Anne, Mom, and Margot
Anne Frank was born to Otto Frank and his wife Edith on June 12th 1929
She had a sister Margot who was three years older.
They were a Jewish family living in Germany.
The Rise of Hitler
By 1932 Adolf Hitler had risen to power in Germany.
Hitler was a dictator who blamed the Jews for all of Germany’s problems.
Otto realized Germany was unsafe and moved his family moved to the Netherlands.
Life in the Netherlands Family Safe for a while 1940 Germans invaded Netherlands Jews arrested and persecuted Jews movements were restricted and
they had to wear a yellow star Margot was called to a work camp in
Germany and family had to go into hiding immediately
Living Conditions Secret Annex Mr. and Mrs. Van
Pels and their son Peter joined them
They only had two rooms and a small bathroom
Food was stored in the attic
No Privacy
Family Relationships
Jewish families in hiding must live a life of silence.
A movable bookcase hid the secret door to their hide out
Tempers run short.
Relationships are torn.
Noises In the Night
Nazi Soldiers patrol the streets
Jews on the streets were killed
Shooting and screaming were heard throughout the night
Nightly freedom Quiet as
a mouse The families in hiding
had to be very quiet by day and couldn’t even flush the toilet
When the workers went home at 5.30 the families were free to move around
Anne called it their “Nightly Freedom”
Anne’s Diary Anne began to
keep a diary of day to day life in the annex.
She called her imaginary friend, “Kitty”
Anne decides that her diaries will be published as a book after the war.
She will call it “Achterhuis” (Secret Annex)
Concentration Camps
Discovery August 4th, 1944
the families are discovered.
Anne and her family are marched off and three days later are sent by freight car to Auschwitz concentration camp

Jews sent to camps on the DEATH TRAIN.
Many died on the way.
Anne and Margot die of typhus
In October, 1944 Anne and Margot are transferred to Bergen-Belsen Concentration Camp
They contract typhus and die in March, 1945
