Robert W. Haley, M.D., is Professor of Internal Medicine, Director of the Division of Epidemiology in the Internal Medicine Department at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Cen-ter, and holder of the U.S. Armed Forces Veterans Distinguished Chair for Medical Research Honoring America's Gulf War Veterans.

He received his M.D. degree from UT Southwestern Medical School and served a residency in internal medicine at Dallas Park-land Memorial Hospital. He served as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Public Health Service for 10 years (1973-1983) at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), where he investigated epidemics and performed epidemiologic research.

In 1983, Dr. Haley founded the Division of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine at UT Southwestern. As an attending physi-cian at the Dallas VA Medical Center for 10 years (1985-1995) and Parkland Memorial Hospital for 19 years (1996-present), he super-vised patient care and taught medical students and residents.

Dr. Haley began his research career in 1970 in the UT South-western laboratory of Dr. James Luby doing laboratory and epide-miologic research on mosquito-borne epidemics of St. Louis en-cephalitis in Dallas and since has conducted research on the epi-demiology and prevention of hospital-acquired infections, hepati-tis C, Gulf War illness and West Nile encephalitis.

Beginning in 1994 and funded initially by the Perot Founda-tion, he has focused his research on understanding the nature and causes of the Gulf War syndrome in veterans of the 1991 Persian Gulf War. Following three landmark publications of initial findings in the January 15, 1997, issue of The Journal of the American Medical Association, he conducted a brain research program, congressionally funded through the Departments of De-fense and Veterans Affairs, to work out the mechanisms of brain injury in the veterans and identify tests and treatments for the

Gulf War illness. Key scientific publications reported sarin nerve agent exposure to troops in the 1991 Gulf War, a genetic predis-position that appears to link the illness to nerve gas, explaining many symptoms. His investigation also uncovered an excess of Lou Gehrig's disease in young Gulf War veterans.

In the past 10 years he has developed an advanced brain imaging center and designed a national survey of Gulf War veter-ans. Under a $33 million Congressional award sponsored by Sen-ator Kay Bailey Hutchison, he conducted a national survey and a large brain imaging program to explain more aspects of the illness and to develop a diagnostic approach and treatment. He is pre-sently completing a study of gene expression in Gulf War veterans

In 2013 Dr. Haley collaborated with epidemiologists at the Dal-las County Health Department in evaluating Dallas' 2012 epidemic of West Nile encephalitis, the largest in the nation. The study vali-dated a new approach to mosquito surveillance to provide early warning of future epidemics to allow preventive measures.

Dr. Haley served as the president and board chairman of the Dallas County Medical Society. As president of the Dallas County Medical Society and a member of the Texas Medical Association's House of Delegates, he has led efforts in the state to focus the support of organized medicine on public health problems related to air quality and environmental pollution and a clean sustainable energy supply for Texas.

Dr. Haley has published over 200 scientific papers, review articles, commentaries and letters in peer-reviewed scientific journals. He has lectured extensively throughout the U.S. and in many foreign countries. From 1985 to 2003 he lectured in all of the CDC national training courses for hospital epidemiologists. In 2004 he was elected to the Association of American Physicians, a select society for medical scientists.

Janie Loveless announced our Valentineʼs evening meeting on Thurs-day, February 12, with speaker Dale Han-sen. She said that the member bringing the most guests would win a Dale Hansen bobble-head. There will not be a meeting on Friday, February 13.

Last to speak today was Daniel Drabinski. He grew up in a steel town in New York, until his father moved the family to Philadelphia to attend Wharton School. He said he

bought his first stock at the age of ten. He went to work for various investment firms, including one in South Carolina where he lived on his sailboat. He went to work for a hedge fund that moved him to Dallas. When the recession hit, he realized that he was working a lot of hours away from his family. Now he works for Mass Mutual as an advisor on estate plan-ning and executive plans. He and his wife have two sons and a six-week old daughter.

disease that left him almost completely paralyzed. "I was completely blown away by the idea. For all these years, I didn't know the work they were doing," says Alex-ander, a practicing attorney in Dallas. "It's such a perfect fit for me."

In October, Alexander became a member of the Rotary E-Club of District 5810 during an induction ceremony held in his home, attended by Rotary's President Gary C.K. Huang through an online connection. He wants to be an ambassador for Rotary prom-oting the benefits of eradicating polio.
