Tech is back in Ottawa.

There is nowhere more appropriate to make this statement than right here in Kanata North. Everywhere we look we see signs of success. Signs of construction on new buildings for Sanmina, Ciena and others. Signs for Career Fairs and Open Houses, and full parking lots. Signs of growth.

It’s time to celebrate this growth, and time to make sure we embrace it and stay on top of it.

This growth has brought more attention to real estate in Kanata North, and more opportunities for local companies to grow and expand their businesses and innovations. Back by popular demand this month are the Wednesday Lunch Parties at the Community Hub. The Community Hub is on Legget Drive across from QNX, and is a gathering spot for the business community. On Wednesdays, there will be a variety of food trucks onsite over the lunch period, along with live music and even a competitive game of giant checkers. Also starting this month will be Yoga at the Hub. Two great opportunities to leave the office, refuel and recharge.

We hope you enjoy this issue.

As always, please never hesitate to reach out if we can be of assistance to you, and your business.

Sincerely,

Jenna SuddsExecutive Director, Kanata North BIA

FROM INNOVATION TO PRODUCTION: MAJOR PROGRESS FOR LOCAL HIGH-TECH COMPANY GaN SYSTEMS, RAISING $20 MILLION IN SERIES C FINANCINGWritten by Amie Kandalaft

Kanata North’s GaN Systems is the leading developer of gallium nitride power switching semiconductors. Its unique and innovative Canadian-made technology is set to disrupt the $15 billion global power transistor market. GaN announced on May 5th, 2015 that it has raised US $20 million in venture capital financing. This Series C financing will support sales and marketing initia-tives and increase product delivery for the company’s rapidly growing interna-tional customer base.

GaN Systems has developed the most comprehensive range of gallium nitride power switching transistors for a wide variety of markets. The compa-ny’s Island Technology® results in devices that are smaller and more efficient than traditional silicon design approaches. Its products enable previ-ously unseen switching efficiencies that lead to more sustainable energy use and increased power efficiency, while reducing the costs and environ-mental impacts of some of the world’s fastest growing industries.

GaN Systems has already delivered to over 300 customers, including consumer electronics, electric vehi-cles, renewable energy and Internet service providers. Their power elec-tronics transistors can be used for a multitude of consumer, enterprise, industrial and transportation applica-tions, from more efficient data centres and solar inverters to thinner TVs, longer range electric vehicles, while eliminating the need for cumbersome “power bricks” on an assortment of

electronic devices including smart-phones and laptops. With conventional technology it is estimated that at each stage of conversion, up to 10% of power is lost as heat through ineffi-cient electronics. The products that GaN Systems has developed have the potential to eliminate 50-90% of these losses, while significantly reducing the size and weight of power modules, as well as enabling entirely new prod-ucts that could only be achieved with its super-high speed switches. GaN Systems products provide compel-ling value to their customers anywhere efficiency, size, weight, cost and performance are important.

This funding has local significance as it represents the first serious venture capitalist funding of a semiconductor company in the area in many years. It also demonstrates how the Ottawa Valley infrastructure and Canadian capital industry maintain the depth of resources to produce a global high-tech leader.

HOW LONG HAS GaN SYSTEMS BEEN IN KANATA NORTH?We have been in Kanata North since 2007, originally located at 300 March Road. before relocating in 2014 to 1145 Innovation Drive.

WHY IS KANATA NORTH A GREAT PLACE FOR GaN SYSTEMS?We feel that Kanata North is the best place for our engineers and staff because the concentration of high-tech activity greatly enhances communications and supply. We also feel that Kanata North offers many other amenities such as bike/walking paths and recreation centers. It offers fine and casual dining for local and out of town visitors for business meetings, as well as a variety of lodging options that can accommodate all budgets.

INNER REVOLUTION: INSPIRING WELLNESSA new yoga studio that has opened up in Kanata North, Inner Revolution focuses on the connections between the mind, body and spirit, and how these connections create balance and inspire wellness.

Offering a variety of yoga classes from yoga bootcamp to pilates, the studio has a staff of 19 which includes a Holistic Nutritionist specializing in digestive health, brain health and performance. A perfect place to unwind, restore and reenergize, the studio can guide you through nutrition and wellness coaching.

Founder and Yogipreneur Brenna Bellhouse, developed a love for movement at a very young age, and began prac-ticing yoga regularly in University.

She went on to develop expertise in personal training, yoga and spinning instruction, and later became a professor at Algonquin College where she teaches leadership, psychology and fitness.

This unique blend of psychological and physical knowl-edge qualifies Brenna to guide both groups and individuals through several categories of self-improvement.

She opened her first yoga studio five years ago in Dunrobin, Ontario. After experiencing the positive healing benefits of yoga, she began hosting night classes in her home studio. The popularity and success of the classes, enabled Brenna to launch her new business Inner Revolution.

“After years of creating balance and inspiring wellness, my vision has turned into reality,” said Brenna.

Inner Revolution’s Classes are designed to accommodate both beginners and experienced yogis, and will soon include workshops and special training programs.

A corporate yoga program is also available for companies looking to bring yoga classes in-house for their employees.

Starting in June, Inner Revolution will be offering Yoga in the Park every Tuesday at 12:10–12:50pm. Watch for the small signs in and around the technology park that will list the dates and times of the classes.

The studio is located at 700 March Road, Suite 200 and is offering a promotion of Yoga for 30 days for only $35. Check their website for more details: www.innerrevolution.ca.

Q&A CORNER

SCOTT BRADLEY: VP CORPORATE AFFAIRS, HUAWEI CANADA

Scott has helped lead Huawei’s emer-gence as a key contributor to Canada’s telecommunications industry. He manages all external-facing functions for the organization, including brand development, public affairs, marketing communications and government rela-tions. He is also the lead spokesperson for the company in Canada.

Q: HOW LONG HAVE YOU WORKED AT HUAWEI AND WHAT DOES A TYPICAL DAY ENTAIL?

I joined Huawei in June 2011, so I am celebrating four years with the company this month. No day is the same at Huawei Canada, which is probably why I am still having fun four years in. We have customers and stake-holders across Canada, and of course also keep in touch regularly with our headquarters in Shenzhen, China. If I am in the office in Kanata, a typical day might involve an early morning response to emails from colleagues back in Shenzhen from home.

Usually, we will have a few calls and meetings through the course of the day, and often take advantage of the telepresence room to speak with our colleagues in Markham. It’s an effec-tive way to meet face to face, without having to travel. If we are planning a trip to China, or are working on a global project, we will often have calls later in the evening. It’s a 12 hour time difference, so 9pm/9am calls work best. It’s a good time to get things done, as family activities are usually wrapped up, and you can have your colleagues in China moving projects forward while you sleep. You learn to maximize a true 24 hour workday.

Q: CAN YOU SHARE WITH US A KEY COMPONENT TO HUAWEI’S SUCCESS?

One thing many people don’t recog-nize is that Huawei, unlike many Chinese companies, is not a state-owned Enterprise. Rather, Huawei is privately held by employees. Roughly 2/3 of all employees own shares in the company, and Huawei pays an annual dividend. With the company continuing to grow and generate profits, it continues to be a key moti-vator for employees.

Q: WHAT STRATEGIC APPROACH DID HUAWEI USE TO SUCCESSFULLY EXPAND ITS BUSINESS IN CANADA?

Our focus starts with a commitment to our customers. We’ve been able to build valued partnerships with some of the best telecom companies in the world here in Canada, and we continue to work to develop new inno-vations and technologies so that our customers, and their customers, can maintain Canada’s telecom leader-ship—particularly in the deployment of wireless technologies like LTE, TD-LTE, and eventually 5G. We’ve also taken things step by step here in Canada. We recognize we’ve had to manage some challenges south of the border, and we’ve been committed to building a Canadian operation that reflects the expectations of our customers and other stakeholders. This includes making major invest-ments in Canadian-based R&D, and supporting Canada’s ICT Ecosystem with programs like Seeds for the Future.

Q: WHAT IS THE SEEDS FOR THE FUTURE WORK EXPERIENCE PROGRAM?

Seeds for the Future is a program Huawei initially established in devel-oping markets to build skills capacity and awareness with science and technology students. This program has been hugely successful in south Asia and Africa introducing many students to career opportunities in ICT and telecommunications for the first time. Over the past two years, we’ve expanded the program to include countries like Canada, where our telecommunications legacy is well established, and where we have a deep pool of ICT talent.

Page 9: The Kanata Networker June 2015

THE KANATA NETWORKER 7

Our approach with Canadian students is instead to make them aware not only of Huawei, but of the global opportunities and growth that exists in telecommunications and ICT in markets around the world. Hopefully, this perspective will help these Cana-dian Engineering students as they embark on their careers, and perhaps one or two of them might come knocking on our doors at Huawei when they graduate and are ready to enter the workforce.

Q: ARE THERE ANY FUTURE PLANS FOR HUAWEI THAT WE SHOULD BE AWARE OF?

The next big thing we are working on is the launch of our handsets and smartphones in Canada. While we sell smartphones already, we’ve only just started to scratch the surface. Depending on the quarter, we are the third or fourth largest smartphone manufacturer in the world, behind only Samsung and Apple. We make some fantastic devices, and are excited about introducing them to Cana-dian consumers over the next 12–18 months.

Q: WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT YOUR LOCATION IN KANATA?

Many of our employees live in Kanata, so the ability to live and work in the community is a huge attraction. I live closer to downtown, so the morning commute is easy. It’s also easy to turn off the laptop and get over to the Canadian Tire Centre on game nights! Go Sens Go!

MARTELLO TECHNOLOGIES GRABS NO. 1 SPOT ON OBJ’S LIST OF OTTAWA’S FASTEST GROWING COMPANIES WITH OVER 600% GROWTH IN THREE SHORT YEARS!Martello Technologies is a private company that was founded in 2009. Headquartered in Kanata North on March Road, the company has enjoyed tremendous growth and success, hitting the top spot as Ottawa’s fastest growing company. The Company develops fault-, performance- and configuration-management solutions for unified communications (UC) systems, with a special-ization in Mitel UC solutions. We contacted them to ask them about their success.

Q: WHAT DOES THE TITLE OF #1 FASTEST GROWING COMPANY MEAN TO MARTELLO TECHNOLOGIES?

It’s significant in two ways: for Martello, it validates our business model and opportunity. Our opportunity is in the shift towards cloud-hosted UC and the need for solutions to manage performance, and our business model centers around the value of a strategic partner like Mitel that is experiencing significant growth.

More broadly, in the context of recent positive develop-ments in the local tech community like Shopify’s IPO, it’s a nod to how start-ups like Martello are competing globally and contributing economically. Technology SMEs are an engine of skilled job growth in this region, and we’re glad that the Fastest Growing Companies recognition can shine a light on that.

Q: CAN YOU TELL US WHAT WAS INSTRUMENTAL IN CONTRIBUTING TO THE GROWTH OF THE COMPANY?

To some extent, we were in the right place at the right time – but to be successful, we needed to do the right things. We recognized that the industry was shifting towards cloud-

hosted voice solutions, which are more complex in terms of management. We positioned our software-as-a-service to help service providers deliver reliable performance more easily, reducing their churn and allowing them to be more competitive.

Of course, Mitel’s growth has also positively impacted us, expanding our addressable market and giving us access to the customer feedback that has helped us improve the product.

Q: ARE THERE ANY NEW ACQUISITIONS IN THE FORESEEABLE FUTURE?

We acquired Netvitesse, a French software company last year. That allowed us to consolidate complementary tech-nology and knowledge to enhance our offering to Mitel’s customers.

Recognizing the significant opportunity that exists in network and performance management within Mitel’s ecosystem, we have an aggressive business plan. That may include future acquisitions to rapidly layer on new capabil-ities to address this market.

Q: YOUR PARTNERSHIP WITH MITEL SEEMS TO BE WORKING QUITE WELL. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS A KEY INGREDIENT TO BUILDING A LASTING PARTNERSHIP?

We’ve leveraged our close relationship to Mitel to better understand their customers over the last six years: what their pain points are and how we can help. As Mitel grows through acquisitions and their expertise in cloud-hosted solutions, we’ve committed to continually evolving our

product to ensure the software always delivers value. We’ve invested time and effort to develop knowledge through working closely with these customers and with Mitel.

Q: WHAT ARE SOME THE UNIQUE FEATURES OF YOUR MARWATCH 5.0 PLATFORM?

Our new platform is designed to address the shift towards cloud-hosted UC solutions managed by service providers. We implemented a multi-tenant structure to the software that allows service providers, resellers and end customers to each access the types of data and features they need most. We’ve also expanded testing tools, helping MarWatch users to not only detect problems but address them more easily and quickly.

Q: ANY OTHER PROJECTS ON THE HORIZON WE SHOULD BE AWARE OF?

We’ll add new device support and capabilities to MarWatch, addressing Mitel’s growing customer base. Very soon resellers of the MiVoice MX-ONE (a product of Mitel’s Aastra acquisition) communications server will have access to MarWatch to monitor and manage the performance of these systems, which will expand our footprint in Europe. User-configurable SNMP support, coming this summer, will add significant value. Any SNMP device on a customer’s network (think printers, switches, routers, servers etc.) can be monitored by MarWatch once it is configured by the user. We’ll continue to expand capabilities that help address and prevent problems, including testing and analytics.

ENTREPRENEUR SPOTLIGHT: ANDREW PENNY, KINGSFORD CONSULTING LTD.

Andrew Penny is an expert business and market strategist and a Certified Management Consultant. He launched Kingsford Consulting 18 years ago, and today leads the market facing activities branded “Where to play and how to win.” Andrew has worked with hundreds of organizations and SMBs (Small and Medium-Size Businesses),helping them to expand or improve their businesses.

He is a frequent advisor to the Busi-ness Development Bank of Canada and to the National Research Coun-cil’s Technology Network. Andrew currently sits as the Co-Chair of the Ottawa Chamber of Commerce Economic Development Committee. He is a mentor to the University of Ottawa’s Telfer School of Manage-ment’s EMBA and MBA programs.

Q HOW DID YOU GET STARTED AS A BUSINESS ADVISOR?

Shortly after completing an MBA I found myself between jobs so I called a friend in need of some help in launching a new software product. I pitched in and found that I really enjoyed it helping them solve the business puzzle. I then went on to take a number of other contracts. The business grew out of these small beginnings.

Q: WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST HURDLE TO GETTING YOUR BUSINESS OFF THE GROUND?

The biggest hurdle to getting the business going was courage. I was fortunate to have the support of my wife, who comes from an entre-preneurial family, and we took it day-by-day and month-by-month and soon the business was growing at a steady rate. The next biggest decision was to move away from a home office, pay rent and hire staff.

Q: WHAT ARE THE TYPES OF SERVICES THAT YOU OFFER?

Kingsford Consulting helps small and medium businesses grow. We do this in a variety of ways: onsite mentoring and coaching; workshops; market research; market entry plans; business plans; operational process improvement; leadership and culture assessments and management reorganization.

On top of this, we offer the SMBA Program, a 24 episode online learning experience. We designed it for owners of SMBs to provide them with prac-tical, impactful business advice and activities to apply to their business right away.

Q: WHAT QUALITIES ARE UNIQUE TO KINGSFORD CONSULTING THAT CONTRIBUTE TO ITS SUCCESS?

Our 18 years of management consulting experience gained from working with hundreds of small and medium sized clients over North America and our constant thirst for knowledge and better ways of doing things is what sets us apart. Our success can be attributed to our team, our method-ologies, our passion for business and the high degree of personal engage-ment with every client.

Q WHAT REVOLUTIONARY PRODUCTS HAS KINGSFORD CONSULTING DEVELOPED?

Our SMBA Program is the “MBA” for SMBs. We know business owners are short of time so we distilled our experience to provide the 10% of what business owner needs to be able to do to get 80% of the results. It is deliv-ered in a series of carefully designed weekly episodes that provide infor-mation, tools and activities that help the business owner become a better leader, their teams become better aligned and efficient and ensure that all aspects of their businesses are improving.

ANDREW’S TIPS FOR ENTREPRENEURS1. Figure out how youare going to make a dent in the universe and align yourself and your company around that.

2. Get a coach, mentoror outside perspective of some sort to help you get an objective view of your world.

3. Learn faster thanyour competition.

Page 13: The Kanata Networker June 2015

THE KANATA NETWORKER 11

Q: HOW HAS THE COMPANY EVOLVED SINCE ITS INCEPTION?

In the early day’s most of our work had to do with sales and market strategy for clients the Ottawa area. Now, we have clients all over North America and provide advice in business strategy, new market development, growth plans, operational efficiency and now our online SMBA program.

Q: WHY DID YOU CHOOSE KANATA NORTH FOR YOUR BUSINESS?

It’s a great place to live and to work, fantastic mix of people, lots of facilities and close to nature.

Q: FINALLY, WHERE DID THE NAME KINGSFORD COME FROM?

I’m glad I didn’t choose Penny Consulting considering the Penny has been taken out of circulation. I was looking for something a little more durable and interesting, and one that would allow the company to exist independently from me. I believe that any company should not be about its owner but about the collective value of a motivated team. Conveniently, the street name that I was living on at the time met this criteria, and we have been known as Kingsford Consulting for over 18 years.

CainCo PHOTOGRAPHY: KANATA’S PREMIER PHOTOGRAPHIC ART STUDIO & GALLERY Written by Amie Kandalaft and D. Lovegrove

Specializing in corporate and portrait photography,CainCo Photography is Kanata’s premier photographic art studio and gallery, offering some of the most unique photographic products available. It is the flagship business of South March Studio which houses three additional Cain family art related businesses.

Owner Steve Cain has been heavily involved with photography for over 40 years and is a member of the West Ottawa Board of Trade (WOBoT), Wedding and Portrait Photographers International (WPPI) and recently joined the Professional Photogra-phers of Canada (PPoC), where he is currently working towards his PPoC National Accreditation which will be completed later this year.

CainCo Photography services the corporate and business industries for head shots, product photographs, facility images and executive portraits. The studio has an extensive client list which continues to grow, including technology companies, retail busi-

nesses, financial institutions and health care providers. CainCo has several years of experience in the technology environment. Whether it’s hardware, software, or mechanical, they have provided product shots and services for numerous business sectors. “We work with you to establish and main-tain your corporate branding while being sensitive to your business’ privacy needs,” says Cain.

Having his imagery published inter-nationally within a variety of mediums such as books, newspapers, maga-zines, technical publications, corporate newsletters, annual reports, brochures and web-based platforms, Cain boasts no shortage of achievements. He has photographed celebrities, dignitaries, executives, facilities, and a variety of products including spaceflight hard-ware for the International Space Station and NASA’s now retired Space Shuttle fleet. In 2011, the studio was a finalist for the People’s Choice Small Business of the Year (Kanata), and Cain has been a finalist for multiple interna-tional competitions, recently winning first place for a portrait image.

Portrait sessions are uniquely tailored to the client, and based upon their personality. They offer both in-studio and on-location photography, and can produce products on a variety of media including aluminium, plexiglass and encaustic wax. Examples of such are on proud display in their studio.

Steve got his start shooting weddings and concerts, developing the film in a darkroom at home. However, with the rapid advancement of digital imaging technology, and training in electronics engineering, he has no intentions to return to his roots. It has been almost 20 years since he’s done any photog-raphy with a roll of film. “I still shoot the occasional wedding, but have since focussed on corporate work and portraiture. As the business grows, I have established a stable of photog-raphers to draw on, and have recently brought in a studio assistant.”

The current version, CainCo Photog-raphy, was established in 2007, with its studio doors opening on Hazeldean Road in January 2010, becoming a full-time business within a year. CainCo Photography moved to Kanata North

(on the corner of March and Klon-dike) in the spring of 2013 after a 6 month search for a suitable location with higher visibility. “When I built my house in the country in 1989, I had no idea the place where we bought our pizza would one day become my studio!” says Cain, a Kanata North resident for over 25 years.

“I believe in giving back to the commu-nity, and have supported over 40 local charitable events to-date. I have an ongoing fundraising project since 2010, which provides funding to the Capital City Condors special-needs kids hockey organization.”

Having his studio only a short drive from home is not the only advantage of CainCo Photography’s Kanata North location according to Cain. Other benefits include the abundance of scenic opportunities for outdoor shoots and being located in the heart of his target market, in addition to a rapidly growing residential area for portraiture. Clients have the option of bringing product or personnel to the studio, or can arrange for onsite photography to capture their facility as well.
