TROOPING THE COLOUR

On the 11th of June 2016 I went to watch trooping the colour with my mum, dad and brother. We woke up at about 5.00 to avoid London traffic. It took about 2 hours to get to central London. We went to Victoria and had a nice breakfast there.

We walked to Downing Street and went into the stadium. As we approached our seats we saw my Godfather on a snowy white horse with two other men on black Horses. We sat down and heard bands playing lively tunes. Then the guards came on. I was sitting in a stand near the front. Soon my Godfather trotted out, shouting orders I couldn’t quite make out. He was wearing a black Bearskin Hat, a sword he held in a scabbard that was hanging from his belt, a red tunic, black trousers, some medals and very shiny shoes. The guards were lined up and members of the royal family trooped in on Horses.

The Queen arrived in a historic Carriage, with Prince Philip, wearing a lime green dress and Hat and sat herself with Prince Philip on a throne. The crowd stood up and soldiers saluted to show her marks of respect. The guards marched off and the Queen set off in a black Victorian-style Carriage. We left the stadium and watched from the Mall as 30 aircraft flew over in unison. There were: Typhoons, Tornados, Red Arrows, helicopters such as a Chinook and Merlin.

Nursery News

The Nursery recently welcomed in PC Skingsley. He visited us to talk about how to keep safe when crossing a road when you’re out with your family and why it’s important to keep safe. PC Skingsley showed us the different parts of his uniform and we were able to sit in his police car and press the button to make the lights flash.

Thinking in Circles

During our circle time this week, we carefully listened to the story of the Rainbow Fish and discussed our thoughts on the story. The children wondered how the Rainbow Fish was feeling through the story. They took turns to say what special thing they would share with a friend and why. Finally, we all discussed who we are looking forward to having as our new friends in Year One.

Nicol Lepra Fundraising

If any Year 3-6 Nicol pupils have not yet handed their workout sponsorship money into the office, please do so as soon as possible. At this moment in time we have raised £936.09 but let’s see if we can reach £1000! Mrs Budgen will collate and send any outstanding money raised to LEPRA so we can get an updated total before the end of term.

Clubs

Next week will be the last week in which clubs are held, other than Ballet (due to an earlier missed session).

Thank you for your support of the system over the year; to teachers, pupils and parents.

Our thanks go particularly to Pani Stylianou who has been a provider for the past three years, but is now unable to continue on into next year due to changes in his work commitments. Many, many children have enjoyed his football club and he will be greatly missed.

We would all like to wish Jenny De Jongh our very best as she recovers from a recent operation.

Next year’s clubs will begin the week after Open Morning, as usual. Notification of the club letters will be announced in The Lion on the Friday before all forms are handed to the children at school the following Monday.

Please contact Mrs Giles at [email protected] if you have any queries or suggestions for next year’s provision.

Super Sewing!

Year 2 looked at a range of felt, thread, beads and buttons. They then selected the materials they wanted to use and created a design for their sewing.

After they had cut out the felt pieces, they sewed them onto some hessian. Everyone had to work hard to use the running stitch and keep the thread on the needle!

Digestion

In science, Year 4 has been studying digestion this week. They have enjoyed constructing cardboard human torsos, complete with all the major organs and assembling the science department's large model torso with removable organs. However, the highlight will be today's long awaited practical, where we plan to recreate the digestive system with real food from start to finish using a pair of stockings!

Reflections

As we approach the end of the year, Year Six have been reflecting on the things that they have enjoyed the most in their final year in the Upper Junior School.

This year I have enjoyed the variety of opportunities that the school has offered me. I have had the opportunity to represent the School in IAPS tournaments for both hockey and rounders. It was really fun and great to hear the mums and dads cheering for us. We came 4th in the country for rounders and 5th for hockey.

I have enjoyed the last few weeks as we have been working on our Individual Learning Projects and I love the topic that we have been researching. My favourite memory was throwing wet sponges at Mr Ellis at the Summer Fete (he definitely deserved it for all of the homework he has set!).

Maths is Fun

In Year One we have been exploring division through sharing numbers into groups. We have had great fun solving some tricky problems such as ‘Jessica buys 14 bread rolls. She has two every day. How many days will she have bread rolls for?’ We have used unifix cubes and counters to solve the problems and have learnt how to write a division number sentence. We are very proud of our work and cannot wait to do some more.

PARENT ALERT

Please would all parents be extremely vigilant as we have had cases of head lice reported to us recently. Children’s hair needs to be inspected regularly. If you find head lice then you should speak to the local pharmacist who will recommend one of the preparations currently being used. However advice from our medical centre is that for a period of two weeks after treatment hair should be washed and conditioned daily and combed through using a nit comb to comb out any newly hatched eggs. This ongoing treatment is an important part of the process of ensuring the hair is free from head lice. For the most up to date information please go to http://www.patient.co.uk/health/head-lice-and-nits.

Infants’ Sports Day

Infants’ Sports Day was such a colourful and exciting event as the children represented countries under an Olympic theme. There were smiles aplenty as the children ran their races and were cheered on by a very large crowd of supporters.

The children were a real credit, participating in the true spirit of the Olympics.

Clare Upton Visit

On Monday my coach, and British 5000m long track ice speed skating champion - Clare Upton - came to speak to my class, 4G. Clare spoke to us about the different styles of skating - figure, speed and hockey. I brought in my figure and speed skating kit to show the class, and I also helped to demonstrate the different poses used to speed skate. I have been figure skating for 2 years, and speed skating for 4 months. My ambition is to make Team GB and represent Great Britain in speed skating; both long track and short track. By Thomas S (4G)
