With over $1 billion of machine cargo at any time waiting to be shipped to more than 200 destinations worldwide, Caterpillar is looking for high velocity and lack of variability when orchestrating its supply chains. We can continue to evaluate the need for any ports within Europe, but Antwerp continues to be the best option for many of our machines. Antwerp is integrated with all sailing options, destinations and major vessel lines, ensuring sailings on a very frequent basis. Choosing Antwerp ensures good overland transit and high productivity and quality in cargo handling. This has been a success story for us and we continue to put more and more volume through this port. Caterpillar is committed to Antwerp, we get great service from this port and its service providers. Caterpillar knows where it’s going, we’re going to the Port of Antwerp.”

For more than 30 years now Magemar has brought quarry stone to Antwerp from places such as India, South Africa and Brazil, distributing the products all over the European hinterland through its Natural Stone Centre in the Port of Antwerp. Loading and unloading granite blocks is specialist work: thanks to the expertise of the Antwerp dock workers and the extensive collaboration with our various logistics partners in the Port of Antwerp we are able to bring the rough granite blocks to our end customers successfully every time. The Port of Antwerp is a reliable partner in our supply chain.”

“ A granite supply chain: unique partnership in the Port of Antwerp.”

Tom FRANCE cATERpiLLARDirector Global Transportation

“ Using the Port of Antwerp allows us to signifi cantly reduce our supply chain variability, one of our major business goals.”

With an extensive range of specialised terminals and highly qualifi ed personnel for the handling, storage and additional logistics services for all breakbulk goods, the Port of Antwerp offers you the highest levels of quality and productivity. Employing an innovative workforce model, the Port can call on the resources of a large body of competent, highly-trained professionals. Thanks to a unique shift system, the port is in permanent operation 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

In addition to the big fi ve (steel & non ferro, fruit & perishables, forest products, project cargo, ro/ro), it goes without a saying that the Port of Antwerp also handles general cargo such as granite, big bags, crates, bags, etc.

STEEL & NON-FERROThe Port of Antwerp is the largest steel port in the world, annually handling around 10 million tonnes of steel and non-ferrous metals, of which 90% conventionally. It is the port of choice for virtually all European steel manufacturers, handling more than 50% of all imports and exports to and from the European hinterland and accommodating a large range of products from coils and sheets to tubes, beams, pipes and wires.

Handling and innovationAs a strong believer in breakbulk cargo, the Port of Antwerp and its operators continue to invest in the growth of the port’s breakbulk facilities. One of the major recent accomplishments in this area was the investment in an all weather terminal.

To ensure maximum productivity for loading and unloading the vessels, the steel terminals are equipped with the most advanced lifting devices to handle steel cargo, including coil tongs, coil nets, spreaders, hooks and shackles. Vacuum power lifters and magnet lifters are frequently used for loading or unloading trucks and trains.

Many customers use the Port of Antwerp as a distribution hub for their steel cargo, with a total covered storage capacity of over 5.5 million m² (1359 acres), to meet the specific requirements of each commodity. Close to 50 LME-certified warehouses are available for storage of non-ferrous metals and steel billets. Furthermore, outside space for storage is amply available.

Handling and innovationThe Antwerp Port Authority and its service providers continually invest in state-of-the-art equipment for loading, unloading and handling activities. Modern shore cranes discharge pallets smoothly.

As a pioneer in Europe since 2008, Antwerp has automated warehouses for palletised perishable cargo, allowing uninterrupted, cost-efficient handling.

Experienced professional labour

The big FivE in breakbulkThe Port of Antwerp combines a long tradition in breakbulk cargo, with state-of-the-art facilities. Handling around 17 million tonnes of steel, forest products, fruit, rolling stock and project cargo every year, the Port of Antwerp boasts the capacity, productivity, expertise and full range of services you would expect from one of the world’s largest ports. Offering excellent inland connections by road, rail or barge, it is little wonder the Port of Antwerp is Europe’s number 1 breakbulk port.
