  • The Internet.The World Wide Web.The Information Superhighway.
  • By flipping open a laptop and double clicking an icon, anyone with the desire can immediately and functionally step into any one of an infinite number of roles.
  • This technological perfect storm has become so universal that it can be difficult for most of us to wrap our brains around the fact that little more than a few years ago none of it was accessible to us.

3. History of the Internet Continued

  • Most of us can remember a time when DMV lines were the only way to get anything done.When having something sent to you in the mail meant Please allow 4-6 weeks for delivery.
  • A time when the phrase Google it would have been uttered by an infant learning to talk, while Look it up at the library is what adults did when they needed information.

4. Timeline of Events

  • On October 29 th , 1969 a whole worldwide universal upheaval began as a two character message, Lo sent from one computer to another.
    • That two character message was the culmination of a wild idea from J.C.R Licklider who was the first Director of Information Processing at the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA).In 1962,During his tenure at ARPA, Licklider conceptualized a vision of what he termed a Galactic Computer Network.This network would give anyone, anywhere, the ability to get their hands on all manner of information.

  • In 1972, Ray Tomlinson programmed what was in fact the very first email program.In developing the addressing format for this new type of correspondence, Ray used the @ symbol to denote the computing site to which the message was meant to go.That symbol remained the character used for emailing up to this very day.
