Tis the season to be jolly, and with those thoughts, I would like to thank everyone who attended our Christmas Party at the Round Hill Country Club, especially Stacey Hawley and Carol Cooper for making it a truly exceptional event. Also, I would like to express my gratitude to both last year’s and this year’s officers, committee chairs, and everyone else who has dedicated their time and efforts to making the NCIFT such a strong and viable organization.

I am sure that 2011 will be another challenging year for all of us, but I also feel that working together, we can expect our industry to gain in strength and help fuel an economic growth, both for ourselves and our country. Contrary to a recent cover story in Newsweek, I believe we are a group of creative individuals in the food

industry who can and will bring new and exciting ideas to the tables of America.

There are more exciting events coming in the New Year — the CLFP Luncheon on Feb 1, NCIFT Golf outing on May 2, and the Suppliers’ Expo on May 3. Make plans to attend and encourage your colleagues to join you at one of these events and consider becoming NCIFT members. As you know, the fees are very reasonable, and the benefits from membership are many, as are those offered by IFT membership.

Last but not least, I would like to wish each of you the very best in the New Year. I look forward to seeing you at an NCIFT event, soon.

Entering the company’s headquarters on Thursday, September 16, we were greeted by our host for the event, Chef Michael Garza, Tulocay’s Director of Research and Development. The tasting room and retail store, showcasing all of their gourmet specialty products, provided a truly impressive sight as we sampled the delicious appetizers, snacks and desserts prepared by the chef and his staff from products made in the adjoining 50,000 square foot facility housing the test kitchen, processing plant, administrative offices, demonstration kitchen, and café.

Everyone received a goodie bag that included their new Premium Granola, multi-use cloth for picnics, and several sauces and rubs. You should have been there!Reported by Darby Quan, Elizabeth Cuff and Susan Howe

Science Fair Judges Needed The end of winter means the beginning of science fairs in

California, and NCIFT participation in these will continue. NCIFT members will judge at six different science fairs in California. Judging science fair projects is a major emphasis of the NCIFT career guidance program aimed at recruiting young people to consider careers in the food industry. Only projects related to food are evaluated by the NCIFT judging teams giving them an opportunity to talk to students about their projects and the opportunities in the food industry.

Judging is on the first day of each fair, and takes only a few hours unless there are a very large number of food- related projects. The judges decide winners and make the awards at each fair. NCIFT has allocated $200 for each of these six fairs in 2011. Tentative dates for the six science fairs in 2011 and their locations are 1. San Francisco, March 30 (E. Jerry Oliveras)2. From Scott Nichols, SJIFT Golf Chair

The 12th Annual SJIFT Golf Tournament was held on October 14th, 2010 at a new venue this year, the Riverbend Golf Club, located along the beautiful San Joaquin River in Madera, CA. It was a very hot day, (blame it on global warming!) with a temperature of 97°F at tee-off. However, at the end of the event, our player survey showed that folks had a great time and wanted to return to this venue. We had our largest turnout ever, with 147 players teeing off on the 6,311 yard course. This year, we had 3 Gold Sponsors, 11 Tournament Sponsors, 21 Tee Sponsors and 11 Food & Beverage Sponsors. Ruiz Foods again sponsored our “No Whining Hole,” where the person with the worst shot off the tee got a nice bottle of Fresno State wine. The SJIFT sponsored a $10,000 cash prize hole-in-one on one of the three-pars. Special thanks go to dave Plowman of Basic Chemical Solutions and Michele Tomas of Nationwide Boiler who entered 12 players each along with a Tournament and Tee Sponsorship, respectively.

The Tournament raised $9,768 in Scholarship funds for CSUF Food Science Students! Since the inception of the tournament, we have raised over $64,000. The success of this tournament is due to the overwhelming support we receive from our sponsors. This year, we added a third level of sponsorship, the Gold Level at $1,000 each. We want to thank Susan Manuel of Ruiz Foods who paid for two Gold Sponsorships along with Scott Nichols of the E.T. Horn Company who contributed a Gold Sponsorship. Tournament Sponsors each gave $300 and Tee Sponsors each gave $150. Food and Beverage Sponsors filled up the goodie bags and provided beverages to help keep our costs down.
