DG Tilak’s remarks explained and stressed his theme as DG of “Service Without Boundaries”. He out- lined his goals for the coming year including enhancing the district and club communications and public relations by encouraging everyone to promote our club’s involve- ment in local and international projects. He urged continued contributions to the Rotary Foundation to further the foundation’s humani- tarian efforts at home and throughout the world and to inspire new members to join our club and to become active in our causes. NATIONAL NIGHT OUT This Tuesday, August 7 th , the Rockaway Rotary Club will participate in the annual “National Night Out” in Rockaway Borough. This nationwide crime and drug prevention event is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW) and co-sponsored locally by the Rockaway Borough Police Department. CAMP MERRY HEART CLUB SERVICE DAY This Wednesday, August 8 th , District 7470 will participate in Service Club Day at Camp Merry Heart. The clubs of District 7470 have been supporting Camp Merry Heart since 1952, providing the upkeep of build- ings, donating camper scholarships and much need- ed supplies. Rotary is an important component of the camp’s success. The day will begin with a carnival for the campers and Rotary members from 3:00 to 5:00 PM. Jim Stu- art and the Rockaway Assembly of God Church are allowing us to utilize their popcorn machine for the carnival. Camp Mer- ry Heart is located at 21 O’Brien Road in Hackettstown, NJ. 1787 - The Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia began to debate the draft of the U.S. Constitution. 1806 - The Holy Roman Empire went out of existence as Emperor Francis II abdicated. 1890 - Cy Young achieved his first major league victory. He would accumulate 511 in his career. 1926 – Gertrude Ederle, 19, became the first American woman to swim the English Channel in 14 ½ hours. 1945 - The American B-29 bomber, known as the Enola Gay, dropped the first atomic bomb on an inhabit- ed area. The bomb named "Little Boy" was dropped over the center of Hiroshima, Japan. An estimated 140,000 people were killed.
