Community Lay Director’s Letter

The Official Publication of the DaySpring Emmaus Community of Southern Indiana

Fall Issue - September 2019

Dear Emmaus Community,

It is amazing to think that it has been almost 25 years since I went on

my original Emmaus walk—Dayspring Emmaus Walk #22, Table of

Luke.

So much has happened since that time. Through all these years, there

has been one constant in my life. That is Jesus Christ. He has contin-

ued to walk with me through some of the lowest times (My wife’s battle

with Cancer), and some of the highest (The births of my three grand-

children). He continues to shower His grace and mercy on me, even

when I don’t deserve it. What an AWESOME GOD we serve.

Thank you, Community, for being a vital part of my life for the last 20 + years, and I hope

and pray that I can be as good a servant as those that have journeyed this road of

Community Lay Director before me. My predecessors left huge shoes to fill, but with the

team that is in place on the Board today, I know we can continue to carry the Light

together.

Let’s all continue to strive to build up Leaders within our Local Churches, and to Glorify our Heavenly Father, for HE is Worthy.

THE LIGHT

Do you remember your original Emmaus Walk? Do you want to rekindle that fire that burned within you on your Walk to Emmaus? Join a reunion group!

The Emmaus group reunion is a small accountability group of two to 12 persons who have usually participated in the three-day Walk to Emmaus and who want to continue their pursuit of a life lived wholly in the grace of God. These small follow-up groups help pilgrims translate the message conveyed on the Walk to Emmaus weekend into a daily walk with Christ. With the regular support of a few faithful friends, the gift of God's love in Jesus Christ becomes a lifestyle of Christian discipleship through the threefold discipline of piety, study, and action. Group reunions meet at regular times, usually weekly for an hour.

See page 7 of the newsletter for a list of community Reunion Groups. Can’t find one that matches you schedule? You can start a Reunion Group!

Have questions or want more information, call Craig Harris at (502) 494-2070.

FROM THE COMMUNITY SPIRITUAl DIRECTOR

Special Information for Walk Events Please be mindful that all of the Walk weekend events (send-off, candlelight, and closing) are for adults only. No child care is provided. Additionally, the Pilgrim follow-up is also an adults only event. With this in mind, please be sure to inform your Pilgrim and assist with child care needs for these events. It is the goal of Upper Room to preserve the sanctity of these special times, which specifically means that no community member, team member or Pilgrim should record or take pictures at the walk or walk events. No cameras are allowed on the walk or at walk events.

“I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow. So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is

anything, but only God, who makes things grow. The one who plants and the one who waters have one purpose, and they will each be

rewarded according to their own labor. “ - 1 Corinthians 3:6-8

We are servants of the Most High! What a privilege to plant and water the Seeds of the Gospel and then pray and watch God grow those

seeds into fruit to be harvested. It is the Holy Spirit that grows faith in a person so that person will look to the Author and Perfecter of our

faith and not any human. We must always point to the One who does the true work in a person's life; our job is plant and water, that is to

love and nurture people into a close relationship with Jesus Christ as their Savior. We must never try to take over the job of forcing growth;

things tend to die when we do that. And we rejoice that God is the perfect Gardener and uses imperfect workers in His fields. Praise be to

the Lord that we are witnesses of His great work! Be blessed in the Lord this day!

Blessings,

Mark

“Continue to remember those in prison as if you were together with them in prison, and those who are

mistreated as if you yourselves were suffering.” He-brews 13:3

Thank you to all who came to the Flaget Center to support our 21 butterflies on Flight 62 over Labor Day weekend. God moved in so many ways during the week-end and those 21 butterflies left the week-end changed and ready to change the world! We appreciate your prayers and service.

Our next flight, #63 will take off January 18-20, 2020 which is Martin Luther King, Jr. weekend. We are now accepting applications for caterpillars. Lay Directors for Flight 63 are Dayspring’s own Jeremy Sabala and Wiese Carlisle. Teams are being built right now. If you are interested in serving our youth on a team please sign up. We are al-ways looking for new people to experience the blessing of service on a chrysalis flight.

All forms and applications and information can be found on the web-site, cornerstonechrysalis.com. If you have questions you can also text or call the Chrysalis Dayspring Liaison, Stacy Kampschaefer, at 502-592-6777

There are so many ways in which the community can

show their agape love to the pilgrims during these

weekends. One way is to pray … pray … and then pray

some more. Other ways would be to prepare snack

agape (cookies, brownies, dessert bars, salty snacks,

cakes, etc.). Pillow and table agape will also be needed

(50 pieces for pillow agape and 100 pieces for table

agape). Have you signed the prayer charts yet? Meal

servers are also needed. Write a letter or note to the

pilgrims. Attending all the walk events (send-off,

candlelight, closing, follow-up/gathering) is so special

for the pilgrims. Do you remember your candlelight?

Nothing says love like the body of Christ loving each

other on behalf of Christ.

There are still opportunities to serve in the

REC Community. Below are some upcoming

REC weekends. Candelights are 6:30-8 p.m.

Upcoming REC Candelights are:

Clark Co. Women - September 21 at Ohio Falls UMC, Clarksville. Lay Director: Abi Thompson

Clark Co. Men—October 19 at Ohio Falls UMC, Clarksville. Lay Director: Alan Miles

Madison Correctional— November 9at New Life Fellowship, Madison. Lay Director: Teressa Sherrard

Crawford Co. Men - November 16 at Hillside Christian, Marengo . Lay Director: Keith Mundy

Did you know that in order to sponsor someone on the Emmaus Walk you must have attended sponsorship training? This 30 minute training will give you the basics of what you need to

know.

Trainings are held at various locations by a team of community trainers as well as after each gathering. If you are interested in

being trained, please reach out to Ryan Watson at (812) 620-0550 or [email protected]. You can also watch

the Facebook page for upcoming trainings.
