the industry aims to install biogas facilities at
TRANSCRIPT
• The industry aims to install biogas facilities at
all 500 palm oil mills by 2020. At present,
only 65 are operating with these facilities,
making it a sizable potential market.
• A newly imposed mandate requires all palm
oil mills to install biogas trapping or methane
avoidance facilities by 2018. This will trigger
the need for technologies and services.
• Government incentives are being offered for
both international and national companies in
the biogas sector.

• Malaysia is the second largest palm oil producer in the world, and the industry is one
of the key contributors to the Malaysian economy. It accounts for more than 5% of
the country’s annual export and is highlighted in the government’s growth initiative,
The National Key Economic Areas where development of biogas facilities at palm oil
mills is one of the major focus areas.
• The industry has been accused of being disruptive to the environment with its release
of methane gas into the atmosphere. In response to this criticism and to push for the
development of biogas plants, a mandate was announced for palm oil mills to install
methane avoidance facilities before 2018 for purpose of reducing green house gas
emission.
• In the research and discussion with the Malaysian stakeholders, the Embassy
believes that there are opportunities for Danish companies to offer products and
services within this sector, for example construction and operation of biogas plants
and flaring facilities, boilers, filters, gas burners, chemicals, enzymes etc.
