The weekend before last, Shelly Burnett and I attended the Wisconsin Conference Annual Meeting in Green Lake, WI. First, let me tell you we had a great time reconnecting with old friends, hearing great speakers, voting on the Conference budget, and getting recharged.

But most importantly, I am excited to introduce you to a new conference-wide initiative called “Shift!” This new initiative is designed to support local congregations in exploring new ways of being the church in the 21st Century.

I paraphrase our Conference Minister, Franz Rigert, when I express that many folks assume that the Christian faith will still be around in 50 years; we just don’t know what the Church of Jesus Christ will look like. But one thing for sure is that it is changing.

I have noticed a lot of anxiety around dwindling congregational membership in mainline churches; however, on the other hand, another trend is the rise of spirituality in folks who do not identify with a particular church. This may seem like a contradiction, but regardless it seems as if God is calling us to the places where our faith meets the needs of a changing world.

The central idea of the initiative “Shift” is about shifting our focus from buildings, internal budgets, and bodies in pews to touching people’s lives. The idea is to work collaboratively, supporting each other and those outside our own church walls, and making connections so that we can be resources for each other.

I think these are exciting times for the life of the church and feel blessed to be a part of it. We’ll chat about this more on Sunday.

See You in Church,

Missy

UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST

A ConcernSometime ago, through local media and personal interest, I became aware of a situation that occurred many years ago but immediately concerned me as a serious case of injustice.

During the era of the Vietnam War (1964-1973), the United States dropped more than 2 million tons of bombs on remote areas of Laos where enemy combatants (Viet Cong) were attempting to seek safe refuge. Of the 270 million cluster bombs dropped on Laos (a country that was not considered an enemy of the U.S.), approximately 80 million failed to detonate and most of those were on forests and farmland owned by peasant farmers. As a result, since the war ended, more than 20,000 Lao citizens (many of them children) have been killed or injured from bombs that failed to explode. None of these victims were the enemy of anybody.

During those times the U.S. spent $13.3 million per day (in 1970 dollars) conducting the air war over Laos. In 2015, the U.S. (recognizing at least some moral obligation to help with the problem) spent $12 million clearing these unexploded ordnances (UXOs) from the war. At this rate of expenditure, it is estimated that it will take several hundred years to completely eliminate the UXOs.

As citizens of the U.S. and as members of God’s caring community, we all should find this morally unacceptable and should be looking for ways, even at this late date, for our government to seriously address this moral obligation to the Laotian citizens. This, of course, would necessitate Congress to appropriate some serious dollars to complete a safe cleanup of the UXOs in the shortest amount of time. During a time of budget constraints, this can be a daunting task for Congress, but certainly not impossible. If the moral obligation can be recognized, then the will to appropriate necessary funding is more readily accomplished. Although I have had considerable personal contact with our Congressional representatives, no additional action has yet been taken by Congress.

Thankfully, there is someone who has recognized the injustice and has taken direct action. Jim Harris is a retired elementary school principal in Weston. Because of a significant number of Hmong students at those schools, he determined that he needed to further educate himself about Laos and the Hmong culture and traveled to the country in 2000. His attention was drawn to the amount of unexploded ordnance that still

remained, especially in the peasant farmland areas. He educated himself in the methods of safe removal of UXOs and eventually traveled to Laos, at his own expense, located some Laotian men to work with him, and initiated the process of safe bomb removal. He has continued to travel there for 3-4 months every year since to continue their removal, mostly on rural farmland owned by the poorest of the people. To defray some of his expenses, he has started an organization, We Help War Victims, a registered 501(c)3 public charity. He also sells Laotian blend coffee to individuals, organizations, and churches.

I personally have been, and will continue to be, involved primarily through communication (personal letters and phone calls) with the President and our Congressional Representatives. I have found this a very slow and arduous process and would welcome the assistance of Church members in a couple of ways if this continuing injustice touches you as it has me:

1. Join me in contacting the President and our Congressional representatives to encourage meaningful action and appropriate funding to promptly deal with this injustice to the citizens of Laos. The simple premise of contact might be, “We somehow found the funding to manufacture, deliver, and drop the bombs during the Vietnam War ... We should be able to find the funding to clean up the mess we left.” I have all of the mailing addresses and phone numbers.

2. I am willing to establish a system to sell Laotian coffee at the Church (probably on an honor system) to help Jim Harris in his efforts. All of the coffee served in the Kuck lounge between church services since the beginning of the year has been a Laotian blend.

It is a legitimate question to ask, with the thousands of injustices in this world (and there are thousands!) why has this one touched me. The answer is ... I DON’T KNOW. The work of the Holy Spirit is certainly part of this answer.

This has been a long article ... and I apologize for this. I very much appreciate the Church Council allowing me this opportunity ... and I will be most interested in hearing your thoughts.

CHILD WATER SAFETY ... Be Vigilant ... ALWAYS!It’s summertime! We’re by the water ... lakes, rivers, water parks, backyard pools. It wouldn’t be summer in Wisconsin without fun water time. BUT if children are in or near the water, give them your undivided attention! AND if you even HAVE a pool or are near water, be vigilant. Because ...

• In 2006, drowning claimed the lives of approximately 1,100 children younger than 20 years of age. Toddlers and teenage boys are at greatest risk.

• 350 children under the age of five drown in pools each year nationwide.• Most child drownings occur in June, July and August; and most in backyard pools.• Another 2,600 children are treated in hospital emergency rooms each year for near-drowning incidents.

Some of these submersion accidents result in permanent brain damage.• Most child drownings happened in familiar surroundings (like the family’s pool) and in the majority of cases,

children were last seen in the house, yard, porch or patio, and not expected to be in the pool, yet they were found in the water.

• Pool submersions involving children happen quickly and silently. Child drowning is a silent death. There is no splashing to alert anyone that the child is in trouble. In most cases, the child had been missing from sight for less than five minutes. A child can drown in the time it takes to answer a phone.

For more information about pool and water safety and steps you can take to reduce the danger of child drowning, go to:http://www.momsteam.com/sports/swimming/safety/grim-statistics-on-child-drowningsFor a lot more tips on keeping your child safe in and around water on Wisconsin lakes and rivers, go to:http://cmnwi.org/MinistryHealth/Services/EmergencyServices/InjuryPrevention/WaterSafety.nws

UPCOMING EVENTS

There are times when you need your pastor to listen and to be present for an illness, death, or a personal crisis. As you may have read recently in The Interpreter, we have a new phone number to call for those pastoral emergencies, which you can find in a box on page 11 of this issue. Your pastors are always ready and eager to care for the congregation with love and concern in these times.

However, we as a people of faith are each called to care for one another, as well. In John 15:12, Jesus says,

“This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.” With that in mind, I am pleased to let you know that we are developing something new here at Saint Stephens. It is called The Congregational Care Team. This team hopes to provide care and support to families and individuals in a personal and compassionate way and to provide an opportunity to sense God’s presence among us.

That care could mean delivering a meal to new parents or providing meals for those diagnosed with a new illness, making visits wherever they might be needed, writing notes of encouragement, or sending cards to folks that are celebrating an anniversary or a birthday. Or perhaps you have thoughts on other ways this team can make a difference in someone’s life?

Or are you or someone you know dealing with a

sudden or chronic illness or loss in your family? Perhaps you are feeling disconnected because of the inability to attend church. Are you giving care to a loved one and needing an extra pair of hands for an errand or two? Or are you someone who feels the call to help out in any of these areas?

Last year Kathy Hass, among several other faith leaders here at Saint Stephens, and with your pastors, attended a Leadership Institute at the Church of the Resurrection in Kansas City. From that Leadership Institute came a call to Kathy to be instrumental in forming a Congregational Care Ministry here at Saint Stephens. Kathy will be our new Congregational Care Coordinator and can help you access the support or care you need or set you up to help in any of these areas of care if you feel that you can assist others in need.

Please call Kathy Hass at 715-536-1307 or email her at [email protected]. If you have any other questions regarding this exciting and new ministry, please feel free to contact me at the church office and I would be happy to share more of this vision with you.

God Bless!

FEED YOUR SPIRIT . . .What You Can Learn From a Cheater

“And his master commended the dishonest manager because he had acted shrewdly; for the children of this age are more shrewd in dealing with their own generation than are the children of light.” - Luke 16: 8

A dishonest steward got word that his rich boss was onto him. Instead of owning up, the steward used his final days on the job to cut deals with the creditors so that someone would help him out when he got canned. (Check out the whole parable at Luke 16: 1 – 9.)

Jesus says we can learn from this guy. Really?

I have a tendency -- true confessions here -- toward what folk wisdom calls being “penny wise and pound foolish,” which means you hunt bargains while in other

ways, ways to which you are often blind, you actually waste money foolishly. Just the other day while shopping a bargain I scored a $53 parking ticket. Made the whole venture kind of silly. Or you get a really great deal on a case of wine until you taste it and know who got the deal, and it wasn’t you. The penny-pinching thing can be a kind of addiction.

So the dishonest steward was, at the very least, not a penny pincher. He was actually quite extravagant in his use of money (though it happened to be someone else’s money).

For him, money was not an end in itself. It was an instrument. A means to an end. We can learn from that.

By being too tight with a dollar, we can miss the divine intent. By falling into the trap of treating money as an end in itself, we miss things that are far more precious. Like the chance to be generous for a good cause, or the joy of getting a beautiful gift for a loved one, or hosting a wonderful, and yes extravagant, dinner for dear friends.

Don’t be so uptight about money that you miss out on life.

Prayer

Help me, Holy One, not to be a damn fool but to be a fool for Christ. Amen.

By Tony Robinson

NEVER leave a pet or child unattended in a hot car! Not even for just a few minutes. No matter the circumstance. Not even if the child is sleeping and you don’t want to wake them. Not even if the windows are down. More than 600 children have died that way in the U.S. since 1990. Think it can’t happen to you? Think again.
