LETTERMAN INFORMATION

As UGA football lettermen, we take immense pride in the University of Georgia and its traditions. To continue the University’s exceptional heritage, the UGA Football Lettermen’s Club has started a new tradition among those for who UGA has been more than an alma mater, but a way of life.

Bulldog Haven is a designated section of the historic Oconee Hill Cemetery that is open exclusively to UGA football letter-men, their spouses and families. Located ad-jacent to Sanford Sta-dium, Bulldog Haven offers a unique rest-ing place in the heart of the University of Georgia campus. This is Athens’ only cemetery desig-nated to honor and celebrate the lives of UGA football lettermen. We invite you to con-sider supporting Bulldog Haven by deciding now to invest in a plot for yourself and

your loved ones. Bulldog Haven is a non-profi t venture that

will support the maintenance and restoration of his-toric Oconee Hill Cemetery. In addition to the note-worthy University of Georgia personalities interred there, Oconee Hill Cemetery is also the resting place of many important fi gures in Georgia’s history. Private tours of Bulldog Haven are available by calling Sexton Brian Adler at 706.543.6262.

1971 Reunion On September 16, 2011, the Class of 1971 held their 40th year reunion at the Athens Country Club. They enjoyed a great night of catching up with one another and reminiscing about their days at UGA.

Running With the Bulldogs and the Bullsby Jeff Lewis

A happy accident of geography provided a good excuse for former Georgia lettermen Frank Ros, Richard Tardits, and Jeff Lewis to tour the Pyrenees Mountains by motorcycle and take part in the famous tradition of running with the bulls in Spain. Ros, who lettered from 1977-80 and served as team captain of the national championship team, is a native of Barcelona, Spain. Tardits, a native of Biarrits, France, starred for the Bulldogs from 1985-88. Barcelona and Biarritz are the diagonally opposed ends of the Pyrenees Mountains, which form the border between Spain and France. Lewis, a native of Chamblee, GA, who lettered from 1975-77, planned the tour and off they went along with friend Brian Conlon.

Renting Honda Goldwing 1800 motorcycles, we kicked off by visiting Frank’s mother, Pilar, and her husband, Pere, in Barcelona. After a delicious luncheon at the scenic “Swiss Catalonia” mountain restaurant of St. Bernat, we headed up the Mediterranean coastline (“Costa Brava”) before turning westward through Girona and up into the mountains. Sticking to two-lane highways, in order to enjoy the best of the beautiful scenery, we covered approximately 150-200 miles per day, with much pleasant interaction with the friendly locals, along with great enjoyment of the food and wines.

A typical day would fi nd us sleeping late, then Frank, Richard, and Brian going our for a morning run, while I slept later and then planned the day’s route. We would then enjoy a leisurely breakfast, pack the gear, and head off to the day’s adventures.

Lunch would typically follow two or three hours of riding. Often times, we discussed our days as Bulldogs footballers along with news about our families, or politics, or our work (Frank is a Vice President of Coca-Cola, I am an attorney with Arnall, Golden, & Gregory, Richard a real estate developer with his own company in France, and Brian the president of Inland Real Estate.) After lunch, we would ride another two or three hours before fi nding a hotel for the evening. As is typical in this region, dinner would not begin until 9:00 p.m. and end around 11:00 p.m.

Scenic areas covered on the initial stretch included Olot, the ski resort at La Molina, Andorra (a tiny principality), and the route through Pont de Suert on the N260 highway. At the halfway point, we stopped for two days at Richard’s golf course

development in Bagneres de Bigorre, where Frank and Brian joined Richard in a golf tournament with many of Richard’s former rugby teammates. From there, we headed south the “Yosemite Valley” of France, the Cirque de Gavarnie. The long hike into the falls reminded Frank and I of “two-a-days” in August in the Athens heat, but was well worth the hard work for the cooling mist at the bottom of the falls, which are hundreds of meters high.

Continuing on a westward track, we landed in Biarritz, Richard’s home, where we ate and drank like kings thanks to the warm generosity of the Tardits family. Having swum in the moonlight in the Mediterranean at Saint Feliu, Spain, late in June, the intrepid group then bobbed in the Atlantic early in July, under the warm French sun of the Bay Biscay.

Realizing that only one event could make this wonderful vacation complete, and with inspiration from Ernest Hemingway, we then headed south to Pamplona, Spain, for the festival of San Fermin. Enjoying the hospitality of Big Canoe accountant Steve Langway and his family (who have a summer home nearby), we took in a bull fi ght and the next morning joined the festival crowd by running with the bulls.

Richard proved to be the defensive signal caller for this football game, instructing the Bulldog runners to begin at the front of the pack, closest to the bulls, so as to be better able to get out of their way as they ran the half mile course to the bull ring. The pack of bulls charged by without any harm to us, but then one bull pulled a “trick play,” reversing his fi eld and running back through the crowd to the original line of scrimmage. This caused some scrambling by our team, including by audible of

dangling from a handrail only a few feet away from the bull’s horns, but the bull got turned around and headed back toward the bull ring, without any of us suffering any injuries.

Following the close scrape with the bulls, we rode back to Barcelona to drop off the motorcycles and fl y home. The crew rode several of the passes used by the Tour de France over the peaks of the Pyrenees, including Col d’ Aubisque (where we survived a hailstorm) and the Col d’ Tourmalet. On those long, steep climbs, we were happy we weren’t pedaling. Some of the most beautiful countryside was on the route from Ste-Engrace to Larrau, through St. Sauveur, and up to St-Jean-Pied-de-Port, along roads D113-D26-D19-F18, where lush green mountain peaks on one side, and raging trout streams on the other, framed the winding highway.

We all agreed that this was probably the best vacation ever without wives (Jan Ros, Joanna Tardits, Kathleen Lewis, and Gina Conlon, who eagerly stayed home), as every aspect of the trip exceeded our expectations; the camaraderie, the scenery, the friendliness of the locals, the weather, the food and wine, the performance of the motorcycles, and especially the running of the bulls. It was especially helpful that Frank (Catalonian, Spanish) and Richard (Basque, French, and Spanish) had all the languages covered. Thus, stopping and asking directions was never a problem. We are also thankful to Joe Tereshinski (1972-76, now the Bulldog conditioning boss), who took us on a springtime training ride, from Athens down to Madison and back, with his Harley Davidson.

Until our next adventure, we’ll sign off with “Au revoir, mes amis.”

ADDRESS?2011 Ole Faithful Dawg

Claude Williams

On September 17, 2011, the Georgia Football Lettermen’s Club was pleased to recognize Claude Williams as the 2011 Ole Faithful Dawg. The presentation took place at halftime of the UGA vs. Coastal Carolina football game. The Ole Faithful Dawg Award is given by the Georgia Football Lettermen’s Club to an individual who is not a football lettermen but who has been a loyal and dedicated supporter of the Bulldog football team throughout their time.

Claude Williams was born a Georgia Bulldog. He shared this story about his birth. “My father was a big Bulldog fan. We lived in Tifton, GA and my mother was expecting my birth on the day of the UGA vs. Auburn game in Columbus on Saturday, November 4, 1922. She told my father to go to the game. I was born on Sunday, November 5, 1922 at 2:00 AM following my father’s trip to the game.”

Claude Williams attended his fi rst UGA game in 1932 at the age of nine years old. From 1947 to the mid 2000’s, he attended most of the UGA games- home and away. Williams recently spoke of his favorite memories of Georgia Football. One of them was beating Tech 42-0 in 1942. He states, “After losing to Auburn the previous week, the win over Tech put UGA in the Rose Bowl on January 1, 1943.” UGA won over UCLA 9-0 as Frank Sinkwich and Charlie Trippi lead the way.

Claude Williams was the founder of Athens Newspapers Inc. which owned The Banner Herald and The Athens Daily News. Williams hired famed columnist Lewis Grizzard as a sports writer in the 1960’s which covered the early Dooley era. The newspaper also originated Harry Dog, the famed cartoon fi gure cheerleader. Williams was also a cofounder of Radio Station WRFC, the fl agship broadcaster of UGA football games, which has relayed the live broadcast to other radio stations since the 1940’s.

Over the years Williams has been closely involved with the Sanford Stadium Improvement Committee which steered the step-by-step growth of our iconic facility into what it is today. He was an advisor to Coach Bill Hartman and the Georgia Student Education Fund which placed a fi rm foundation under UGA Athletics over the years.

Claude Williams has been very generous with his abilities, time, and contributions over the years and received a unanimous decision to be chosen as the 2011 Ole Faithful Dawg.
