Soul Patrol is a unique entity in the wide world of “DOT COM’S”. Yes it is 100% Black owned”, yet there is much more behind that simple statement of fact then. It started with a very simple idea, to simply run a web site that the two of them would manage, with Mike handling all of the back end technical stuff and Bob handling all of the web page construction, mailing list moderation and marketing. We have been involved in the Data Processing Industry for over 20 years as a Project Manager, Systems Analyst, Systems Architect, Strategic Planner, Methodologist and Systems Integrator, for many of the largest companies on the Fortune 500 map.

It is Soul Patrol’s ownership of BOTH it’s content and technology infrastructure that makes it unique. Most sites own and manage their own content. NOBODY (except for us) is CRAZY enough to undertake managing the underlying technology infrastructure (servers, telecommunications links and programming) that makes the presentation of the content possible.

Because of our long experience in the world of Data Processing, Mike and I feel that it’s an ABSOLUTE REQUIREMENT to use state of the art technology (hardware and software) components, and that is what we have purchased for the site. We also have developed a state of the art & flexible architecture to deploy those components. This is what gives us the capability to do certain things (such as providing access to a tremendous online data base, provisioning an internet radio station, bi-monthly newsletter, a monthly magazine, etc) and provisioning of various online and offline technical support services that are far beyond that of most web sites!

So here is the order that we went in...

• Bradley Alston - Panel Discussion: Blues 2003 • Harry Weinger (Motown/UME) Marvin Gaye In The 70's • (Moderator: Kevin Amos) - Panel Discussion: Preserving Black Music History w/ Rick

Wilson (Mandrill), Darrell McNeill (BRC), Nina-Dawne Williams (Open Up My Heart Foundation)

• Panel Discussion Black Rock Coalition - Panel Discussion LaRonda Davis, • Darrell McNeill, Robert Clark (BRC) • Ken Webb - Internet Radio and the Future • (Moderator: Lawrence Perry) Panel Discussion: Independent Artists & the • Future w/Shel Riser (SonnyBoy), Cliff Perkins (Soul Generation), Daryl Moon • (theFunkstore.com) and Eddie Bowman (AG Music magazine)

Also please note that a few of the participants changed from the original line up due to the context. Let me just say this...These sessions were THA BOMB!!!!!!!!!!!

Panel Discussion: Preserving Black Music History (Moderator: Kevin Amos) - w/ Rick

Wilson (Mandrill), Darrell McNeill (BRC), Nina-Dawne Williams (Open Up My Heart Foundation)

People (including yours truly) walked away with the feeling that something of value had truly been accomplished with these sessions. It was a cross-generational crowd of about 75 people in attendance, with some excellent intergenerational give and take... . There was quite a bit of spirited dialogue across the table and between the participants & the audience. We just flat ran out of time due to the late start. However I would suggest that it is of vital importance that we continue these discussions here on the internet, nurture each other towards defining the specific action plans that will help to define just how we are to proceed going forward.

My sense is that we took some serious steps toward achieving the type of unity among various entities that is going to carry us forward, and make us stronger for the battles, which lie ahead. And make NO MISTAKE ABOUT IT...(It is indeed going to be a battle) The lines are pretty clearly drawn. Count on Soul-Patrol to do it's part to facilitate and be pro-active on these fronts, going forward... I'll make some postings later and discuss some of the specifics of each discussion... (Right now I'm whipped....lol) --Bob Davis

Subject: Soul-Patrol: SP Convention: Evening Program (Post Mortem) Well what can I say... I don't think there was ANYONE who walked out of the joint last night who was disappointed. We got off to a late start, because the afternoon program ran over. So we didn't get started till around 9pm. We had close to 300 Soul-Patrollers in attendance from as close as Burlington County and as far away as California. (From sea to shining sea.....lol)

The legendary EBONY’S performing during the 2003 Soul-Patrol East Coast Convention

Evening Program Here are a few highlights for me...

• The Persuaders singing, "House is Not a Home" and "Thin Line Between Love and Hate". • Billy Paul singing "Me and Mrs Jones". • The Legendary Escorts singing "Lets Make Love at Home". • The world premiere of Ebony's singing one of their new joints (I can't remember the name

of it)

• A special presentation to Ric Wilson (mandrill) and Will Hart (Delphonics) for their special role in the history of Soul-Patrol

• Mr. Raoul Cita (one of Rock n' Roll's originators) meeting the brain trust of the Black Rock Coalition

• Presentation of Awards to all of the artists in attendance • A reunion for many of the Classic Soul Legends in attendance

A few moments to remember....

• When "Atomic Dog" was played, Michael Hampton confessing that he will have to practice his dancing for next years Convention, since he can't dance.

• Norman Donegan (of the AD LIBS) constantly screaming out for Will Chill to play "Boy From NYC"

• Yours truly correctly answering one of the trivia questions (and being denied the prize) • Some brotha who did a split so dammed hard that it hurt me just to watch. • Some truly NASTY GRINDING going on :) • Harry Weinger jamming to James Brown • The announcement of Bettye Lavette & Kevin Kiley's marriage (our first Soul-Patrol

wedding) • That super duper "Black Hippie" type suit that Funkafize was wearing (I simply must get

one EXACTLY like it...) Thanks to our DJ's (Kevin Amos, Giant Gene and Will Chill) did a great job of keeping the crowd moving all night long, in between the live performances and speeches.

Soul-Patrollers from across the country and around the world JAMMING!!!!

Thanks to John Rozz for providing outstanding technical support during both the afternoon and evening programs. Got to meet a whole bunch of folks that I have only known via the Internet and that is always a treat for me. Of course there is more (much more)

(Oh.... and PJ & Betty Jo said they danced their azzes off.....lol) --Bob Davis

Soul-Patrol East Coast Convention Artists and Special Guests Walk over and introduce yourselves to our special guests, they are all members of Soul-Patrol. Ask them about their latest CD, tour or special project. Also ask them about their role as direct participants in one of the greatest cultural/social periods in American history…

“We not only sing, but we dance just as good as we want to….”

Soul-Patroller Mike Boone meeting Soul-Patroller Cliff Perkins from Soul Generation

Billy Paul The amazing Mr. Paul began getting national recognition as a young man, and soon appeared in concert with such artists as Charlie Parker, Dinah Washington, Nina Simone, Miles Davis, the Impressions, Sammy Davis and Roberta Flack. Nancy Wilson was so impressed with a track off his debut album that she recorded it herself.

Billy formed a trio and cut his first record, "Why Am I" for Jubilee Records before being drafted into the Armed Services. After his release from the service came a quick stop at the New Dawn Label, and a brief stand in for one of the Blue Notes with Harold Melvin. His first Philly album, "Feeling Good At The Cadillac Club" combined Billy Paul and Gamble/Huff produced tunes, and was released on the Gamble Label. This jazz L.P. was followed by one more commercial release "Ebony Woman", released on the Gamble & Huff Neptune label. Still later, Going East, Billy's first album released on the Philadelphia International Label, set him further into the commercial groove. However, it was with his second album that everything broke loose in his career. 360 Degrees Of Billy Paul with the ensuing single "Me And Mrs. Jones" selling over two million copies alone, placed Billy's name on the lips of every couple in love. The gold album and platinum single broke the artist on world charts, including Britain where the single entered the top five.

"Me And Mrs. Jones" went on to win Billy the coveted Grammy Award. In addition to receiving the Grammy, Billy Paul has won multiple Ebby awards (given by the readers of Ebony magazine); has been the recipient of the American Music Award, the NAACP Image Award and numerous proclamations and keys to cities across the United States. He's toured internationally with overwhelming response in the United Kingdom, South America and Latin America. I know that all of you "old heads" out there remember Billy all too well from his 1973 GRAMMY AWARD WINNING smash hit song..."Me and Mrs. Jones". Billy and his wife have been a member of our family here on Soul-Patrol for quite a while, sharing their knowledge with all of us and taking in ALL of the conversation that has been taking place on Soul-Patrol. When I first met with them several years ago at their home here right outside of Philadelphia, they welcomed me as if I were a long lost family member. You all can't imagine how that made me feel....:) http://www.phillysounds.com

Dr. Ricardo ‘Doc Wilson (Mandrill) MANDRILL…. a sunburst of musical energy that defies category, continues to thrill sold-out

audiences all over the world. Most recently, on July 19, 2002 they rocked the house in Stravinsky Hall at the renowned Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland. Climaxing a week of performances by such notables as Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter and David Bowie, Mandrill delivered a tidal wave of music the Montreux audience will not soon forget. Look for a “Mandrill: Live From Montreux” CD in the very near future. On August 19,2002, Mandrill brought the Summer Unity Festival in Philadelphia to a funky finale. A sold out audience of more than 15,000 overflowed the Dell East to see the headliner, Mandrill & special guest, War.

These shows are reminiscent of many of the impressive highlights of Mandrill’s career over the past three decades. They have headlined RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C. (eclipsing an attendance record set by the Rolling Stones), the World Jazz Festival in Morocco (featuring such jazz greats Dexter Gordon, Max Roach, Randy Weston and Hubert Laws) and multiple “sold out” performances at prestigious New York City venues including Carnegie Hall, Philharmonic Hall and the Apollo Theater. Mandrill has shared the stage with celebrated artists like Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, James Brown, The Fania All Stars, Tito Puente, George Clinton & the Funkadelics, Patti Labelle, Chaka Kahn, Earth Wind & Fire, Deep Purple, The Eagles, Jim Croce, Ike & Tina Turner and the list goes on. Always socially conscious, Mandrill participated in a platinum album for the United Nations that raised funds for international refugees. The group is currently involved in a campaign that highlights the plight of it’s namesake, the mandrill (west African baboon), which has been classified as an endangered species.

In 2002, Mandrill also created an eclectic film score for the soon-to-be-released movie “Civil Brand.” A Lions Gate Entertainment (“Monster’s Ball”) production, “Civil Brand” is the riveting story of young Black women fighting abuse and exploitation in the private prison system and features platinum-selling rappers Mos Def, Da Brat and MC Lite. The score stands along with Mandrill’s movie soundtracks of “The Greatest” (Columbia Pictures biopic of Muhammad Ali) and Paramount Pictures cult classic “The Warriors.” The Wilson Brothers, founding members and creative core of Mandrill were born in Panama (the cultural melting pot of the Caribbean) and moved to Brooklyn, New York. Their broad base of musical and cultural experience has fueled 16 albums that include the smash hits “Fencewalk,” “Git It All,” “Hang Loose,” “Polk Street Carnival,” “Ape Is High” and others. Riding on a soulful and funky groove, Mandrill’s positive lyrics lift audiences physically and spiritually. The group will soon release a beautiful ballad CD “Love Songs”, featuring the hit “Sunshine”. Also, Mandrill’s long awaited funk and world music CD will be available at www.mandrillis.com.

More potent than ever, Mandrill Magic is touching a new generation . . . Check it out! http://www.mandrillis.com

Ray, Goodman and Brown (aka The Moments) The performing longevity is remarkable, but check the singles this group, a.k.a. THE MOMENTS, has collected. Ever since 1969's "Not On The Outside But Inside Strong", they have charted consistently with classics like "Look At Me I'm In Love", "Love On A Two Way Street", (covered by Stacy Latisaw), "With You", "Happy Anniversary", and "Special Lady", one of B.M.I.'s most performed songs of 1980.

Warm in a non-threatening way, they have the ability to hit a fella's soft spot and to make women feel comfortable. Billy Brown's flexible tenor can easily catch a female off guard, making her easy prey for the "let's -get-it-on' lyric. Billy Brown was also a member of a group called the Broadway's. He sang lead on THE MOMENTS hits as before mentioned. Such as; "Love On A Two Way Street", "Sunday", "Lovely Way She Loves", "Lucky Me", "I Do", "Inside Of You", and "All I Have". Al Goodman was a former member of the Corvettes and the Vipers. After joining the Moments, Al Goodman went on to become one of the major writers and producers for the group and many other artists. "Look At Me I'm In Love," "Sexy Mama", "Inside Of You" and "Happy Anniversary", are just a few of the songs he produced and wrote. Before the untimely death of Mr. Harry Ray, he had been with the group for 25 years with a brief interruption in 1982 when he pursued a solo career. Al Goodman and Billy Brown, who own the name "Ray, Goodman, and Brown", reinstated Kevin Owens to replace Harry Ray upon his untimely death. Kevin was lead vocalist in 1982 for Ray, Goodman, and Brown when Ray embarked on a solo career. In 1984 Kevin recorded the Album "Who's Gonna Make The First Move". Kevin also sings background for Luther Vandross when not appearing with Ray, Goodman, and Brown. http://www.raygoodmanandbrown.net

After Philadelphia International Records signed Beasley and The Ebonys to their first recording contract in 1974, the Philadelphia sensations went on to release two albums, one of which reached the top of the pop charts. With such great hits as "It's Forever", "I Believe" and "Determination", The Ebonys made their mark on the music world. Even today, the love for their hits remains strong. And now David Beasley and the new Ebonys are ready to slam the 90s with a dose of the great hits that made them famous and a host of new releases that promise to soar to the top of the charts.

Raoul Cita (Harptones) The arranger, writer, and manager for the group is the founder of the group. He has written many of the Harptones songs like "Life is but a Dream," My Memories of You," "That's the Way it Goes," and "Three Wishes." He has managed to keep the group going together for these many years. Cita is their accompanist with the piano in personal appearances, and sings an occasional bass. http://www.theoriginal-harptones.com/

Vince Montana (MFSB & SalSoul Orchestra)

I am a very devoted fan of Philly soul more than any other sound I’ve come across. Those MFSB musicians made magic. Vince Montana is man!!! What he and others created at Philly International and SalSoul was history in the making and defined an era. Vince Montana can be found on a great album that came out about four years ago called Nuyorican Soul (aka Kenny Dope & Louie Vega) It contains a huge host of legends incl. Roy Ayers, George Benson etc. Ironically, it also contains a remake of a Rotary Connection tune (ie Minnie Riperton) called "Black Gold Star of the Sun". Vince has a couple of great solo albums (that I am a proud owner of) released on Atlantic in the mid 70's. http://members.aol.com/vmontanajr

Cliff Perkins (Soul Generation) Cliff Perkins the leader of the Classic Slow Jam group, Soul Generation has been a member of the Soul Patrol Mailing List since the first six months of our existence and during that time he has been a good friend to us. One of the things that Cliff does as he performs around the country is to always mention Soul Patrol when he is interviewed. As such he is a real ambassador for the past, present and future of the music. Here is a little bit of trivia (that really isn’t so trivial). I'm certain most of yall remember Soul Generation's two BIG MILLION SELLING hit songs: "Million Dollars", "Body and Soul". Remember, they were on a label called "Ebony Sounds"? Guess who owned the "Ebony Sounds" label? (Cliff Perkins) Cliff recently told me that these two songs were independently produced after having been rejected by the major labels. The fact is, that Cliff Perkins has ALWAYS been a practitioner of the PRINCE BUSINESS MODEL!!!!!! http://www.soulgeneration.net

Will Hart (Delphonics) Will Hart was one of the FIRST members of Soul-Patrol and of course he & his family will be at our East Coast Convention. He was also one of the very first SPONSORS of Soul-Patrol. We probably wouldn't even be here having this discussion if it weren't for Will Hart! He is a man who understands the importance of an entity like Soul-Patrol and why it is important for us to have a forum where we can talk about these kind of issues online. * He also understands why it's even more important why we now begin to take things to the next level and extend the fellowship, camaraderie and discourse offline as well. Got questions about the Delfonics/Delphonics?

Those of you who attend the East Coast Soul-Patrol Convention will get a chance to meet Will Hart and get your answers... NP: "Hey Love" -- Delfonics (written by Will Hart) http://www.soul-patrol.com/funk/delfonic.htm

Bernie Worrell (Parliament-Funkadelic, Talking Heads, W00 Warriors) It was Bernie Worrell's work as a founding member and Musical Director of the massively influential super group Parliament-Funkadelic that sealed the induction of this genius of a musician into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame in 1997. Yet it's intriguing to consider that Worrell's numerous other stellar collaborations - most notably as a member of Talking Heads - could, in fact, place him in the hallowed Hall several times over. In April 2002, Worrell was reunited with Talking Heads in New York when the band received their own Hall of Fame induction. With Worrell back in place behind a bank of keyboards on the stage of Radio City Music Hall, the Heads performed show-stopping renditions of their classic songs Burning Down The House (Worrell's synthesizer work gave this remarkable Top 20 hit its definitive eerie quality) and Life During Wartime. With Parliament-Funkadelic, Worrell co-wrote, co-produced, recorded and performed most of the group's compositions - classics Flashlight, Atomic Dog, Knee Deep, Cosmic Slop and Red Hot Mama, to name just a few - on its 50-plus albums and globe-spanning tours. These songs - and many more with Worrell's consummate musical licks - continue to remain popular, he is one of the most sampled musicians in history. http://www.berrnieworell.com

Michael Henderson QUESTION: > I have a question for the SP musicologists, is the > Michael Henderson that plays bass on Miles "Tribute > To Jack Johnson" the same M.H. that sings "You are my > Starship"? And "Be my Girl"? ANSWER: Yes Did you ever hear Michael Henderson while he was a part of the Miles Davis band? He was ultrafunky.....especially on the album "On The Corner". However he never got much due as a bass player due to his later success as a "balladeer", including MONSTER DUETS with the likes of Phyllis Hyman and Jean Carne! Michael Henderson provided the thumpin bass sounds as a part of Miles Davis early to mid 70's band. Check him out on the albums "Big Fun", "Agartha", "Dark Magus", "On The Corner" and more. Of course none of us realized at that time that he was also a fine singer as he proved later in the decade with several hit records such a "You Are My Starship" with (Norman Connors) and solo with songs like "Be My Girl", "Wide Receiver" http://www.soul-patrol.com/jazz/henderson.htm

Sarah Dash (Labelle) Sarah has been singing all of her life. Born the seventh of thirteen (13) children, Sarah began singing in The Trenton Church of Christ, Young Peoples Choir, in Trenton, New Jersey. In her pre-teen years, Sarah turned to secular music, began performing with her schoolmates, and formed, a group called "The Del Capri's"' in which Nona Hendryx was also a member. They auditioned for a manager in Philadelphia named Montague and did a few talent and local shows around the Trenton area. When some of the Del Capri's no longer showed the dream as Nona and Sarah their manager put them together with two other girls, Cindy Birdsong and Patricia Holte and called them "The Blue Bells". Because was another group in the artist union with that name, the record company president re-named the group as, "Patti La Belie and The Blue Bells." They rolled out with the hit song, "I Sold My Heart to the Junkman," that bought them national and international attention. Feeling that they needed a change, Sarah contacted Vicki Wickham, a British television producer of "Ready Steady Go." Ms. Wickham along with the managers of the legendary Pete Townsend's group "The Who" took them to England where they did a complete change with image and style of

singing approach as no black female singing group had ever done. After living in London for nearly a year, they hit the American audiences with a new look and new name "LABELLE." Now Vicki Wickham was their sole manager. Overnight, the group rose in popularity in the pop music world with their individual sleek space age inspired costumes, and cutting edge sultry songs' of lust and desire, with strong political messages. Their cross over album "Night Birds," on the Epic label sold to gold album status. The gold record single, "Lady Marmalade, "placed them among the top pop groups in the world; in the six years, that Labelle crissed crossed the globe in concert. Making history again, Labelle was the first black female group to perform at the world famous "METROPOLITAN OPERA HOUSE" at Lincoln Center in New York City. Ray Davis (P-Funk, Temptations, Zapp, Original P) Let me say this about "Bro Ray" I had the chance to meet him at the Original P show at BB King's in NYC last summer. Not only is he one of the GREATEST singers that we have on the scene, but he is also an awfully nice person. He's also a big fan of Soul Patrol. I'm a big fan, got a chance to holler at the brother and some of his co-horts at a P Funk show held here in Chicago about 2 years ago. he added some beautiful bottom to the best Temptation album in some time, I'm sure you know the one, Some Enchanted Evening, I'm so Glad, What A Difference A day makes, I liken it to their Mellow Mood LP. Ray said he had always wanted to be a Tempt and his wish came true this was Melvins last album as a Temptation and Ray did an excellent job. He is a good brother Theo, Melvin, Ray, Otis, Ron & Ali Woodson The Fuji Island mix and the acapella version of Some Enchanted evening were monsters. http://www.originalpfunk.com

Jazzhole Circle of the Sun, Jazzhole’s fourth studio recording, finds founding members Warren Rosenstein, John Pondel and Marlon Saunders exploring the new hybridity of modern urban soul: a sound that incorporates downtempo grooves and acoustic R&B, with hints of ambient electronica and bossa nova. As much a neo-soul as a nu-jazz release, Circle of the Sun benefits from performances by several new guests: tabla player Naren Budhakar; vocalist and Cameroon-native Kaïssa Doumbè (Manu Dibango, Jean-Michel Jarre, Salif Keita); and percussion star Daniel Sadownick (Me’Shell Ndegeocello, Maxwell, Screaming Headless Torsos). Refreshingly, Jazzhole remains an evolving collective of many of New York’s most accomplished live and studio musicians.

While Jazzhole’s roster has changed since their 1994 self-titled debut, the band’s core—songwriting and production trio Marlon Saunders, Warren Rosenstein and John Pondel—has not. Marlon Saunders provides much of Jazzhole’s signature soulful sound. Raised in Maryland on a diet of church singing, Saunders has recorded with legends such as Bobby McFerrin, Michael Jackson and Sting. John Pondel’s emotive guitar playing on songs such as “A Love Thing” and “Superstar”, draws on his many live and recorded performances with artists such as Gerald Wilson, Diane Schurr and Carmen McRae. John also comprises half of Verve’s smooth jazz duo, Kombo. and was a founding member of the critically-acclaimed Uncle Festive (Mesa/Blue Moon). In additional to writing, producing and engineering, Brooklyn-born Warren Rosenstein contributes rhodes and drum programming to Circle of the Sun. In the early 1990s, while working on seminal acid jazz tracks “Hot Music” (Soho) and “Jazz it Up” (CFM Band), Rosenstein drew from the rich pool of talent that was hovering around Context Studios on Manhattan’s Lower East Side to form Jazzhole, pulling in rappers KCB (US3), Ahmed Best (Stomp), Jack Ruby, Jr. (The Toasters), as well as vocalists Ronnie & Rosa Russ, and Michelle Lewis for their 1994 debut album on Mesa/Blue Moon. A summer of jamming in the studio, with musicians like bassist Scott Colley (Jim Hall, Greg Osby) and saxophonist David Binney (Lost Tribe, Medeski, Martin & Wood) resulted in the eponymous debut album, hailed by Music Retailing as “the coolest thing since US3 and the Brand New Heavies” and Rolling Stone as “the most danceable of all the new-groove groups”. This recording showcased the trumpet playing of Kevin DiSimone on the acid jazz classic “Forward Motion”. Released in 2000, Blackburst marked a change in direction for Jazzhole. Blackburst saw the group mixing elements of electronica and chillout with their soul roots, and moving away from acid jazz and hip-hop. These changes were well-received by fans and press alike. Billboard reported: “Blackburst is filled with luscious grooves and intense rhythms… Saunders and Russ lay down sensuous riffs, perfect for late nights with that special someone.” BRE added: “A yummy collection of jazz-influenced tunes that inspire lust, laughter and lounging.” For Circle of the Sun, Rosenstein enlisted the talents of many new players: vocalist Kaïssa Doumbè delivers a melodic soft-soul rendition of Leon Russell’s “Superstar” in Duala, her native language, and contributes lead vocals on two other tracks; Naren Budhakar’s tabla colors several tracks, particularly the warm, organic cover of Depeche Mode’s “Enjoy the Silence”; percussionist Daniel Sadownick anchors the vibe with congas, udu, and bongos, helping create the Bossa flavor of tracks like “Circle of the Sun”. http://www.jazzhole.com

The Ad Libs The Ad Libs were an early-'60s vocal group from New Jersey whose female lead vocals and male-voiced backing prefigured the jazzy doo wop singing style of several later groups, including

Manhattan Transfer. They scored a major hit in early 1965 with "The Boy From New York City," written by John T. Taylor, a saxophone player who had worked with various big band groups as far back as the '30s. By the early '60s, John T. Taylor had quit playing music and had turned his attention to teaching. During this time, he heard a young Hudson County quintet, who was calling themselves the Creators. The group consisted of Hugh Harris, Danny Austin, James Wright, John Alan, and Chris Coles.

By mid-1963, the Creators had released their first record on the TR label without any chart success. A single for the Phillips label, "I'll Stay Home," met the same fate a year later. The group re-formed in 1964 in Newark, NJ. Dave Watt and Norman Doegan replaced departing members Wright, Alan, and Coles, and they added a female lead vocalist, Mary Ann Thomas. A new name was needed, and thereafter they began calling themselves the Ad Libs. By now, Taylor's jazz-inflected songwriting along with the Ad Libs' natural harmonies created a sound like no other group. This was best personified on the upbeat piano-driven bounce rhythm of Taylor's first demo with the group, "The Boy From New York City." http://www.soul-patrol.com/soul/adlibs.htm

The Legendary Escorts For about a year or so, I thought was the BADDEST SLOW JAM GROUP OF ALL... They made 2 Classic albums in the mid 1970's that were absolutely HUGE at Basement parties that I went to in NYC at that time.

Interestingly enough, most of their songs are "covers", however some of those "covers" are better than the originals. Take for example, the Escorts version of "Ooh Baby Baby" (It's BETTER than Smokey's in my opinion!!!!!) These are the kind of albums that if they came on at a party, you could count on them playing the whole side and the lights would go out :) They made two classic albums back in the 1970's "All We Need Is Another

Chance" and "3 Down 4 To Go". If you haven't heard of them before and you are a lover of

T.M. Stevens As a recording artist, T.M. has released 4 albums. 'Boom', 'Sticky Wicked' 'Radioactive' and 'Shocka Zooloo' . The first, released in '95, the second in '97 on the Polystar/Polygram label. Radioctive ('99) and the newest 'Shocka Zooloo' (2001) were released on the JVC Victor label. All written, produced and performed by T.M. T.M. has been involved with various big artists, such as Joe Cocker, ("Unchain My Heart", "One Night Of Sins", "Nightcalls"), Little Steven ("Freedom - no compromise"), Tina Turner ("Foreign Affairs"), Billy Squier ("Enough Is Enough"), James Brown ("Gravity"), Billy Joel ("River Of Dreams") andSteve Vai for his "Sex and Religion" album. (See Discography, Concert, Video and TV-Show list.) T.M. calls his music Heavy Metal Funk, which is the blend of his roots music. Here is the quotation from his liner notes for the album "BOOM", about H.M.F.: As an artist, to draw from what these pioneers had started and then be able to add my own ideas to make a sound that's unique to me , is not only a privilege but also an honor. I find that contrary to the marketing strategies of separating the various musics into different categories; combining the elements of many styles creates new music. We are the entire sum total of our ancestors (roots) on through our past to the present. Hence by playing, without "over thinking" what I naturally feel, the sound will be more original and real... Bettye Lavette Bettye LaVette was born in Muskegon, Michigan in 1946. She gained her first professional experience as part of the touring review run by soul singers Don Gardner and Dee Dee Ford in the early 1960s. Her passionate vocal style won her a solo contract with Atlantic Records, where she adopted her stage name for the 1962 R&B hit 'My Man - He's A Loving Man', one of the finest early examples of southern soul. However, she was unable to build on this success, and only made sporadic recordings with small labels during the rest of the decade. The Spencer Davis Group later covered her torch ballad ‘Let Me Down Easy’ was an R&B hit in 1965, written by country ‘rebels’ Jim and Tompall Glaser, the song. LaVette recorded material by other country writers, and her version of Mickey Newbury 's 'Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)' in 1969 was later picked up by Kenny Rogers. She enjoyed two further chart successes in 1969-70 with country/soul recordings on Lelan Rogers' Silver Fox label, most notably with the superb, if risqué, 'He Made A Woman Out Of

Me', turned into a pop release for Bobbie Gentry.

The mid- to late 70s saw singles on Epic and a disco-influenced outing for West End, while LaVette also starred in the Broadway musical Bubbling Brown Sugar. In the early 80s, renewed interest in her early recordings led to her being offered a contract with Motown. There she recorded the acclaimed Tell Me A Lie; one of the label's few ventures into southern soul. Besides the R&B hit 'Right In The Middle Of Falling in Love', the album included impressive remakes of 'I Heard It Through The Grapevine' and 'If I Were Your Woman'. LaVette remains a cult figure among soul fans in the UK, and many of her 60s recordings have been reissued in recent years. In 1992 she recorded two singles and Not Gonna Happen Twice on Ian Levine's Motor City label. http://www.bettyelavette.com

Michael Hampton

Michael Hampton was the guitarist for the band Funkadelic after original guitarist Eddie Hazel departed to join the Temptations on 1975. Like Hazel, Hampton was recruited as a seventeen-year-old guitar prodigy. Michael Hampton is a legend, trained from the maggot brain school of funk, and it shows here-mike has been around since 1974 playing with p-funk-check out hardcore jollies, one nation under a groove CD and knee deep, and you'll learn mike ain't no

joke. Mr. Hampton is underrated which is a shame. but the whole CD is funk acid rock at it's best. Mike just blazes the guitar in solo after solo, his mentor George Clinton even stops by and puts his 2 cents in. this is how p-funk should have sounded all along but was never given the chance, so if any funkateers like Mike on hardcore joolies, knee deep, lunchmeataphobia, funk get ready to roll, who says a funk band can't play rock. this is definitely for you. http://www.thefunkstore.com/RawFunkDVDs.htm

In July of 1971 Ken became the very first radio ‘morning man’ for Inner City Broadcasting’s flagship station, WBLS-FM (NYC).By 1983, Ken had raised WBLS-FM morning ratings to the #1 position becoming a household name in the city. The he moved to RKO Broadcasting’s WRKS-FM and brought it’s morning ratings to the #1 position for the very first time in that station’s history, where it remained until 1995 when he returned to WBLS. Ken has been consistently in demand to serve as Master of Ceremonies for numerous major concerts on local, national and international stages. Outside the US mainland, Ken has served as master of ceremonies for events and concerts in the US Virgin Islands, Japan, Mexico and more. http://www.kenwebb.com

Harry Weinger

Mr. Harry Weinger is responsible for most of what you see in record store by some of the most important artists (Marvin Gaye, Mandrill, Supremes, Ohio Players, Etta James, Cameo, etc) that we discuss on Soul-Patrol. Harry works for Universal, doing re-issues, compilations, etc, and Universal owns the Motown, Chess, Polydor, MCA and other famous record catalogs from the past. Harry Weinger is a man of true integrity who understands just how important his role is as a custodian of a musical/cultural history that isn't always treated with the respect that it deserves.

We are quite fortunate indeed that he is doing what he is doing. If you see something by an artist that you like in the store, and if the CD has Harry's name on the back, don't even think about it... Just buy it!! There is an excellent chance that there will be something special included on that CD!

Preserving Black Music History - Kevin Amos

The preservation of our musical legacy is important on several levels. Today we will discuss a few strategies and give a few examples. Our children, as well as adults, should be exposed to the many genres that make up what we call “Great Black Music”. A concerted effort by Black educators, laypersons, and musicians, must be made to implement music appreciation curriculums in our communities and schools. It is obvious that many have embraced our music worldwide, but few know the true origins and history of this awesome contribution.

• Why Is Black Music Worth Preserving? • Some Efforts Of The Past (successful and unsuccessful) • The Current State: Examples of Today’s failure to preserve Black Music and the

Organizations/Individuals That Threaten It’s Preservation (Radio / TV formats, Culture Bandits)

• The Current State #2: Examples of Existing Organizations/Individuals that are doing successfully it today

• My own Personal Experiences • Some Strategic Ideas To Correct The Current Situation (Building cultural products, Maintain

Cultural Institutions, Reaching The Black Community worldwide)

• What is the feasibility of these ideas and what steps would need to be taken to implement some of them? (Working within a collective framework, Individual responsibility)

• Questions and comments

Marvin Gaye In The 70s, Mr. Harry Weinger (Universal/Motown) This participatory talk will spotlight the decade Marvin Gaye showed – and proved – his artistry. We will cover: What He Accomplished - How He Did It - What He Came Out Of – The Choices He Made- The Price He Paid.

The story will be told through the music, and through the facts – the timeline of his recordings, releases and related information. I will focus more on #1-7 below, with ‘I WANT YOU’ featured, as the ‘Deluxe Edition’ hits the street 10 days after the convention. Time permitting, unreleased music will be played. Questions will be encouraged.

An INDEPENDENT ARTIST is an artist who owns his or her own record label or is on a very small record label. Typically they DO NOT have a distribution mechanism that will allow them to get their CD’s into your local music retailer in your neighborhood.

• You won’t hear their music on commercial radio, nor see them appearing in music video’s on TV, or see them written about in mainstream publications, because they can’t afford to make the enormous payola payments that are required to get mainstream coverage.

• Contrary to the popular conception, INDEPENDENT ARTISTS are NOT always unknown. • In fact, there are some current INDEPENDENT ARTISTS, who are among the most famous

names in the entire HISTORY of SOUL MUSIC

Subject: Soul-Patrol: SP 2003 Convention Hey SP'ers: Don't know where to begin!! The convention was FABULOUS!! I'm sorry that I couldn't be there for the earlier panel discussion, which I’m told, went extremely well. Here are the memories (in no certain order) that I will carry with me for the rest of my life:

• Seeing my Mom & Dad (Blanche & Billy Paul) looking good and Billy sounding great!! • Hugging Giant Gene's - twice - and seeing his wife, Terry looking so good! • Dancing with Harry Weinger, Giant Gene, my brother Funkafize, Mike Davis, • John Rozz and Mom! • Seeing the glow on Bettye Lavette's face as she showed me her fabulous ring and

announced her marriage to another SP'er Kevin Kiley. • Handing out the souvenir glasses to all of the artists during the awards ceremony and

watching how proud they seemed to accept the small token of Soul-Patrol's love and respect.

• Having Raoul Cita - an original Black Rocker/Doo Wop artist - ride on MY bus!! • Meeting P.J. - even though we didn't get to talk that much. • Seeing Blanche Valentine & Selah looking good! • Spending time with my dear friend Janet (whom I've known FOREVER!!!) and watching her

have a good time. Welcome to the SP Janet {& Karol}! • Seeing Kenny Pitt & Zahmu! • Watching Tobias and also, Renee's Mom having a blast! • Watching new SP'er Steve and my sister-in-law Joann each win a poster and seeing 2

other new SP'ers, Ernest & Curtis having a blast! It's a small world, I worked with these guys almost 10 years ago and it took the SP to bring us back together.

• The music was slamming - thanks Giant Gene, Mike Boone and my partner in crime, Will Chill!!

• Having Bob & Mike's dad, Robert tease me. • Sharing a private joke with Harriet Davis. • FINALLY meeting Kevin Amos. • Seeing Pete and Darrell McNeil again! • It was great to meet Andy Lothian & Harold Flemming. • It was great to meet Lawrence Perry and his very lovely wife. Lawrence, • I'd like to say thank you for stepping up to work on a panel. We need to have more SP'ers

like yourself who are willing to pitch in and support Soul-Patrol, the music and the artists. Thank you. And thank you for your kind words.

• Hey Johnny, I didn't get to meet you, but I did catch a glimpse of you dancing. Hopefully, you'll come out to some of my future events.

• Celeste, it was wonderful to see you and your sister. I still feel bad about not getting together July 4th, but I'll be down your way very soon and I'll make up for it. Thanks for traveling to support us!

• Bradley - what happened to you? I looked all over for you. . . • Zie, you looked great as usual!! And tell Sharon it was good to see her again too. And all

three of us stayed out of the kitchen this year (lol!). It was nice to meet Marv Tauplin's wife and daughter, too. And you're welcome; the glass was no problem at all!!

• I was very honored to meet Dr. Rick Wilson of Mandrill. For someone who has achieved so much - musically and in the medical field - he is so down to earth. And good looking too!!

Bob said, "Cheryl wanted to make sure that everyone who worked so hard to make the Convention a success was rewarded with a small token of appreciation. A beautiful person indeed... " Bob, thank you for those kind words. I really did want to give everyone some sort of gift. And I know I was a pain in your butt about getting the names of the artists and I apologize (but expect me to do the same next year- lol!). I really enjoyed making them, giving them out and seeing the appreciation on the artists' faces. It was truly a labor of love! I'm already thinking about next year's gift. And one last thing - I said it before and I'll say it again: The Persuaders tore up my song "It's a Thin Line . . . ", didn't they??? And yes, I'm being teased about making a fool of myself, but I'd do it again in a New York minute!!

Subject: Soul-Patrol: Convention Memories A great convention indeed…

• I personally would like to thank Celeste, for making the drive from Virginia. I am so glad you and your sister won a poster.

• My fondest memories are listening to the Marvin Gaye tribute by Harry. • Sorry Bradley that we didn't get there in time for the blues seminar. We were at the Cheese

and Steak house when the Escorts came in and started talking about Soul Patrol and we told them that we were also going to the convention.

• Rachael Davis, you are a sweetheart. I'm glad you made the Student Council. I was able to assist Raoul Cita, writer of Life is But a Dream, and get him some food,

• Electric Sliding with Betty Lavette, we had it going on...Dancin with Bob & Peter when Harriet came over and tapped Bob on the shoulder... he was really getting down down down, seeing my Aadams Rib, Blanche, in the house, chatting with all the Wil's, Kevin, Johnny Wactor and his wife, Billy Paul you are still awesome and so were The Persuaders, Escorts and Ebonys. It was good to see Mr. & Mrs. Davis and brother Mike and chat with them.

• Thanks for the beautiful glass Cheryl. P.J. I enjoyed the time I spent with you. You are beautiful.

• Thanks Dee Dee for helping me get another room. And finally, I want to thank Sharon and the Tarplins for making the trip with me although you were in D.C. on vacation. I'm glad you had a good time like I did. We rode back to D.C. and Maryland listening to all the music that we bought at the convention, Betty Lavette - Souvenirs and a Woman Like Me, The Vocal Magic of The Harptones and The Best of the Escorts... Look Over Your Shoulder You'll Find Me Waiting.

Thanks Rib, for helping me answer some of the questions Telease wanted to know. We must keep the younger generation informed about the music and you are so knowledgeable.

• Thanks again Will Chill, Mike and Kevin Amos for making it a great night and most of all to Bob, Mike and all who attended.

Subject: Soul-Patrol: The Convention Dear Soul Patrol; Thanks to each, and every one of you all for making a bombastic affair even more so by your presence....

• PJ- your outward displays of love, and friendship were to be emulated • Cheryl-your open-heartedness, and overt attentiveness were much appreciated; • Ms Valentine-thanks for a having a good spirit to put up with my stuff in the past, only to be

a sweetie • Now, and forever; Baron Keels your spirit shows ,and glows like a beacon of precious light(

and your lovely wife too!) two minutes of rap ,and the fun felt like an eternity; • Nayeski- WHAT A WOMAN!!!!!!! And can shake quite the tail feather too! • Funk Overlord,Will Chill,Chancellor-thanks for bringing the FUNK in as many ways as time

allowed (unfortunately there was one tune-at least- that I needed to have ID'd so I could go and cop).

• Those were the folks that I encountered that stood out the most (from hanging around here for a couple 24 hrs.) There are others, and I beg your indulgence if I either forgot to mention you or even had a chance to groove with you.

Having said ALL of that, I got two more things to say.

I spent the bulk of the night with (my express choice by the way) Kidd Funkadelic himself...Mike Hampton...and I wouldn't have had it any other way. The four of us (Mike, myself ,and our women) chatted, and basically talked more s*** than a little bit...as if we knew each other for years. What a revealing conversation. As I mentioned in the afternoon session, I EDUCATED myself...in this unique way. Now, it needs to be said that not just anybody would get the opportunity that I had in this educational process.... without the facilitating of the Davis Brothers, and Soul Patrol I'd have NEVER had such an opportunity. Thank-you personally form the bottom of my heart Bob, and Mike. There's no better way to inform oneself about the 'Business of Music' (outside of reading that book) than meeting and greeting, and

networking with the very purveyors of the music itself...the ARTISTS. To that end I also rapped to Wil Hart, Betty LaVette (thanks Cheryl), Ric 'Doc' Wilson, The Persuaders (all of em), the Ebonys (the lead singer), Gil from Harold Melvin's Blue Notes, and of course Sheldon Riser (whom I especially plan to dialogue with further). There are probably others, but I guess that age thang is kicking in....lol!

2-Finally (with all due respects to Kevin Amos, Mike Boone, and Will Chill) I have a new slogan...and it isn’t as bad as it sounds folks! It is Fire the DJ's and HIRE A BAND!!!!!! We discussed the conundrums that constantly, and consistently face the independent artist. Shel Riser eloquently outlined it in his comments, and actually was the FIRST thang he spoke on: the lack of venues to play and hustle his music. We ALL grew up on LIVE music, and yet we are naturally programmed to ALWAYS hire a dj as soon as we give a function. Meanwhile cats like myself, Shel, Cliff ,and others can't get a gig, because people think that the only (and cheapest) way to have music at their function is to hire a DJ. Believe me, y'all GOTS the money! There's a time ,and a place for the dj...mostly on the radio, and broadcast on the internet. Don't get me wrong, we all went to record hops as kids...but that was merely the EXCEPTION not the rule. It’s time to turn back the hands of time, and WE have the power to do so. Let the dj's go...they'll ALWAYS have/get work....But let's start hiring these bands again!

What better place to really showcase the acts that sang to tracks, than to have REALLY heard them in the proper setting...over a live band? How about Sonny Boy, you could've all jammed to the sounds of Sonny Boy live. There's a band for every type occasion...whether it's sit-down type concertizing, or if it's get-down-get funky-get-loose type throwin down or even cheek-to-cheek romanticising...remember before they, played it on record or cd SOMEBODY took the time to write, produce, record (and most importantly) PLAY it! Fire the DJ's and HIRE A BAND!!!!! It's the one, and only way to BEGIN to make a difference...form there the sky is the limit! Now we return you to your regularly broadcasted (dj'd) transmission. Peace (Fire the DJ and HIRE A BAND) --Lawrence Perry Subject: Soul-Patrol: Wow...What A Weekend! Pt 1 As I am sitting here typing this I can hardly keep my eyes open but I have to do this. My sister in law was very impressed with the afternoon session. She didn't realize "how deep the Soul Patrol is" as she stated to me on our trip back to Pittsburgh. I was honored to moderate the panel on Preserving Black Music History. Thanks to Nina, Rick, and Darrell. Each one...teach one. I finally got to meet some of the folks I have been talking to for years here at SP. Cheryl(NY coordinator), PJ (our web design wiz), Funk, Baron, Tobias, and Selah.

Subject: Great Convention Bob

What can I say? To be asked to be on the panel was a great experience and was I honored. To meet and greet and yes network with the other participants was a thrill. My only regret was I didn’t get a lot of information I wanted. I would like information on Mr. Alston and we can talk more about the Blues. Kevin Amos had books on display and I want information on them to add to my personal library. The brother (Lawrence Perry) who moderated the panel I was on was so cool. I want his information. I finally met Darrell McNeil of the BRC. Years of being a voice on the

line, we finally met. Laronda and I met once up in New York. I'm sorry my ride came as fast as it did, because we were going to hang out and bounce some ideas off each other. Bob I’m still on a high. Meeting Rick Wilson of Mandrill? It can’t get any better. People were digging AG Magazine. I along with the AG family thank you. Let's all work together. Peace to the DAVIS BOYS. WE GOT YOUR BACK. --Eddie Bowman Subject: Soul-Patrol: Passing Thoughts On The Convention Hey Soul-Patrollers, This is the man behind the curtain, Mike Davis. I just wanted to drop a little note to everyone who attended the Soul-Patrol Convention this past Saturday. Not only was it a great party, I get back to that in a moment, but we got "educated" by people trying to make a difference. The afternoon sessions were inspiring. For those of you who missed it, all I can say is knowledge is power, and the panelist showed everyone in attendance where the real power is. Its in our hands, the buying public. My hat goes off to all those SMART people. You on the right track and we at Soul-Patrol are right there with you. The evening party was JAMMING. Everyone I spoke with said they had a great time. What you people don't realize is how much hard work Bob put into this year's convention. We need to remember that this is a labor of love for him, and not to take events like this for granted. He really went to the limit and we should all thank him for the BLAST we had. Nice work Bob. Now on to the really important message I want to pass on to all you Soul Patrol members out there.... As PJ whispered in my ear, "this is really a family thang..."and you are all part of the Soul-Patrol Family. Thanks from the bottom of my heart for being a part of mine and Bob's dreams. --Michael Davis P.S. -More good things are coming. Stay tuned.

Putumayo World Music Putumayo World Music was established in 1993 to introduce people to the music of other cultures. The label grew out of the Putumayo clothing company that was founded by Dan Storper in 1975 and sold in 1997. In the past seven years, the label has become known primarily for its upbeat and melodic compilations of great international music that are "guaranteed to make you feel good!" Putumayo's CD covers feature the distinctive naïve art of Nicola Heindl, whose colorful, folkloric style represents one of Putumayo's goals: to connect the traditional to the contemporary

to create products that people love. By combining appealing music and visuals while supporting its releases with creative retail promotions and marketing, Putumayo World Music has developed a reputation as one of the industry's most innovative companies. The label has produced more than 60 CDs and in 1998 branched out by signing its first artist: Ricardo Lemvo. Putumayo received its first Grammy nomination in 2001 for Miriam Makeba's Homeland CD. Other Putumayo Artists include Habib Koité; and Oliver Mtukudzi. A member of Business For Social Responsibility, Social Venture Network and Business Leaders For Sensible Priorities, Putumayo contributes a portion of its proceeds from many CDs to support non-profit organizations that do good work in the communities where the music originates. In 2002, Putumayo started the Putumayo Cross-Cultural Initiative, a non-profit organization that promotes cross-cultural understanding and facilitates community building through education and outreach. http://www.putumayo.com/
