Chapter News

One of the missions of the IIA is to

promote the audit profession and en-

courage internal audit education. One

of the ways in which this is accom-

plished is by awarding a scholarship to

a student of a college or university

within the local chapter’s region.

Each year, the Lansing Chapter, in an

effort to further awareness of the pro-

fession, promote student involvement

with the Chapter, and also encourage

a presence in the academia environ-

ment within our Chapter’s region,

awards a $1,000.00 scholarship to one

student.

This year, in addition to the funds, the

scholarship requires service as a junior

board member on Lansing Board of

Governors. The $1,000.00 scholarship

award will help with educational costs

while the internship on the chapter

board will provide valuable experience

working with an association board.

The internship description is on p. 12

of this newsletter and available on the

chapter website with the application.

You’re encouraged to share this infor-

mation with any potential candidates

that may be interested in this great

opportunity!

What’s in Store for 2016? Next Year’s Hiring and Salary Trends Revealed

IIA Lansing Courier • Lansing Chapter, Central Region, District 2 • October 2015 Page 6

2015 has tried the patience of finance and account-ing managers looking to hire highly skilled em-ployees, and 2016 is not likely to be much different. To succeed in recruiting and landing top talent, employers need to know what to expect so they can be competitive with incentives and compensa-tion.

The latest resource for finance and accounting hir-ing trends is hot off the presses. Here is a peek at what’s inside the 20 16 Robert Half Salary Guide for Accounting & Finance:

Business is booming. Many companies are ex-panding and launching new initiatives to generate revenue, resulting in a need for skilled accountants and business analysts. The current regulatory cli-mate with its increasingly complex mandates is also driving up demand for finance professionals with experience in financial compliance and healthcare.

Good talent is hard to find. Open finance posi-tions outnumber candidates with the necessary skills. As a result, top applicants often have multi-ple offers on the table, prompting organizations to accelerate the hiring process to increase the chanc-es of landing their top picks.

Good talent is hard to keep. Experienced fi-nance professionals are aware that the market is in their favor. They are confident about exploring other options and do not hesitate to head else-where for better pay and shinier job titles. Employ-ers often make counteroffers in an attempt to re-tain key players, although this retention strategy is usually ineffective and often backfires.

Some positions will be harder to fill than oth-ers. Though demand for most finance and ac-counting employees will continue, the 20 16 Salary Guide indicates the following professionals will be especially sought after:

Accounting managers Business, business systems and financial analysts Compliance officers Information technology auditors Internal auditors Payroll professionals Senior and staff accountants

Starting salaries continue to climb. From entry-level accountants to senior inter-nal auditors, healthy salary increases are likely in 2016. Each of the more than 400 positions listed in the 20 16 Salary Guide is expected to see base compensation rise by 4.0 to 5.3 percent. In response, some employers aren’t just matching the starting salaries offered by the competition; they’re exceeding them to attract the best candi-dates. Use our Salary Calculator to customize the going salary ranges for your city.

Companies are offering perkier perks. Besides boosting starting salaries, many firms and financial institutions are offering sign-on bonuses, merit-based raises and more. They are also enhancing non-wage perks, such as telecommuting options, extra vacation days, relocation assistance, flexible schedul-ing and tuition reimbursement.

Contract workers can cover staffing gaps. Organ-izations continue to rely on skilled contract workers to maintain productivity while searching for full-time hires. Many finance managers appreciate this flexibility, as well as the opportunity to evaluate po-tential candidates in real time on a contract-to-hire basis.

The latest hiring trends are clear: Despite wobbles in the global economy, the search for talented finance and accounting employees remains steady and com-petitive. Consult the 20 16 Salary Guide to see what’s in store for the coming year, and position yourself to meet and exceed potential recruitment and retention challenges.

A Note From the Editor

IIA Lansing Courier • Lansing Chapter, Central Region, District 2 • October 2015 Page 7

Overcoming Stigmas We are all susceptible to having preconceived ideas about a lot of things. It isn’t until we experience that very thing or have someone demonstrate some-thing contrary that our opinions start to change. We begin to understand that the nature of what we may have heard is simply not always reality. This is true for the perceptions that people have about auditors.

In a recent blog, IIA President and CEO Richard Chambers made an interesting point about the overwhelmingly misguided perception of internal auditors. Chambers noted that at the recent Financial Services Exchange, hosted at the IIA Financial Services Audit Center, a guest speaker referred to internal audi-tors “checking boxes.” As you can imagine this solicited a collective wince from the audience. Chambers re-called an experience of his own some years ago while meeting a member of the U.S. Congress who referred to auditors as ’bean counters.” Chambers replied, “We used to count the beans, but today's internal auditors are more apt to be examining how the beans are grown, how they are harvested, and how they are taken to mar-ket."

How true that is! We are not charged with only ensuring an accurate count. We add value to our organiza-tions in a multitude of ways. We help identify risks to objectives, provide guidance on the effectiveness and efficiency of operations, assist with the protection and safeguarding of assets, etc. etc. The list continues. We can provide immeasurable value to our organizations when we apply our autonomous perspective.

There lies the challenge. How do we best convince others of our value? How do we overcome the stigma of only being bean counters or worse yet, fault finders? It is only through our interactions with those we serve that we can demonstrate our true value. We are independent, objective collaborators. We can, and must, im-press upon them that we seek to make recommended improvements and provide guidance in the best inter-est of our customers, clients, members, vendors, communities, fellow employees, boards and other stake-holders.

I must confess, before I joined this insanely challenging profession, my perception of auditors was misguided. It was only after digging in and understanding the objectives and goals of the profession did I understand its true mission and value. We, as audit professionals, must demonstrate in every interaction we have with our stakeholders that we add value and are our goal is to help identify weaknesses that impact our organizations, customers, communities and the like. We must to do a better job of tearing down the preconceptions and begin building new understanding and appreciation for our roles and contributions within our organizations.

Regards,

Melanie
