Weekly Halacha - Parshas Matos-Masei R’ Mordechai Torczyner – [email protected]
What rules apply to the meals of Shabbat, when it coincides with Tishah b'Av?
We eat normally for most of this Shabbat; all of the Shabbat meals may include meat, wine and delicacies. One may even eat extra, knowing this will mitigate the fast, but one may not declare this intention overtly; statements of preparation for after Shabbat are prohibited.
Seudah shlishit should only be eaten with people who would normally be present for a Shabbat meal, and the mood of seudah shlishit should be somber. All eating must stop before sunset, even though Shabbat continues until its normal time.
Additional notes: The traditional seudah hamafseket meal eaten before Tishah
b'Av is not eaten this year. After Shabbat has ended, one says the phrase "Baruch
hamavdil bein kodesh l’chol / Blessed is the One who distinguishes between the sacred and the mundane." One then removes leather shoes and Shabbat finery. Some wait to do this until after Barchu at the start of maariv.

PARSHAS QUESTIONS MATOS-MASEI BY: THE RAV
First Aliyah: Why does the Torah give a husband the power to annul his wife’s vows? Second Aliyah: (31:17) Why did the children have to be killed? Third Aliyah: (32:19) How could the Reuven and Gad tribes presumptuously say, “Our inheritance comes to us on the Transjordan”? Fourth Aliyah: (32:23) After having clarified the terms of the deal, why did Moshe have to then explicate that if they wouldn’t fulfill the terms, the deal was off? Fifth Aliyah: (33:55) What’s the difference between “pins in your eyes” and “thorns in your sides”? Sixth Aliyah: (35:6) Why were the Arei Miklat (Cities of Refuge) incorporated into the Levite cities? Seventh Aliyah: (35:14) Why were fully half of the Arei Miklat on the Transjordan – isn’t that disproportionate to the population there?

ELEVATORS AT BAYT The work on the Service Elevator is now complete. We have started working on replacing the Passenger Elevator. As a result there is no elevator access to the 3rd floor until the work is complete. A women’s section has been set up on the 2nd floor in the Main Shul. Until the work is complete, please use the Service Elevator for access to the 2nd floor.
