The Fulbright Prize was established to honor the largest and most significant educational exchange program in history, as well as the career and spirit of its creator, the late Senator J. William Fulbright. The Prize recognizes and rewards outstanding contributions toward bringing peoples, cultures, or nations to greater understanding of others. The Fulbright Prize was initially supported by a generous grant from the Coca-Cola Foundation. The Prize is now supported by the J. William Fulbright Prize Endowment, a fund created with a bequest from the late John B. Hurford, a former Fulbright Association officer and director. The Prize event is supported by sponsorships and contributions from Fulbright alumni and friends around the world.

The J. William Fulbright Prize for International Understanding inaugural winner was former South African President Nelson Mandela (1993). Four recipients of the Fulbright Prize, Nelson Mandela, Jimmy Carter, Kofi Annan, and Martti Ahtisaari, were later named Nobel Peace Prize laureates. The 2008 Fulbright Prize laureate, Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984.

About the Fulbright Association

The Fulbright Association, the official organization for U.S. alumni of the Fulbright global exchange program, was founded in 1977 with the support of Senator J. William Fulbright. The Association is an independent non-profit that represents more than 140,000 American alumni and serves its membership through a network of 53 chapters in 38 states.

The mission of the Fulbright Association is to advocate for the Fulbright Program and promote international education. The Association helps members of Congress understand the value and impact of the program through Advocacy Days on Capitol Hill and grassroots activity across the country.

The Fulbright Association magnifies the impact of the Fulbright Program by offering exceptional international education programs. Those include an annual conference that engages the Fulbright community, TEDxFulbright featuring dynamic alumni speakers, the Fulbright Prize, Insight and Service Travel Programs, and over 230 events offered by chapters nationwide.

Members share the Fulbright experience, participate in community outreach, welcome international visitors, and enjoy a vibrant professional network of Fulbright alumni, friends of international education, and 250 institutions. One does not have to be a Fulbright alumnus to be a member. More information about the Association and membership at www.fulbright.org.

Who are Fulbright Alumni? Fulbright alumni work in every professional field around the world, serving as teachers, ambassadors, CEOs, scientists, entrepreneurs, artists, musicians, playwrights, poets, physicians, university leaders, among other positions. The program has produced 380,000 alumni worldwide, including 59 Nobel Laureates, 37 current or former heads of state, 82 Pulitzer Prize winners, 70 MacArthur Foundation Fellows, and 16 Presidential Medal of Freedom recipients.
