T he Orlando Magic is a professional basket-ball team based in Orlando, Florida. They play in the Southeast Division of the Eastern

Conference of the National Basketball Association (NBA) and are currently coached by Stan Van Gundy. The franchise was founded in 1989 as an expansion franchise and has had such notable NBA stars such as Shaquille O'Neal, Penny Hardaway, Grant Hill, Rashard Lewis, Tracy McGrady, Steve Francis, Dwight

Howard, Ben Wallace, and Vince Carter throughout its young history. The franchise has also been in the playoffs for more than half of their existence (12 playoff appearances in 21 years). Orlando has been the most successful of the four expansion teams brought into the league in 1988 and 1989 in terms of winning percentage. As of 2010, they are the only team in the "big four" sports leagues to play in the city of Orlando.

Dad, I Need Your Help!Prepare Your Child for College and See Them Succeed"Don't fail to correct your children. You won't kill them by being firm, and it may even save their lives." (Proverbs 23:13-14, CEV)

Preparing for college is a goal that both you and your child need to work towards. It’s vital that you take an active role during this

process, to ensure your child succeeds! Most high schools will focus on college prep, particularly dur-ing the past two years of school, but getting ready for college involves more than ensuring your child takes the right courses and fills out applications.

Fear of the UnknownFor most students, this is the first time they will

be living alone. This means that they need to be-come responsible and dependent upon themselves while they are in middle school and high school. This not only teaches responsibility throughout high school, but will prepare them for living on their own at college. Time management is one area that ends up haunting students in college and this issue can be prevented if they are taught good time manage-ment habits while in high school.

Financial Literacy Finances are another area of concern for stu-

dents going to college. Teaching your child how to manage their money and set a budget early in high school is important. Most high school students will begin a summer job or part-time job at some point in their high school career. This is the perfect opportunity for you to get your child a checking ac-count and teach them how to make smart financial decisions. Students should also be taught about credit card debt early.

Applying for Financial Aid & Scholarships

Financial aid is also a step in college preparation that both the student and parents need to be aware of. You can apply for federal student aid as early as January 1st, prior to starting college in August. Keep in mind, the absolute last day that you can turn in

the FAFSA for federal aid is June 30th .In order to apply, you will need to have your income taxes completed prior to filling out the application. It is vitally important that both the student and parents complete their income taxes as early as possible to ensure that they can send in the FAFSA (Free Appli-cation for Federal Student Aid) as early as possible. The earlier you send it in, the earlier you will be able to determine if you'll receive federal aid, school assistance, scholarships and how much you qualify for in student loans. The FAFSA can also be filed online at www.fafsa.ed.gov.

Finally, scholarship applications can be sent into schools and other organizations a year to six months prior to school beginning. Most colleges have an early scholarship application deadline. This dead-line is generally around February 1st prior to the fall semester beginning. Search for scholarships online as well as locally from various organizations in your community. Many corporations also offer scholar-ships to students of employees and it is important that you look into those as well, if they are available.

Following these simple steps, you will be able to prepare your child for college and set them up for success, not only financially but also teach them the life skills they will need for when they are on their own at college!

May is dedicated to cel-ebrating mothers. Such an honor is rightfully

deserved. However, each year as when June approaches June, I am saddened by what I believe to be a great contrast in the amount of at-tention given to Father's Day. As a whole, I think society often down-plays the roles and value of men. It seems that every time we turn on the television, men are being de-picted as dogs, cheaters, liars, and the like. I met a man one day who was a victim of emotional abuse in his marriage. His story inspired me to research emotional abuse. As I searched online, I discovered that out of all the articles found on the first three pages of the search engine, there was only one that catered to the needs of emotion-ally abused men. As I read that article, one line stuck out to me. In essence, it said that emotional abuse among men often goes un-addressed because they often have no one that they can trust to talk about it with. As men, we tend to fear the appearance of weakness when we expose our vulnerabili-ties. As I continued my search, I started pondering over all of the other issues that “require” men to walk around on lumpy carpets (because so much has to be swept under the proverbial rug).

If we walk around on lumpy carpets long enough, sooner or later those lumps either trip us up or we learn to navigate around them. The problem is, the damage becomes more and more severe with each fall. We fall to anger issues, ad-dictive behaviors, sexual promiscuity, or other

self-destructive behavior patterns. Sadly our families usually end up in the fallout of our fowl ups.

Learning to navigate around the lumps isn't such a good thing ei-ther, because it means we never actually address the things that the rug is hiding head-on. Learning to navigate around the lumps requires so much energy and attention that we are rendered ineffective and un-productive. And again, our families suffer as a result.

So how are such dilemmas re-solved? The answer, although quite simple, is probably easier said than done because it requires healthy confrontation. I encourage every man, if you have “fallen,”get back up. Do some sweeping and rid yourself of the lumps. If you can't do it alone, get help. It doesn't mean you are weak. It means you are wise. Understand that the trav-esty is not falling, but allowing the same things to continually trip you up. There is greatness in you. It is time for you (and your family) to live again.

For the men who have not “fall-en” or for those who have fallen and recovered, extend a hand and a listening ear to another man who is down right now. Be patient with him. Recovering from a fall takes time. You never know who you may need down

the road. So remember, You Only Live Once...

Men's Health

It is understood that women by nature are strong, nurturing caregivers who are often the backbone of the family unit. What is

not often understood is the important role that these nurturing caregivers can play in improv-ing the health status of the men in their lives. Men’s health issues don’t affect only men; they have a significant impact on everyone around them; and because women live longer than men, they see their fathers, brothers, sons, and husbands suffer or die prematurely. Women are in a unique position to be able to help fight the obstacles men face in getting the health care they need.

At this point, the women are probably think-ing, “I already do more than my share of the laundry, the cooking, and the childcare. Can’t he do anything for himself?" Of course he can. But there’s a good chance that without some gentle pushing from you, he won’t. So it may be up to you. More than half of premature deaths among men are preventable. By educating yourself about potential male health problems and passing that information on to the men you love, you may be able to save a life. And by en-couraging all the men in your life to realize that even the smallest symptoms can sometimes be serious and may need to be discussed with their doctors, you’ll be helping them take a more ac-tive role in their own health care.

Working women understand the difficulties men face in taking time off to get to doctor’s appointments all too well. Women can also relate to the tendency of many men to put their family’s health above their own. However, the obstacles men face in admitting health problems to a doctor can be surprising or seem strange from a female perspective. Most men are taught from an early age to cope quietly with pain instead of telling others about their ailments.

Being told, either by family or peers, that big boys don’t cry over skinned knees often leads to reluctance to seek medical attention for health afflictions decades later, especially if symptoms are related to sexual health or not plainly visible.

Not all health problems have symptoms that will be noticeable to a man’s partner. Even men who are the picture of health can be in a losing battle with prostate cancer, diabetes, or other silent killers. The best way to detect these kinds of illnesses is by getting regular checkups. It is suggested that women try to bring their partners into the “family health schedule” if he feels that seeing a doctor when nothing is visibly wrong is a waste of time or money. When the father sees the rest of family getting physicals every August, he might be willing to join in order to help set a good example for the children.

As inconvenient as it may be, the fact that young women often have to go to a physician for reproductive health issues such as birth con-trol, common infections, or prenatal care means that women are aware of the need to visit a health care provider regularly. Although doctors suggest that men begin getting annual Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) tests in their forties, men in their twenties can take advantage of free health screenings to form good habits and build trust with their physician.

Monitoring the results of individual tests is clearly important, but watching for changes over time by comparing regular exams that begin at an early age can be much more telling. If your partner is not keeping track of the test results, you can mention that both men and women need to keep a lookout for changes. Ask your partner to help you review family medical his-tory and talk about upcoming doctor’s appoint-ments with each other. If you have any concerns about his health, you can ask him the day before the appointment to ask his physician about them. Write questions or key words down as you talk about them, and give him the list before

he goes. He might appreciate the concern, and getting questions ready ahead of time can help make the most of the trip to the doctor. If the men in your life are medically uninsured which can be a barrier to them seeking timely health care services please visit www.pcanorangecounty.com to receive information on affordable health care solutions for him and the entire family.

In addition to regular doctor visits, self-checks are a crucial and easy way to protect your and your partner’s health. Despite their name, self-checks are much more thorough when done by a partner. For example, skin cancer in men is predominantly seen on their backs, which of course, is much easier to be seen by a partner. Getting your partner involved in your self-checks and being involved in his helps insure that they become a routine.

Sisters remember you all hold the key to the men in your life living longer, stronger, healthier lives.

IF THE MEN IN YOUR LIFE CONTINUE TO AVOID GETTING MEDICAL ATTENTION, THE FOLLOWING APPROACHES MAY HELP:

Find health providers which have week-1. end and evening appointments or have offices close to his work.

Schedule simultaneous appointments 2. for the both of you and make fun plans to do something together afterwards.

Find out whether he is more comfort-3. able seeing a male or female health care provider and make sure he’s seeing the one he prefers. On a related note, try to avoid physicians who tend to scold.

Recruit male friends or relatives with 4. good health habits to help reinforce your message.

Point out the connection between good 5. health and good physical and mental performance in sports, work stamina, etc.

Gently remind him that his children 6. will be influenced by the example he sets when forming life-long health habits.

Decide on an exercise routine that 7. involves, and is enjoyable to, the both of you. If necessary, make the exercise out to be something for you that you need his support for even if it’s primarily for his own benefit.

IngredientsVegetable oil for the pans 2 1/2 cups all-purpose fl our 1 1/2 cups sugar 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon fi ne salt 1 teaspoon cocoa powder 1 1/2 cups vegetable oil 1 cup buttermilk, at room temperature 2 large eggs, at room temperature 2 tablespoons red food coloring (1 ounce) 1 teaspoon white distilled vinegar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Cream Cheese Frosting, recipe follows Crushed pecans, for garnish

DirectionsPreheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Lightly oil and fl our 3 (9 by 1 1/2-inch round) cake pans.

In a large bowl, sift together the fl our, sugar, bak-ing soda, salt, and cocoa powder. In another large bowl, whisk together the oil, buttermilk, eggs, food coloring, vinegar, and vanilla.

Using a standing mixer, mix the dry ingredi-ents into the wet ingredients until just combined and a smooth batter is formed.

Divide the cake batter evenly among the prepared cake pans. Place the pans in the oven evenly spaced apart. Bake, rotating the pans halfway through the cooking, until the cake pulls away from the side of the pans, and a toothpick inserted in the center of the cakes comes out clean, about 30 minutes.

Remove the cakes from the oven and run a knife around the edges to loosen them from the sides of the pans. One at a time, invert the cakes onto a plate and then re-invert them onto a cooling rack, round-ed-sides up. Let cool completely.

Frost the cake. Place 1 layer, rounded-side down, in the middle of a rotating cake stand. Using a pal-ette knife or off set spatula spread some of the cream cheese frosting over the top of the cake. (Spread enough frosting to make a 1/4 to 1/2-inch layer.) Carefully set another layer on top, rounded-side down, and repeat. Top with the remaining layer and cover the entire cake with the remaining frosting. Sprinkle the top with the pecans.

Representative Geraldine Thompson Hosts 3rd Annual Health Fair Lake Eola

Our bodies are the temples that God has given us to make our earthly journey. How can we

present them faultless and preserve them to increase our service here? We must control our diets, exercise and obtain reg-ular medical check ups to identify things that may not be functioning right in our bodies. Then, we must seek treatment if needed. If you visited the doctor recently and want to know if your body’s systems are still functioning properly or if you haven’t seen a doctor in some time, you can get free medical check ups during the Juneteenth Family and Adolescent Health and Opportunities Fair presented by State Representative Geraldine F. Thompson on Saturday, June 19 from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. at Lake Eola.

22 | www.GospelNow.Net

Page 27: GospelNow 3rd Edition

An air-conditioned, mobile health unit will be located at Lake Eola with physicians on site to provide medical checks including cholesterol, glucose, vision, dental, HIV and other screen-ings. There is no cost for these services to you and youth in your family who, because of their young age, many times don’t visit a physician. Agencies that will assist with the event are shown. Don’t miss this opportunity to obtain free medical screenings and to learn about educational and training opportunities that are available to you. A free gift will be pro-vided to individuals who call to register early.

To register, call Landra Robeson or Brittany Thomas at 407-245-1511 in the office of State Representative Geraldine F. Thompson. You may register by email at:[email protected]. Also, be sure to join the fun during the 2010 Florida Juneteenth Music Festival. Please go to www.floridajuneteenth.com for all event details. The festival runs from June 12-19.

God works in mysterious ways; showing him-self to us through signs, visions, other people who inspire us in our lives, and even in our line of work. Pastor Christopher Walker is a native of Orlando, raised in the city’s southwest

Richmond Heights neighborhood. Even as a young child he has always wanted to be a preacher and a servant of the Lord. His natural leadership ability and his love for God character-ized his school years, and eventually shaped him for military

service. It was during his military career that he had a revelation; and it changed his life forever.

While away from family, friends, and those close to him; he preached and

expressed his love for God while fighting and explaining to fel-

low soldiers that God would save and protect them. He has since become a pastor, raising up a body of believers and establishing the min-istry birthed through him by God, the Cathedral of Power International Church in Clermont, Florida. Since 2002, he and his wife Pastor Carla Walker have been preaching sermons together. The ministry had its humble beginnings as

a bible study with only five members. By the time the

church had its first “official” service, the congregation

had grown to fifty members and has been flourishing ever

since. Pastor Walker stepped outside of the “busyness” of his

life and ministry to share with me his calling from the Lord, his

future plans for himself and the church, and his mission in life.

- Interview by Nick Grace

Pastor Christopher Walker

Page 29: GospelNow 3rd Edition

How are you Pastor on this glorious day that the Lord has made?I'm doing fantastic!

When and how did you know that preaching was your calling? When I was a kid growing up in Richmond Heights in Orlando, I would gather all of my friends in the neigh-borhood in my grandmother’s backyard and we'd play church. I'd turn over a trash can and use it as my pulpit. I'd preach and lay hands on them and they'd fall in the dirt and I'd tell them that God can clean them up (smile). Then as a teenager at Jones High School, I'd jokingly turn a class lesson and even lunch into a church session. Then I joined the military at eighteen and it wasn't until I got to basic train-ing that I realized God was really tug-ging on my heart.

How did you become the founding father of Cathedral of Power International Church, in Clermont, Florida? Why was Clermont the destination for your vision? In 2002, I was a worship leader at a church in Apopka and I knew God was calling me into ministry; but I didn't know where I'd end up. One day I drove my wife to Clermont to show her where I spent my summers as a kid visiting my great grandmother who lived there. We didn’t have a church on our mind; we were just looking for a reasonable home to buy. When I got to Clermont and looked around, I knew it was the place. We started having bible study with 5 people in our living room, and six months later we had our fi rst offi cial service with 50 people and the rest as they say is history.

How does it feel to preach side by side with your sig-nifi cant other and how do you all bring out the best in each other? It is awesome to work with my wife. We are both diff er-ent in our presentation styles, which gives the people a great balance. I am more of the teacher and she is more of the charismatic preacher. We both were worship lead-ers when we met, so music is a passion for both of us. I believe we bring out the best in each other in that, where I am weak she is strong and vice versa.

Explain how others embraced your teachings and work overseas in the various locations you have traveled to?I have been received very well overseas because I have always tried to stay true to who I am, and not try and be another person. You can always do great things when you are the best YOU.

I recently read a quote which you made, “God gave me my season to produce and promote gospel music; it is now time to promote the gospel (Word) and produce souls for the kingdom!” I believe it is a very powerful statement. Can you please elaborate on the meaning and how you accomplish this task on a daily basis?I've had great opportunities to produce gospel segments for Marie Osmond’s Children's Telethon, Walt Disney's 25th Anniversary, Co-host Bobby Jones Gospel on BET, and help

coordinate and host the House of Blues Gospel Brunch. As a producer, my job was to create a quality experience that would cause people to come back. As a promoter, my job was to market that experience. So when we started the church, our motto became "The place of expectancy". I want people to have the expectation when they come; that they can expect a good word, expect

good worship, expect good people, and have an experi-ence that makes them want to return and tell someone else. Those that profess Christianity should promote their experience with Christ with passion, so that we are pro-ducing the harvest that He says is ripe.

When do you feel that your mission is complete? The mission is never complete. It is a constant mission. When Jesus left the disciples, he left intending for them to continue the mission. I pray that when I'm gone some-one will pick up the mantle and continue the vision and mission of COPI.

How can you be contacted outside of the pulpit?I feel that Pastors should be accessible to those they serve. I can be reached by cell phone, email, face book, and you can fi nd me on Sundays in the lobby greeting everyone.

Do you have any additional comments for our readers and listeners?I would like to encourage every reader to consider accepting Christ in their life and become the example for others to see as they too discover their purpose.

“...it is now time to promote

the gospel and produce souls for

the kingdom!”

E ff ective on May 11,2010, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) will only be issuing the redesigned Permanent

Resident Card - commonly known as the "Green Card" - to incorporate several major new secu-rity features. The Green Card redesign is the latest advance in USCIS ongoing eff orts to deter immigration fraud. State-of-the-art technology incorporated into the new card prevents counter-feiting, obstructs tampering, and facilitates quick and accurate authentication.

The redesigned “green card” replaces the version that is a beige color. The permanent resident card was coined the term “green card” because the origi-nally issued card was green in color. The redesigned “green card” seems to have the color green incorpo-rated into the design so will be consistent with its commonly known reference of a “green card”.

The enhanced features will better serve law enforcement, employers, and immigrants, all of whom look to the Green Card as defi nitive proof of authorization to live and work in the United States. Among the benefi ts of the redesign: Secure optical media will store biometrics for rapid and reliable identifi cation of the card holder. Holographic

images, laser engraved fi ngerprints, and high resolution micro-images will make the card nearly impossible to reproduce. Tighter integration of the card design with personalized elements will make it diffi cult to alter the card if stolen. Radio Frequency Identifi cation (RFID) capability will allow Customs and Border Protection offi cers at ports of entry to read the card from a distance and compare it immediately to fi le data. Finally, a preprinted return address will enable the easy return of a lost card to USCIS.

USCIS will replace Green Cards already in cir-culation as individuals apply for renewal or replacement.

A REUNION STORY:

P astor Dr. Roy E Smith, once called "Rev Robin Hood" now of Kissimmee Florida, has much to be thankful for. In 2006

he was sent to Federal Prison for 15 months for signing off on documents that contained false information in connection with several loans for his church, The Church of Dominion Inc. located in Greensburg Pennsylvania. The church used these loans to pur-chase a new facility, open up a day care center for single moms, a community food bank, and K-12 Christian School for at risk children who were failing in the public schools. Allegedly, a mortgage broker, in partnership with a minister consultant from Nigeria assisted the church and the pastor in obtain-ing the funds by exaggerating fi gures and assets. “In

addition, the church was promised a grant by an orga-nization that failed to register with the Department

of Charitable Organizations, thus was considered non existent,” said a representative from the church. Nevertheless the Pastor was left "holding the bag" as his fi nal sig-nature (along with the board) was present and he decided to enter a guilty plead. His family, the church board, and congregation supported him through the ordeal. “I was and

still remain saddened at the pain caused to my mem-bers, friends, and those in the community as a result of the situation that occurred. It did not matter whose fault it was, it mattered most to me that they were hurt by it, they were hurt by me, and for that I will always be sorry," said the Pastor.

On December 8, 2006 the Pastor arrived at the prison, FCI Loretto, located in Loretto Pennsylvania, only to discover that the roommate he was assigned to was his biological father, Roy E Milton of McKeesport whom he had not seen in over 20 years. (Pastor Smith’s mother, the late Rev. Saundra Smith of McKeesport was never legally married to Milton.) "Milton had been serving two drug related sentences at the time they were brought together" according to a former Prison staff member Mark Highland. The too reportedly reconciled their diff erences and became friends. "I received my fi rst Birthday Card from him at the prison," reported Pastor Smith. The pastor gave a sermon at the chapel service sponsored by the prison, and his dad publicly became a Christian. Pastor Smith was shortly released after only serving 8 months to community custody under supervision of the Bureau of Federal Prisons until January 7 of 2008. His father was scheduled for release in April (2009) and plans to move in with son and family in Florida. Pastor Smith said, "I wanted to wait until my Dad was back home

A REUNION STORY:

before I released this story. I felt it would cause him less trouble in the prison."

Pastor Roy Smith closed down the Church of Dominion (where his wife Rev. EShawnna Smith, had been pastoring in his absence) and has since founded a new ministry endeavor called, "Radical Change Ministries," located in Orlando Florida near where he, his wife and three children now reside. Some congregants from the former ministry have also relo-cated with him. A singer/songwriter and motivational speaker, Pastor Smith is currently working on a Music CD, as well as a book entitled "Medley of Strength," a story on how he feels God has allowed many trou-bling things to occur in his life including molestation, poverty, and emotional trauma, which brought him to a place of forgiveness, acceptance, and repentance for his silence in some of these matters. He plans to release these projects sometime in 2010. According to court documents, there was a pending civil suit against the former “Morning Glory” Financial fi rm that was settled out of court. The Nigerian Minister could no longer be located as he was using several aliases as well as several business names. “Its time to move forward, God has a plan,” said Pastor Smith.

Every reunion story in the bible had signifi cant pur-poses for future events. In Genesis chapter 42 when Joseph was reunited with his brothers, this event alone created divine appointments not only for the family, but for everyone in Egypt. God had set the family up for one of the greatest miracles they would know. The family had come full circle together and each had their own growth and change as a result of this reunion. Although Joseph was at outcast and was sold into slavery, his new found stature gave him the opportunity to bless his family and save their lives from the famine. This foreshadowing event points to the life of Christ, His resurrection and return.

Jesus said in John, 14:3 “I go to prepare a place for you that where I am you shall be also.” When we see our Lord again, it shall present two diff erent emotions. One, those who have committed their lives to Him shall express deeper worship and honor, whereas those who thought Him to be gone forever having been “left for dead” shall with sur-prise bow their knee in humility knowing that what He said was actually true. Joseph had revealed his brother’s humility in dreams that he once had. Nevertheless, I feel it was Joseph who was most humble when God had orchestrated such a divine appointment for him and his family.

I could only imagine the emotion felt between Pastor Smith and his father that day, but each event like this, constantly reminds us that we all will be together again with our Lord, Jesus Christ, and if God would have inspired another book after Revelation, to me the book would be called Jesus; the subtitle would read “a reunion story.”

I n 2010, there is an innovative way for ladies to be natural and have their hair last longer than ever. The new product that

has revolutionized hair care is 100% Virgin Indian Hair. Have you ever wondered how Tiny from the “Tiny & Toya Show,” LisaRaye and Beyonce continue to look so good? It is not by shopping at your local beauty supply store. This hair is big in New York, California, Atlanta, and Miami. It is sweeping the nation faster than the lace front wig; but the dif-ference is, it is actually healthier for your hair and you can keep your edges. In the long run you will save money!

You will fi nd that Virgin Indian Hair extensions are the premium highest quality hair. Virgin Remy

Hair is cut to provide full, fl ow-ing, beautiful hair. It is available in

straight, wavy and curly textures. You will be more than satisfi ed

with the quality of the hair. These extensions have 100% silky straight,

machine-weft hair which is made from natural single drawn hair; which

is premium hair that is naturally straight and can be worn wavy when wet, or can be

deep curled with proper treatment (please consult your stylist). Real Virgin Remy Hair

is on a machine weft that is naturally straight. Machine weft is where hair fi bers are sewn by

machine onto a "weft" in a fi xed pattern. Wefts are attached to your own hair by sewing them to a track (which is made from a tiny braid of your own hair “SEW IN").

This is how you wear real 100% Virgin Remy Hair. This is no gimmick ladies! This hair is 100% natural human hair that actually comes from a person in India who grew this hair and cut and sold it. The good thing about this hair is that you can swim with it as long as you wash your hair after swimming pool and hot tub use. Be sure to utilize conditioner afterwards. We recom-mend that you do not swim in salt water or braid the hair; but instead, wear it down and straight as this method is best for preventing tangling and matting.

History reveals that the non-synthetic hair pur-chased at your local salon or beauty supply store is collected from several diff erent sources. As a result, it goes through several diff erent treatments and steps before it is sold in the lovely packaging provided. The cuticles which are in the hair are going in many diff er-ent directions. In order to make it all lay down in one direction, the hair is dipped in acid which is referred to as an acid bath. After this occurs, the hair is then dipped in silicone which removes the excess cuticles, making the hair shiny. This entire process is equiva-lent to ten relaxers. We are always asked, “why not use Chinese hair rather than virgin Indian hair?” The answer to this question is that Chinese hair is hard and bone-like rather than wavy and soft; and it also varies in texture and color as well. T he idiom, “the apple doesn’t fall too far from the tree,” refl ects the inherent per-sonality and character traits that are

passed on from one generation to the next. Synonymous with that idiom; “like father, like son” is the phrase captured in the resemblance of one of Central Florida’s most progressive pas-tors and his father. Pastor Jonathan L. McKnight of Sanctuary of Praise Ministries in Orlando is a modern-day renaissance man whose mantle and mandate refl ect the impressions and impact of his life-long mentor, hero, and father; Bishop James E. McKnight, Sr. This phenomenal father, 5th gen-eration preacher, pastor, philanthropist, entrepre-neur, and author speaks poignantly about one of the most powerful relationships in his life, and the ministry that was birthed as a result.

You have a very exciting conference coming up next month. Tell us a little bit about it, where it will be held, when it will be held, and what it will address.

I am hosting the Travailing into the Supernatural Prayer Conference at my church, Sanctuary of Praise, located at 5600 Westgate Drive in Orlando, on July 15-17, 2010. The primary objective of the conference is no t only to provide an atmosphere for people to travail and cry out to God; but also to receive instruc-tion on how to pray. I believe two of the most vital tools necessary to obtain and maintain personal vic-tory are the Word of God and your personal prayer life.

How long have you been facilitating this conference and why are you inclined to continue doing it?

We’ve been doing the conference since 2007; and will continue as the Lord leads. I also recog-nize in the Body of Christ the need for people to be developed in prayer, as this is the most critical way we communicate with God.

Who can we expect as guest speakers and psalmists; and can anyone attend?

Ministering this year will be Dr. Joyce Rodgers, Dr. Angel Nunez, Bishop Dannie Williams, myself; and

the psalmists will be Myron Williams and Dorinda Clarke-Cole. The conference is open to everyone and it is free, but everyone must register. You may register at Sanctuary of Praise Ministries located at 5600 Westgate Drive in Orlando, at Eagle’s Nest Bookstore located at 805 S. Kirkman Road in Orlando, or by calling (407) 294-5487 or (407) 523-1139. You may also register online at www.sanctu-aryofpraise.org or www.jlmcknightministries.org.

From what I understand, God has given you a vision for an organization dealing speci cally with prayer. What is the purpose of the organization and how can someone become involved?

The Lord gave me a vision to develop a global movement of intercessors called the P.E.A.C.E. Prayer Army; where our mission is to unify the hearts, the minds and the godly focus of prayer intercessors all over the world and bring a force of victory and agreement corporately through eff ectual prayer. Anyone desiring to be connected in prayer with believers around the globe can join. This means you will be standing in agreement with others for God to release His power and move favorably on your behalf. You can join by logging on to our website at www.jlmcknightministries.org. There is no cost, it is not a denomination, I’m not starting another church; this is a divine assignment for my life, from God.

In addition to the conference and Prayer Army, you’ve also written a book and recorded a CD deal-ing with prayer as well. Are there testimonies about how the book and CD have impacted lives?

One of the books that I’ve written is entitled, “Prayer is a Must.” Along with the book, is a companion CD with recordings of seven diff erent prayers of victory that I pray with a background of worship music. The book and companion CD have been endorsed by TBN’s Jan and Paul Crouch; and we have received numer-ous testimonies from around the globe about the impact that the book has had on the lives of people who have received it, as well as the CD. Seminaries are now teaching from the book, hospital Intensive Care Units are playing the CD in the room of critically ill patients and thousands of people are writing to us about how their lives and their families are being aff ected by the power of prayer released through the book and CD.

Where can the book and CD be purchased?

The book and CD can be purchased at Eagle’s Nest Christian Bookstore in Orlando, at TBN’s Holy Land Experience in the bookstores, at my church, Sanctuary of Praise and of course on line at www.jlmcknightministries.org, or by calling the church at (407) 294-5487.

There is obviously an anointing and mantle for prayer on your life. Where would you say your inspi-ration and motivation for this vision stems from?

Absolutely, without a doubt from my mom and dad. My father is the Presiding Bishop of the Church of God by Faith, Inc. and he has always been my mentor and the most infl uential person in my life, still watching over my life today. I’ve learned what it means to literally walk by faith and trust God, through the life that I have seen my father and mother live before me. We weren’t rich growing up; but we didn’t know that we were poor either. My parents provided for us, kept us in church, and developed a strong discipline and focus for work. My dad has made deep deposits in my life and I would have to say, he has not only inspired, disciplined and discipled me; but also shaped me for my assignment. His devotion to God, his love for his family, his love for people, and his military back-ground are values that have helped me to become who I am.

What do you believe God is saying to the Body of Christ concerning prayer in this season?

PRAY and not faint!!!!

What can we expect in the future from the Prayer Is A Must Conference and PEACE Prayer Army?

Right now, I’m just obeying God and keeping my heart and mind open to whatever direction He takes me in.

Prayer is a Must!

Florida's Juneteenth Music Festival

There are a number of dates associated with the end of slavery in America. Some Floridians celebrate January 1, the date in 1863 when President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation

Proclamation. Others observe May 20th, the date in 1865 when Union General Edward M. McCook read the Emancipation Proclamation

on the steps of the Knott House in Tallahassee, Florida. Still others celebrate June 19, the date in 1865 when the last enslaved people received news of freedom in Galveston, Texas.

The 2010 Wells’Built Florida Juneteenth Music Festival is a weeklong celebration from June 12 to 19 that highlights Juneteenth and Black Music Month. The Festival ends with a Health Fair, sponsored by Representative Geraldine Thompson, and a concert to be held at Lake Eola on June 19. During the week, audiences are invited to the Juneteenth Gospel’s Best, the Juneteenth Jazz Session Jam, the Juneteenth Literary Review, a Spoken Word exhibition, an

Artist Review, and a Youth Leadership Summit. The final concert will spotlight the talents of Con Funk Shun and Lakeside.

Con Funk Shun and Lakeside will headline a full day of free activities at the Disney Amphitheatre at Lake Eola. Con Funk Shun scored a string of top ten hits on the Billboard black singles chart, including 1977's "Ffun" (#1), 1978's

"Shake and Dance with Me", 1979's "Chase Me", 1980s "Got to Be Enough”, and "Too Tight”. In 1980, Lakeside’s "Fantastic Voy-age" went to reach number one on the R&B charts. The tune remains the band's biggest hit. They followed this hit up with a remake of the Beatles' song, "I Want to Hold Your Hand," which made the R&B Top Ten again.

Activities on June 19th begin at 10:00 a.m. and end at 10:00 p.m. Local and regional artists will perform Gospel, jazz, hip hop and rhythm and blues throughout the day with elected of-ficials who will address the audience regarding the meaning of freedom.

All Festival events are free and open to the public. For infor-mation about vendor space, to volunteer, or perform during the Jazz

Music Festival, contact Derrick Gatlin at 407-245-7535 or visit

Action Has “No” Season (Part 3)Written By: Pastor Y.

When Goliath looked up and saw David, the bible says, he disdained him. In other words, he disregarded

him as nothing. Goliath said, “Am I a dog that you come to me with sticks?” The Philistine continued to talk trash to David. David replied, “You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin. But I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defiled. See, the only thing Goliath saw was the staff and the sling. He saw sticks, but didn’t see the stones that God would use as Weapons of Mass Destruction. What are you holding that God has anointed to be W.O.M.D. in your life? What are you holding that was intended to destroy the Goliaths in your life? People of God, we must identify our three weapons of war that sits in the arsenal waiting to be used as W.O.M.D. You already have something in your hand to destroy your Goliath. Whether your Goliath is debt, bad marriage, rebellious children, jealous people, backstabbing friends, lost job, house in foreclosure, repossessed car, or sin that has infiltrated your spirit, it’s time to reach inside of your bag and pull out your five smooth rocks and bring Goliath to his knees. At the end of the day, it’s all about bringing glory to God! David was furious because Goliath disre-spected His God by insinuating defeat. When will you get furious with your Goliath for paint-ing a picture of defeat in your life?

Apostle Dannie Williams, my Spiritual Father, has been preaching and teaching on the power of the Holy Ghost and what limits the Holy Ghost from working in our lives. He has been declaring and decreeing that many will fall by the wayside, and turn away from the church because 2010 will be a year of CONFRONTATION. If the only thing you have to go is what you see in the natural, you will not survive. If you go through 2010 without a relationship with the Holy Ghost, and the evidence of speaking in tongues, being able to commune with God and cry out to Him, even when you don’t know what to

pray, the enemy will sift you as wheat. This is not the time or the season to be lax in your relationship with God, your assignment to your spiritual leaders, or your commitment to a local church. Turbulent times will come, but when you are able to seek divine instruc-tions and directions, from the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords, and have someone you are accountable to, you will not be caught off guard nor will the enemy be able to overcome you. Those who are led by the Spirit of God are true sons & daughters of God.

I admonish you, take a little time and get refreshed, renewed, revived, and restored. Spend some quality time with God, seeking Him for instructions and allowing Him to lead and guide you into the manifestation of His promises for your life. It’s time to clear your plate of everything that you have not been instructed to take on. Jonah must be thrown overboard, if you want to really walk in the fullness of what God has for you. Put first things first! You can’t keep doing the same things that you’ve been doing for the last 5, 10 years and expect something different to happen. Just doing things because you can or because you just have a good heart will not do it in 2010. Only what you have been instructed by the Holy Ghost to do, will produce fruit in your life. Everything else will waste time and delay your destiny. Steal away and spend time listening. You’ve talked enough from January until today. Now it’s time to get in the presence of God and listen! Remember, you are already who you are trying to become, you simply need to humble yourself, master your gifts, follow instructions, and obey the principles of God. Principles always work!

May the year 2010 be the beginning of the best days, of the rest of your life! Don’t minimize your dream to fit your reality, change your reality and make it encompass your dream. You are more than a conqueror through Christ Jesus! The End
