CHINESE: ”IN 2014 I USED THE TUTORS IN THE FOLLOWING WAYS …” JAPANESE1. Year 9 first language students. Individual tuition. 2. I booked 8 lessons for 4 year 8 beginners students while I taught the heritage students. I gave the tutor a new topic and she did a few lessons.3. Year 11 students finish one period early - I booked three tutors for 3-5 students to practise their oral. I emailed the questions to the tutors. We did this for two terms. 4. We tried a couple of lunchtime sessions. 5. Year 12 and 11 students did individual session after school or in their free periods. They also did sessions from home.

“A great service. My students have really appreciated the opportunity for some short (10-15 minutes) small group (3-4 students) mini-lessons with the tutors. I have also used them for whole class lessons but am particularly liking the opportunity to provide conversation practice in smaller groups for my students. The tutors are very accommodating and make the conversation practice enjoyable for students.”•Secondary teacher, Qld.

Popular topics:•Introductions •Family and friends•Hobbies and free time activities•School and school subjects•Weather and seasons•Holidays •Food and drink (likes & dislikes, Indonesian delicacies)•Transportation•Wayang kulit (Indonesian shadow puppet: what it is, how to make ‘simplified’ wayang, story telling)•Indonesian traditional costumes•Sayembara Lisan (Speech Competition) preparation•Indonesian phrases for travelling

Activities-The sayembara lisan: Practising with LLS tutors has helped their preparation. -‘Fashion show’. LLS tutor assisted students describing what they were wearing.

-‘Tulis cepat’ (write quickly) game worked very well with Year 9 students. In this game, students raced to write the name of food & drink shown on PPT (that was shared by the LLS tutor), Students then read the words to the tutor (so tutor could check/correct their pronunciation).

-The student enjoyed playing ‘hot seat’ game when discussing the weather. 1 student from each of 2 groups sat with their backs on the screen (so couldn’t see the words shown on the screen) and had to guess. -‘1-minute Talk’ with Year 12 worked really well. Students could choose a topic they wanted to talk about and afterwards the tutor asked questions related to what they have talked about.
