Dear reader, I would like to introduce you to the world of motorsport - with my personal view to the „human“ side. To show you how wonderful this community is, may not be new to you. But right now, in May 2020, as I miss the community of racing fans from all over the world very much, I would like to bring back the memories, how overwhelming it is to meet like-min-ded people at a racing event. Especi-ally in the time of forced contact-lessness, I would like to show the wonderful thing called ‚togetherness‘.

Michael Cassel, a good friend and great Cobra fan, took this photo in 2016 during the Le Mans Classic event from the American racing driver Jack Sears. Sears drove the breathtakingly beautiful and fast AC Cobra Coupé A98 at Le Mans in 1964. You could tell a thousand stories about his long life in racing. But when I look at this photo, I also see this bliss, which I would like to illustrate to you. Michael Cassel and Jack Sears are celebrating a wonderful moment at the moment of the photo shoot. His gaze into the camera says it all. I don‘t have to add anything to that. But I see even more in his portrait: namely, the „human side“ of our fathers, our mothers, our family members. Which for us went through many dangers, adventures and risky times. Listening to them, seeing them and absorbing their experiences and feelings is part of why I love working on my stand so much. This is this wonderful „hu-man factor“ that flows in myself in many ways. And the happiness that comes from listening to you, to race visitors, pilots and team members from all over the world. Because they are all united at this race-track, because they too find their „human happiness“ exactly there.

A day at one of my exhibiti-

ons is full of emotions. Here Gordon Murray visits me again at

Le Mans - and I can finally show him a watercolour art work of his car from

my hand. He designed the McLaren GTR, which won the Le Mans 24 Hours in 1995.

From his reaction, I could feel that he was really looking forward to taking the original with him to England - which he had been waiting for in secret for a long time. The

joy that his stroke of genius from 1995 will still be recognized and appre-

ciated in 2015 is easy to read too.

The French visitor told me his story during the 24 Hours of Le Mans 2007, about his very touching encounter with Co-lin Chapman. The photo shows him as a child, next to Colin Chapman, the de-signer and then also driver of the Lotus 11 with start number 32 at scrutineering at the Place des Jacobins before the big race in 1956. In the 1980s he was a track mars-hal at Le Mans. He told all of this with that glow in his eyes that we shared that day.

This watercolour bears it in the title: the unsung heroes of the racetracks are certainly the marshals. Their stories - and certainly those of the 1963 Le Mans 24 Hours - interest me very much. Marshals regularly visit me at Le Mans or Goodwood before the race and tell me their breathtaking stories of past and present. The fact that they do this voluntarily and unpaid shows their dedication to motor-sport.

LegendSometimes you feel the incomparable aura when you meet people. Mee-ting Stirling Moss at the Le Mans 24 Hours in 2009 was one of those magical moments. Early in the mor-ning, he was meeting me in the pad-dock of the classic Aston Martin racing cars for a signature campaign. Aston Martin celebrated his 50th Anniversary of the Le Mans victory 1959 with a car parade on Saturday at Le Mans - and I‘m still celebrating this unique experience with Stirling Moss today.

What would be this world

without supporters? Here is a pictu-re of a very hot Le Mans Classic Event 2010. Geoff Doughty, Daniel Acar and the reporter from Radio Le Mans show their most beautiful smile in the early hours of the morning - even befo-re the fierce midday heat. I owe a lot to all three of them. They have continuously made word-of-mouth propaganda and thus made many painting jobs and image purchases possible. Radio Le Mans reported live from our exhibition tent several times during the 24 hours. In alternation with John Hindhaugh in the studio, both reporters swarmed about my pictures - while many of the listeners in the car came to the racetrack. They made it clear that this was honest publicity with purchases of my pic-

tures. They‘re real supporters.

Ulrich Baretzky himself is a watercolor painter. However, he never had much time to do so. Because he is much better known for his engineering skills. He is the driving force in the engine construction of the Audi Sport de-partment. In 2017, the Automuseum Sinsheim in-vited him, his 14-times successful Le Mans-winning engines, all his employees, and of course an R18 to a Le Mans evening. I had the honour to conduct an interview with Ulrich Baretzky for almost two hours in front of about 300 guests. He described the spectacu-lar moments of the victories at Le Mans in the years 2000 to 2015 in his inimitable way. The evening was unforgettable due to the fascinating people in this environment. That evening it also became cle-ar to me that the mechanics and engineers present themselves are all artists in their very special field. And every race car

is (almost) unique.

Liz Halliday is a highly talented horse rider. But as if four

hooves and the challenge to ride them on international tournaments would not be enough already - she also rides races cars. I got to know her team manager and her at Le Mans - when she raced in LMP2. At Silverstone Classic 2009 - only a few weeks later - she drove one of the incredibly beautiful Alfa Romeo Gulietta Sprint Zagatos. All three challenges are immense: A horse with its own will and character, an LMP2 at night at Le Mans, a fragile and unbelievably expensive Zagato - and you have to car-ry all the responsibility for the animal, the owners of the race cars, other competitors - and very much for yourself too. And in the end: What would a race car be, without a person willing to show its talents. Without this human being risking his life to entertain hundreds, thousands or million

of spectators?

StarsIf, like Johnny O‘Connell, you‘re a star of the sports car scene in the US, but you‘re less well-known in Europe, then you‘ve got to get away with the 14 days at Le Mans somehow. In 2005, Johnny was one of the first pilots to discover my small sales stand. Over the years, he kept coming up from the pits and strolling past us. But if you think that he ordered a C5 pit stop scene for his house in the USA, then you are wrong. He ordered the Auto Union watercolor in the largest possible size on canvas for his living room overlooking a lake. This choice was like his visits: surprising.

HeroesThe definition

of a hero is certainly different for everyone. But I have one - that of my childhood. René Arnoux was my idol of Formu-la One. How to pick your idols when you‘re 14 ye-ars old. At that time, Formula 1 was quite suitable for heroes. And as a teenager of my stroke, I‘m sure you‘d want to be in the cockpit of a superior racing car. Now the Renault Turbo was also vulnerable - but if Arnoux led, it was my time to celebrate. But you don‘t become a hero just because of the mileage of leadership - I think. But by the heroic way, like Gilles Villeneuve in the Ferrari and René Arnoux in the Renault fought for the second posi-tion 1979 in Dijon for sure. Wheel to wheel, touches every-where, the final stage of the French Grand Prix was about the honour of the Grande Nation, as well as about that of the hot spur from Canada. Without throwing them-selves off the track - fair but tough - both became heroes. Not for nothing you can find this racing scene in youtube today immediately.

I f there‘s a photo that ref-

lects the “common joy of the moment“, it‘s this one. Jack Leconte, team manager of Larbre

Competition, has been visiting my exhibitions regularly since 2005. At the Retromobile in Paris, but of course especi-

ally in his „natural hunting ground“, the 24 Hours of Le Mans. He‘s one of the big bosses of a private team. Since the 1990s, he has been

regularly represented in the GT class with one or two vehicles, including Porsche or Aston Martin, Corvette, Saleen or a Viper. At its home race track in Val de Vienne, the hotel of the track awaits in each of the 24 rooms with a large print of my racing paintings. Many of my pictures adorn the rooms of his sponsors.

at workBeim 24 Stun-denrennen am Nür-burgring 2018 trennte mich nur eine Glasscheibe beim Malen von der Boxen-gasse, die ich gerade auf Papier brachte. Danke nochmals ganz herzlich an die Nürburgring GmbH, vor allem Manuela Mindermann, für die Ermöglichung einer Ausstellung und dem „live“-Auftritt während der 24 Stunden im VIP Lounge Bereich des Ring°Boulevards.

Das Resultat der drei Tage „Arbeit“ lässt sich auf der nächsten Seite be-trachten.

fans. Joe Flay is one of them. He runs an Automo-bilia website, is a passionate kart driver and multip-

le winner of the 24-hour karting race with his team. In 2007 he got to know my pictures and collected some of the

most sought after originals over the years.

His brother had the idea - whether you shouldn‘t paint a Le Mans car cemetery - which never existed, but which ever-yone would like to have. Said and done - and after the en-thusiastic handing over of the original, the left half of the painting was added the following year to collect even more

„scrap“ in watercolour. That‘s wonderful.

MechanicsI have always

been looking forward to the visits of my friends,

customers and guests. But when I see these pictures, I realize that I

miss those moments in particular. The engineers and mechanics from Multima-

tic, Ford, Toyota and many other teams did not only come once to our stand during the 5

days of our Le Mans exhibition - often several times. Sometimes they came as a concentra-ted team of „Car 66“ or „Alonsos TS 050“. With each of these men, it‘s an infinite pleasure to

talk about exactly what he‘s doing on the car, where they‘re coming from, exactly

how it all began in their career. This is all just magical, because on the big

races, you have the time.

T h e r e is hardly a more beautiful

feeling for me as an artist to decorate the stand when the tent is closed, and then on

the first day when visitors are allowed to open it. In all the years since 2005, I have certainly opened such a

stand or museum exhibition in the truest sense of the word with my wife and friends and colleagues almost a hundred times. The next time it happens, it will be something very special for me. It was special every time. And the joy was always great during the days of opening. But at the next exhibition, whet-her you‘re a spectator, marshal, pilot, team manager, engineer, sponsor, collector, friend, helper, idol, hero or legend, your vi-

sits will delight me even more than ever before. Thank you for your support in all these years - and especially in
