The Light of Meridian
“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Nei-
ther do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its
stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your
light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your
Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:14-16 (NIV)
A Word from Pastor Steve
While I was on vacation with my family a few weeks ago we had an
opportunity to visit New York City. One of the things I wanted to do while we
were there was visit the 9/11 Memorial and Museum. The day that changed the
world was almost 16 years ago, but I remember it vividly.
Part of the story after the towers fell is an old Episcopal church called
St. Paul’s. The church sat in the shadows of the towers. After they fell the
church was covered in paper and soot, yet, they opened their doors to serve the
first responders. Their pews became beds for the firefighters and police officers.
Their kitchen and fellowship hall became a place for volunteers to eat and nurs-
es to bandage the wounded.
One of the worst days in American history this church responded with
open doors. This historical church didn’t care about their pews getting de-
stroyed or the church getting dirty. They cared about people, A New York City
Police chief said of the church, “St. Paul’s has been an oasis of Heaven in the
midst of Hell.”
We are a city on a hill. We are a light in the midst of darkness, an oasis
of Heaven in the midst of hell. May we have the same spirit in us that was in
the people of St. Pauls' on 9/11, a church concerned about serving people and
letting the love of God shine through us. May we put our light on a stand that it
gives light to all so that our Father in Heaven may be glorified.
In Christ,
Pastor Steve

“Be On Guard”
First Passage: Psalm 119:89-96
Focus Passage: Mark 13:28-37
Synopsis: Everything has an end date. The earth and
everything in it is finite. However, the God we serve
is infinite. His promises and precepts shall have no
end. As followers of Jesus we must be on guard and
keep watch. We don’t know when Christ will return,
but we do know how to live while we wait.
As a father has compassion on his children,
so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him

“For Love and Money”
First Passage: Isaiah 42:1-4
Focus Passage: Mark 14:1-11
Synopsis: Here we have the dichotomy of 2 follow-
ers of Jesus. One, an unknown woman, anoints Jesus
with expensive oil, a great sacrifice of faith. The oth-
er, Judas, hands Jesus over to the authorities for
money. A sacrifice of faith in the opposite direction.
What sacrifice are you willing to make for your
Lord?”
June 18th
“Is It I, Lord?”
First Passage: Isaiah 42:5-9
Focus Passage: Mark 14:12-26
Synopsis: In the famous scene of the last supper Jesus
predicts his betrayer. What’s fascinating is that all of
the disciples respond, “Surely you don’t mean me?”
All of the disciples show their doubt of faith with
their question. We all have that doubt in us and all
have the ability to betray our savior. At the same
time, we are all invited to the table anyway.

“Expected Denial”
First Passage: Psalm 36:1-5
Focus Passage: Mark 14:27-31
Synopsis: We all would like to think that our faith is
strong, that there is no way we would deny Jesus.
Peter was Jesus’ right hand man and he swears on
his life that he would never deny his Lord. Do we
think of ourselves as stronger than we are? When
we do this we set ourselves up for failure. We must
be humble in our faith knowing that we can all turn

budgeted mission money.
The Session will break for the summer.
