deserto; a monastery on an island. During our brief three day visit we stayed at the Bauer Hotel. As this portion of our trip was hosted we didn’t go on line prior to the trip to read trip reviews or map out our activities; as we allowed our hosts to make those arrangements. However we did do our homework in advance for our trips to Florence and Rome. Whenever we travel internationally we pre-arrange; on line, the tour or tours we wish to take. We also try to pre-book trains and rental cars. Our extended trip also included stays at Hilton branded hotels as we are Hilton Grand Vacation Club owners. We suggest that you do your homework and if you are not brand loyal or a particular brand owner; try to stay at a hotel in the heart of a city.

ItalySometimes when redeeming points, the hotels you stay in tend to be a bit of a distance away from the city center. Work with you hotel concierge. They are there to assist you and are gracious in doing so.

As our time was limited in each city; we decided to utilize train transportation versus a rental car. I would recommend if you have the time, to rent a car. Experiencing the drive and scenery is what makes memories as well.

We traveled by train from Venice to Florence. We pre-arranged a city tour of Florence, knowing our time would be limited. The tour began as a city overview by bus highlighting landmarks throughout the city then transformed into a walking

tour which concluded with a private tour of the Uffizi Museum. Our second day we traveled to Pisa by train. This allowed us the necessary time to tour the Leaning Tower of Pisa and Duomo. Our third and final day consisted of a driving tour of the Chianti regions which included stops in San Gimignano, Monte Riggioni and Siena and wrapped up with a wine tasting. Traveling

with a limited time frame really forces your hand as to the selection of activities you wish to partake in. Again; do your homework and narrow down your selections of what you really desire to see and do.

From Florence we traveled to Rome where we were lucky to spend four days. Rome is fantastically filled with architecture and sights. Because we arrived to Rome on a weekend; we pre-arranged our Vatican Museum tour for a Monday. This allowed us to utilize our entire weekend to tour on our own. Almost every site we toured in Rome we managed to

see on foot. We attempted to keep our cab fares to a minimum plus walking allows you to acquaint yourself directionally and get a real feel for a city. Some famous Roman landmarks we toured consisted of The Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, the Victor Emanuelle Monument,

Experiencesthe Pantheon and Coliseum as well as the Four Rivers Fountain. And lastly, of course, St. Peter’s Basilica and Vatican City.

When traveling to the destination of your choice; we believe in maximizing the time available there with a combination of pre-planned activities that also leave room for spontaneity. Whether your love of travels take you nationally or internationally; do what you love to do when there!
