At the age of 18, Gandhi travels to London to train as a lawyer.

He returns to India in 1891, but accepts a job at a law firm in South Africa.

His experience of racism in South Africa proved to be a turning point in his life.

He was refused admission to hotels, beaten up when he refused to give up his seat to a white man on a stage coach …..

…and thrown off a train when he refused to move to a third class compartment, after he had paid for a first class ticket.

APARTHEIDAn official policy of racial segregation formerly practiced in South Africa, involving political, legal, and economic discrimination against nonwhites.

Gandhi spends the next 21 years of his life leading NON-VIOLENT protests against racial exclusiveness and imperial domination.

“There are many causes that I am prepared to die for, but no causes that I am prepared to kill for.”

Upon returning to India, he realizes that the British are exploiting India.

Gandhi learns how to spin his own thread and weave his own cloth, and teaches thousands of others to do the same.

Gandhi and his supporters were jailed many times. Each time he is released, he continues to make his own cloth.

News of his fight for equality spreads, and people from all over the world begin to show support.

Leads a 248 mile walk to the sea to fight against the English Salt Tax and fasts for 21 days to draw attention to starving children in India.

Gandhi is thrown in jail for two years, but he has weakened the hold of the British government and strengthened the people of India, and England FINALLY gives up control of India.

It was decided to divide India into two separate countries - India and Pakistan.

Several days later, Gandhi was on his way to a prayer meeting in Delhi when he was shot three times and killed. He was 78 years old.
