2 Main Past Tenses in Spanish

In Spanish, there are 2 main tenses used to talk in the past:

1. El Pretérito2. El Imperfecto

El Pretérito

Specific actions in the past (you can prove it).

I arrived at 3:00 yesterday. (It happened and I can prove it. check the

flight records at 3:00 yesterday!)llegué a las tres ayer.

Lisa studied from 2:00-5:00 yesterday.Lisa estudió de las dos hasta las cinco

ayer.

El Imperfecto

Imperfect is more general NOT specific:I used to dance. (No real proof that I actually danced)Bailaba

El Imperfecto As a child, I used to always play

soccer.

My family and I used to vacation in Hawaii every Summer.

I was very shy as a kid.

Conjugation: Endings

Drop the Ending (AR, ER, IR) Add:

For AR Verbs: abaabasabaábamos (*Note the accent mark*)

Conjugation: Endings

For ER and IR Verbs:

íaíasíaíamosían

*NOTE = All of the endings have an accent on the “i”

Irregular Verbs:

There are only 3 irregular verbs!!!

Preterit Irregulars

1. “yo” form only!!! 2. Remove the “car”, “gar”, “zar” Add:car – quégar – guézar – cé

Preterit Irregulars

 Both “dar” and “ver” conjugate the same.   dar = to give

Both use “er/ir” endings with NO accents.

diste (you gave)  dio (he/she gave) You (formal) gave

dieron (they gave) (you guys gave)

 vi (I saw) vimos (we saw)

viste (you saw)  vio (he/she saw) You (formal) saw

vieron (they saw) (you guys saw)

Use the Impefect:

to refer to actions in the past that occurred repeatedly.I used to walk every day.Yo caminaba cada día.I studied at 3:00 every day.Estudiaba a las tres cada día.

We would eat watermelon every summer.

Comíamos sandía todos los veranos.

Imperfect Tense

Preterit Tense

Even actions that occurred 5 times, if they all finished it is preterit tense:

I ate five times yesterday.Comí cinco veces ayer.
