KEVIN WEISS/STAFF PHOTOEnid and Kinsley Haye show off their giant gourd in their backyard. It weighs about 25pounds, and they plan to share it with others.

The Laker/Lutz News Staff Report

While other people were rippingthrough brightly wrapped packages to seewhat presents they received this holidayseason, Enid and Kinsley Haye have un-earthed a gift of their own from theirbackyard garden.

In Jamaica, the Land O’ Lakes couplesaid, the 25-pound vegetable they un-earthed is called a pumpkin.

Here, it’s better known as a squash.Regardless of what the gourd is called,

however, the couple said it is the largestplant of its kind that they’ve ever grown.

“I’ve never seen it grow so big,” Enidsaid. “We’ve had them three years now, andthis is the biggest one. I said, ‘Lord, I wonderwhy you make this one so big.’

“We’re so excited about it,” she said. She and her husband are avid gardeners. They’ve been growing fruits and vegeta-

bles in their backyard since moving fromBridgeport, Connecticut, to Land O’ Lakesin 2004.

In addition to their pride-and-joy veggie, they also cultivate sugarcane, bananas, yams, avocados, scotch-bonnet peppers, string beans and gungo peas in their gar-den. And, they grow ginger, rosemary, sorrel, yucca and cassava.

The plan is to take their giant veggie to aharvest in Lakeland. There, they’ll cut it upand give pieces to members of theirchurch—Jesus is Coming EvangelicalMinistry. They also plan to give away sugar-cane and peppers.

They moved to Land O’ Lakes afterKinsley, a welder for 26 years, retired.

They don’t miss Bridgeport’s weather.“Oh, it’s too cold up there, man.” Kinsley

said. “That’s the reason why we moveddown here. It’s a much better climate —like Jamaica.”

Their backyard garden here has many ofthe same fruits and vegetables they grew inJamaica.

They said they start planting eachspring, and they’re ready to harvest inDecember.

The garden is manageable, they said, aslong as they can keep up with the weedingand keep out the bugs.

Besides sharing their bounty, they enjoyusing the vegetables they grow to makehomemade soups.

They also combine the sorrel they growwith a ginger root, to make a traditionalJamaican drink. The beverage is usedaround Thanksgiving and Christmas, some-times as a less expensive substitute forwine.

Connerton and Pasco on the path to new homesBy Kathy [email protected]

Kyle and Melody Marks fit in nicely withthe demographics that are driving residen-tial growth in Pasco County.

And, these young professionals are clearon the lifestyle they want for themselvesand their two children, Amelia, age 5, andBrody, age 7.

In six months, they plan to move from astarter home to a new and larger home inConnerton, a master-planned community offLand O’ Lakes Boulevard, also known as U.S.41.

Connerton is one of Pasco’s up-and-com-ing neighborhoods attracting eager buyerswho want bang for their buck, a touch ofthe rural, and the amenities of big city life.

The Marks are saying goodbye to thetemptation to cross the county line intoHillsborough or Pinellas, in search of a goodrestaurant or a shopping excursion.

“There is no more traveling back toTampa for everything,” said Melody Marks.

The Marks set their sights on Connertonmonths ago, and became the first buyers ofa Lennar-built home in the community.

Lennar is the newest homebuilder tooffer homes at Connerton.

The Marks are part of an overall resur-gence of home buying in Pasco County, which is recovering from the disastrous eco-nomic downturn in 2008.

Back then, new home construction con-stricted.

And, many residents saw their existinghousing values plummet.

Some are still underwater, with mort-gages that are higher than their propertyvalues.

But, that is changing, said Jeff Morin, vicepresident of sales for Lennar Homes.

“People wouldn’t sell before, becausethey were upside down,” he said. “Thisuptick has allowed people to be more com-fortable that they can break even or make alittle money.”

Developers are building more rooftops, and a growing population has hit criticalmass and pay dirt for retail.

Tampa Premium Outlets is the most visi-

ble tip of an explosion of new shops, restau-rants, hotels and offices that are here or ontheir way.

“We do everything over here,” MelodyMarks reiterated.

When the Marks signed their contract, itwasn’t just for the shops and restaurants orbecause Kyle Marks’ parents already live inConnerton.

“It’s a lot more affordable here,” said KyleMarks.

Statistics bear that out.The year-to-date median price of a home

in Hillsborough and Pinellas is about$218,000, while Pasco’s median price isabout $154,000, according to data from MyFlorida Regional MLS.

Connerton’s housing prices generallybegin in the low $200,000s, said StewGibbons, president and chief executive offi-cer of Gibbons Group.

That price falls into the sweet spot forPasco housing sales of between $140,000and $250,000, again based on data from My

Florida Regional MLS.More than 350 families live in

Connerton.Connerton’s new home sales have aver-

aged 100 or more annually in the past twoyears, and Gibbons anticipates that will in-crease by 50 percent in the next year.

Gibbons pioneered living in Connertonwhen he bought a home in 2006. He and afew other residents waited out the recovery.

“We knew ultimately it’s cyclical, eventhough this is one of the worst cycles everseen and the worst downturn the nationhas seen.” Gibbons said.

But, he said now, “That’s created pent updemand. It’s growing as confidence grows.”

For a time, the economic downturnturned the master-planned community intoa poster child for a stalled future.

New construction of roads and street-lights stuck out in a neighborhood of blankspaces where hundreds of homes shouldbe.

The future is much rosier now.

Plans for a town center and shops areback in the picture, likely to happen withintwo to five years, Gibbons said.

Pasco County owns about 20 acres thatis set aside for a government center.

Connerton Elementary School is open, and Sanders Memorial Elementary STEAMSchool, an elementary magnet school, is lo-cated to the south, off U.S. 41.

Residents currently can enjoy about twomiles of nature trails.

Connerton is unique in pegging its hous-ing numbers to job creation, as part of astate incentive program.

At 2,000 homes, for instance, 500 jobsmust be documented within a one-mile ra-dius.

More houses, shops, offices and hotelsare on the way.

“Pasco should be pretty robust,” saidGibbons. “The number of rooftops relates toretail that can be supported. They withhelduntil the market returned. It’s rising every-where.”

At the height of the housing bubble,6,000 homes were selling annually. Gibbonssaid it hit a low of about 1,000 homes ayear, but has risen to about 2,500 this year.

There is potential within five years toreach between 6,000 and 7,000 housingsales a year, he said.

Gibbons remains sold on Pasco’s econo-my, and Connerton, in particular.

“It’s easy to meet people. I’m still here. Istill love it,” Gibbons said.

KATHY STEELE/STAFF PHOTOSKyle, Amelia and Melody Marks, left, will wait about six months for their new Lennar home tobe built in Connerton. Stew Gibbons, president of Gibbons Group, and Jeff Morin, vice pres-ident of sales for Lennar joined them at the newly opened Lennar model home.

The sign at the entrance to Connerton isdecorated for the holidays. The master-planned community is seeing an uptick inhousing sales.

O.B. Stander, president of AMIkids Pasco, recently updated the Pasco County SchoolBoard on changes being made to improve theprogram.

The changes are in response to theboard’s Dec. 1 vote to terminate the organiza-tion’s contract effective Jan. 29.

When they took the vote, board membersmade it clear they would revisit the issue andwould reinstate AMIkids Pasco, if the organi-zation could demonstrate substantialimprovement in its performance by Jan. 12.

The board’s initial action came at the rec-ommendation of Superintendent KurtBrowning, who informed the board that sub-stantial progress would be needed.

At the same time, Browning said he hopesAMIkids Pasco can turn the program around,so it could continue operating it.

AMIkids Pasco serves 46 students, whocome from across Pasco County.

The program serves 25 therapeutic emo-tional/behavior disability students and 21students in the Department of JuvenileJustice program at a campus of portables onU.S. 41, north of State Road 52 at 18950Michigan Lane in Spring Hill.

If AMIkids Pasco makes considerableprogress, Browning said he will recommendthat the board revoke the termination; other-wise, the district will take over operation ofthe site on Jan. 29.

Browning said discontinuing the district’srelationship with AMIkids Pasco is not thepreferable option for him or for Pasco CountySchools.

Stander told board members that retiredprincipal Pat Reedy has been helping AMIkidsPasco in the development of an enhanced ac-tion plan.

“We changed the school’s leadership teamto strengthen both the educational and be-havioral modification expertise,” Stander said.

The upgraded park also has a new con-cession building with restrooms and ameeting room, a maintenance building, open space, two shelters, new parking lots, anew playground and a remodeled patioarea. There’s also a four-tenths-of-a-milewalking trail.

Over the years, the Heritage ParkFoundation has had all sorts of fundraisersand events to draw attention to its cause.

Foundation members sold turkey legs atthe community’s Flapjack Festivals, sold cof-fee at the opening of the Suncoast Parkway,

sold water at a balloon festival at StarkeyPark, and sold doughnuts and coffee at theCentral Pasco Chamber’s community expos.

They also had events, such as Traditionson the Green and Scarecrows ‘N Stuff, tokeep the issue in the public eye.

Both the county and the school districtwill benefit from the project, by using it forvarious public and school cultural activities, including music, dance, theater, creativewriting, visual arts and other art forms, ac-cording to the agreement the school boardapproved.

On the education scene, there was achanging of the guard in top leadership atSaint Leo University, just outside Dade City.Dr. Arthur Kirk retired, and Dr. William J.Lennox Jr. assumed the top post.

Pasco-Hernando State College also has anew president, with Dr. Timothy Beardbeing named to the post after the retire-ment of Dr. Katherine Johnson.

The state college’s Porter Campus atWiregrass Ranch also hit a milestone, an-nouncing that it would be surpassing the3,000-student enrollment mark.

On another front, Sanders MemorialElementary School reopened in Land O’Lakes, as Pasco County Schools’ first magnetschool. It is a STEAM school, with a curricu-lum that focuses on science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics.

Pine View Middle School also launchedan effort to become the public school dis-

trict’s first International BaccalaureateMiddle Years Programme.

And, Wiregrass Ranch High School inWesley Chapel began operating on a 10-pe-riod school day, to reduce the number ofstudents on campus at the same time.

A more permanent solution to WiregrassRanch’s overcrowding is expected to occurwhen the district opens a new school forgrades six through 12 that is being con-structed on Old Pasco Road.

In another change, the district adoptednew boundaries for a new elementary schoolin Wesley Chapel, off Mansfield Boulevard, which is scheduled to open next fall.

The new school will relieve significantovercrowding at Seven Oaks Elementary. The boundary shifts, which were controver-sial, will increase enrollment at DenhamOaks Elementary in Lutz.

In other school news, St. TimothyCatholic Church in Lutz opened the SaintPaul II Youth Center and opened a new ele-mentary school to house Mother Teresa ofCalcutta Catholic School.

Saint Anthony Catholic School alsomarked a milestone — dedicating a newbrick classroom building in February.

While much of the news in 2015 was

about progress and new beginnings, not allof the news was positive.

For instance, the GFWC Lutz Land O’Lakes Woman’s Club was forced to cancelits 36th annual arts and crafts show, becausea sinkhole developed at Lake Park.

The annual two-day event, which hasdrawn about 30,000 shoppers a year, wasthe club’s biggest fundraiser. So, besides dis-appointing shoppers and about 300vendors, the cancellation also will reducethe club’s ability to help scores of communi-ty organizations and charities.

The year also was marked by the passingof Land O’ Lakes cross country coach KrisKeppel and Laura Hauser, a former non-in-structional employee of the year, whoworked at Wesley Chapel Elementary beforeshe became too ill to work. Both lost battleswith cancer. And, car accidents claimed thelives of Pasco High student Jordan Ivie andWesley Chapel High.

These deaths inspired demonstrations ofrespect, generosity, compassion and kind-ness — to help those grieving their loss.

In another show of support, the commu-nity of San Antonio rallied to hold a benefit

for Lewis and Diane Riggleman, whosehome was destroyed by fire.

Other uplifting moments involvedSuellen Smith, the cafeteria manager atZephyrhills High, who continues her tradi-tion of collecting and giving away dressshirts, dress pants, gowns and dresses tohelp outfit young men and women forprom, homecoming, weddings and otherspecial occasions.

Another big moment for 2015 involvedLeigh Dittman, a Gaither High student fromLutz.

The 15-year-old recently reached a goalshe set when she was 7: To raise $1 millionfor Shriners Hospitals for Children.

The young woman has a disorder knownas Osteogenesis Imperfecta, also known asbrittle bone disease.

During a recent interview, she said shewas motivated to raise the money forShriners because of how giving it has beento her.

“They are such an amazing group of peo-ple, and they’ve given me so much, with mylife. It seemed like the right thing to do,”Dittman said.

“We provide the materials at every one ofour schools that support our students inlearning to read and learning to read ongrade level,” Browning said.

“They wanted additional materials andwere asking for contributions to pay forthose additional materials,” he said.

He also asked teachers and other staffmembers to be careful when they are mak-ing social media appeals to be sure theyaccurately convey the nature of the request.

“The whole Go Fund Me pages and theDonor Choose pages, in my opinion, are in-

credibly problematic for this district,” hesaid. “They’re problematic as a whole.”

Sometimes requests are made for materi-als that are not compatible with districtneeds, he said. For instance, “iPad minis willnot support many of the things that we doin classrooms,” he said.

Browning also noted, it’s impossible forthe district to monitor all of the requeststhat are posted on social media.

With 87 schools in the district, he said,“We just don’t have the resources to dothat.”

So, he urged caution in the postings, not-ing the message they send doesn’t just affectone school, but reflects on the entire district.

Fresh start for softball at Carrollwood Day School By Michael [email protected]

Frank Arcuri has nearly three decades ofexperience coaching softball. He was an as-sistant coach for Eckerd College last year, and spent many years in travel ball, wherehe won multiple championships. Hisdaughters even played Division I collegesoftball.

So what brings him to Carrollwood DaySchool, 1515 W. Bearss Ave., to head theirsoftball program?

It’s the timing. Not for the coach; for theplayers.

“I feel like my niche is the 14-, 15-, 16-year-old athlete,” Arcuri explained. They’reright where you want them in the develop-ment stage, and it’s a real joy to take themto the next level of playing.”

At the college level, coaches are doingmore fine-tuning and strategizing with play-ers, he said. But when they’re a few yearsyounger, they can still learn new things toimprove their game significantly, yet they’vealready established that they have the talentto compete.

Carrollwood Day School’s softball teamhas already demonstrated its abilities.

The Patriots have reached the regionalsin state playoff competition in each of thepast three seasons, including a trip to thestate semifinals a couple of seasons ago.

Arcuri wants to build on that success, but there’s a lot of time between now andthe start of the season. That’s why he want-ed the team to participate in a HillsboroughCounty fall league, to give the players timeto gain extra experience and additionaltime playing together.

It also enables Arcuri to have a chance toevaluate his team before the season starts,he said. By identifying its areas of strength, and what needs the most work, he can pre-pare efficiently, and get the most out of histeam.

Arcuri believes he can get more out ofthe team by having the athletes play onother teams. He doesn’t want them toadopt a “softball all year” attitude, which isbecoming more prominent in athleticstoday. Instead, he wants them to focus on

school and encourages them to play othersports that might even help them with im-proved footwork when they return to thesoftball field.

“Track and basketball are very good. Sois soccer,” Arcuri said.

That footwork will be important, be-cause he wants speed to be a character traitof his team. He’s considering bringing aspecial trainer out to teach them differenttechniques, and to allow players to usetheir speed to cause problems for opposingdefenses.

Arcuri also will focus on selling the pro-gram to the team and building trust, sincehe views himself as a players’ coach.

With so much experience teaching andcoaching at different age levels, he has agood feel for how to handle athletes at dif-ferent stages of development. And forfemale athletes in high school, the bestmethod is to instruct without being toocritical, he said. It’s better to use positivelanguage to put them at ease, but keepthem in a learning mindset.

“It’s pretty good, but let me show youwhere it might be even better to help youout,” Arcuri suggests as a method of teach-ing an athlete a new technique. “You haveto keep a positive spin on everything.”

As he settles into his new job, Arcuri isalready feeling positive about the talent he’sinheriting, the school’s commitment to asuccessful program, and the opportunity toteach young players and make a good ath-lete even better.

“There are some good players overthere. I was impressed with the talent levelat such a small school,” Arcuri said. “I can’twait to get started.”

LOL girls soccer works hard, aims high and consistently winsBy Michael [email protected]

When a team lets the opponent score11 goals in soccer, it sounds like the de-fense is struggling.

But, when those goals occur over a 17-game span, it sounds like a championshipdefense.

The Land O’ Lakes Gators girls soccerteam is seeking a championship, and thedefending Class 3A-8 champions are off toa 15-2 start.

Earlier this year, the Gators closed outits previous season in a 2-1 loss in the titlegame against American Heritage fromPlantation.

While some teams might stumble a bitafter that kind of loss, Land O’ Lakes hasraced to a strong start. Aside from a 3-0loss to Academy of the Holy Names onDec. 1 and a 2-3 loss to Mitchell High onDec. 14, only a handful of their gameshave been particularly close. And, theyhave won several of their games by sizablemargins.

Coach Vicky King doesn’t see any se-

cret formula to the Gators’ success.“We work hard. We do have a good bit

of talent. They have high expectations,”she said. “We work for everything we get.We know that nothing is given to us.”

That work includes a preseason condi-tioning program, which ensures that theathletes are in good shape when the firstwhistle sounds. Many of them also playclub soccer, which helps, King said.

Many of them also play on differentclub teams, which the coach sees as an ad-vantage. The players come together afterbeing exposed to a variety of philosophiesand styles of play, and when they play fortheir high school team, they execute at ahigh level on the field.

Even bumps in the road can have posi-tive benefits. The loss to the Academy(who was also undefeated) was a lessonthat they still have areas that need im-provement.

“It was a good game. It was very chal-lenging for us and shows what we need towork on,” King said. “It makes us refocus. Ifwe want to reach our goals and succeed, then we know we have work to do.”

“Work” is a common theme with King.It has built a strong program over her 29years as the team’s soccer coach, and it’ssomething she discusses with her playersregardless of their opponent or theirrecord at the time. By maintaining thatfocus, it builds a level of expectation thatfreshmen and sophomores recognize im-mediately, and work to meet or exceedfrom the very beginning.

It also helps maintain impressiverecords from year to year. Including thetwo losses this year, the team has lost onlysix games since the beginning of the2013-14 season.

With that much success, some coachesmight see a return to the state champi-onship game as a likely event, or at leastone that has a good chance of happening. But, King lives by the “one game at a time”mentality she preaches to the athletes.Like her players, she takes nothing forgranted and only allows that continuedsuccess is a possibility if they remain fo-cused and work hard.

“A lot of things can happen. They’reteenagers. Injuries, illness — the cards

have to fall just right,” she said. Those cards tend to fall into place for

Land O’ Lakes, but it doesn’t happen withanimated yelling or aggressive coachingon game days. The real work is done inpractice, King said. If a team is preparedand focused, that should show up on thefield. And, with all the players understand-ing what’s expected of them, most of thepieces are already in place when they steponto the field.

At that point, it’s up to them to exe-cute. With all her success (the team won astate title in 2003) King said it’s ultimatelytheir team, and they understand what ittakes to continue the winning legacy ofLand O’ Lakes girls soccer.

“I coach the team, but the team be-longs to the players,” she said. “It’s theirteam. They know what our expectationsare as far as performance on the field, per-formance in the classroom andperformance in the community.”

The team has two remaining games onits schedule. It plays Pasco High on Jan. 6at 7:45 p.m., and it plays Tampa Catholicon Jan. 8 at 7 p.m.

After finishing in secondplace to Sunlake High at theEastside Tournament on Dec.16, the Zephyrhills girlsweightlifting team hopes tobuild off that momentumonce district qualifiers begin.

The Bulldogs notched 47points, behind Sunlake (71points), but ahead of third-place finisher Land O’ Lakes(38 points) at the tournament.

“We did better than I ex-pected and better than years’past,” said Zephyrhills’ headcoach Joseph Rinaldo, who’sin his ninth season. “Over thepast five years, I think it’s the best we’veever done. Granted 71 to 47 is a big lead, but I didn’t expect for us to score as manypoints as we did.”

The Bulldogs’ next test is the 1A district

qualifier on Jan. 13 at River Ridge HighSchool in New Port Richey.

The road to advancing to regionals andpossibly the state finals is perhaps more fa-vorable for the Bulldogs since bumping

down from Class 2A to 1A.“We’re in a lower division

now, and there’s less teamsthat we’ve seen in years past,so it should be advanta-geous,” Rinaldo remarked.

Rinaldo added there’s a“long way to go” before theBulldogs can think aboutreaching the state champi-onships. For example, theteam must improve certainaspects of their weightliftingtechniques by the time dis-trict qualifiers ramp up.

“There are things thataren’t major, but can becleaned up,” Coach Rinaldopointed out. “Some of thesegirls haven’t peaked yet.

Some (girls) are still misfiring.“It’s time to get people in the right posi-

tions to try to advance to regionals, andfrom there, try to get them to states,” hesaid.
