FOREWORD
Four years ago, high school students in Marion en-
tered a tremendous new school building. Among the
student body was a group of wary Freshmen. Now as
Seniors they will tell you about their school building, and
how they have broken it in for posterity, (since they are
the first class to complete four years of education in the
school).
During the past existence of the school, many an in-
quisitive animal has made his way into the halls and
classrooms for a closer look. We thought it would be a
kind gesture to give one of these animals, K-9 the Ex-
plorer, a guided tour of the building, introduce its occu-
pants, and present its activities. We hope that everyone
will catch a glimpse of the school's spirit and life as wepresent the 1959 Hylander.
2,
With deep appreciationfor her devoted service to the
students of Marion High School overa period of many years
for willingness to serve beyondthe call of duty. We have heard herlend encouragement to the players at
football, basketball, and baseballgames. We have seen her decoratingfor parties, preparing food or re-freshments when the occasion hasarisen, and cleaning up after the
parties are overfor her wise counsel and gui-
dance and for being our friend, we,the 1959 Hy lander staff, dedicatethis edition to Mrs. Flora Homewood.

AdministrationSuperintendent's Message
Every child in North Carolina is en-titled to a high school education.
Every child living within the confines of
the Marion City Administrative Unit is as-sured this birthright, provided he or she takesadvantage of the educational opportunitieswhich are available.
An education is a valuable asset to everyindividual. To the present generation, the
value will probably be greater than it hasbeen to any generation in any period fromtime immemorial to the present; therefore,
it should behoove every high school boy andgirl to firmly resolve that nothing will bepermitted to circumvent a high school diploma.
We believe that the facilities of MarionHigh School will compare favorably with anysimilar institution in the state. Your building
is modern and functional; your educationalmaterials and apparatus are of splendid caliber
and thoroughly adequate; your teachers are
well equipped, each holding either an "A" or
"G ' certificate; your extra-curricular acti-
vities are stimulating and should meet yourneeds; your entire surroundings are pleasant
and inviting- you should be able to "come of
age" with your full birthright, prepared to
meet any challenge you may be called upon to
face as the cloak of citizenship and its re-sponsibilities falls upon your shoulders.
May Godspeed be yours in all your en-deavors and undertakings.
Cordially,
School Board HuSh Beam
Seated: Mr. Eugene Cross, Mr. Joseph L. Noyes, Mrs. Walker Blanton, Mr. Robert Twitty.
Standing: Mr. R. L. James (who has resigned since picture was made) Mr. Hugh Beam, Mr. Earl God-frey. Inset: Mr. S. R. Perkins.
Mr. Hugh Beam, Superintendent of MarionCity Schools, and his s e c r e t a r y , MissHelen Smarr.
Mr. Charles C. Elledge is servinghis eleventh year as principal of MarionHigh School. In addition to being an ad-ministrator, he is a writer, having pub-lished some plays and poetry as well as
articles for professional journals. Hespends his summers in Boone where he
is associate director and actor in the
outdoor drama, "Horn in the West." Heis also in demand as a speaker when the
duties of his school position allow himany free time. Last year he appeared in
the motion picture, Thunder Road. He is
a state director for the Beta Club.
In almost a quarter of a century of
teaching and directing students, he musthave known over five thousand of them. His greatest joy is in helping youngpeople go on to get a higher education andbecome leaders in their communities.
Mrs. Eunice Py att , the veryefficient office secretary, is busywith one of the dozens of clerical
tasks with which she daily deals.
First let's introduce K-9 the Explorer to the
student body of Marion High School; the dignified
Seniors, haughty Juniors, wise Sophomores, andwary Freshmen.
While they are at their lockers is a good chanceto catch a glimpse of them. Here you will learn
how hard the test was, who got elected, and manyother things about school life. More importantthan all of this, though, is the building of friend-
ships and the increasing knowledge of the students
from year to year.

This is it. This is our annual, our last
months of preparing for jobs and colleges,
and our reminiscence of good times. Thisis our year. We came to our new building
four years ago, as Freshmen, frightened,
expectant, and willing. Since then we haveachieved many goals. We have been to NewYork, coming back the sleepiest Seniorsever but the happiest. Last year we workedhard on the Prom and this year we went to
our own Prom. We have successfully pro-
duced the Mouse Trap. In this book we canat least express our deep appreciation to
our teachers and principal, who throughpatience, understanding, and hard work, have prepared us for the future. When wegraduate we will leave many friends behind,
but we will also carry with us memorieswhich we will always cherish. As we leave
here, we can only hope that the following
classes enjoy the same fulfilment of four
wonderful years of dreams come true.

Here we are, the Juniors. It is hardfor us to believe that finally we are a part
of some of the biggest festivities of MarionHigh School. The Junior Senior Prom
—
this year it has been our privilege to pre-sent the Seniors with that divine gift. TheNational Honor Society --now being eligible
for this honor club, we all sat aroundwith crossed fingers waiting for that red-letter day when some of us were inducted;
others are still waiting.
Another privilege enjoyed by us
Juniors is the new responsibility which the
teachers seem suddenly to place on us.
We are older and more interested in learn-
ing. We hope we have proved ourselves
worthy of our teachers' confidence in the
classroom, in the Junior play, in all our
other activities of the school.

Having made it through our Freshmanyear, we look back with a feeling of ac-complishment and see all that we learned.
It took us a while to learn the tricks of
the trade such as: how to run to lunchwithout a student council member seeingus, how to always bow and scrape to a
dignified Senior, how to bribe anotherstudent for his place in lunch line, how to
slug the coke machine, and how to get
somebody to answer homeroom call for usso that we can have five extra minutes. We think we're pretty sharp on suchmatters now and could probably teach afew upper -classman our tricks.
We know that a lot lies ahead of us in
our Junior and Senior years of high school.
We are looking forward to the banquetsand plays we will work on with eagerness, and all that the next two years will bring.

While we Freshmen have not had timeto make much history as yet, we havemanaged to make enough noise to make our
presence known. We have found it possible
to survive without certain things whichwe were led to believe were necessaryparts of a freshman's equipment. We'vehad to do without what some of the digni-

:
locker stretchers, and study hall sheets.
But equipped or not, we are here to stay
(for not more than four years we hope).
It is our sincere desire to uphold the

For the benefit of K-9 we will now intro-
duce the teachers and their classes.
Once they have passed through this doorand it is closed behind them, the students aresubject to fifty minutes of instruction in one
of the many courses in school. In math,English, science, or history, the interested
students will find that preparation now will
open many opportunities for them in the
future.

Surrounded by brilliant autumn leaves, members of Mrs. Laughridge 's English class are easily
transported to lands of imagery by poet or writer of prose. "The Ancient Mariner" again finds anattentive ear to listen to his tale of woe.
Snglisd And Speech
Mr. E. L. Carter, English IV; Mrs. Mary FrancesBrown, English II; Mrs. Eleanor Laughridge, English
l;Mrs. Grace Elledge, English III; and Mrs. KatherineLightfoot, English II, hold the reins in the Englishdepartment.
46
Ronald Owenby is acting as moderator for a panel
composed of Carolyn Searcy, Dean Wall, BrendaMiller, and John Street man . The subject for
discussion is "Teen-Age Problems." The Speech
Class also does choral reading, debates, radio
programs, and chapel programs, in addition to
routine class work.
Biology students watch as Mrs. Finley uses adiagramto illustrate a point.
Mrs. Patty Finley seems to have made some startling
discovery while looking into that microscope. PerhapsMr. Bill Blackburn and Mr. Howard Wilson can find
the interpretation of her findings in those two bookswhich they are fingering. These three teachers give
instruction in physics, chemistry, biology, and generalscience. The gift from the Key Club last spring hasbeen put to good use in buying equipment for the
laboratories.
^ JmDistillation seems to be the subject of this experiment performed by a group in chemistry class, under the
supervision of Mr. Blackburn. Graham Clontz, Donald Holland, Wayne Westall, and Bobby Morris see in
it the possibility of breath-taking results; while Clinton Lytle seems to say, "Boy, oh boy! It's going to
explode!
"
M&th empties
Future math majors and en gine e r s get their
basic facts in classes like this one taught by Mrs.Davis. Who said cartoons should be relegatedto the comic books?
The mathematical wizards of the school keeptheir tricks of the trade with them. Mrs. Edith
Davis, Miss Catherine Alley, and Mrs. KateLindsay teach everything from two from ten leaves
eight to advanced trigonometry and pre -college
algebra.
Everybody looks very pleased about that stick you are holding, Mrs. Lindsay. Surely this isn't
"Arithmetic taught to the tune of a hickory stick." Steve, Sue, Doug, and Carolyn know the stick is a
geometric tool, but Janet isn't too sure.
Mrs. Morris and Mrs. Freeman offer help to
those who learn commercial courses. Here "Nowis the time for all good men to come to the aid of
their country" becomes a stepping stone to typing
business letters, documents, and maybe even an
occasional love note slipped in when no one is
looking. Courses in general business, bookkeeping,
and shorthand are also given in this department.
Many graduates from this department are now hold-
ing good positions in the business world.
Commercial And Social Studies
"This fine old world of ours is
but a child yet in the go-cart.
Patience! Give it time to learn its
limbs." Mrs. Lightfoot gives mem-bers of her social ec. class a little
lesson from the globe.
Seated: Mrs. Betty Freeman, commercial; Mrs.Emily Morris, commercial; Mrs. Mary Laughridge, civics and world history; Mrs. Katherine Lightfoot,
sociology and economics.Standing: Mr. Ted Freeman, U. S. history; Mr.Bucky Reep, U. S. history; Mr. E. L. Carter, geog-raphy; and Mr. Howard Wilson, civics.
Miss Mildred Glenn, librarian, can tell you the name of every book in the library and where to find it.
Here she stamps a card for Bobby Hunter while Nelda Welborn fills out a requisition blank.

"Of classic legends rare and old,
Wherein the scenes of Greece and RomeHad all the commonplace of home,
And little seemed at best the odds
'Twixt Yankee peddlers and old gods."
Miss Catherine Alley and Mrs. Marguerite Gilkey
bring the cultures of Rome and France into the
classrooms in the foreign language department.
Driver Education classes offer instruction to students
sixteen years old or who will be sixteen during the
school year and are interested in learning to drive.
Students receive instruction from Mr. Freeman on the
mechanism of a car as well as instruction on how to
drive it. With the help of a dr i v e r training car,
furnished by Ballew Motor Co., the community is
benefiting from this very practical course.
Physical Sducation
Driver Sduc2ition
Instructors in Physical Education: Mr. Jim Mc-Fadden, Mrs. Mary Laughridge, Mr. BuckyReep,Mr. Howard Wilson, Driver Education instructor:Mr. Ted Freeman.
Physical Education is one class all students in
Marion High School enjoy at some time or another.
Although "phys ed" has its share of drudgery in
exercise, it certainly has its rewards. Girls andboys alike take pride in possessing strong bodiesand good health. What better way is there to gain
these than in a good game of soccer, softball,
volleyball, or baseball? In calisthenics the 1,2,3,
4's are translated into different movements of the
body.
51
Mrs. Flora Ho me wood, home economist,
spends ten months a year instructing girls in
homemaking. She is showing Mildred Hollifield,
Carolyn Church, and Frankie Crisp how to concoct
some exotic egg dish.
"A little more salt, please," says Jeanie to
Donna. The beautifully etched tray in the fore-
ground was made in the home ec. class. Cookingis the order of the day in this room; sewing is
going on in the room next door. Patricia seemsto be the only one who has to wash dishes.
Manual Arts And Home Sconomics
Saws, vices, machines, tools, these things
are typical of the manual arts class, whichwe call
simply Shop. The boys who take this course have
made some beautiful pieces of furniture, every-thing from bookends to cedar chests and walnut
cabinets.

We do not want the above scene to give K-9 the
wrong impression about our activities. While the
activities of our year are high -lighted by the Junior
-
Senior Prom, and other class parties, our service,
honor, and training clubs play an important part in
school life. Each club helps prepare the students in
some way to get along with and help other people.
It's hard to tell which team just made a touchdown—Marion or Rutherfordton. Ask PatsyRector, or some of the other apparently happy people; they might be able to tell you.
The Homecoming queen and her court are presented in a coronation ceremony prior to
the football game which the Rippers won 28-7.

The Marion High School Band is under the
direction of Mr. Claude Jarrett this year.
The first part of the school year the band's
work was centered around performing at
pep meetings and football games . OnThanksgiving day the band represented our
school at the Lions Bowl football game.During the month of December the band
gave its Christmas concert. The remain-ing part of the year is being devoted to
other concerts and preparations for the
district and state contests.

things. Maybe he realizes that everyone at
least takes an interest in the athletics of his
school. To help arouse spirit we have our
cheerleaders Judy Lawing, chief; MarthaNesbitt, Sally Hitchcock, Bette Garratt, JaneHollis, and Martha Pyatt. If K-9 could only
feel the excitement we do in the closing
minutes of an exciting ball game, the victory
that means so much to the players, coaches, and school, or the loss when we know youhave done your best!

Now is the time for our Hylander Staff and the
students of Marion Senior High School to expresstheir appreciation to what they think is one of the
finest coaching staffs in the state.
Everybody needs a leader. A boy has far
more idealism than some people suspect. He will
work. He will take rules and follow them, and evenkeep in strict training. He will struggle to qualify
at great personal sacrifice. If he is confident there
is a job to be done and fine coaches to believe in,
he will give. And we certainly have four of the
finest coaches to believe in and be proud of.

Everyone agrees that our head coach, JimMcFadden, is the greatest. We appreciate the timehe has spent with each and every boy. The love,
patience, and understanding he has given them in the
past two years will not be forgotten. In the past
two seasons he and his team have racked up animpressive 16 wins, 4 losses, and 1 tie.
Our assistant coach, Ted Freeman, being our
head line coach, has done a tremendous job. Lastyear he had the best line in the state. This season,
starting with six new linemen, the team ended upwith winning four out of the last five games. CoachFreeman deserves much credit for the success of
the line, and you will find every boy on the teamspeaking of him with respect and loyalty.
Coach Howard Wilson, our J. V. coach, and ourfine assistant backfield coach, Bucky Reep, haveboth done outstanding jobs. The success of ourteam this year depended mainly upon the fine scout-ing reports brought back each week to our Athletic
Department. We the students of Marion High salute you and
your winning teams for your good sportsmanshipand teamwork.
