We offer a number of English Language ImprovementCourses ranging from those aimed at preparing students forstudy on further academic courses here at Edge Hill tosummer programmes for those wishing to improve theirEnglish Language ability whilst learning about, andexperiencing, British culture.

The courses are delivered through a mixture of lectures,tutorials, small group seminars and independent study. Ourteachers all have considerable experience of teachinginternational students whose first language is not English.They understand the challenges you may face and the teachingmethods which will be most beneficial. The needs of thestudents are central to the design and development of eachcourse.

There are no more than 15 students in each class allowing thetutors to spend time with individuals as well as allowingstudents to work together in a comfortable, supportiveenvironment.

All of our courses have a full social programme to helpstudents make friends and get to know the North West ofEngland. We are committed to supporting you at all times,aiming to make your studies both stimulating and enjoyable.

Pre Sessional English Language Courses

The following courses are the ideal programme of study for you if you wish to progress to further academic study at Edge HillUniversity and need to improve you English Language ability to meet the entry criteria for direct entry to our degree programmes

If you have an IELTS score of 5.5 and would like to improve that score to 6.0, our 6-week course will be ideal, whereas if youhave an IELTS score of 5.0, a 12-week course is available. If your IELTS score is 4.5 the 36 week course is right for you.

The table below will help you decide which course is appropriate.

The aim of this programme is to enhance your English language skills in terms of speaking, listening, reading and writing. Thecourse will help you improve your listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in English whilst also enhancing yourunderstanding of English grammar and punctuation.

English for specific academic purposes will also be studied, strengthening your fundamental English language skills in termsof subject specific academic requirements.

Assessment will be through a combination of assignments, coursework and examinations. Your final assessment will be anIETLS style examination.

Successful completion of a pre-sessional course will allow entry onto an Edge Hill University degree programme (subject toavailability and at the module leader's discretion).

International Foundation Programme

This course is ideal for you if you do not possess British A-Level qualifications (Year 13) or equivalent. You may have justfinished or nearly finished your studies in high school, equivalent to British AS level (Year 12) and if so this course will provideyou with the additional academic qualifications you need.

The IFP's three main aims are to:• Improve your English language skills;• Introduce you to the subject area of your choice for subsequent degree studies;• Develop academic and critical thinking skills to enable you to study successfully at degree level.

The modules on the course will help you improve your listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in English whilst alsoenhancing your understanding of English grammar and punctuation.

You will develop skills in systematic thinking and critical argument and be introduced to a range of academic and personaldevelopment skills.

Having chosen the subject you would like to pursue at degree level, you will have the opportunity to develop an introductoryknowledge and understanding of the subject area together with the core research skills required for your chosen discipline.

There are two routes for the IFP:• Route A is for those who need to improve their IELTS score• Route B is for those who already have the required IELTS score or for whom English is their first language.

Course datesBoth routes for the International Foundation Programme can be studied on a full-time basis over 6 or 12 months. The 12 monthroute starts in September, the 6 month route runs from February.

Entry requirements – Route AEvidence of successful academic attainment at a level equivalent of British AS level (Year 12). You will also need IELTS 5.0overall (with no individual element below 4.0) or equivalent for entry to this course. If you do not have this level you may takepart in the appropriate Pre Sessional English Language Course first. If you fall marginally short of this IELTS requirementplease contact us to discuss.

Entry requirements – Route BEvidence of successful academic attainment at a level equivalent of British AS level (Year 12) and evidence of B1 English languageachievement.

Route A Modules• General English 1 and 2 - helping you to improve your

listening, speaking, reading and writing in English to enable you to achieve at least a pass grade at the Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English or IELTS 6.0 - 6.5 or equivalent

• English Grammar and Pronunciation - concentrating on improving your fundamental English language skills

• Critical Analysis and Systematic Thinking for Higher Education - developing your skills in systematic thinking and critical argument, key skills required for undergraduate studies and beyond

• Developing Academic Skills - introducing you to a range of academic and personal development skills and providing a foundation for the study of undergraduate degree programmes

• English for Specific Academic Purposes - strengthening your fundamental English language skills in terms of subject specific academic requirements

• Introduction to Subject / Discipline Studies - equipping you with an introductory knowledge and understanding of the subject / discipline of your own choice

• Academic Research Methods - developing the core research skills needed for successful transition to degree study. This will be within the framework of devising and implementing a research plan based on your chosen subject / discipline

Route B Modules• English Literacy - concentrating on improving your

comprehension ability and English language skills• Critical Analysis and Systematic Thinking for Higher

Education - developing your skills in systematic thinking and critical argument, key skills required for undergraduate studies and beyond

• Developing Academic Skills - introducing you to a range of academic and personal development skills and providing a foundation for the study of undergraduate degree programmes

• Academic Writing - strengthening your fundamental English language skills in terms of subject specific academic requirements

• Introduction to Subject / Discipline Studies 1 and 2 - equipping you with an introductory knowledge and understanding in the subject / discipline of your choice

Pre Masters Programme

If you are interested in studying for a postgraduate qualification but do not meet the entry requirements for our Mastersprogrammes, the Pre Masters Programme provides an entry route for international students onto selected one-year, full-timeEdge Hill University Masters awards.

It provides an opportunity for those without the standard entry requirements for a number of selected Edge Hill Masters coursesto achieve a Graduate Diploma and develop the academic and English language skills, subject-specific knowledge and coreresearch techniques required for postgraduate study.

It will also enable you to improve your English Language level and enhance your aptitude for academic and critical thinking.

You will acquire the specific skills needed for Masters level study including learning how to organise, plan and manage yourown time - essential skills for your future career.

The modules on the course will help you improve your listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in English, includingenhancing your grammar and punctuation.

Having chosen the subject you would like to pursue at Masters level, you will have the opportunity to develop knowledge andunderstanding of the subject area together with the core research skills required for your chosen discipline.

There is also a specialist English language module designed to strengthen your fundamental English skills in terms of anyspecific academic requirements for your choice of degree.

Course datesThe Pre Masters Programme can be studied on a full-time basis over 6 or 12 months. The 12 month route starts in September,the 6 month route runs from February.

Entry requirementsYou will need either a Higher Diploma or a minimum of a third-class degree, along with IELTS 5.5 overall (with no individualelement below 5.5) or an equivalent English Language qualification for entry to this course. If you do not have this level youmay take part in the appropriate Pre Sessional English Language Course first.

• Academic Research Methods - developing the core research skills needed for successful transition to degree study. This will be within the framework of devising and implementing a research plan based on your chosen subject / discipline

English Language Improvement and British Culture Courses

These courses are designed for anyone wanting to improve their English Language skills and learn more about British culture.You will be taught by our team of English Language teachers, all of whom have a vast experience of helping students to developtheir language skills for academic and everyday purposes.

Each course covers functional, conversational and academic language development and provides the opportunity for an informalexit assessment allowing you to see evidence of the progress you have made.

15 week courseAn accommodation and catering package is included as partof the course fee and you will find further details of this on ourwebsite.

During the course you will be able to take part in a range ofoptional social activities including both on campus activitiesand off campus excursions and sightseeing visits. We starteach course with a Welcome Event where you will enjoygetting to know your fellow students and the teaching andsupport team who will be with you throughout the course.

Course datesDuration – 15 weeksThe course runs from October to December

Entry requirements There are no formal entry requirements for this course.

Summer CourseAccommodation and catering are provided as part of thecourse fee for this summer programme as detailed below:

You will be accommodated in a single ensuite room in one ofour high quality student residences on campus. In blocks ofsix rooms, each with TV and WIFI, you will have access to afully fitted kitchen and all cooking utensils.

Breakfast and lunch will be provided day except Saturday andSunday.

During the 4 week course you will be able to take part in arange of social activities both on campus and off. We starteach course with a Welcome Event where you will enjoygetting to know your fellow students and the teaching andsupport team who will be with you throughout the course.Each week different activities are available for you to take partin during the evening such as pub quizzes, cinema trips,bowling, theatre trips. Each weekend a full day excursion isoffered, along with 2 half day trips each week to varioushistorical and cultural places of interest, for example themagnificent castle of Conwy in Wales or the Jorvik VikingCentre in York. You may also wish to visit places such asLondon or Edinburgh
