Biology, is the study of living things and is part of one of the most important assignments in school: science. A group of cells form a tissue, a group of tissues form an organ and a group of organs form an organ system. This bimester on biology the students from 9th grade studied the respiratory system and in order to do it they opened a lung of a terrestrial animal, also they saw the trachea and bronchi.

First they opened the lungs to see the bronchioles inside the lung and they saw how it worked. Then a short explication of the teacher was enough for them to understand how the air pass through the larynx and pharynx and how important is the epiglottis in the human body.

After they saw how the

respiratory system worked the students had to build a model of it but with only one condition: they had to replace the parts of

the respiratory system with materials that could replace them.

It was difficult to find a material that could replace the veins and arteries on the lungs because it had to be a material that could carry a liquid such as blood but thin so oxygen and carbon dioxide could diffuse through it. Finally they had to present it to the class and explain why they choose what they choose.

MAURICIO BUSTAMANTE’S AUTOBIOGRAPHY

Andrés Mauricio Bustamante was born on Bogota-Colombia in the “Fundación Santa Fe” clinic on March 26, 1996. His parents are Jose Fernando Bustamante and Diana Maria Escobar, he has a sister called Juanita Bustamante. As a baby Mauricio was very curious and had a lot of energy, he used to move a lot and play all day. In the garden he missed many classes cause he liked to play so he stood on the playground while others where on class.

When he entered to school he had to change his behave because school was a place where responsibility is a key to success. Mauricio entered to the Rochester school where choice theory is part of the code of ethics and where the golden rule: “treat others as you want to be treated” was the phrase that changed his behaving.

On the Rochester School the classes that called his attention and that he liked were Math Science and physical education and the assignments where he had problems were Spanish and Colombia.

Right now Mauricio is planning to study Biomedical engineering in “Los Andes” and also he wants to marry and have kids at a short age.

THE “REVIEW” OF HAPPINESS

The pursuit of happiness is a very good movie that shows perseverance as a quality that humans got to have to achieve success also shows how perseverance is the determinant factor in a goal or dream.

In “the real meaning of perseverance” the author describes the exact events that took Chris Gardner to get his happiness. The events that the author describes are very punctual and important he does not mention only positive things that happened to him also a few negative things that became positive in a point.

An example of a negative event that became positive is

when he lost a scanner, he lost that scanner and he was angry and sad because of that but after a while he realize that loosing that scanner was not so bad because when he recovered it he repair it and sell it, he sell it when he had no money so thanks to that he could obtain money for him and his son.

After reading and thinking about this essay people could realize that with a few perseverance they could make many different things also this story can inspire them to be a better person.

FUN CHEMISTRY

After learning about atoms and their electrons, neutrons and protons, in chemistry, we made a lab experiment that was about burning some element compounds and then watch and observe what color and how was the flame.

Some chlorines that we burn were potassium chlorine, sodium chlorine and lithium potassium, The flames that were produced by this chlorines were very different, the lithium chlorine burned a kind of blue mixed with green but the potassium chlorine burned color white with a little of purple.

We learned that the flames were different because of the electrons when burns release a different amount of energy that way the colors change.

In this experiment I felt good because I like doing experiments that involve fire and also i feel that experiments can develop an autonomy in the students because it make him think why does that thing that just happened occur like that, why does the flame burns with different colors?

In the photo below we can observe a bit of potassium chlorine, it was taken from: http://www.elperiodicoderincon.com.ar/ver_noticia.php?id=20080318194401, “ El periodico de Rincon “Diary.”

THE CAR, A 20TH CEN-TURY INVENTION

20th Century car. Photo taken from: http://www.portalplanetasedna.com.ar/henry_ford.htm

Henry Ford

Henry ford was an industrialist, and the founder of the Ford Motor Company. He was born on July 30, 1863 and died on April 7, 1947. He founded The Ford motor Company on June 16, 1903.

Ford was one of the first companies who distribute cars in a huge and international way on the 20 century, and the 20 century was a project on history this bimester where my group and I found a calendar of the century where the most important events of the car invention where named:

1901

The Benz Company puts the engine in the front part of a truck. This idea was a principle and was incorporated in most of the cars in the next years.

!902

The Dürkopp Company builds the first 6-cylinder engine, designed for tourism.

1924

The first automobile with the name CHRYSLER was built on January 5th. Walter P. Chrysler launches a car with his name that includes hydraulic brakes and high compression engine.

1927

The Volvo Brand produces its first car, Model P4

1932

FORD presents the V8 mono-bloc engine for the low prices segment.

1946

A button replaces the pedal that started the engine.

During this bimester while

learning about the 20th century we created a little magazine where we named this events and also others inventions on the 20th century like the radio, airplane, television and others. This project was one of the most interesting ones because we had to research and we learned many interesting things.

HEALTH CARE WITH UNIQUE INSTRUMENTS

Physical education is a class where the students play sports and also they learn to take care of themselves, they learn how exercise and a good diet help them to stay healthy, and a project that we had this bimester was measuring our dimensions of our body with very different instruments.

The first was an instrument called adipometer which helped us to measure the cutaneous fat of our body. This instrument is a type of cluster that measure the folds of the body fat and gave the measure in millimeters. We were divided in groups adn in those groups we measured our body fat in different parts like in the abdominal zone or the triceps.

The other element was called caliper and it measured the width of some bones like the wrist, elbow and the knee. This instrument is very light and it measures in centimeters.

The last instrument is a common one that is the meter. We used it to measure the muscles of our bodies. In our upper body we measured the pectoral zone the biceps (relaxed and contracted), in the middle section we measured the abdomen and in the lower part we measured the thighs and the cufflinks.

Newton is getting essayed

In a physics and Spanish class the teachers asked the students to do an essay about the contribution of Newton in modern physics and how things like seat belts were made and improved thanks to him. Here we have got a review about that essay and our opinions. Pg 20

“AeroColombia” is the new Airline that has as an objective to introduce Colombia to the rest of the World. The founders of this Airline are Daniel Felipe Delgado and Mauricio Bustamante. This Airline started as a geography project but has become a bigger industry. Through all of this process of creating this business “AeroColombia” started being a simple store that sold things 100% Colombian it did not had a name but the founders thought a store was too simple so they thought of a plane with an inside store that sells Colombian things and that’s how this started. First it was going to be called “Colombia Vuela” and was only a project of building stores in planes that come to Colombia, then they thought that it was better to make an Airline dedicated and specialized in travels to Colombia.

“Colombia Vuela” was created the Airline started being planned and it was going very good its process and development but with some surveys they realized that

the name “Colombia Vuela” was not being well accepted by people so they had to think of an original and catchy name. While they think of a name for it they were also planning the routes on which they will operate, they thought that it was a good idea that their flights were with Bogota destiny so they chose the most important capitals of the world and started choosing the routes. Their idea was very big and they wanted that their flights were going all the way to the oriental part of the world so they made an alliance with “The Star Alliance” which has many of the most important and big Airlines in the world. One day on geography class Daniel Delgado told Me (Mauricio Bustamante) that he had the name of the company: “AeroColombia”. At the beginning I don’t like it but after some surveys and some very special opinions I loved it. First thing to do was changing the name from all the products and everywhere we had the name on. This project was very useful to me because I learned very much about the sectors of economy and I classify my company into these sectors. Also I learned about corporate social responsibility and also I apply it on my company. I felt good because the group work was excellent and we made a very good company that has a very bright future.

The Electric Car, a Hope For The Environment. The carbon dioxide is one of the most emitted wastes in the entire world and it is dangerously threatening it. Carbon dioxide is a waste product from factories, burning fossil fuels, oil, and gas and mostly by cars. More than 56,000,000 cars have been produce this year and most of them use gasoline as their fuel which produces a lot of carbon dioxide in a single day. Nowadays people use their car for every-thing even to go to the corner and back and more and more people are buying cars, and that is producing more wastes each years. But now many car industries think they have the solution, a wastes-free car, an environmental-friendly car they have come up with the idea of an electric car. Although the energy that they use is pro-duce mostly in centrals where carbon di-oxide is emitted, the electric cars will re-duce the wastes produce each day. Elec-tric cars are not a new thing, this type of cars were thought on the 70’s and even one of the went faster than 100 km/h but finishing the XIX century cars propelled by gasoline became popular and left this cars in prototypes and empty ideas. These cars are getting a lot of attention recently because of the consciousness people are getting about the environment and more car industries are launching a electric model. There is only one major issue when talking of electric cars and that is the speed. Their speed is slightly less than a car that uses gasoline, the average speed of this type of cars is between 110 km/h and 120 km/h and prototypes have reached incredible speeds, today the re-cord is 281 km/h. But if the pros and cons are compared the pros will win because nowadays the environment is very impor-tant and everybody is being a part of this incredible change.

Important companies as BMW, Volvo and Chevrolet are preparing or already have a electric car for sale which is very signifi-cant that companies such as these want to help the environment. Also new com-panies specialized in electric cars are ready to take over the world. This new companies have revolutionary designs which intrigues many people and fasci-nates other. Velozzi, Fisker Automotive and Zenn Motors are some of the electric car companies that claim to change the world. Velozzi says that their cars will be fast they even claim that one of their cars will go from 0-60 km/h in just 3 seconds and we know that is very impressing for an electric car.

A Project Made With All “My” Heart

In past editions we talk about the ninth graders learning about the systems in human beings, well this bimester they learn about the circulatory system and because of that they open a mammals heart in class. First the kids got to know things about the heart, like what is made of, why it pumps and how it works, so they had a complete class about the heart where they learned all this things and more. After this class they were give as an instruction to bring a mammals heart and the same other in-struments they brought last time. They did. In the class on which they were going to open the heart the teacher gave them more instructions before they start cutting the heart and opening it. Then he told the students that they had to cut underneath an important vein they did and that’s how the saw the first two chambers of a mam-mal’s heart.

Then the students realized that the cham-bers were full of some white strings and they do not know what were they so they ask their teacher about it. The teacher told them that “strings” were valves that do not allow the blood to pump backwards. Thanks that the students brought not only

mammal’s hearts but also big mammals hearts like cows, they were able to see everything they need to accomplish this assignment.

This project was one of the most useful one’s because it help us understand the structure of a mammal’s heart and how it works. Also it helps us in teamwork be-cause all my team was cooperating some were cutting others taking pictures and others taking notes about it. So in conclu-sion this was one of my favorites projects of them all in the bimester.

Cows heart, cut right above and beneath an important vein.

These are the valves that the students saw and ask the teacher about.

The Five Needs That “Drive Your Car”

The choice theory is a theory developed by William Glasser that says that the only person whose behavior we can control is our, also he says that our total behavior is made up four factors: acting, thinking, feelings and physiology. Two of these fac-tors are manageable by us that are the thinking and acting and the other two that we can control. The choice theory de-scribes a cycle, which is always working that describes how we react in a situation. First, the real world is everything we can perceive with our 5 senses those things we perceive in a situation enters to a kind of filtration process, which allows some things to go into our quality world, and others things don’t. Our quality world is a space in our minds where we keep every-thing that we like or enjoy. For example if you like to drive, driving is going to be in your quality world. The quality world has every kind of stuff, flavors, sounds, activi-ties, people, places and even words. The things that enter to our quality world can also go out. When we perceive things that are in our quality world our mind is in a state of equilibrium, generally our mind is in this state when we satisfy five basic needs. The five basic needs named by Glasser are: survival, love and belonging, power and significance, freedom and fun. All this needs, for the exception of sur-vival, are psychological and are satisfy in different kind of forms, but survival for most of the people is satisfy with clothes, food, shelter, personal safety and others. When the mind perceives situations that satisfy this needs they enter to the quality world and maintain the mind in balance. But when something that is not part of the quality world is perceived many things could happen. First if it helps satisfy one basic need it enters to the quality world, if it does not affect in any way this needs the mind will stay the same but if it affects

in a bad way a need the imaginary bal-ance will not be in equilibrium, so its time to manage the situation which lead us to the car. This car has four tires, which rep-resent the four factor of the total behavior and this car will only have one driver which is you. The back tires that you cant control are the two factors you cant con-trol which are the feelings and your physi-ology while the front tires that are the ones which turn the car and you can con-trol are the two factors you can control your thinking and acting. When a bad situation is perceived the situation will be examined in order from back to front. First your feelings and physiology, you can feel fear or sadness and you can start sweat-ing or shaking and that are things you cant control but when it comes to your thinking and acting it is a complete differ-ent situation. You can think anything of the situation but is your choice to think of a good thing to do to better the situation and that’s choice theory, also your acting is the ending factor but it is very important because you can think about a good thing for solving the situation but if you do not do it you are not turning your car to the correct side and finally those actions come out to the real world again. This cycle describes our behavior in any situation that we get into and teach people that the only ones that can solve a prob-lem are themselves.

This is the cycle described by Glasser. Taken from: http://www.coachingforexcellence.biz/ChoiceTheory.shtml

Not a “Cheesy” Situation Cheese, a nutritive food that comes from the milk. There are many types of cheese but what is also cheese? Is the second bimester project fro chemistry and other sub-jects. At the beginning of this scholar year the co-ordinators of each group asked us about an inte-grate project, we could choose between studying a certain wetland, the Bogota river or making cheese. Personally I chose the wetlands but many other people chose the cheese project. I did not want to do it, I really did not like it but I had to do it. Few days ago we heard the cheese project again and I got over it, now I really do not care what we were going to do I was going to do it with all my energy. The coor-dinators told us to bring masks, overalls, hair net and a guide they send us. We did and on the day of the experiment, every-body was excited but they really don’t know about what. We had a meeting with a food engineer, which explained us many things that we need to know like the different types of contamination in food, the health instruc-tions when making food, also he talk about cheese. He talk about how cheese is made, some kinds of cheese

and what we where going to do that day. He ex-plained the process that we were going to follow in order to make cheese. First the curdling process, which consisted on heat-ing the milk to 60º C dur-ing half an hour, that way the solid curd separates from the liquid whey. Then the second step is the curd processing, the curd must be cooled to 30º C and the salt is added also the calcium chlorine is added, The salt will first give flavor to the cheese and it will ab-sorb all the water on it and preserve it. The cal-cium chlorine will give the cheese more consistency and it will make it don’t fell apart when cutting it. The last step is called ripening, on our cheese we where not going to use this step because our cheese is a fresh one but he explained that for some cheeses the ripen-ing gave them the strong flavor in them and that this step could take a lot of time. The schedule determined that the first grade that was going to be making the cheese was mine, 9B, then 9A and finally 9C. We thought that we were going to do everything because the first two steps were too short, but we were wrong. We did not take into ac-count that we were part f

the cleaning and disinfec-tion process that consist of washing all the tables and disinfect them. This process took about 30 minutes of our total time. Then we heat the milk to 60ºC and took some samples to complete the guide. In the guide they asked us to state the proc-ess of cheese making, de-termine the density of the milk and more other things. I was hoping it was longer but our time was over, but in the last class of the day the physics teacher asked some students from other grades to participate on the curd cutting process, one of those students was me. The curd had to be cut in squares with one-centimeter length and one-centimeter of width I did it and saw how the whey came out when I cut it. I liked this project but I expected more of it, I had would like that the school organized a trip to Alpina’s factory and see how the cheese is made there. Be-sides all, this project was very interesting and now I am waiting to taste the cheese we made.

A Big Contribution

In La fisica de la seguridad, “The security physics” the author analyzes how the con-tribution of Sir Isaac Newton made a great change in different areas like security. First he mention the contribution of New-ton by stating the Newton’s laws, which are the inertia law, the force law and the action-reaction law, then he enters to a way different subject that is the seat belts. He talks about the history of seat belts, the types of seatbelts and the improve-ments to seatbelts and that’s were New-ton enters again. Newton made a change in this area because thanks to him the inertial reel is invented. The inertial reel is a mechanism which when a weak and slow force is applied to it, it allows to un-roll the seatbelt but when a violent and strong force is applied it blocks the seat-belt and do not allow to unroll it, this mechanism is very helpful in a crash be-cause it maintains the passenger, or the person that is using it, in their place. He also talks about the issues that are around the seatbelts, issues like injuries and laws that need to be applied to the constitution. The injuries that he talks about are usually related to the two points seatbelt, a seatbelt that goes around the waist and only has two points of assur-ance, that are very dangerous because in case of a crash the seatbelt will only stop the middle section of the body in a violent way allowing the upper part of the body to move in a nasty way and making it hit parts of the car like the accelerometer board. This situation has caused may dif-ferent and dangerous injuries such as lumbar spine fracture, this injury can lead to paralysis and even death, is a the top of a long list of wounds and injuries that this type of seatbelt can cause. He also talks about how thanks to this the general part of cars are made with three point seat-belts, which have an extra point right over

the shoulder making it to be safer. Also he gives his personal opinion about the seat-belts and says that there must be a law that bans the use of two point seatbelts on a car, using as argument the danger that the people are exposed to. Besides all this interesting facts and opin-ions that the author is giving he also men-tions how this Newton’s laws and the seatbelts influence in society in many ways like politically, culturally and ethi-cally. He says that it has influence politi-cally because thanks to seatbelts there are already some standards that force anybody that drives a car or is in the car to use the seatbelts or they have to pay a fine. Culturally, because now anybody who enters a car is going to look for the seatbelt because our culture has now adopted the seatbelts as part of the secu-rity in cars. Ethically, he says, because people consider unethical to be in a car with no protection at all, they now con-sider ethical to use seatbelts and all thanks to Newton’s contribution. While writing this essay I felt very intellec-tual because I had to use very different terms that are not part of our normal vo-cabulary. Also I felt intellectual because while I was writing I knew what I was writ-ing about and no writing because.

The Informant “Informing the ultimate school experience”

A Very Complete Evidence!

In the school year we make many projects and we make the best effort we can but when we try to evidence it, it becomes really difficult to resume the entire project in only one evidence. But in English class we are making a project every bimester in which we have to resume in articles some projects in the year and it is the Magazine. In this magazine we have to evidence four projects that we had in the bimester and we have to make an article about them with pictures, taken by us, different refer-ences and our personal opinion. This magazine has to be updated every bimester including its table of contents and also, we have to do publicity. Besides all this articles and publicity we have to make, we have to make other ar-ticles about different topics. One article has to be an environmental topic; the other has to be about an historical re-search with has to be a kind of an essay and an article of free topic. Also we have to make a 16-strip comic with free topic. All articles have to have headlines and must have a section for that specific arti-cle. This magazine could be an advance learning when some requirements are accomplished. First an extra project got to be added from any subject, an other arti-cle about choice theory or SHICKEL also got to be added, we got to create a slogan and finally add another publicity. Amaz-ingly this learning could also be a magis-ter one when an article talking about some thing you are expert on is in the magazine and another project got to be added. Every quarter got to be at least 12 pages long including the back cover, which has publicity, and the front cover. As a real magazine, it has to have name, logo and a personal design. You can’t put copy-paste articles and if you put an image that is not taken by you, a footnote is needed.

My magazine is called The Informant; it had six articles, four projects and other two articles. My first project was about the company we create on geography’s class, the next project was the biology class pro-ject on which we opened a mammal’s heart and we observe how it was. Another project that I talked about in the magazine is the cheese project, when we learned to make cheese. I made a review of an es-say about Newton and I include it on the magazine and the last project that I in-cluded, for advance, in the magazine was the project of the magazine. I had to do three articles, my free topic article was an interview to my mom, the environmental article was about the electric cars and they contribution to the environment and the historical research was about Neil Armstrong, besides this three articles I did an article about the choice theory for get-ting advance. I did a comic about the golden rule, where I used dialogues, onomatopoeia and not copy-pasted. My ads where totally made by me, photo, in-formation, and all the text. The design was the same as the one last bimester and is personal. I think this project is very useful because is a very good way to present evidence of all the bimester in a simple way. I liked this project and I enjoy doing it, although I made it in five days.

“A Giant Leap For Mankind”

Neil Armstrong was born on August 5- 1930 in Wapakoneta, Ohio. He made his-tory because he was the first man who stepped on the moon. Thanks to is educa-tion and his past he had the experience that took him to this meaningful event on history. Neil’s flight passion started when his fa-ther, Stephen Armstrong, took him to the Cleveland Air Races when he only was two years. Then when he had six he had his first airplane flight, when he and his father took a ride on a Ford Trimotor. His father worked for the Ohio state govern-ment, so he and his family had to move multiple times. When his father finally stopped moving they stayed on Wa-pakoneta and he attended to Blume High School. He started taking flight lessons on High School and even he got his flight certificate before he got his driver license. Armstrong went to Purdue University where he studied aerospace engineering, besides he was accepted on the Massa-chusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) but an engineer (who went to MIT) said to him that it was not necessary, that he could get good education without going all the way to Cambridge or MIT. He committed to two years of study, and then he served in the United States Navy for three years and he obtain a degree afterwards. He was awarded with many degrees that qualify him as a very good Aerospatiale engineer with top grades in his subjects, he also got some doctorates from some Universities that were honored to him. He finally graduated from Purdue and in 1958 he was selected for the U.S. Air Force’s Man In Space Soonest Program. After this he got selected as a part of the pilot consultant group for a military space plane. In 1962 he was named one of the six pilots who will fly the space plane

when it got built. But on September 13 1962 Deke Slayton asked Armstrong if he wanted to be part of the second group of NASA astronauts and he said yes imme-diately. Armstrong was selected for the second group along with Eliot See another civilian, which also was a naval aviator. Before Armstrong was part of the Apollo program he passed through a very impor-tant program in his life, which was the Gemini program, which included the Gem-ini 8 mission that was the mission on which Armstrong finally went out to space. Another mission included in the Gemini program was the Gemini 11 that was a complete successfully mission, all the ob-jectives were accomplished. President Lyndon B. Johnson told and invite Arm-strong and his wife to a 24-day tour through South America with Dick Gordon, who was also in the Gemini 11, and other government officials. But the program the changed his life was the Apollo program. On April 5-1967 Armstrong attended a meeting with other seventeen veteran as-tronauts and Deke Slayton. Slayton told them that the guys who were going to be part of the moon-landing mission were on the room. Slayton chose Armstrong to be the backup crew for Apollo 9 but because of the design and manufacturing delays in the Lunar Module, Apollo 8 and Apollo 9 swapped crew and according to the rota-tion scheme, Armstrong would command Apollo 11. In another meeting Armstrong and Slayton had, Slaton told that he had to choose between working in the Apollo 11 with Buzz Aldrin, a lunar module pilot, or replacing him with Jim Lovell, the commander of Gemini 12. He chose work-ing with Aldin because of two things, first he said that he worked very good with Aldin and second, because he thought that replacing Aldin with Lovell will de-graded Lovell because he was the Gemini

12 commander and being then giving him the unofficially lowest ranked member is just not fair. He was chose as the first man to step in the moon because NASA saw Armstrong as a person who did not have a big ego. Armstrong said that the loudest stage of the launching process was the first one, even louder that the Gemini 8 launch and that its capsule was bigger. The objective of the Apollo 11 was to land safely in the moon and they did. They had minor problems, like when land-ing Armstrong noticed they were going to land in an area considered unsafe so he took over the manual control and tried to find a safer area. This took longer than planned and they were concerned that the fuel was running low but the they realized they had more than twice they needed and thought, they could finally land on the moon at 20:17:39 UTC on July 20 -1969. They had to rest before going out of the ship, they did, but they were anxious about it so they requested permission to go. Armstrong was the first to go down the ladder, then he put his left foot at 2:56 UTC July 21-1969 on the lunar ground and said one of the most significant lines in all history: “That’s one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind”.

Neil’s Armstrong footprint on the moon’s surface. Taken from: http://www.nasa.gov/missions/highlights/quiz_questions.html He then declared that he planned this line for some after lunching and think of it again after landing but he accidentally dropped the “a”. Then Aldrin stepped in the moon and became the second human

to step on the moon. They completed their tasks; they spent over two-and-a-half hours on the moon. They came back from the moon and made a water landing and then the USS hornet picked them up. They were on an eighteen-day quarantine to be sure they had not picked up some disease or infection from the moon.

Taken from: http://cmgworldwide.com/news/?tag=neil-armstrong Neil Armstrong dedicated all his life to fly-ing and space and he accomplished eve-rything he wanted to, he is a dedicated man and a very responsible and will al-ways be remembered in history. His lines will echo for many, many years after we all disappear. His story can also teach a lesson: you can accomplish any dream you have, you only need commitment and perseverance.

Dubstep a new genre

Music, is a very good way of expressing feeling, ideas and most important yourself. Nowadays the music is very electronic with different type of technologic instru-ments that produce the sound that are included in the “modern” music. Dubstep is one of those genres that use that type of instruments and technology such as turntables and sequencers. This genre originated on South London, England on the late 1990’s on a club called For-ward>>. The Dubstep term was used until 2002 when record labels such as Bingo and Lifestyle started this term to describe this type of music.

The Dubstep music accentuates the sub-bass content also it has dissonant harmo-nies. The Dubstep music is used very much as a remix to songs from different genres, because of its electronic sounds and very matching sounds that can be

easily incorporated to the song. From this genre a lot of different other genres have been born like Brostep and Deathstep, which are some “kind” of Dubstep music that involve more robotic sounds and tend to be more aggressive than the regular Dubstep genre. There are many-highlighted artists in this genre and my favorite is Skrillex. This guy, also known as Sony John Moore, uses in his music a lot of characteristics of the Dubstep genre and the Brostep genre. His most recognized album is “Scary Mon-sters and Nice Sprites” that launched him to fame in the past few years. On the 2012 Grammys he was nominated for 5 awards winning in 3 of them. Many people say that they are not artist because they only use technology to compose music, but what they don’t know is that using this equipment is very diffi-cult. Since this is a growing genre, that is beginning to be recognized and popular between a lot of teenagers all over the world, people should support it and be open to new kind of music that they might like and support new artists.

Amazing changes

The universe, is a very complicated term to describe and define; is a very hard thing to understand and it is complicated to explain what it really is. Scientists recently have dis-covered that the universe is still enlarging thousand of kilometers in every directions hence each hour is larger and time is passing faster thanks to this. There are few things that we can explain and we can show, things that happen on earth for example. Things such as changes on the matter, physical and chemical changes in matter, to be exact. This bimester on chemistry class we learned about this changes and how to identify them. The physi-cal changes on matter are those changes that do not affect the molecular structure of the substance. This includes changes in color temperature shape and movement of the sub-stance.

Unlike physical changes, chemicals changes do change the molecular structure of the sub-stance. When these substances are submitted to some essential circumstances such as pres-sure, fire or a mixture with another substances make these to react and create another sub-stance.

Physical and chemical changes occur every-where and always through the entire universe even in our bodies there are chemical and physical changes, like saliva or puberty when we suffer many changes. The chemical and physical changes are very important in nature because they help the environment to be on a controlled status.

The photo above shows a physical change when two substances are mixed but their molecular structure is without change.

The photo above shows what happens when potas-sium and chlorine are mixed and create potassium chloride. This have both changes physical and chemi-cal changes; the physical is the change in the color and the chemical the creation of the new substance.

How does chemi-cal and physical changes differ?

A “United” Organization

Wars have brought the world into a time of violence and discrimination. The First World War left Europe de-stroyed and in bankrupt and with a lot of other consequences that nobody wants to repeat. Thanks to this event, this Great War, the League of Nations was created in order to prevent a world war to happen again. This organization functioned without the cooperation of the necessary countries. Finally the or-ganization failed in his purpose because in 1945 another big war exploded. The Second World War was the root of discrimination, segregation and racism; also this war is well remembered be-cause of the new technology used on it. The bombs that were launched in Hi-roshima and Nagasaki made people un-derstand that war are bad and they needed to make a strong organization to avoid this wars to happen again. That is how the United Nations was created. Franklin D. Roosevelt thought of the name of United Nations to name the allies this idea was being developed years before the Second World War but thanks to this war the incentive was supported by more countries. The UN was officially existent on October 24 1945 with 46 signatory countries. The UN is in charge of discussion and find-ing solutions for the different problems all around the world. Nowadays the UN is composed of 193 nations actively participating on it.

The United Nations have adopted 8 mil-lennium goals that are very important if talking of a sustainable world sur-rounded by respect. The goals are: Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger, Achieve universal primary education, Promote gender equality and empower women, Reduce child mortality rates, Improve maternal health, Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases, Ensure environmental sustainability and Develop a global partnership for devel-opment. Each and every one of these goals are important for our world’s fu-ture. Help us make a better world, sup-port the UN and give the best of you.

Sun: the future of energy

1Nowadays people are using technology for many things, even the simple things like cleaning a house. All this technol-ogy needs something to work; this is called energy. The energy topic is a very concerning one and one of the most important in society. Humans have been using not renewable energy for a lot of time, the best example is the cars; Cars, we normally use, uses gas as fuel in order to produce energy and function, this energy source has two problems. The first one is that this kind of energy producer is not renewable and will end at some point; we are wasting fossil fuels. The second problem is the wastes the burning of fossil fuels brings; a lot of carbon dioxide is being thrown into the environment affecting it in a big way since there are a lot of cars in the world. If people realize that this source of energy is damaging the planet and the best solution is to adapt our life style into a more sustainable one such as renewable energy. The future is going to bring many good things to us, like more advance tech-nology that’s is going to be applied to many different jobs. Also the future is going to bring to us a very good idea of renewable energy: solar energy. Be-sides the fact that solar energy is al-ready being used today, solar energy is the best way of solving lots of our prob-lems concerning energy sources. This king of renewable energy can be adapted into many things like the car example, the solar panels could be in- 1 Checked by David Arizabaleta.

stalled in the car in order to obtain the energy from the sun and move. It would solve both of the problems planted be-fore, since the sun is always there it is a renewable type of energy and it will not produce any kind of wastes. Solar pan-els are staring to be the best choice for a society ruled by taking care of the envi-ronment. Event though cars like the one presented before are already being build, in the future this type of cars will be cheaper and more people could use them.

Earth is going to be devastated in envi-ronmental focus because of the wastes we, the humans, are throwing directly to it and that should stop. People should realize the important environment is and how to take care of it. Solar energy is the future so let’s show them how it would be this brighter future.

The RMUN experience The UN was created to debate the dif-ferent problems in the world and find-ing a solution to them. That is what teenagers want, they want to share their opinion in different topics, and they want an opportunity to express them-selves. Thanks to that desire of partici-pating in the United Nations the school models of United Nations were created. Last December we, the students of the Rochester School, were informed that the Rochester Model of the United Na-tions, or RMUN, was going to be on February and that we have got to pre-pare, also they gave us the countries we were going to represent and the com-mittees on which we were going to be debating. Mine was Japan in Disec. Since I like the United Nations so much I was very excited about it so I research and study a lot in order to prepare for it. In the first meeting with the committee we talk about the topics and we solve our doubts. After the vacations, each and every day I read an article about the topic concerning my committee but I was informed that my country had changed, now I was representing Libya, it really do not matter which country I was going to represent I was sure I will give the best of me. Finally when the day came I was very confident and sure I was going to do well on this model and I was deter-mined to win a mention of honor. I read my opening speech in a very well and mature way and after all have read their opening speeches the debate begun.

The first topic was very interesting and many delegates were involved in it so we were all trying to prove our coun-try’s point. Since I was very involved on the conflict I had to clarify my posi-tion, and I did. Many wanted to know the solutions I was proposing and vice-versa; many delegates had very interest-ing ideas on how to solve this conflict.

After doing this positions were taken and different blocks did work papers, we read part of it and the other part the next day. In the second day we voted each of the work papers in order to see which of them became a resolutions of the United Nations, also started with the second topic, which also involved my country a lot. Again I was clarifying my position and what my country wanted. Solutions were given and most of the conflict was solved but a crisis came and there were some discussions be-tween different countries, kind of con-fronting each other, I was discussing a lot with the United States delegate and

Me debating at the Disec committee in Cafam Floresta.

PAGE 34

we gave our reasons to be against each other. At the end of the day we could not finish the working papers but we were very confident in our resolutions to the problem. In the third day at the general assembly the committees started reading the resolutions in order to vote them but a crisis interrupted this and the general assembly had to solve this crisis as soon as possible. Even though my country was not involved in the conflict I still gave my opinion and some solutions that were taken into ac-count. Some arguments were moving this very interesting debate a lot.. This was the last part of the debates on the RMUN but after this came the closing ceremony and it was there where the honors were going to be delivered. I was nervous I wanted to win so badly. The ceremony began and after the an-thems the presidents of the Disec com-mittee had to give their honors. First to the best opening speech, was give to the Iraqi delegation, then the best speaker and the two most outstanding delega-tions, none of this were me. A honor was left: Best delegate; that was the honor I wanted and I was looking for and finally they called my name. I was very happy, the smile on my face was from ear to ear, and most importantly I was very proud of my self I have reached my goal and I accomplished it successfully. During the whole model I felt very comfortable and very confident of my self. I knew I was going to give my best and I did and now while making this article I know for sure that if I settle a goal to accomplish, with perseverance I will accomplish it. I like a lot to express

m self and let others know what I thinks and what I want to say about a topic so I know the model of the United nations is good for me. I feel proud of this and I want to repeat this model a thousand times, I remember all the memories from this moment and all of them make me feel a peace inside of me I don’t re-gret a single thing about this model. Now a new model is coming I have got to prepare very well for it, I have got to represent the school so I got to leave the Rochester School’s name very high.

Remembering the old Rochester

Since I have memory the Rochester School has been located diagonal to the Cedritos mall, next to Santa Francisca Romana School and An-glo-Colombian School. This location was very well planned and when we talk about traffic, the school prepared in order to avoid heavy traffic at this direction. Development is very good and the Rochester School has decided that in order to be a developed and quality school, its site must change. The new site of the Rochester School is twice as larger as the old site, it has techno-logical and most advance buildings and one of the most important things of all it is going to use renewable en-ergy. The School’s new site is going to be very developed and it is going to one of the most advance site in Colombia. Even though change is a good thing and the new site is going to be a better site that the actual one, students say that the will miss it and that they want to remember it in a good way. In computer science class we decided to make that happen, the project of this bimester was to create a video on which we show one of the thins we were going to miss and we wanted to remember. Things such as the famous sport “Palito” or the dome, things that we will no longer have in the new site because of its design.

My group and I, decided that the things we will miss a lot and the new site does not have is a place where we can walk in circles passing through the courts and some classes, in front of the dome, next to the store, in front of the kennel and back again to the courts. That was a path that every student in the Rochester School has known as “la vuelta” and most of the students of the school has traveled through this path talking with friends or looking of someone or just walking. Our video started at the store, we film while walking, passing next to he soccer court, where little kids where playing soccer, we film the entire court and then the basketball court but there where no students there. After that we filmed the hall where we meet with some of our friends making our video very touch-ing and finally we ended up in the dome recording the model of the School’s new site. I think this project is a very inspiring and a very good project. We all know we are going to miss this site but now we have ways to remember it like this video.

Rochester’s new site’s first year is going to be 2012-2013. Taken from: www.rochester.edu.co/

A future city

Cities are starting to get larger and more complicated to transport and make activities in them. Traffic is very heavy and our energy since it is no renewable is damaging and hurt-ing the environment, also our com-munication is becoming very com-plicated and stressful. So people started wondering how will a future city be? How will it look like? And how does we humans are going to act before it? I wonder my self the same thing and as a project of the English class we had to make a presentation of how we imagine the future cities in 8 different aspects such as energy, health, communication and sports. We, Santiago Escalante and me, started with the sports, how are going to be sports like in the future, and we think that in the future sports are go-ing to change a lot. Technology is going to be very involved in them ad on the way they are judge, sports that need an energy source are going to be equipped with renewable energy sources and our way of watching this sports is going to change; nowadays we can see it in a high quality format and even on 3 dimensions but in the future this two are going to combine and make a new format that will be just like being on the court. Then we talked about communication and stated that it will also use technology and it will be much simpler that to-

day. I explained that communication in the present has one or even two mediators between the receptor and the interlocutor and that made the communications loose their quality, but in the future this won’t happen any more because communication is going to be direct. Also we talked about architecture in the future the normal architecture is going to in-clude renewable energy sources in order to that house or building to be sustainable; also this new housing is going to reuse a lot of its wastes such as water that is going to make a de-termined cycle after it leaves the structure at all. This magazine has been dedicated mostly to the environment and in the city of the future presentation we also talked about the renewable en-ergy and most energy was going to be like. We said that most of our en-ergy was going to be solar energy since it is a very viable sort of energy that is environmental friendly. Cars, houses, buildings are going to use this energy and this panels won’t be a problem because they are going to be located at their roofs to avoid the waste of space. Many countries use nuclear energy to maintain them selves, they use a procedure called fission, this fission produces a con-siderable amount of energy and a lot of wastes, but in the future this will

Page 37: The Informant 3rd edition

ROCHESTER SCHOOL MARCH 15 2012

PAGE 37

be no longer a problem because sci-entists will discover a way to make fusion possible. Fusion is a proce-dure that the sun makes in order to produce its own energy making very few wastes if not nothing of wastes. This procedure is, how it name says, when atomic nuclei fuse together in other to make a single heavier nu-cleus and when they are joining to-gether they release energy that can be used.

Then we talked about one of the most important matters today: trans-portation. We stated that first it will be more organized, authorities will find a way on which the transporta-tion will be organized and safe and the new cars that are moving through the streets are going to use renewable energy as stated before. Prices to use planes are going to be easy to afford and many will use them. We thought of the future health to and we de-cided that in the future medical tools such as prosthesis will be advance and sophisticated, also medical

equipment will be more precise and ambulances will have more equip-ment in order to treat the patient on its way to the hospital. Most of our activities will include technology and that is what future is going to be all about. Technology will be more advance and elaborated also it will be lighter and simpler to use. Digital glass will be everywhere and will be use for everything and technology could replace some peo-ple in their jobs. Since technology is going to be everywhere most of it is going to be cheap and everyone can afford it.

We don’t know how future is going to be, no one is totally sure on how it will be but we can imagine it. We can imagine a brighter future, a sim-pler future and a future on which we could sustain as a developed society. Humans have curiosity so they will never stop wondering what is going to come next?
