Queensland Rail Travel is Australia’s
most comprehensive rail network with
five long distance services and two
tourist trains.
The perfect Outback Queensland experience begins on board the Spirit of the
Outback, a journey through ever-changing scenery and rugged terrain between
Brisbane and Longreach, with two weekly return services.
The Spirit of the Outback travels across an array of landscapes and the towns rich in
pioneering history. Pass through the heritage towns of Blackwater, Emerald and
Barcaldine, before arriving in the heart of the Queensland Outback, Longreach. From
Longreach, venture further into the outback and delve into the prehistoric age of the
dinosaurs at Winton or discover the vast sunburnt desert surrounding Birdsville.
A RailBus Coach Connection is available from Longreach to Winton.

Winton
Winton is the Dinosaur Capital of Australia, home of Waltzing
Matilda and Queensland’s Boulder Opal; abundant in nature,
culture and heritage.
• Tour the Australian Age of Dinosaurs Museum to see a real dinosaur laboratory in action and meet our prehistoric giants.
• Visit the Dinosaur Stampede at Lark Quarry Conservation Park , the world’s only recorded evidence of a dinosaur stampede.
• The Waltzing Matilda Centre is the only museum in the world dedicated to a song.
• The historic open-air Royal Theatre offers a rare opportunity to enjoy the movies the old-fashioned way – laid back in canvas seats under the stars.
• Bladensburg National Park offers stunning examples of the landscapes of Winton Shire, from sweeping mitchell grass downs to breath-taking gorges and jump-ups.
• Visit the Qantilda Museum which is dedicated to the pioneering history of Winton.
Destinations
Barcaldine
Filled with history, colour and a strong representation of
aboriginal culture. It is often referred to as the Garden City of
the West, due to its beautiful gardens and wide tree-lined
streets.
The town is well known for the Tree of Knowledge memorial,
located outside the railway station in Barcaldine, a historic
reminder of the 1891 Shearers Strike.
Emerald
Emerald is a large, modern country town that was established
in 1879 as a base for the building of the western railway. It is
the gateway to the Sapphire Gemfields.
Go exploring from Emerald to Carnarvon Gorge, with
spectacular gorge systems of towering white cliffs and lush
forests.
