keeping things out of landfills and making the repairs instead. Our repair rate hovers around 65%-70%, making us beat the average of other

Repair Cafes around the globe. Approximately 38% of the world’s Repair Cafes are in The Netherlands, 27% in Germany, 14% in Belgium, 8% in France, 4% in

Since 2001, the Senior Citizens’ Center of Oak Park and River Forest has chosen individuals who exemplify the lifestyle of Ulysses - one who strives to

learn, meet challenges, and develop body and spirit. Individuals chosen for this award are age 50 or above. They must be committed to life-long learning. They must also have had significant involvement in their com-munity and made contributions that have served to broaden its social, educational,

CLASS NEWS Woodshop will not be meeting for a few weeks. Please call the Center for up-to-date information regarding when classes will start again.

Beginning Weaving will star t on Tuesday, September 6 at 9:30.

The Scribblers Writing Group has been meeting this summer, but all the members should be back at the beginning of September. Please join them to share, listen and have coffee.

Are there any Euchre players out there? We’ve had a couple of people express interest in get-ting together to play Euchre - please let Nancy G. or Marcia know if you’re interested.

There will be a short delay before we start the Art History Course and the Essential Italy course. Both courses are part of The Great Courses series. The Art History course is called, Museum Masterpieces: The Louvre. The course will cover the Louvre’s collection of paintings starting with Leonardo and ending with Delacroix and Ingres. We’ll talk about how to look at paintings and also why they were important during their time. The armchair travel class is titled, The Guide to Essential Italy. Join us as we travel through Rome, Pompeii, Florence, Venice and other points of interest. This course covers the sights as well as the history of these magical places. THE ECONOMY SHOP NEWS

The Economy Shop started taking donations again on August 1. We have been working on getting our rooms in order for the new sale season. We have been getting a lot of donations

sent our way and the rooms are going to be well stocked.

We are always looking for volunteers. We put out a schedule via email towards mid-month with the upcoming dates for Economy Shop opportunities. People who are available let us

know, and we put them on the schedule. If you don’t let us know that you’re available, very seldom do we contact you. There is absolutely no pressure - we want people to enjoy

themselves and not have any stress put on them. And it’s a fun place to work! We have been so fortunate to have an amazing group of volunteers staff our rooms!!!

THANK YOU to those of you considering helping us out there and THANK YOU to those of you who will be returning - we appreciate you so much!!!

The support that the Economy Shop gives us plays a major role in keeping our Center as a viable and important community resource and is greatly appreciated.

REMINDER ABOUT PARKING

The Oak Park Arms worked on their parking lot and the spaces are no longer marked “Reserved for Residents” by a sign. The first two rows of parking (closest to the building) are

reserved for residents. We can still park in the lot, just not in the first two rows. There is also usually parking

available on the street.

VOLUNTEER LUNCH

Since some classes were on a summer break, we will be having our Annual Volunteer Lunch-eon on October 25. Invitations will be sent at the beginning of October.

MEMBERS

Please let Marcia or Nancy G. know if you have any ideas for the Center. We are always looking forward to bringing fresh things to the Center. As a member, you can attend any of our classes. Stop by and check us out - with most classes, you can join at any time. Beginners are

always welcome.

Oak Park.

On June 29, Fred Natkevi, had an article titled “Chicago’s Mother’s Day massacre” in the Wednesday Journal Viewpoints Section.

The Senior Citizens’ Center of Oak Park and River Forest is not a part of Senior Services, but we would like to bring you information about the community, as well as news from the Center. The SCC offers lifelong learning activities and Senior Services helps with transportation, support programs such as help with taxes and energy assistance. Senior Services also has a lunch program.
