As you consider your own stewardship to Saint Stephens UCC, here are some ways to think about the dreaded question, “How much?” There can be some value in thinking about your contributions to church as another bill in your budget. Figure out what you can contribute each year, divide by 52, and that’s your weekly amount. This way it’s set and you know each Sunday what you’re going to put in that offering plate. This, of course, assumes that we all have budgets. I know Jamie and I have worked with budgets with varying degrees of success, but I can say that the best part of working with a budget is that you’re telling your money what to do, and you no longer feel as though your money is telling you what to do. When you figure out how much you actually spend on something, it might be shocking, but it can also be liberating. Historically, the amount someone contributes to the church is based on a percentage of your income. This is where the idea of a “tithe” comes in. A tithe is 10%. I know that 10% can be a lot. But knowing what percentage you contribute can also be helpful knowledge. For example, if you contribute $500 a year, and you make $25,000 a year, then you contribute 2% of your income. A tithe or 10% of $25,000 would be $2,500 a year. A tithe is not some magical number. It is the amount mentioned in scripture, but it can give us an idea of how much we actually contribute to our church as a percentage of our overall income. You can also think of other things that you spend money on, other things that have value to you. What is your monthly cell phone bill? Let’s say that it’s $150 a month. That’s $1,800 a year. Or 7% of a $25,000 annual income. The question could be: How valuable is what you gain from participating in the life and mission of Saint Stephens UCC as compared to your cell phone bill? Of course, you could say that a cell phone is no longer a luxury, and that you’d love to be paying less for cell phone service, but you need a cell phone (and if you use a flip phone instead of a smart phone, we all can absolutely save money on our cell phone bills), but nevertheless the question about value still remains. Everything requires money. How much do we value our church community and what our church does in the community as compared to our cell phones? For me, the bottom line is that we all contribute faithfully and regularly. By faithful, I mean contribute whatever amount you believe is faithful to your church community based upon your resources and what you get out of church life. By regular, I mean, give that faithful amount each and every week. Whatever amount is faithful to you, commit to making it a regular practice each and every week. Weekly is the most effective way for us to meet our obligations and to serve our community well. Take time to think and pray, as we continue our conversation on stewardship. Blessings, Kyle

WAIT ... HOW MUCH MONEY?

That’s always the question, isn’t it? Whether it’s the price per gallon at the gas station or a gallon of milk. How much? From the next school fundraiser or your alma mater looking for donations. How much? Bills come in the mail, how much this month? Doctor’s bills, how much this time? Even at church, how much money do I contribute each week?

As you consider your own stewardship to Saint Stephens UCC, here are some ways to think about the dreaded question, “How much?”

There can be some value in thinking about your contributions to church as another bill in your budget. Figure out what you can contribute each year, divide by 52, and that’s your weekly amount. This way it’s set and you know each Sunday what you’re going to put in that offering plate. Or what you’re going to have debited from your bank account through electronic giving, and you can put the “I gave electronically” card in the plate as it goes by.

FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF AN ORGANISTDo we need a new organ? Is it time for a new organ? The answer to both questions is: Yes!

After 30 years, this organ has served us well, but now we are having issues. The pedal board is warped, so we have had to remove three of the top pedals. The problem continues, so I now have hymnals under the next three pedals. It’s really embarassing when they continue to play when the music is done.

Then we also have electronic problems. The 16’ tab, which gives us the rich bass sound, is now cutting in and out and also creating a static sound. There are also other things that are going wrong or don’t work at all.

“Just call the repair man!” some may say. That used to be easy. Mr. Lenzi would come right up from Wausau. But now he has retired. Now we must call the Rodgers Company and have them send someone when they can, usually from considerable distance. There are not many people who can fix these old organs that are filled with boards filled with wires. The new organs have just a small computer chip inside.

The sounds from the new organs are the exact sound of the instruments (flute, violin, trumpet, etc.), not something the organ companies made to sound like the instrument.

The new organs have surround sound. No matter where you sit in the sanctuary, you hear the music the same.

A great opportunity is coming on November 13. Everyone in the congregation is invited to go and hear two Rodgers organs. You don’t even have to travel very far. We will be going to Mount Calvary and St. Therese churches in Rothschild. Both churches have just installed these new organs. The gentleman who will be the presenter is coming from Cincinnati, Ohio. He is a great organist, and I know you will enjoy this musical afternoon with food to follow.

Please come. We need everyone! It is time.

- Darlene Johnson

P.S. I have been encouraged to bring music along so you can hear me play and hear how these organs really sound live and in person. Even better yet, other musicians are also encouraged to bring their sheet music and try them out, as well!

Please sign up in the church office if you plan to attend, so we have an idea of the number of people. That way we can be sure there are enough handouts and plenty of food for all!

FIELD TRIP TO RESEARCH ORGANSThe Worship & Music Committee, at Darlene Johnson’s recommendation, is starting to research possible replacements for our organ. You may not be aware that our current organ is more than 30 years old and is having some significant issues such as pedals that do not function properly (or at all, or intermittently). Sadly, our organ has aged to the point of being obsolete and we realize that we will need to replace it.

This introduction is to preface our announcement that we are going on a field trip, and YOU are invited to come! In fact, anyone and everyone who appreciates music is invited. Our field trip is scheduled for Sunday, November 13, with the Time to Be Determined soon. We will gather here at church and then carpool together to visit and hear the organs at both St. Therese Catholic Church in Rothschild and Mount Calvary Lutheran Church in Rothschild. Need more incentive to come along? Pizza will be provided!

THANK YOU FOR THE FESTIVE DECOR!To whomever the anonymous soul is who decorated the outside of the church ... in our flower boxes and by the sign ... with pumpkins and gourds ... THANK YOU! It really gives the church and buildings a fun and festive, warm and welcoming, autumn harvest feel. What a wonderful surprise!

MAKE A DIFFERENCE DAYAbout 25 people gathered on Saturday, October 22, to “Make a Difference” for many, tackling six houses where they raked, cleaned gutters, and hauled away leaves. One house had over 100 bags of leaves!

A lot of work? Yes! But also a lot of fun! One of the organizers, Bailee Golisch, had such a great experience that, following the October 22 “Make a Difference Day”, she organized a bunch of her friends (including Bailey Iwen who was one of the original helpers on October 22), to do even more houses this past Friday, October 28!

Special thanks to the Kevin Golisch family, the Clint Golisch family, Cliff & Renee Williams, Katrina Depies and sons, Scott & Kelly Wallace, Jennifer Porath, Pam & Bailey Iwen and friends, Bill Mcintrye and Lydia, Chris & Heidi Stevenson, Kenyon & Bailee Golisch, and to anyone we did not mention here by name. And thanks, Kenyon and Bailee, for organizing such an awesome event!

CREATING A CAPITAL CAMPAIGN TEAM

Over the last few months, the Church Council has been working through the large capital needs of the church and building. There are four

major projects that need to be addressed: the sanctuary roof, the sanctuary interior, rewiring electrical in the sanctuary and fellowship hall, and a new organ.

Would YOU be interested in being a part of the Capital Campaign Team that will coordinate this project? The team will oversee the fundraising, construction, interior design, and overall communication with the congregation about the project. This will be the team responsible for selecting the design of the sanctuary and other spaces, as resources allow, so if you want input into how the sanctuary and other spaces will look, now is the time to get involved! There will need to be other people involved in making everything happen, of course, but first we need folks who have some experience in any of the above areas, and have the ability to commit some considerable time over the next year and a half.

The Team will be assembled by Council and will work on behalf of Council, and will be commissioned at our annual meeting in November. If you are interested or have any questions, please speak with Rev. Carnes, or Church Council President, Jennifer Porath. Thank you for your consideration in this important task for the future of our congregation.

Remember: SCRIP costs you NOTHING

FEED YOUR SPIRIT . . .Every Kind of Trouble

Vicki Kemper

“May the God and Parent of our Lord Jesus Christ be blessed! He is the compassionate Parent and God of all comfort. She’s the one who comforts us in all our trouble so that we can comfort other people who are in every kind of trouble. We offer the same comfort that we ourselves received from God.” - 2 Corinthians 1:3-4, Common English Bible

One of my most prized possessions is a nine-year-old thank you note from a man I do not know, written on the anniversary of the worst day in his life.

A year earlier I had met the man, his wife, and his mother- and sister-in-law in a hospital birthing room. Also in the room were the man’s stillborn first child and more raw pain than I had ever witnessed in my life.

I was the bumbling novice chaplain silently begging God to use me somehow. In the end, at the family’s request, I “baptized” Baby Anna as she turned blue in her mother’s arms.

I keep her father’s card for many reasons. It reminds me of my own brokenness 10 years ago, how I carried within me a deep well of grief even before I walked

through that door with a paper butterfly on it. It assures me that God was in the midst of all that unbearable pain, comforting us all. It tells me that life goes on, sometimes in surprising directions, and that even the most shattered of hearts can begin to heal.

I keep the card because God keeps sending me into pain-filled rooms, and because no matter who we are, what we do, or where we live, we inhabit the same beautiful but pain-saturated world.

The father’s note reminds me that to receive the fullness of God’s comfort, we must fully open ourselves to life’s pain. And that’s a reminder I need, whether I’m sitting with the parents of a shining 16-year-old boy who didn’t wake up one morning, listening to a young person struggling to own their sexuality, watching the dazed suffering of the children of Aleppo, or tending my own inner wounds.

May God comfort you today, that you might be a channel of comfort for others.

Prayer

Compassionate One, walk through all life’s troubles with me, comforting me as I go. Amen.

By Vicki Kemper

THANKSGIVING DAY DINNERIt is St Stephen’s turn to host the Community Thanksgiving Day Dinner this year. I will take the lead, but will need at least three others to join me in creating a team to facilitate this event.

We will need many others to volunteer the day before for prep work; on Thanksgiving Day to pack to-go meals, serve the meal, and clean up; and to donate food items to cut down the cost of preparing the meal.

There is a sign up sheet for workers and food donations on the kiosk in the Kuck Lounge. Please check it out and sign up where you can help.

Anyone interested in helping me as a part of the leadership team for the Thanksgiving Day Dinner, please call me at 715.536.5424 after 4:00 PM.

Thank you in advance for your support and God Bless!

CHRISTMAS ALREADY? DON’T FORGET SCRIP!So I’ve been noticing lately that whenever I am talking with my women friends, or even acquaintances, inevitably the topic of Christmas shopping is raised. Whether you are one of those people who already has most of your Christmas shopping done or whether you, like me, have yet to even make a list, don’t forget Scrip when you do start buying Christmas gifts ... and the food for holiday meals ... and stocking stuffers ... and that bottle of wine you bring for the hostess at a holiday party ... and all of those things I am totally not ready to think of yet!

We carry Scrip in stock for many stores and businesses, and we can order Scrip and have it ready for pick up within just a few days for many others. So make your list, check it twice, and then purchase Scrip before you make one more holiday purchase!

And don’t forget ... Scrip cards themselves make awesome Christmas gifts! They are just like gift certificates ... so purchase Scrip for Cosmo Theatre and a favorite restaurant for the couples on your list to get a night out, or to a favorite store in the mall for a teen or to Amazon.com for your favorite electronics junkie. What could be easier, right? - Tina

DINNER @ FIVE NEEDS DONATIONSAs many of you know, the Dinner @ Five ministry here at Saint Stephens has been growing since it began here on Monday nights approximately 18 months ago. Other ministries to the hungry and homeless and those who could just use a helping hand now and again have grown out of this ministry ... such as Under the Bridge and the Blessing Closet.

For many people, Dinner @ Five provides a hot, home-cooked meal that feeds both their body and their spirit, as they come for both the food and the fellowship. Many are regular attendees who rely on this weekly meal at Saint Stephens.

Since its inception, we at Saint Stephens haven’t had to contribute much to financially supporting Dinner @ Five. But now, the program could use a financial boost and we are hoping you can help. Whether it’s $5 or $50, if you can earmark a bit this month (or perhaps every month) to help with this ministry, it would be greatly appreciated. Simply mark an envelope with the words “Dinner @ Five donation” and drop it into the collection plate or take it to the church office. If you put your envelope number on your donation, it will appear on your contribution statement as a tax-deductible contribution.
