Feelings and Parts of Speech● Example: Frustrate

– Verb: This problem really frustrates me.

– Noun: Frustration is an unpleasant feeling.

– Adjective (passive): I feel frustrated.

– Adjective (active) He is frustrating.

Interpretation Questions● How do you think Alice felt when she

saw that Mr. Merrick didn't look very happy to see her? What conclusion might Alice jump to?

● Why doesn’t Ms. Merrick seem happy to see Alice?– List as many explanations as you can

think of– Include one good and one bad reason

● Now, rank your ideas– Which one is most likely? Least

likely?● Write your best idea in a complete

sentence– Be prepared to share with the class

Fake Invitations

● What is a “Polite Invitation”?● Do people in China make Polite

invitations?● With your group, make a list of ways

you can tell the difference– Ex: “A real invitation _____.” “An
