90% hospitals inHyd face fire riskBALU PULIPAKA I DCHYDERABAD, AUG. 6

There are 950 hospitals, small and big, in theGHMC limits. Almostnone of them meets eventhe basic fire safetynorms required for a hos-pital building to keeptheir patients and staffsafe in the event of a fire.

A survey by the authori-ties, following the October2019 fire accident in ShineChildren’s Hospital, LBNagar, that saw the deathof a four-month old babyand burns to four othersin the neonatal ward, revealed that more than90 per cent of hospitals inthe GHMC area fared mis-erably on fire safety para-meters.

The survey followedinstructions from the gov-ernment to ensure allthese hospitals meet firesafety requirements.

“Almost every hospitalhas some deficiency or theother with respect to firesafety,” a governmentofficial said. Included inthe list of violators aresome of the biggest namesin the healthcare indus-try. “You name it, it isthere in the violators’list,” the official added.

The focus on fire safetyin hospitals yet againcame to the fore withThursday’s fire accidentin a Covid-19 designatedhospital in Ahmedabad inwhich at least eight

patients in the ICU warddied.

While the NationalBuilding Code lays downdetailed guidelines forfire prevention, suppres-sion, and rescue in theevent of a fire in a hospi-tal, these norms havebeen practically thrownto the winds in the stateand in GHMC limits, asource said. The GHMCfollows the NBC code forhospitals as well as GOMs. No. 168, dated April 7,2012, with respect to firesafety norms in hospitals.

The defence ministry onThursday pulled down adocument from its websitewhich had for the firsttime officially acknowl-edged that Chinese troopshad “transgressed” in atleast three places in Lad-akh and that the situationin the area due to “aggres-sion by China” is “sensi-tive” with the stand-offlikely to be “prolonged”.

There was no officialword on why the docu-ment, which was uploadedon Tuesday, was removedafter two days.

This comes when thefourth and fifth round ofCorps Commanders talksbetween India and Chinaseem to have been unableto achieve a breakthroughon further disengagementin Pangong Tso and otherfriction areas. Concerned that excessiveuse of computers, laptops, smartphones and tabs bychildren in lower classesfor online classes couldimpact their physical andmental health, theTelangana High Courtquestioned the govern-ment as to how it wasallowing corporateschools to hold onlineclasses for hours.

“The state governmentis informing the courtthat it is yet to take call onconducting online classes. In reality, several schoolsare conducting online

classes for hours, even upto the fifth class, andschool managments aredemanding that parentspay the fee. Unless theypay, the schools don’tallow the child to joinonline classes. How it ishappening? Is there noauthority to supervise it,”a division bench of ChiefJustice RaghavendraSingh Chauhan andJustice B. Vijaysen Reddyasked the government.

The bench was hearingPILs filed by the Hyde-rabad Parents Associa-tion and others question-ing demand for fee fromschool managments forallowing online classes.

Justice Vijaysen Reddy

expressed anguish overthe functioning of Oak-ridge and Delhi PublicSchools, which, accordingto information, were hold-ing online classes for fourto five hours with a 20-minute break.

Justice Reddy askedcounsel representing agroup of private schoolsthat are holding onlineclasses as to whether drillclasses are being held toinvolve children in physi-cal activity.

Sanjeev Kumar, specialcounsel to the govern-ment, said the stateCabinet had decided onAugust 5 to hold onlineand distance educationclasses. An official

announcement will bemade by way of a notifica-tion and a governmentorder. he said. It may notbe possible to have a uni-form time table with reg-ard to the teaching hours.

At this, Chief JusticeChauhan observed: “Onthe hand, the State saysthat an official announce-ment is yet to be out onand on the other all pri-vate schools are askingparents to cough up thefee towards online classes. Why can’t the governmentcome up with a clear deci-sion, why is it saying ‘Maybe yes or perhaps not’?This is a contradictorystatement.” The ChiefJustice said, “You cannot

have a child from Classes1 to 5 sit before a screenfor four hours continuous-ly, because the attention ofthe child of such an agegroup cannot be morethan 10 minutes. It willadversely affect the child.Perhaps, we are askingthe child to be moredisciplined than age per-mits him. Parents cannotmaintain patience for notmore than 20 minuteswith the child in the hou-se when compared to theteachers, who are patienteven after spending fivehours with the children.”

India snubs Chinafor remarks on J&KUrges Beijing not to interfere in India’s internal affairsSRIDHARKUMARASWAMI | DCNEW DELHI, AUG. 6

Hours after Chinaraised the Kashmirissue at the 15-memberUN Security Council atthe behest of its all-weather friendPakistan, India onThursday said it reject-ed China’s interferencein India’s internalaffairs, adding thatChina’s attempt onceagain “met with littlesupport from the inter-national community”.New Delhi also “urged”Beijing “to draw theproper conclusionsfrom such infructuousattempts”.

This is the secondtime in two days India criticised Chinafor its comments andactions on the Kashmirissue.

Making no secret ofthe close collaborationbetween China andPakistan, Pakistan for-eign minister ShahMahmood Qureshitweeted Wednesdaynight that this was thethird time in the pastyear that it was raisedat the UN, thankingChina “especially”,saying Pakistan “wel-comed” the meet.

The Chinese move in

collaboration withPakistan was obviouslyplanned at the UN onthe first anniversary ofIndia’s revoking

Article 370, that grant-ed special status to theerstwhile Jammu andKashmir state.

China first began

raising the Kashmirissue last year at theUNSC for informaldeliberations soonafter India revokedArticle 370.

On Thursday, theexternal affairs min-istry said: “We havenoted China initiated adiscussion in the UNSecurity Council onissues pertaining to theUnion territory ofJammu and Kashmir. This was not the firsttime China has soughtto raise a subject that issolely an internal matter of India. As onsuch occasions, thisattempt too met withlittle support from theinternational commu-nity. We firmly reject China’s interfer-ence in our internalaffairs and urge it todraw proper conclu-sions from such infruc-tuous attempts.”

India had onWednesday toosnubbed China, askingit to refrain from inter-ference in India’s inter-nal affairs, hours afterBeijing termed therevoking of Article 370a year ago by NewDelhi as “illegal andinvalid”.

India added thatChina had no locusstandi on the issue.

MP, Punjab fight over BasmatiRABINDRA NATHCHOUDHURY | DCBHOPAL, AUG. 6:

Madhya Pradesh ChiefMinister Shivraj SinghChouhan on Thursdayslammed his Punjabcounterpart Capt.Amrinder Singh formounting pressure onthe Centre to deny geo-graphical indication (GI)tagging of basmati ofMP, describing it unfair.

Chouhan said therewas no basis for oppositi-on to GI tagging of basm-ati of MP by Punjab Chief Minister since the state has ‘written record-ed history since 1908’ for production of the variantof aromatic rice in 13 dis-tricts.

“Government of Madh-ya Pradesh strongly con-demns the letter writtenby the Punjab ChiefMinister to PMO (PrimeMinister’s Office) regard-ing allotment of GI tag-ging of basmati rice of 13districts of the state”, atweet by chief minister’soffice (CMO) read.

Chouhan’s office hereran a series of tweets jus-tifying the state’s dema-nd for GI tagging of bas-mati rice grown in 13 dis-tricts of MP in the wakeof Singh shooting a letterto the PMO on Wednes-day demanding not toallow MP’s basmati to getGI tag. In his letter, Singhargued that GI tagging toMP’s basmati would notonly be detrimental to

the interest of Punjab a-nd other states who havealready been awarded GItag for their variant ofthe aromatic rice, butmay also have an adverseimpact on the export ofbasmati by India.

The Punjab Chief Min-ister said India exportsbasmati to the tune of`33,000 crore every yearand any dilution in regis-tration of Indian basmatimay give advantage toPakistan (which also pro-duces basmati) in theinternational market interms of characteristicand quality parameters.

The MP government, however, dismissed theconcern expressed bySingh, saying that GI tag-ging to the state’s bas-

mati would “provide sta-bility to basmati pricesin the international mar-kets and boost ourexport”.

“Madhya Pradesh hasrecorded history since1908 of basmati produc-tion in 13 districts. Reco-rds of supplying seeds tofarmers in MP in 1944 isrecorded in the recordsof the Scindia state”, atweet by CMO here said.

The state governmentfurther said that theIndian Institute of RiceResearch, Hyderabad, has recorded productionof basmati since the last25 years and added thatexporters from bothPunjab and Haryanahave been procuring therice variant from MP.

Don’s FB post ofkids immune toCovid-19 deletedHouston, Aug. 6: Socialmedia giant Facebook, forthe first time, has remo-ved a post from US Pre-sident Donald Trump inwhich he claimed thatchildren were “almost im-mune” to Covid-19, sayingit violated its policy aga-inst spreading “misinfor-mation” about theCoronavirus. The post inquestion was a video clipof a Trump interview onFox News Channeluploaded by the Trumpcampaign on Wednesday.

The US President claimsin the clip that childrenare “almost immune” toCovid-19. While muchremains unknown aboutthe Coronavirus, childrencan contract Covid-19 andare believed to be able tospread it to others, evenwithout symptoms.

“This video includesfalse claims that a groupof people is immune fromCovid-19 which is a viola-tion of our policies arou-nd harmful Covid misin-formation,” Andy Stone, aFacebook policy spokespe-rson said in a statement.

A link to the post nowdiverts to a page that says,“This Content Isn’t Avail-able Right Now.” It is thefirst time that Facebookhas removed a post fromTrump entirely, ratherthan labelling it, as it hasdone in the past, makingit a rare instance in whichit has been willing to cen-sor the president.

In June, Facebook remo-ved ads that the Trumpcampaign posted that fea-tured a symbol Nazis usedto classify political prison-ers during World War II.Twitter also removed alink to the same videoclip, which the officialTrump Twitter account

Links to the tweet nowpoint Twitter users to amessage that the tweetviolated Twitter’s rulesand is no longer available. The Trump campaign acc-used Facebook of “fla-grant bias”. “The Presi-dent was stating a factthat children are less sus-ceptible to the Coronavi-rus,” Courtney Parella, the campaign’s deputy na-tional press secretary, saidin an emailed statement.

Test travellers from‘risk areas’: GermanyBerlin, Aug. 6: Germanywill require people arriv-ing from countries dee-med high risk, such as theUnited States, to takeCoronavirus tests startingthis weekend, the healthminister said Thursday,as the country recordedits highest daily tally ofnew infections in threemonths. German officialshave voiced alarm over asteady upward creep inthe number of new infec-tions over recent weeks.

The national diseasecontrol centre, the RobertKoch Institute, said 1,045cases were recorded onWednesday — the firsttime since May 7 that ithas counted more than1,000 new cases in a day.

Daily figures can bevolatile or distorted bydelays in reporting, and

the number is still farshort of the peak of morethan 6,000 reached inearly April.

“What we are seeing is alot of small outbreaks,”Health Minister Jens Spa-hn told reporters. “Peopleare getting infected atfamily parties, at theirplace of work or at com-munity facilities.” On topof that, school holidays —the dates of which arestaggered across Germa-ny’s 16 states — are end-ing in some regions, incr-easing concerns that vac-ationers could bring homethe virus. Last Saturday, the government startedoffering free tests for peo-ple returning to the coun-try, a move that Spahnsaid likely contributed tothe increase in recordedcases. — AP

Lebanon officials shift blast blameas Macron calls for serious reformsBeirut, Aug. 6: Lebaneseofficials targeted in theinvestigation of the mass-ive blast that tore throughBeirut sought to shiftblame for the presence ofexplosives at the city’sport, and the visiting Fre-nch president warned Th-ursday that without serio-us reforms the countrywould “continue to sink”.

The blast Tuesday, whichappeared to have beencaused by an accidentalfire that ignited a wareho-use full of ammonium nit-rate at the city’s port, ripp-led across the Lebanesecapital, killing at least 135people, injuring morethan 5,000 and causingwidespread destruction.

It also may have acceler-ated the country’s Coron-avirus outbreak, as thou-sands flooded into hospit-als in the wake of the bla-st. Tens of thousands havebeen forced to move inwith relatives and friendsafter their homes weredamaged, further raisingthe risks of exposure.

French President Emm-anuel Macron visited Thu-rsday amid widespreadpledges of internationalaid. But Lebanon, whichwas already mired in a se-vere economic crisis, facesa daunting challenge inrebuilding.

It’s unclear how muchsupport the internationalcommunity will offer thenotoriously corrupt anddysfunctional govern-ment. Macron, whoviewed the devastatedport and was to meet withsenior Lebanese officials, said the visit is “an oppor-tunity to have a frank andchallenging dialogue withthe Lebanese political po-wers and institutions”.

He said France will workto coordinate aid. Lossesfrom the blast are estimat-ed to be between $10 bil-lion and $15 billion, BeirutGovernor Marwan Abbo-ud told Saudi-owned TVstation Al-Hadath, addingthat nearly 300,000 peopleare homeless. — AP

Washington, Aug. 6:President Donald Trumpon Wednesday continuedto suggest that the massi-ve explosion that killed atleast 135 people in Leban-on might have been adeliberate attack, even asofficials in Lebanon andhis own defence chief saidit’s believed to have be anaccident. “Whatever hap-pened, it’s terrible, butthey don’t really knowwhat it is,” Trump insist-ed. “Nobody knows yet.”

Investigators probingthe deadly blast that ripp-ed across Beirut on Tue-sday are focused on possi-ble negligence in the stor-age of tons of ammoniumnitrate, a highly explosivefertilizer, in a waterfrontwarehouse. The Lebanesegovernment ordered thehouse arrest of several

port officials. On Tuesday,Trump called the explo-sion a “terrible attack”and said American gener-als told him it was likelycaused by a bomb.

“They seem to think itwas an attack,” Trumpsaid. “It was a bomb ofsome kind, yes.” DefenceSecretary Mark Esper co-ntradicted the presidentWednesday, saying mostpeople believe the explo-sion “was an accident, asreported”. But later in theday, Trump insisted nob-ody knows for sure. “Howcan you say accident ifsomebody left some terri-ble explosive-type devicesand things around per-haps — perhaps it wasthat. Perhaps it was anattack,” Trump toldreporters during a WhiteHouse briefing. — AP

Belying expectations, theMonetary Policy Commit-tee (MPC) of the ReserveBank of India on Thurs-day kept rates unchangedon Thursday owing touncertainty around infla-tion despite signs of gro-wth faltering further. TheMPC voted to maintain anaccommodative stance, thus opening up possibili-ties for more rate cuts.

“While economic activi-ty had started to recoverfrom the lows of April-May, a surge in freshinfections have forced re-clamping of lockdowns inseveral cities and states to“level-off ” various high-frequency indicators,”RBI governor Shaktika-nta Das said in his mone-tary policy address.

The MPC expects head-line inflation to remainelevated in Q2FY21 andsees it easing in the sec-ond half of the financialyear. For 2021, the realGDP growth is expectedto be negative.

It refrained from provid-ing growth-inflation fore-casts while sticking to thedirection based guidance.

“Real GDP growth in thefirst half of the year isestimated to remain inthe contraction zone. Forthe year 2020-21 as awhole, real GDP growth isalso estimated to be nega-tive,” Das said.

He said that the RBI willdo whatever is required torevive the economy in thewake of the pandemic.

All the six members ofthe MPC voted for a statusquo in rates.

In order to provide higherliquidity to householdsand small businesses, RBIhas increased the Loan-To-Value (LTV) ratio ofgold loans offered bybanks from 75 per cent to90 per cent. However, thehigher LTV will not beavailable for non-bankingfinance companies.

As per the current guide-lines, gold loans sanc-tioned by banks for non-agricultural purposesshould not exceed 75 percent of the value of goldornaments and jewellery.

“With a view to mitigat-ing the impact of Covid-19on households, it has beendecided to increase thepermissible loan to valueratio (LTV) for such loansto 90 per cent. This relax-ation shall be available tillMarch 31, 2021,” said RBI.

Higher LTV will putmore money in the handsof the customer for thesame volume of goldpledged. Gold prices haveappreciated more than 40per cent since the begin-ning of the year. Due tothe price appreciation, theloan amount has natural-ly increased by 40 per centeven at an LTV of 75 percent. Once the LTV isincreased to 90 per cent, this will increase the loanamount by another 15 percent. This will solve theliquidity issues of smallscale business personsand traders, who accountfor the largest chunk ofthe customer base, as wellas individuals to a greatextent.

The new LTV will beavailable for a window ofeight months. Fresh loansissued post March 31, 2021will come under 75 percent LTV.

Enhancing the security ofcheque payments, RBIwill introduce PositivePay for all cheques of`50,000 and above.

As for digital payments,RBI also wants offlinepayments through cards, mobile wallets anddevices to become possi-ble for remote areas withlow internet connectivity.

In order to check incre-asing cheque frauds, RBIhas decided to introduce amechanism of PositivePay for all cheques ofvalue `50,000 and above,RBI said.

This measure will coverapproximately 20 per centof all cheques issued inthe country in volumeterms and 80 per cent ofcheques in terms ofvalue.

RBI also wants to makeoffline payment throughcards, wallets and mobiledevices possible. “Therehas been considerablegrowth in digital pay-ments using mobilephones, cards, wallets, etc. Lack of internet con-nectivity or low speed ofinternet, especially inremote areas, is a majorimpediment in adoptionof digital payments,” thecentral bank said in itsstatement.

In a major boost to start-ups, now their loans willcome under priority sec-tor lending. RBI will alsolook into regional dispar-ities in priority sectorlending (PSL).

The PSL guidelines we-re last reviewed in April2015. In these five years, the country has seen a lotof activity in the start-upspace. Acknowledgingthe potential of start-ups

in boosting the economy,RBI has broadened thescope of PSL to includestart-ups.

As per PSL norms, RBImandates banks to lend acertain portion of theirfunds to specified sectorslike agriculture, micro, small and medium enter-prises, export credit, ed-ucation, housing, socialinfrastructure, renew-able energy, etc.

Further, RBI has alsoincreased the PSL limitsfor renewable energy.

As part of reviewingthe PSL guidelines, anincentive framework isalso being put in placefor banks to address theregional disparities inthe flow of priority sec-tor credit. While higherweightage will beassigned for incrementalpriority sector credit inthe identified districtshaving lower credit flow,a lower weightage wouldbe assigned in identifieddistricts where the creditflow is higher.

A costlyoffence

Here are some companies that haveirked people by insensitive ads:

JACK AND JONES: The Danish fashion brand goton the wrong side of consumers with their cam-paign featuring actor Ranveer Singh. The adver-tisement showed Singh dressed in formal attirecarrying a woman on his shoulders, with thetagline, Don’t Hold Back, take your work home. The woman too was dressed in a small formalskirt and was shown smiling while the elevatorboy opens the door. Twitterati accused the brandof being sexist. The ad was also reported to theAdvertising Standards Council of India (ASCI). Thecompany eventually withdrew more than 11 mil-lion billboards and apologised for causing distress.

KENT RO: The water purifying giant Kent ROSystems recently found itself in a soup when itrolled out a print advertisement for a breadmaker. The advertisement posted on Instagramimplied that those employing domestic workersshould be concerned about whether they were‘infected’. The ad showed a pair of hands kneadingdough, with the caption, “Are you allowing yourmaid to knead dough by hand? Her hands may beinfected.” It led to a backlash with individuals call-ing out the ad for its discriminatory implications.Later the Chairman of Kent issued an apology forthe message, saying that it was “unintentional andwrongly communicated.”

DECCAN CHRONICLE

The advertising industry is one ofthe most dynamic and volatile sec-tors. At a time when there is wide-

spread awareness of multifarious issues, brands cannot run the risk of offendingpeople by being insensitive. With socialmedia turning into a platform for easilycalling offenders out, companies andbrands are walking a tightrope.Unfortunately, the creative team of Audilearnt this lesson the hard way.

A recent advertisement by the Germancarmaker has rubbed netizens up the

wrong way. In the image, a small girl isseen eating a banana as she leans on a redflashy Audi RS 4 Avant. The slogan reads,Let your heart beat faster — in everyaspect. The company is being criticisedfor putting the child in a provocative andlife-threatening position.

Seeing the banana as a phallic symboland the red car as an expression of malelust, a Twitter user has called the brandout, saying, “Let’s add it up: Red=eroti-cism, sports car=substitute for potency, animal print mini-skirt=sex appeal, banana=phallic symbol. But sure this isall just accidental...(sic),”

The FootballAssociation (FA) inEngland, where football

is a very popular game, recent-ly announced that coughingdeliberately while playing foot-ball will fall under the categoryof “abusive language” offenses.

Under the new COVID-19guidelines, players who delib-erately cough at opponents orreferees can now be shown redor yellow cards, although theFA further announced that ref-erees ‘should not be looking topunish players for “routine”coughing’.

Taking cue from the FAannouncement, Suneeta SodhiKanga, an etiquette expert andtrainer, wonders why the rulesmust not be adopted by thecricketing boards across theworld.

“Cricket has been called agentleman’s game for cen-turies, with players expected tokeep up their manners on andoff the field. Most cricket clubshave many rules listed aboutthe dos and don’ts pertaining tothe game,” says Suneeta whilespeaking with us over tele-phone.

The etiquette expert also believesthat a lot about etiquette and man-ners is about how a sportspersonbehaves towards others.

“On the field, it could meanrespecting the umpires and theirdecisions and countering those youdisagree with, whether the umpireor other players, in a cultured andpolite manner, without losing yourcool. Cricketers are stars for themasses and how they behave notonly displayyour cultureand gentleman-liness but alsoleave animpression inthe fans’ mindsabout what isacceptable andnot. So also, Ithink thereshould bestrong rulesagainst players using abusive lan-guage, spitting or coughing at some-one or even gesturing in a threaten-ing manner. I believe an umpireneeds to decide what is not gentle-manly,” she adds.

ETIQUETTE FOR A NON-CONTACTSPORT

Konkana Bakshi, another etiquetteexpert, believes the use of offensivelanguage especially in the heat ofthe moment, should also be discour-aged enough so it is avoided.

“Youngsters look up at cricketersas a beacon of hope. So also, insult-ing body languages, mimicking tomock another, etc. do not speak well

of the players,” Konkana says. However, Sonia Dubey Diwan,

founder and managing partner ofIndian School of ImageManagement, has a slightly differ-ent perspective to the issuance ofguidelines such as those byEngland’s FA.

“For one, I believe cricket eti-quette revolves around the aspect ofupholding the respect and fairnessof the game,” says Sonia. “Thatbeing said, traditionally, cricket hasbeen a low-contact sport, especially

when comparedwith a sportsuch as football.So instances ofd e l i b e r a t ec o u g h i n g ,which onemight some-times see as away of showa g g r e s s i o ntowards anoth-er player, may

not occur in cricket.” Given the COVID-19 scenario,

however, Sonia admits that even incricket, an additional focus needs tobe placed on the etiquette andhygiene of players and team mem-bers, both on and off the field. Thetradition of shaking hands of allteam members at the end of a gameis a well-established etiquette incricket, which is also considered agesture of good sportsmanshipspirit. But now with COVID-19 thistradition will need to be modified,as needed, keeping in mind socialdistancing and safety protocols. Infact, I expect many changes in theetiquette and hygiene practices inthe game of cricket.”

According to a Mumbai-based advertising profes-sional who chose to remain anonymous, the sloganhas added to the problem. “When you first look atthis image, it doesn’t necessarily seem offensive. Iimagine it’s the copy that highlights the sexual, even predatory undertones when it says, Let yourheart beat faster in every aspect. Simply said, it isproblematic as a concept, let alone an advertise-ment,” the professional said.

Advertising filmmaker Piyush Raghani also seesa problem with the conception and supposes mis-communication to have created the problem.

“Communication is often subjective,” he notes. Another group of netizens found the positioning

of the child in front of the car life-threatening, asthe driver would not have been able to spot the girlstanding there.

“This advertisement is open to interpretation. Alot of people will look at it differently but I under-stand why people hate it. It is just a print adver-tisement. Had it been a film, it would have been alot more hard-hitting and controversial. Butbecause it is one frame, it is open to a fair amountof interpretation,” says Piyush.

Meanwhile, Audi has issued an apology. “We sin-cerely apologise for this insensitive image andensure that it will not be used in future,” theytweeted. “We hear you and let’s get this straight. We care for children. The Audi RS 4 is a family carwith more than thirty driver assistance systemsincluding an emergency brake system. That’s whywe showcased it with various family members forthe campaign.”

DIRT ON THE GAME

Here are some instances ofcricketers using and even rec-ommending the use of spit

● In his autobiography, formerEngland batsman MarcusTrescothick has said that he usedmint-induced saliva to keep theshine on the ball as his team record-ed their first Ashes victory aftereighteen years.

“Doctor, can I use this book as a guide?”asked the to be wed Amin. The book wastitled Position a Day. “Why do you need abook?” I asked. “I want to be differenteach day and drown my wife in pleasureand ecstasy,” was the answer.

I am reminded of an audacious couplewho came to me for help after they decid-ed to play the role of a ‘gymnast and aclown’. Both were clutching their backs,

obviously in pain. They had tired onesuch position as depicted in a Khajurahotemple.

There are others who have tried to re-enact Mission Impossible-III and Matrixin their bedrooms with CollateralDamage! It’s true what they say aboutlife being a motion picture and a circus.Positions are an important ingredient ofsex. They are excitement boosters. Nodoubt about that. And it does help killthe monotony by trying out differentpositions once in a while provided boththe partners are comfortable with it.While there is no harm in trying some-thing new, one has to keep in mind what

is actually feasible in reality. A TomCruise or a Keanu Reeves stunt onscreen ought not to translate into reallife. A broken pelvis is tougher to livewith.

Can any book guarantee sexual ecsta-sy? Does pleasure depend solely on coitalpostures?

A book may boast of a million posi-tions, but technically not all of themmaybe practical. One has to exercisewisdom to gauge that. Another impor-tant point to remember is that positionsalone are not responsible for pleasureduring sex. They are just the add-ons. Aman or a woman may prefer a particular

position not necessarily because it max-imises their pleasure but because theyare both comfortable with it. There is noone position that is superior to the other.

The ability to try new exciting posi-tions will also depend on the physical fit-ness of the individuals.

By improving the muscle tone and thedexterity of the body especially in thepelvis, one can look at the odds of adven-ture. Aerobics is a great form of work-out. It strengthens and makes the mus-culature more flexible.

Only a strong hip can withstand therigors of the in and out movements. Forinspiration observe Prabhu Deva’sgyrating jhatkas in the movies.

DR D. NARAYANAREDDY

I’m distracted from mydelectable lemon-creamwafer and coffee as

Rohini says sweepingly, “Menafter marriage become unsocia-ble!” We are at our Zoom coffee-morning. Each with their ownfavourite coffee mug curled upon their couch at their ownhomes as we exchange notesthrough lockdowns and self-imposed quarantines.

My first thought is, Women arethe chatty and more mixingspecies. But on thinking andcarrying the thought aroundfor the opinions of others, itdoes seem like a rather sweep-ing generalisation. Of course, itis about individual personalitytraits, but from the looks of it, itseems to be the experience ofmany of the friends among thetwenty-odd friends chattinghere at our virtual soirée. Couldit be that many women feel soentrenched in marriage thateverything else beyond the newhome and hearth and husbandfade into a distance in the mind-space? I believe it might bemore a ‘marriage syndrome’.

HONEYMOON ENDS, BONHOMIEDOESN’T

Romance of the together-for-ever bond already has the cou-ple probably waltzing throughjust on their own twosome, as ifalone on life’s dance floors.

Added to which many of us,men and women, get soimmersed in the new role andenthusiasm and responsibilityof a new relationship and evenmarriage that we get negligentabout what appears to be intru-sions in the new paradise.

All well during the honey-moon, I guess, but the outcomein the longer picture is that theman or the woman may findthemselves quite alone withoutthe companionable cronies, foran after-work snack or theelevenses exchange of confi-dences and the stimulating gos-sip that so extends ones naturalneed for social bonds as well asthose enriching friendly visits. And as matters settle and thenewness begins to settle into aneveryday routine, humannature is apt to look for compa-

ny outside, a laugh, a drink, amovie and a little space outsidematrimony.

Then, one fine day, the personrealises that friends and rela-tives have moved on by the timeyou are ready to re-enter theworld. The easy familiarity isnot something that distanceencouraged and there is awk-wardness in resuming ties, if atall.

The lesson is obvious—friend-ships and relationships almostnever thrive bereft of nurture, contact and bonhomousexchanges. Also, the apprecia-tion of a people that you vibewith and enjoyed the companyof is almost always essential tokeep the warmth of friendshipglowing. Bonds of synchronici-ty are not easy to find. A schooland college ambience was the

right ambience for friends whowere like soul mates to bealways around and, perhapswhy, the best friendships flow-ered there. You enjoyed thesame music and reached out foreach other through thick andthin. In came a love angle witha new someone and you beganto neglect your soul mates andbuddies, and you probablyended up losing that specialsomething. Your friends andsoul mates feel neglected andcast away.

COUNTING YOUR BLESSINGSAND FRIENDS

The value of friends and con-stant meetings—nurturing thegentle warm flames—is thusrealised only in these times, perhaps after marriage hassunk into its own level, leaving

a vacant space. A space that canonly be enjoyed with friends, with whom you laughed andcried. Those moments that onecannot relive even with the all-important spouse whose spaceis secure but a little in its ownniche. The soul mate and bud-dies hold a special place oftheir own.

The proliferation of kitty par-ties (a phrase I abhor and a con-cept I always had some distastefor), in my more tolerantmoments, is also just about try-ing to recapture the bonds ofclose interaction and laughter, and sharing a meal. This maywork for some or many—differ-ent strokes for different folks.

It is perhaps important torealise that bonds of friendshiphave a special place of theirown, which offer succour andencouragement, and offer yourespite and comfort througheven relationship hiccups. Wemust give all our relationshipstheir special place, not ignor-ing or neglecting those whohave been special through ourgrowing years. You don’t comeby loyal and dedicated friendseasily, and giving them upthoughtlessly—assuming theywill be hanging around afteryou’ve had your fill of a newromance—is not wise. Friendsand your new love must coex-ist, and if your newfound part-ner is really well adjusted andnot a controlling person, hewill be accepting and even wel-coming of your earlier friend-ships.

One of the toughesttopics in declarer-play is the danger

hand. As you can guess, that is the theme oftoday's deal. South is inthree no-trump. AfterWest leads his fourth-highest spade, whatshould declarer do if Easteither plays the queen, orwins with the ace andreturns the spade nine?

South starts with seventop tricks: one spade, oneheart, four diamonds andone club. He can generateextra tricks in the round-ed suits, but whichfinesse should he try?

First, let us consider thesituation when East playsthe spade queen. AfterSouth takes the trick withthe spade king, who is thedanger hand?

Right -- East. If he getsin, he will lead a spadethrough declarer's jack.

So South should cross tothe dummy with a dia-mond and take the heartfinesse. Even though thefinesse loses, West cannothurt South. If Westswitches to a club, declar-er wins with the ace andclaims his nine tricks:one spade, three hearts, four diamonds and oneclub.

What happens whenEast wins trick one withthe spade ace and returnsa spade? If South winswith the king and takes alosing rounded-suitfinesse, the opponentsmay be able to cashenough spade tricks todefeat him. Instead, declarer plays the spadejack and takes the thirdround with his king. Nowhe must keep West off thelead. South runs the clubjack. Yes, that finesse alsoloses, but when East

shifts to a heart, declarerwins with his ace and has10 tricks: one spade, oneheart, four diamonds andfour clubs.

Kriti Sanon’s name hascropped up yet again as one of

the possibilities opposite HrithikRoshan. She is being touted as one of

the two girls in the fourth installmentof Hrithik’s Krrish. Although there is no

official announcement being made to con-firm the report. But informed sources say, “She is being

strongly considered for one of the roles.”The first time her name came up as a possi-

ble pair for Hrithik was in 2018 when Krrish 4was being planned, before Rakesh Roshan fell

ill.Kriti had made multiple visits to the Roshan

office at Juhu at that time.“The next time Kriti was suggested as Hrithik’s pair

was in Farah Khan’s remake of Satte Pe Satta. ButHrithik unfortunately did not give his nod for the film, which still does not have a lead cast. This is the thirdtime we are hearing of the likelihood of the two ofthem acting together and this buzz seems to be ratherstrong,” adds our source.

Kriti’s next release will be the Laxman Utekar’sfilm Mimi with producer Dinesh Vijan.
