Here we go, a new year ripe with new opportunities! A single determination and a new direction will spur you along the path of progress. Get healthier, finish a degree, read the Bible, and get organized are all resolves that

are begun with honest intentions. However, have you ever thought about a resolution to improve your marriage? The beauty of this resolve is that you do not need to have a bad marriage to work on strengthening it. So, how do you initiate this task? First, sit down and determine what area you would like to improve in your marriage. Second, decide what YOU can do to make your relationship more blissful. Third, apply the KISS principle: Keep It Simple Sweetheart. Just pick one area, and start working on it today. Here are some simple resolutions:Problem: I want more open communication.

Resolution: I will not allow cell phones, computers, or television to impede the beauty of one on one conversation. Problem: I would like more intimacy.

Resolution: I will prepare a special dinner, wash the dishes, and/or call just to say I love you. Go for it, start the year with a simple marriage resolution. Above all, resolve to put Christ first in your marriage.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. (Proverbs 3:5)GoT quesTions?

Make It CountWith Farris Long

A few years ago, one of my neighbors had a Jack Russell/Chihuahua-mix puppy that she

wanted to give to my family. I was initially a bit hesitant about taking it because, although I am indeed a dog

lover, I prefer big dogs. With a bit of persuasion from my wife and kids,

I gave in and we got the puppy. For someone who was determined to make this “my kids' dog,” I found myself

gaining a quick attachment to her. In fact I was the one who named her “BABY” because of the way she acted like a human child when I picked her up.

We have always told my oldest son Jaylen that he should go into the veterinary field because of his love for animals. Not only did he love them, but he was especially good with them. About a year or so ago, he brought home a Pomeranian. For the life of me I do not completely remember who gave her to him or why. I just know he brought her home. The family convened to determine what we would name her. We decided on “KIRA.” She was feisty, playful and downright headstrong at times. But I guess she fits her name. Her name in Russian means “leader” and in Japanese it means “sparkle or one who shines.” So with that, I found myself, the big dog lover, with two very little and energetic dogs.

Because of their mischievous personalities, we cannot leave them out when we are not at home, or at night because we are liable to come home and find our home absolutely destroyed. So to confine them, and yet allow them space to move around, we put them in the kids’ bathroom, and put up the child gate in front of it. One Sunday evening my whole family was gone. I stayed home to rest from a long week of being on stage singing. I put the dogs in the bathroom; but I did something different this time from the norm. I merely leaned the two edges of the gate against the sill of the door. I did not use the pressure lock to lock it in

place. In essence, with one push either of my dogs could have knocked it down and regained their freedom to roam the house; but they didn't. And it was that observation that gave the inspiration for the article you are reading now.

As I passed the bathroom, on the way to my office to write, I found myself wondering, “Why didn't the dogs just push their way out?” The answers that formed in my mind gave me some valuable life lessons to share with others. 1) Never let perceived obstacles steal your initiative. In times past, the gate had kept them on lock down; but this time, the open door to a bigger place was only one push away. Ask yourself this question, “how much freedom have you aborted in your life because you didn't take that one last push?” Initiative is the necessary catalyst for promotion, productivity, and communal change.

I believe that most, (yes I said most) people live far beneath the potential that God has invested in them. I believe that the richest place in the world is the graveyard because it is replete with aborted potential and opportunities not seized. Although some boundaries are necessary in life for our safety and protection, others are simply imposed as limitations. I am referring to the latter as I make my second point. Never let confinement become a comfort zone. So many people say they want to come out of poverty, but they have become so accustomed to the struggle of it, that they never push against the open gates to financial freedom. There are people who say they want out of bad relationships, but the comfort and security of being in a relationship (no matter how bad it may be) obscures the potential for something good that lies on the other side.

It is 2012. The year has just begun, and it is filled with so many possibilities. Will you be the one who stays behind the unlocked gate? Or will you push this year to see what the other side holds for you? What I am saying is that this year, your only limitations are the ones in your mind. Overcome those, and you open your world up to be bigger than you ever imagined. Moments of opportunity are made to be seized, so MAKE IT COUNT!!!!!

Kids face so many obstacles and distractions on a regular basis, but when our children walk outside

the door we hope and pray that they are safe. Bullying is a common occurrence, but taboo conversation in many minority communities. Until recently, technology has brought bullying to the forefront of conversation when parents and school administrators started noticing an increasing rate of physical abuse, cyber abuse (Facebook and Texting), and suicide. In our Dog-Eat-Dog society, the strong get stronger and the weak get walked on or over. As adults, we do what we need to do to survive; but, unfortunately we have taught this behavior to our kids. Kids as early as elementary have been divided into two categories: The bullies and those who get bullied.

Types of Bullying

1. Physical bullying - includes any physical contact that would hurt or injure a person like hitting,

kicking, punching, etc. Taking something that belongs to someone else and destroying it would also be considered a type of physical bullying. For example, if someone was walking down the street and someone came up to them and shoved them to the ground, that would be physical bullying. In elementary and middle schools, 30.5% of all bullying is physical.

2. Verbal bullying - is name-calling, making offensive remarks, or joking about a person's

religion, gender, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, or the way they look. For example, if there was a group of kids who made fun of another kid because he couldn't run as fast as everyone else, it would be an example of verbal bullying. 46.5% Of all bullying in schools is the verbal type. Verbal aggression is when a bully teases someone. It can also include a bully making verbal threats of violence or aggression against someone's

personal property.

3. Indirect bullying - includes spreading rumors or stories about someone, telling others

about something that was told to you in private, and excluding others from groups. An example would be, if you started a rumor that a boy in your class likes playing with dolls, and if the reason that you made up the story was because you thought it was funny. This would be indirect bullying. Indirect bullying accounts for 18.5% of all bullying.

4. Social alienation - is when a bully excludes someone from a group on purpose. It also

includes a bully spreading rumors, and also making fun of someone by pointing out their differences.

5. Intimidation - is when a bully threatens someone else and frightens that person enough to make

him or her do what the bully wants.

6. Cyber bullying - is done by sending messages, pictures, or information using electronic

media, computers (email & instant messages), or cell phones (text messaging & voicemail). For instance, if you send an embarrassing picture of someone in an email to a person knowing that it would make them feel uncomfortable would be an example of cyber bullying. According to a survey done in 2003, only 4% of bullying is listed as "other types" and this would include cyber bullying. Even though this number seems small, the growth of this type of bullying is going up fast because of the spread of technology around the world.

taX tiPs- 2012Ready, Set, Prepared

Freedom Financial instituion - dawn Higgs

wow...did you know Tax Season 2012 is fast approaching? are you Ready, are you Set? let’s make sure you are preparing properly for a great season. we at freedom financial institution want to share with you

some very important “tax tips” to make sure you have time to prepare. with proper planning and preparation, there will be no delays in filing your taxes, and no exclusions of any credits and/or deductions you may be eligible for in the new year.

#7: fRaud VS. inTeGRiTy. extreme situations can challenge or cloud your judgment or

sound decision making. during tax times there are millions of dollars out there ready to be claimed by taxpayers in the form of their “tax refund.” one common focus is the earned income Credit (eiC), a supplement given to families with low income. The eiC supplemental income has been abused over and over again with the issue of claiming dependents that are not legally yours. economic times are hard, but 5 to 10 years in prison i believe would be much harder. let us take a stand this season and every season to walk in inTeGRiTy.

#8: oBliGaTionS ThaT Can “wReCK” youR TaX Refund “CheCK”

1. uNPAiD ChilD SuPPort PAymeNtS 2. StuDeNt loAN DefAultS 3. uNPAiD irS DeBtS - i have received many inquiries from married couples and newly married couples about “should my spouse and I file jointly or separate” if he or she has an outstanding financial obligation with the IRS? Some individuals may be in child support arrears, or defaults in student loans, or they still owe back pay of a previous or current IRS financial obligation. In situations like these, the iRS will keep your tax refund to pay off those debts whether you’re married or not. in the case of being married see below:

TWO WAYS:

1. inJuRed SpouSe foRM 8379- one way to be considered an injured spouse, you must have

made and reported tax payments, such as federal income tax withheld from wages or estimated tax payments, or claimed a refundable tax credit, such as the earned income credit or additional child tax credit on the joint return, and not be legally obligated to pay the past-due amount your spouse owes on things like child support, defaulted student loans, etc. if you qualify, the iRS will not take your portion of the refund to satisfy the debt of your spouse.

2. innoCenT SpouSe foRM 8857- innocent spouse relief is an option for people who

are burdened with tax debt through the fault of their spouse. The iRS normally holds both spouses equally responsible for what is filed on a joint tax return. If there are taxes and penalties accessed to your joint tax return, both parties are fully responsible regardless of who made the mistake. Great thing is, if you were not aware of the mistake or your spouse knowingly committed tax fraud without your knowledge you can possibly be relieved of the debt by filing Form 8857-innocent Spouse Relief innocent. in order to qualify, you must meet a set of requirements determined by the iRS.

#9: foReCloSuReS & Sale of HOMES.1099-C and/or 1099-A Forms

our economy has affected all of us in one way or the other. Many homeowners have had to result in losing their homes to foreclosures or short-sales. if you experienced a foreclosure or short-sale of your home, you may receive in the mail a form entitled 1099-C- Cancellation of Debt and/or 1099- A (Acquisition or abandonment of Secured property).

1099-C- owing a debt to someone (mortgage lender, credit card companies, etc.), and they cancel or forgive the debt. in most cases you have to count this forgiven debt as income to pay taxes on the portion the lender has cancelled.

-There are exceptions: insolvency –form 982, debts discharge through bankruptcy, Re-course loans, and farm debts.

1099-a - This form is mostly for informational purposes, but still include it on your tax return (your tax professional will help you with this form.

-if you fall into this category of foreclosures or sale of homes, make sure you take the tax information along with you to file your tax return accurately. Each time there’s a debt cancelled or forgiven it’s reported to the iRS. Trust me, they know; the iRS sends letters to let you know they know.

w hat is cancer? Cancer is a group of many related diseases in which abnormal cells develop, divide uncontrollably and have the ability to infiltrate

and destroy normal body tissue. normally, cells grow and divide to produce more cells as they are needed to keep the body healthy. Sometimes, this orderly process goes wrong. new cells form when the body does not need them, and old cells do not die when they should. The extra cells form a mass of tissue called a growth or tumor. not all tumors are cancerous; tumors can be benign or malignant.

Benign tumors are not cancer. They can often be removed and, in most cases, they do not come back. Cells in benign tumors do not spread to other parts of the body. Most importantly, benign tumors are rarely a threat to life. Malignant tumors are cancer. Cells in malignant tumors are abnormal and divide without control or order. Cancer cells invade and destroy the tissue around them. They can also break away from a malignant tumor and enter the bloodstream or lymphatic system. The lymphatic system carries lymph and white blood cells through lymphatic vessels (thin tubes) to all the tissues of the body. By moving through the bloodstream or lymphatic system, cancer can spread from the primary (original) cancer site to form new tumors in other organs. The spread of cancer is called metastasis.

what causes cancer? Cancer is caused by changes in genes that normally control the growth and death of cells. There are many factors that increase the chance of developing cancer, including lifestyle, environment, and genetic risk factors. There are also certain viruses that increase the risk of developing cancer.

Certain lifestyle and environmental factors can change some normal genes into genes that allow the growth of cancer. Many gene changes that lead to cancer are the result of tobacco use, diet, obesity, lack of physical activity, exposure to ultraviolet (uV) radiation from the sun, or exposure to carcinogens (cancer-causing substances) in the workplace or in the environment. Viruses, such as the human papillomavirus (hpV), hepatitis B and C (hepB and hepC), and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), increase the risk of

some types of cancer. how does smoking relate to cancer? Tobacco smoke

contains thousands of chemical agents, including over 60 substances that are known to cause cancer. Smoking harms nearly every major organ of the body. Cigarette smoking is directly responsible for approximately 30 percent of all cancer deaths annually in the united States and 87 percent of lung cancer deaths. lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in both men and women. Smoking is also responsible for most cancers of the larynx, oral cavity and pharynx, esophagus, and bladder. in addition, it is a cause of kidney, pancreatic, cervical, and stomach cancers, as well as acute myeloid leukemia.

Cigarette smoking also causes chronic diseases such as emphysema, chronic bronchitis, cardiovascular disease, stroke, and cataracts. Smoking during pregnancy can increase the risk of stillbirth, low birth weight, Sudden infant death Syndrome (SidS), and other serious pregnancy complications. The health risks caused by cigarette smoking are not limited to smokers. exposure to secondhand smoke, or environmental tobacco smoke (ETS), significantly increases the risk of lung cancer and heart disease in nonsmokers, as well as several respiratory illnesses in young children. Quitting smoking greatly reduces a person's risk of developing the diseases mentioned, and can limit adverse health effects on the developing child.

Are there ways to prevent cancer? this risk of developing cancer can be reduced by:

• Not Using Tobacco Products- (The Most Consistent finding, over decades of Research, is The Strong association Between Tobacco use and Cancers of Many Sites. hundreds of Studies have Confirmed This. Lung Cancer Death Rates In The united States have Mirrored Smoking patterns, with increases in Smoking followed By dramatic increases in lung Cancer death Rates and, More Recently, decreases in Smoking followed By decreases in lung Cancer death Rates in Men.)

• Choosing Foods With Less Fat And Eating More Vegetables, fruits, and whole Grains (obesity is associated with Colon, Breast, endometrial, and possibly other Cancers)

• Avoiding Excessive Alcohol Drinking (Excessive alcohol Consumption is associated with increased Risk of oral, esophageal, Breast, and other Cancers)

• Exercising Regularly And Maintaining A Lean weight (physical inactivity is associated with increased Risk of Colon, Breast, and possibly other Cancers)

• Avoiding The Harmful Rays Of The Sun, Using

Good health is important to all of us. There is much information on issues related to diet and health.

Most of us are seeking to know what food is best for the body and what food is not.

Wherever we are in terms of our eating habits, we can always improve. In order to make transitions most of us will read, talk to knowledgeable practitioners, and experiment with the various methods of attaining optimal wellness.

Most of us read several articles and books about dietary issues and health concerns before we add our own credence to information. Changing for the betterment of yourself is wonderful and exciting when you consider the positive consequences.

It can be challenging for some of us to change old habits and practices; but it is surely not difficult. Every journey, no matter how long, starts with the first step.

When you mistreat your body temple with what you put into it, you will eventually pay a price. In many events, it can be an expensive price to recover.

I believe my experiences are valuable to those who are interested in learning how and what they can do independently to maintain and improve their health condition.

After many years of tests, experiments, and studies, I have found a life style that allows me a path to continual great health. It is hoped that my writings will assist you in your search for the same, and will allow you to avoid many of the pitfalls, and clarify contemporary health and dietary issues, in a comprehensive and succinct manner.

Remember in Genesis 1:29-30, “Behold I have given you every herb bearing seed which is upon the face of the earth and every tree in which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be meat and to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air and to everything that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat, and it was so.”

All life emanated spiritually. The omnipotent Father-God nourishes us directly on the spiritual plane and indirectly on the physical and mental planes. The mind is the great intercessor between the body and the spirit. Most people are not fully aware of how much power exists in the mind over the body. The mind influences

indirectly the state of health of the body, and thoughts create the form of the mind. Our thoughts are greatly influenced by the foods we eat. Our diet affects every aspect of our life (physical, mental and spiritual). It affects our emotions and even our sexual abilities.

The body is a perfectly designed machine. It is so precise and exact, that it could only be divinely created. Therefore, your body deserves the best. The best nourishment can be also obtained from organic fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and legumes.

Food has great influence on our social and business life. Many business deals are consummated over food. Males and females get to know each other over food. Families and others relax and wind down over food. Important celebrations such as weddings, picnics, religious affairs, and fund raising efforts have food as the major facet of the event. Even in scripture, food is a means of demonstrating fellowship and friendship. If we wish to show appreciation, affection, and hospitality, we should want to serve the best quality of foods.

The advertising media, food retailers and producers have become our teachers on what foods are good or bad. The makers of foods that are high in sugar, saturated fats, cholesterol, and salt deceive us with deceptive and suggestively false advertising.

The fast food chains are the prime culprits and huge profits are reaped at the public’s expense. We suffer as our bodies begin to degenerate, our immune system breaks down, and our mental alertness wanes. We become fat, and the aging process accelerates. Our energy levels get lower and lower.

Hippocrates, the father of Western medicine, said “let your food be your medicine and your medicine your food.” We must gain nourishment from the same source as animals and plants, namely, Mother Nature (our mother) and the earth (our home). For we are part of life’s process; a continuum with guarantees of harmony, order, and perfection. If we do not adhere to certain rules, then we’ll continue our downward spiral to self -destruction.

sugar is reported to be the number three killer in America. It

debilitates the body and the mind; white refined sugar that is. Sugar is actually a drug. It is turned white by a “bleaching” process, which involves using chemicals and in some cases, pork by-products. If you desire good health, and if you want control over yourself, don’t use it. Overuse of sugar will eventually cause diabetic and pre-diabetic conditions.

Diabetes is a disease where the pancreas ceases to function properly. The job of the pancreas is to produce insulin, which the body uses to transport glucose to all of the cells for energy. When too much sugar is consumed, the pancreas is overworked to produce enough insulin to metabolize the food consumed.

Since the turn of the century, diabetes has increased tremendously. Sugar is the main culprit. Sugar leeches calcium out of the body. Hypertension, heart problems, cancer, circulatory problems and several other health maladies can be attributed to sugar. Its sweetness is deceptive, but important. It can be related to a person longing for the sweetness in life after enduring much conflict and dissatisfaction.

Sugar is an empty carbohydrate. It has no food value. It is not like the sugar cane that contains several vitamins and minerals; instead, in the process of producing sugar, it is stripped of nutrients. Sugar wreaks havoc on the heart, spleen, blood, brain, pancreas, adrenals, liver, and other organs.

A diabetic condition only means that the body can’t take sugar anymore.

Sugar is put in most processed foods such as ketchup, relish, sodas, juices, iced tea, punch, desserts, breakfast cereals, canned vegetables, fruit cocktail, sweet potatoes, etc.

Sugar mollifies the immune system, and tends to make us weak and lethargic. It disturbs the stomach and digestive system. It robs the body of nutrients, mostly the water-soluble vitamins (B-complex and C). Vitamin C and B-Complex family is vital for managing stress,

controlling the nerves and the proper functioning of the brain.

It is no surprise to discover that the majority of people in mental institutions and jails are heavy sugar eaters, and most people with problems such as depression, schizophrenia, and/or paranoia, consume too much sugar. Most drug addicts and users have a sugar problem. Hyperactive and problem children can be brought back to normal by greatly reducing their sugar intake and giving them nervine herbs.

Sugar is the major culprit for causing stress, depression, and anxiety, and is precipitated by dietary toxins (bad food). Turbinado sugar and fructose are better than white refined sugar, but eating too much of them may produce some of the same problems. Pure honey is even better, but over consumption of it can result in health problems. Rice syrup and barley malt are examples of grain sweeteners.

To reverse the effects of sugar addiction or a diabetes condition, the first step is to clean the liver and the pancreas with a good herb. Then you need a blood purifier and a colon cleanser depending on the degree of constipation and health. Add a good vitamin-mineral supplement. Eliminate beef ,pork, and caffeine (soda, coffee, chocolate). Caffeine, like sugar, robs the body of nutrients, disturbs digestion, and pollutes the blood, the kidneys, the heart, the liver, and the lymphatic system.

Caffeine is the number 2 addiction in America. Caffeine is the largest cause of stomach cancer, and coffee is the main culprit of all caffeine products. Breaking the caffeine habit requires putting nutrients back into the body. In addition, take blood-purifying herbs to clean the liver and fortify the blood. Flesh-free meals full of legumes, whole grain, fresh fruits, and vegetables will nourish the body.

It’s time to have a heart-healthy lifestyle to protect such an amazing organ. The heart is faithful at pumping four quarts of blood throughout the body every

minute. The heart pumps blood through arteries, veins, and capillaries. The arteries transport the blood which contains oxygen and nutrients, (from food) to many of the cells of the body. if the blood is polluted it will weaken the heart and eventually put a burden on it. polluted blood is the cause of artery problems and it will adversely affect many of the body’s organs.

The amazing heart renews itself every year. Literally, billions of cells die each day and others are created. eating a heart healthy selection of foods will allow all cells to do their job as planned, otherwise there are heartfelt problems.

The heart is the center of feeling. it is related to our emotions and the reason for the importance of avoiding persistent tension and emotional imbalance. Stress is a contributor to heart problems. Arguing and conflict don’t help the heart either.

To have a good heart, it is vitally important to avoid consumption of meat, mostly dairy products, white flour, sugar, junk food, alcohol, drugs (legal and non-legal), and cigarettes. Meats are the number one cause of a high cholesterol level, which is a precursor to heart problems. The cholesterol level is one way to gauge the potential for a heart attack.

Cholesterol is found naturally in the body. in a healthy body, cholesterol is a clear mucous-like substance. The consumption of bad foods will cause this substance to thicken and change in color, resulting in a residue of waste. in other words, cholesterol is a measurement of waste that cannot nourish, enhance, or give life to the body. high cholesterol foods, primarily meats, are the cause of waste and high blood cholesterol levels. The result is not only the possibility of heart attacks, but also strokes, senility, and poor circulation. it is the reason for bypass operations. however, keeping the arteries clear of plaque by consuming heart-healthy foods can avoid the need for bypass operations and heart trouble.

The consumption of animal protein, especially beef and pork, is known to cause problems for the blood and heart. Too much animal protein increases the acid levels in the body and thickens the blood, putting strain on the arteries and the heart. Contrary to generally accepted beliefs, meat is not essential for health and strength. in fact, meat decreases endurance, strength, and your quality of health.

Animal flesh, especially beef and pork, contains uric acid, the urine from the animal. it is the waste from living tissues that is delivered by the blood to the kidneys, to the bladder and then eliminated.

When the animal is killed the uric acid is still in the flesh. it makes the meat toxic. it pollutes the blood and the heart. it causes arthritis, gout, kidney troubles, and other health problems. The only benefit of the uric acid (urine) is the flavor it provides to the meat.

In addition, the other possible health issues with flesh, (beef, pork, fish, fowl, etc) is the harmful bacteria that it contains. The putrefactive bacteria or germs enter the body of the animal from the colon after it is killed. These germs, if consumed, will pollute the blood and hence affect the heart especially in the case of pork and beef.

Cooking the flesh may not destroy the germs; however, if you stop eating flesh or greatly reduce your consumption and begin a series of blood cleansing herbs, the blood can be cleansed and the heart strengthened in a short period of time.

The body can heal itself. almost every disease and health problem can be treated. high cholesterol and heart problems are no different. Consumption of low cholesterol foods, such as whole grains, fresh vegetables, legumes, and fruits can actually lower cholesterol levels.

Salt deserves special attention as a contributor to heart problems. it pollutes the blood stream and irritates the stomach. Salt cannot be effectively digested and used by the body. Salt is addictive and health damaging. Salt can cause cancer. it disguises the taste of foods and trains the taste buds to anticipate its taste.

Most fast food restaurants over-salt the foods, and meats are cured with salt. Salt consists of sodium and chloride, minerals that are not readily useable by the body. There is a good amount of sodium in vegetables and fruits, useable and good for the body. Sea Salt, Celtic Salt, and Si Salt, are better alternatives to regular salt.

The circulatory system (blood) must be kept clean, and allowed to flow to avoid heart problems.

eat plenty of raw fruits and vegetables. Take herbs such as fresh garlic and cayenne pepper.

exercise done properly will help strengthen the heart muscle. walking is a great exercise that most individuals can do.

Diamond in the rough

24 www.GospelNow.Net

Dating back to antiquity, one of the earth’s finest natural materials, superlative in quality and character, has been valued in many cultures around the globe as an adorning gemstone. The

high-pressure, high-temperature conditions under which the gem is produced, is responsible for its amazing composition. Through the fire, the diamond emerges hard and strong, hence it’s Greek name, adamas, meaning unbreakable, unalterable. A similar conditioning takes place every 9 seconds in this country; a diamond emerges from the rough. The sad reality of this simile is that 26% of the murders committed in this country represent the women killed as a result of domestic violence; the diamonds that never emerge, but instead, are submerged into eternity, at the hands of a violent perpetrator. Domestic abuse or domestic violence is oftentimes a pattern of behavior in which physical violence or emotional coercion is used to gain and maintain control in a relationship. It can happen to anyone, rich or poor, religious or non-religious. Dr. Bonnie Sapp, playwright and author, paints the picture of this grim reality on the canvas of poetic prose and dramatic production, in the upcoming stage play, “Diamond in the Rough.” She shares with Gospel Now, the passion of her epic journey, and the influence behind the suspense-filled drama, “Diamond in the Rough,” coming to Central Florida on March 11, 2012 at 3PM, at the Osceola Performing Arts Center at 3141 North Orange Blossom Trail in Kissimmee.

You have a production on its way to Orlando that will grip the hearts of audience members, leaving them with more than an entertaining evening. Give us a synopsis of the production.

Simone, a devoted wife, mother, and gifted fledgling artist, is plagued by her circumstances. For the past 23 years she has been married to her

husband, a church Bishop, who is looking for his big break to serve as the leader of a large congregation. Simone serves her husband

and the church faithfully, even though she is continually abused by her husband.

How did the plot and storyline come about?

From my actual life. This is my personal story. It wasn’t until I wrote Passionate Pearls of Poetry, which contains the poem, Diamond in the Rough, which later inspired me to birth this production. I

have endured emotional, verbal, and physical abuse. Too many times in life, women

suffer silently in abusive relationships and I’m tired of just sitting by and not saying anything.is there a target audience, or a specific group that the production speaks to?Funny thing...domestic violence has no gender, no race, no age requirements or financial status. This production is designed to minister to the hearts of everyone. What disposition or mindset should audience members expect to walk away with?First and foremost, I want everyone to know that Jesus Christ can deliver you from any situation in life. I want people

to be informed, educated, and empowered concerning domestic

violence.it takes a great deal of courage

and boldness to produce something of this magnitude. What or who is the motivation behind your passion for this project? My Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. I am not

ashamed anymore. I’m more than a conqueror

through Christ Jesus. I am an over comer. With this kind of message, there must be opposition. What have you had to battle in order to keep your focus and bring this vision to fruition?

The fact that domestic violence is so “hush-hush” and people don’t want to talk about it, especially in the church. But God made a way of escape for every situation in our life.

along with this production, you also have a book and a non-profit organization that address some of what will be presented in the production. Tell us about them.

The book Passionate Pearls of Poetry was published in 2010. On pages 51 and 52, is the poem Diamond in the Rough. The play itself is actually derived from this poem. Now, the organization is called, Centre of Transformation. Our vision is to enable women that are going through desolate times, to provide them with shelter, as well as prepare them to go back into the community with trusting hearts. A major percentage of the proceeds from the play will be utilized in the establishment of this shelter.

How do you see your vision evolving from here?

This play will be more than just a production. We are here to celebrate the arts and carry this message city to city, state to state, informing people that God is able to deliver and set free. God is a panacea... He is a cure-all.

We are delighted that you made the choice to bring “diamond in the rough” to central Florida. are there plans to tour other cities around the state and country?

Absolutely.at the end of the day, what impression do you want to leave in the hearts of audience members?

Again, we celebrate all of the arts. We worship with our bodies as His instruments of prodigy. It’s never okay to inflict or subject anyone to domestic violence. Neither is it acceptable to be a victim of domestic violence. It is okay to seek out help when needed.

The age-old statement that causes hearts to go pitter-patter is up for reconsideration, and certainly re-examination. Coffee shop conversations and dining table

discussions are commonplace forums for entertaining the idea that love received from someone else really isn’t necessary. what degree of power and relevance could possibly exist in knowing where you stand as it relates to the heart of another? Contrary to this modern-day conundrum, the psychological composition of human beings necessitates the fulfillment of certain basic needs for the positive personal development and well-being of each of us. Maslow’s hierarchy defines this as the need for love and belongingness. after satisfaction of our basic biological and physiological needs, and the need for safety, we are impaired and often negatively impacted if the need to fit in, belong, associate, and relate is not met. achievement and potential maximization do not matter as much when the applause is all our own. Rightfully so, we give credence to the thought of being cherished and adored, as affirmation and validation are catalysts for higher achievement, mastery, and growth. So, the next time you or others present the argument, “you don’t need anyone to love you,” consider this…theology and psychology agree on this one. “it is not good that man should be

alone,” and it is amazing and wonderful when one finds a place to belong. Love iS powerfuL and revoLutionary, eSpeciaLLy when it iS reciprocated.

The year is moving along and before you know it, wedding season will be upon us. Now is the perfect time to dish on wedding makeup tips for the bride and the bridal party.

MakeUp

RETh

INkIN

G

First, I suggest being honest and practical with your expectations for how you would like to look on the day of your wedding. Just as you look for the perfect dress that’s “just right” on you, you have to look for the perfect makeup style that will compliment your facial features, skin tone and overall style. Searching the internet or magazines for celebrities or people who have similar skin tone, and features as you is the best thing to do. I also believe that it’s great for you to have ideas of what it is you want, but just make sure you can translate these thoughts and expectations to the stylist that is grooming you!

Here’s how to start. Begin with a good skin care regimen. Eight weeks prior to your wedding is a good time to start any facial treatments or new products. Getting your skin to a healthy state is the best thing you could ever do. If you don’t want to wear a lot of makeup in order to cover unsightly pimples or blemishes, 8 weeks is a good time to get things under control. Seek out a great esthetician or dermatologist who can get to the core of your skin issues to ensure that your skin is in its best shape for your wedding day.

Next, consider hiring a professional makeup artist; it makes a difference when a professional does your makeup as opposed to when a cousin who does her makeup really good does your makeup. Why? Because when a professional does your

makeup, they have more knowledge of products and techniques to give you the look you may be trying to achieve. Wedding makeup should be done more glamorous or outstanding than your everyday routine. A professional is able to apply makeup in a way so that you look like yourself, but also done up with more detail and class. So if details are important, then don’t trust your face to just anyone.

Many times I get asked about Bridal party makeup, and usually the question is should they all where the same colors of makeup? I say NO, they are already all wearing the same color dress. That’s just way too much of the same color scheme, and that just starts to look tacky. Individual style and freedom should be expressed somewhere in the wedding details, so bridesmaids having their own makeup style with class and sophistication is appropriate and acceptable.

Lastly, pricing and expectations are usually a big concern. I believe you should spare no expense on the things that are important to you for your wedding day. Searching for affordable services is a practical thing to do, but make sure you are getting the best quality for your money. When it comes to the details of your skin and makeup, consider how you want people to see you and how you want to remember looking on your wedding day.

On New Year’s Eve, President Obama signed the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), allowing indefinite detention to be codified into law . While President Obama

issued a signing statement saying he had “serious reservations” about the provisions, the statement only applies to how his administration would use it and would not affect how the law is interpreted by subsequent administrations .

Legalizing indefinite detention is troubling in light of the many claims of abuse and unlawful detention filed against the United States . Many individuals who are detained in immigration detention facilities do not know their rights and are often misinformed by immigration officers and facility workers . Whether you are a U .S . citizen, permanent resident or undocumented immigrant, you have the right to be treated with humanity, respect and dignity while in detention . Detainees do not forgo their human rights while in detention .

overvieW of immigration detentionImmigration detention in the United States has reached crisis

proportions . Over the last 15 years, the detention system more than quintupled in size, growing from less than 6,300 beds in 1996 to the current capacity of 33,400 beds . In 2010, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) held 363,000 immigrants in detention in over 250 facilities across the country . Among those locked up for months or years are survivors of torture, asylum seekers, victims of trafficking, families with small children, the elderly, individuals with serious medical and mental health conditions, and lawful permanent residents with longstanding family and community ties who are facing deportation because of old or minor crimes .

Scores of immigrants are detained without basic due process . Immigration detainees have no right to a lawyer, and an estimated 84% of detainees do not have attorneys, nor are immigration detainees guaranteed a prompt bond hearing to determine whether their detention is even justified in the first place . In some cases, immigrants convicted of minor crimes are subjected to mandatory detention during their immigration cases and categorically denied bond . The sad result is that thousands of immigrants are needlessly incarcerated, often for months or even years, without ever getting a day in court to determine whether they should even be detained in the first place .

my rights WhiLe in detentionAlthough an immigrant has no right to an attorney, an

immigrant can be represented by an attorney but will have to pay legal fees . There are many non-profit organizations that will represent immigrants in detention on a pro-bono (free) basis . Below are some basic rights that immigrants have while in detention:

1 . You may have the right to a judicial hearing (appear in front of

a judge) – do not waive your right to a judicial hearing . Some officers encourage you to sign and waive your right to a judicial hearing by claiming you have no relief . Choose to appear in front of an immigrant judge and ask for bond and any relief that may be available .

2 . If you are scheduled for a judicial hearing, ask the judge for a continuance in your case so you can hire an attorney . Also, ask the judge to set a bond hearing, so the immigration court can consider your release on a bond .

3 . Do not sign any paperwork given to you by an immigration officer if you do not understand the legal ramifications or language in the document . You always have the right to refuse to sign, and instead of signing your name, sign “refuse to sign .”

4 . The immigration officer should conduct an interview and create a “Record of Proceeding .” Please review this document carefully before signing . In the past, immigration officers would insert false statements and an immigrant’s failure to review the document still makes the document inadmissible in court .

5 . The immigration officer should serve you with a “Notice to Appear” that will allege the charges against you and the grounds that the government seeks removal/deportation .

6 . Write down the name of all of the immigration officers you speak with .

7 . You have the right to receive money from family or friends . Ask the immigration officer or facility worker for instructions on receiving money .

8. You have the right to receive “special meals” if you are vegetarian or have any other special diet .

9 . You have the right to call your consulate officer .10 . You have the right to visit with your attorney and family/friends

once the proper procedures are followed .If you would like to file a complaint of misconduct of abuse by

an immigration officer or detention facility, then call 1-800-323-8603, or file DETAINEE GRIEVANCE FORM (Form I-847) or send an email to DHSOIGHOTLINE@dhs .gov .
