Dear fellow Brother Knights----Happy “New Year”! Yes, the summer is upon us, the sun is blazing, the bar-b-que grills are lit—but Happy New Year?! Yes, it’s a new Fraternal year starting this month as we begin again with a full year of events, activities, and opportunities to get involved and make a difference! To that end, your Officers and Committee Chairman have compiled a year-long capsule view of our calendar of events and happenings from Soup Kitchen, Youth activities, supporting the Domestic Church; to Felice Coeur’s Dances and the Tootsie Roll Drive for the developmentally disabled, New Year’s Eve party, Bingo, Coat drive, bartending, etc., — a virtual plethora of opportunities to contribute your time and talent to our mission! So, re-energize yourself and pick out what most interests you—believe me, you will be making a difference and you will feel good about it. We will be starting the year off with a short early meeting at 6:30 pm on July 13th followed by a Bar-b–que dinner. What a great way to start the “New Year”! Finally, we wish God’s speed and safe harbor to our beloved Pastor, Fr. Tom, as he departs St. Joe’s and takes up his new ministry at St. Simon. What an impact Fr. Tom made on our community here, and he was not only an ardent supporter of our Council, but was there for us whenever we needed him. We will never forget it and will always be eternally grateful and blessed to have had Fr. Tom. We welcome our new Pastor Fr. Tom Pastorius to St. Joe’s, and as soon as his schedule permits, we will make sure to invite him to one of our meetings. See you on the 13th! Knights Helping Hand for Brother

Jim Winkler

The Proposal: At Marian Council #9522 Meeting of April 20, 2017 Brother Sir Knight Denny Pezzani asked if it would be appropriate for Knights to provide a helping hand for Brother Jim Winkler to help with some chores he has been unable to complete. These included, but will not be limited to, power washing his home, edging his sidewalk and driveway, and preparing his pool for use. The team would also help with any project Jim would need assistance with. Knights voted “yes” unanimously, and volunteers were sought. The Team responded positively.

The Team: Brother Sir Knight Gene Banner Brother Sir Knight Denny Pezzani Brother Knight Tom Landzaat Brother Sir Knight Jim Schuessler Brother Sir Knight Fred Lueckenotte Brother Knight Tom Will

The Budget: A budget of $150.00 was approved for any materials needed. Any tools needed will be furnished by team members.

The Process: Thursday April 26, 2017 was set as the work date. Heavy rain forced the team to postpone because Jim’s yard was too soaked to safely support a ladder. The consensus was that we would try for a date in early May. Jim Schuessler purchased 4 (0.75gal) bottles of “Wet & Forget™” to help remove algae, etc. Tom Will was going to purchase flowers for three (3) large outdoor pots, and when I asked Jim if he wanted them planted he said “yes”, but he had already purchased the flowers for them. We will do the planting.

………. Thursday May 11, 2017 was set at the next date. Threat of rain caused us to postpone. If there was any rain Wednesday or Thursday Jim’s yard would again be too water soaked to permit the use of any ladders. I did verify the marshy ground on May 11th. ………. Tuesday, May 16, 2017 was out next agreed upon date to work. As it turned out the weather was dry but the temperature was 87°. The task goes on! We met as agreed at 10:00am at Jim Winkler’s home. Team members supplied all the tools needed, so we were able to proceed without any problems.

We started by cutting Jim’s entire yard. That may seem simple on the surface, but there were areas of the back yard that had not yet been cut this season. After mowing, the entire driveway and sidewalks were trimmed smartly and the trimmings were shoveled up and the entire area was blown clean… looks nice! The next chore was to deal with extreme – and I mean extreme – buildup of moss, algae, etc. on the house and decorative fence. We used a mixture of Tide™ and bleach to first soak the area; we then power washed to remove the residue. The final step was to spray all areas with “Wet & Forget”. The result, as you can see, is pretty stunning. We repeated the process on a rail that Jim had installed years before, and also got great results. Our last little bit of help involved repairing the decorative fence (you can see it in the photo of the side of the house) where pickets had busted loose. We spent a solid four (4) hours on the process, and I believe we all felt wonderful (and tired) after the experience. Jim Winkler was thrilled and very appreciative – that’s what we Knights do for our brothers. ………. Thursday, May 18, 2017 and the beat goes on! There were some flowers that Jim wanted planted in five (5) large pots around his pool. My wife Joan and my neighbor Gayle Lueders tackled the task with ease. The flowers were in pots around the pool (NOTE: Jim has decided that he will NOT use the pool this year, so the flowers are just there for Jim and his wife to enjoy. ………. Thursday, June 1, 2017: Walking by Jim’s I noticed that his sidewalk and driveway could stand to be trimmed again, so I went down and trimmed, blew, and applied Roundup™ to the seams.

The Cost: Wet & Forget™ (1 x 0.75gal) $ 10.61

The Service Hours: May 16th, 2017: fourteen (14) Service Hours May 18th, 2017: one (1) Service Hour June 1st, 2017: one (1) Service Hour Total: sixteen (16) Service Hours

Gene Banner turns his head so he doesn’t have to see Tom Landzaat

tumble to the ground… just kidding ☺ To Tom’s right you can see the growth

This is what we encountered on the entire house, fence, & gazebo!

However, it all cleaned up very well!
