Think outside the box: Where else can we find vernacular architecture?
• Humans are just one type of animal!
• Birds, chimps, termites, ants, spiders, bees, mice, beavers, and fish are just a few examples of “animal architectects!”
Amazing birds builders!

Vernacular Architecture: Biomimicry
The Challenge!• Create a sculpture symbolizing a shelter structure. Use objects,
detritus, and natural materials from your everyday life
• The technique you’ll be using is assemblage: a sculptural technique of organizing or composing into a unified whole a group of unrelated and often fragmentary or discarded objects.
• I will be providing cardboard as one of the elements you can choose to use
Think!• What other materials are readily accessible to me? These
could be naturally occurring, or a result of my consumption patterns
• Can I learn anything about building from the indigenous population or local wildlife?
Reminder!• Bring your sculpture materials next class!!!!
The House my Habits Built• Review:• Vernacular architecture: based on local needs and
construction materials, and reflecting local traditions. Vernacular architecture tends to evolve over time to reflect the environmental, cultural, technological, and historical context in which it exists (wiki)
• Assemblage: an artistic process consisting of making 3d or 2d artistic compositions by putting together found objects (wiki)
• Sculpture: the branch of visual arts that operates in three dimensions

Sculptural considerations• How am I going to connect these different pieces together?• Sculptures can be viewed from all angles: think about top and
bottom views of a sculpture as well as front, back, and sides

Assessment• Does my structure represent a form of shelter?• Is it constructed using locally procured resources?• Is it sturdy and well built?• Is it unique to me? Does it reflect some aspect of my life,
surroundings, or habits?

Good Job!
Art Show!• What was your favorite part of this process? The most
frustrating?
• What were your experiences during the building process? Did you learn some techniques along the way?
• What about your sculpture is unique to you?
• What do you know now that you didn’t before?
