Acknowledgements

I am indebted to so many people in the game of lacrosse who over the years have helped me to fulfill my dreams. As I make the transition from a player to a coach, I can now take what so many brilliant coaches have taught me over the years and utilize their teachings to help develop the future players of the game. To any coach I have ever had, Thanks!

This book would not have been possible without the support and contributions of so many people. I would like to thank the following for their contributions:

Patrick Ammendolia- Eastern Connecticut State University 2003 Marc Graham- Assistant Coach, Trinity College Mario Lopez- Assistant Coach, Trinity College, UMass 1992 Scott Hinchey- Glastonbury High School, UMass 2002 Ryan Cavanaugh- Eastern Connecticut State UniversityRick McCarthy- Assistant Coach, Wesleyan University Greg Furst- Lehigh University Shawn Nadelen- Assistant Coach, Towson University, Baltimore Bayhawks Lindsey Sanderson- Head Coach, Philadelphia Wings Cabell Maddux- Head Coach, McLean High School, Hobart CollegeChristopher Smalkais- Head Coach, Fairfield Prepatory College Jack McGetrick- Head Coach, Bellarmine University Steve Zella- Springfield College 1999

Chapter 1

Shooting“It’s not about how hard you shoot the ball,

it’s about where the ball ends up!”

Crease Shooting

2

Set-Up

1. Have all the players that you want shooting stand in an arc just inside the restraining box.

2. Place one player in the middle to start. This player will be the shooter “S”.

3. All of the players on the outside will have a ball.

Instructions

1. The shooter will start in the crease. He will run toward one of the players on the outside and call for the ball.

2. The player’s name whom he calls should then pass the ball to him.

3. When he catches the ball he should turn and shoot it on the goal.

4. When shooting, it is important that the player recognizes where he is on the field. He will be running all around the crease. When he is catching the ball he should be turning to the area which will give him the best shooting opportunity. Try to instruct the players that if

there was an imaginary defenseman playing him, he would have to turn to shoot. This usually means turning to the outside in order to get the shot off.

5. This will help players become confident catching and shooting with both hands.

6. Once a player passes the ball he should take a few steps back so that he doesn’t confuse the shooter.

7. Run the drill until everyone has taken a shot.

Coaching Tips

1. This is a calm drill and works well after a tough long practice. It gives the players time to catch a breather and work on some passing and shooting without having to run too much.

2. If you would like to place a goalie in the goal you can. Since most of the shots are question mark type shots usually the velocity has subsided and the goalie has a chance to make saves. Even if the goalies go in for a couple of rounds they get to face a lot of shots.

3. This is also a great drill to break up a practice. If the defense needs instruction then you can send the offense down. The drill is pretty manageable and easy to run.

4. This is always a good drill for attack men. They get a lot of shots in close. Every once in a while, throw a mock defender in to give the shooters some pressure.

Page 11: THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK - Amazon Web Services · The Little Black Book of Lacrosse Drills ... The letters indicated between the drill name and page number describe what fundamental

Snaps

3

Set-Up

1. This drill helps to develop a good quick-shot on the crease. It is set up to simulate a pick-and-roll for a quick shot.

2. Have two even lines made up of short sticks. These lines should start 7 yards off the edge of the crease along GLE.

3. Place a cone in the center of the crease area, usually 8-10 yards top center of the goal crease.

4. Balls should be evenly distributed between both lines.

Instructions

1. Designate a player to start the drill. This player will begin without a ball.

2. Without a ball, the player will run to the center cone. When he gets to the cone he will immediately improvise setting a pick and then quickly roll directly down toward the goal.

3. As the player begins to roll, the first player in the other line should have a ball in his stick. He will throw a

pass to the player rolling towards the goal.

4. The pass should be timed to reach the player rolling when he has taken 1-2 steps towards the goal.

5. The player who rolled will catch the pass and immediately shoot without cradling the ball.

6. The player who threw the pass will then break to the center cone. It is now his turn to shoot after he sets a pick and then rolls.

7. Continue until there are no balls left. Players should switch lines after each shot to practice shooting and passing with both hands.

Coaching Tips

1. Try to have your players explode out of the pick. The quicker the roll, the better the chances are that he will be open for the split second shot.

2. Be sure that players are moving their feet when passing. Bad habits always begin -and must end- in practice!

Page 12: THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK - Amazon Web Services · The Little Black Book of Lacrosse Drills ... The letters indicated between the drill name and page number describe what fundamental

Quick Sticks

4

Set-Up1. Divide the players into two even

lines. The lines should be five yards off the edge of the crease at the restraining line.

2. The players in line R should have their sticks in the right hand for the shot. The players in line L should have their sticks in the left hand for the shot.

3. The coach or a player will be behind the goal with all of the balls.

4. A goalie can be in the net for this drill. All shots are quick-sticks. This means that there is no cradling after the pass. Players should catch and shoot within seconds. No cradling allowed!

Instructions

1. On the coaches whistle, a player from line L will sprint towards the outside goal post.

2. When the player gets within 7-8 yards, the coach or player will feed him a pass.

3. The player will then take a quick-stick shot by catching and shooting immediately after the ball is caught.

4. When the ball is shot the player from line R will begin his sprint.

5. The coach or player will have to work fast behind the net. The players will approach quickly.

Coaching Tips

1. Teach your players to show a target. Every player is different when it comes to quick-sticking a ball for a shot. Some players like the ball off their shoulder, and some like it right in front of their head. Either way, when the player gets into scoring position it is vital that he makes eye contact with the passer and has a target for the passer.

2. Be sure your players sprint.

Variations

1. Have the players line up at different spots on the field. For example two lines behind cutting to the front of the net or a line on each side of the restraining box cutting from the left and right side parallel to GLE.

Page 13: THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK - Amazon Web Services · The Little Black Book of Lacrosse Drills ... The letters indicated between the drill name and page number describe what fundamental

Super Splits

5

Set-Up1. Divide the shooters into two even

lines up top. The lines should be about 7 yards above the restraining line facing the goal.

2. Place two cones four yards inside the restraining line in front of each line.

3. Place all of the balls in the middle of the two lines.

Instructions1. The players in the R/L line will

begin the drill with their sticks in their right hand. They will sprint towards the cone and make a split dodge to their left hand. Once the stick is in their left hand they will take a shot on net.

2. The players in the L/R line will begin the drill with their sticks in their left hand. They will sprint toward the cone and make a split dodge to their right hand. Once the stick is in their right hand, they will take a shot on net.

3. Players should switch lines after each shot in order to practice shooting with both hands.

Coaching Tips 1. Help kids develop this critical dodge

by teaching them the importance of: a) Getting a good run at the

defender. b) Smooth transition between

hands when dodging. c) Using their feet to help set up

the defender.d) Using their body to sell the

initial direction before the split dodge (ex. Shoulder fake).

e) Most important, make a quick decision to shoot or pass after the dodge has occurred.

Variations 1. Have the players line up on the side

of the field in the alleys. The players will then make their split dodges as if to beat the defender on the high side for a quick shot. Rotate between lines after each shot.

2. You can also combine both drills and have a four station split dodge-shooting drill. This helps speed the drill up.

Page 14: THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK - Amazon Web Services · The Little Black Book of Lacrosse Drills ... The letters indicated between the drill name and page number describe what fundamental

Ladder Split Shot

6

Set-Up1. Lay down a speed ladder so that the

front of it is top center on the restraining line.

2. Players should be lined up directly behind the ladder, each with a ball.

3. Put a cone 2-3 yards from the end of the ladder as a point to split dodge at.

Instructions1. This drill helps the players build

quick feet which is important for a great split dodge.

2. Players start with a ball in their stick and run through the ladder. When they come out of the ladder they will make an immediate split dodge, take a few steps and then take a shot on the run.

3. They will then get back in line for round 2.

4. Each round should be a different ladder drill to help build the players agility, speed and quickness.

5. Shots should be taken on the run and directed at a specific target area.

Ladder Drills 1. 2 feet in each box, 2 feet out. Left foot first.

3L 7L 1L 5L

2R 6R

4R 8R 2. 2 feet in each box, 2 feet out. Right foot first. (Same as above, however start with the right foot)

3. 2 feet in each box, right foot first.

2 L 4L 6L 8L 1R 3R 5L 7R

4. 2 feet in each box, left foot first (Same diagram as number 3, switch feet.)

5. Sideways, 2 feet in each box. Left foot first.

2R 1L 4R 3L 6R 5L 8R 7L

6. Sideways, 2 feet in each box. Right foot first. (Same as diagram number 5, face different direction and lead with opposite foot)

7. 1 foot each box, high knees.

1L 2R 3L 4R 5L 6R

Coaching Tips 1. This drill is designed to help build

explosiveness, quickness and agility while still allowing the players to shoot the ball.

2. Be sure to demonstrate the ladder drills to ensure the kids know exactly what is expected of them.

3. Having the players complete this with a ball and stick can make it confusing. The idea is for the players to develop quick feet while carrying their stick. This will help them become a better dodger.

Page 15: THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK - Amazon Web Services · The Little Black Book of Lacrosse Drills ... The letters indicated between the drill name and page number describe what fundamental

Pick And Roll Shots

7

Set-Up1. For all three drills (A, B, and C) the

set up is the same. 2. Divide your players into 2 equal

lines as diagramed. 3. A goalie can be in goal if wanted. 4. Balls should be evenly distributed

between both lines.

Instructions1. For all three drills (A, B, and C) the

instructions are the same. 2. The first player in the black line

runs towards his teammate in the front of the white line. The player then sets a pick and immediately rolls towards the goal.

3. As soon as the player rolls toward the goal the player who was second in line passes the ball to the player who just rolled.

4. Pass comes from same line! 5. Once the player catches the ball he

then takes a quick shot. As a coach you can have them practice a certain fake, a quick stick, etc.

6. After the player receives the pass the man in the front of the white line begins to run towards the black line to set a pick. The player then rolls and receives a pass from the second person in the white line.

7. The drill keeps alternating lines. 8. There are 3 different diagrams

showing positioning for pick and rolls in all areas of the field.

Diagram A represents a pick and roll on the low crease.

9. Diagram B represents a pick and roll along the sides of the field to mimic inside cuts to the crease. Run drill B from both sides to practice both hands.

10. Diagram C represents a midfield roll towards the inside of the field for a shot high crease.

Coaching Tips 1. When rolling, be sure the players

roll towards the goal properly and explode out of their pick to mimic catching a defenseman sleeping.

2. Shots should be taken quickly. 3. Passes should be arriving right as

the player is coming out of his roll. This timing is key because in games if the pass doesn’t arrive in a timely manner the player will not remain open.

Page 16: THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK - Amazon Web Services · The Little Black Book of Lacrosse Drills ... The letters indicated between the drill name and page number describe what fundamental

Hamster Shooting

8

Set-Up1. You can do this drill at both ends of

the field. 2. Set up four cones along the

perimeter of the crease area. The two top cones should be 10-12 yards out from GLE and the back cones should be 4 yards behind GLE. See diagram.

3. A player should be in the middle (C) with all the balls.

4. One player (A) should start at one of the back cones as shown above.

5. The rest of the team is doing line drills or a shuttle drill while they wait their turn.

Instructions1. The player who is passing the ball

(C) starts with a ball in his stick. On the coach’s whistle the player shooting (A) begins to run along the outside of the cones as shown above.

2. The shooting player (A) will receive a pass from player (C) as he approaches each cone.

3. Player (A) will then catch the ball, turn around the cone, and take a shot on the run while running towards the other cone.

4. After the shot, player A will continue to the next cone, receive another pass from player C, turn the corner and take a shot.

5. The shooter will take 3 shots during this shooting drill.

6. All players not involved will be running a shuttle drill outside of the restraining box. Rotation is as follows: A player from the shuttle drill sprints to the position "A". Player A becomes the passer (C) after he is finished shooting. The passer (C) then leaves to enter the shuttle drill.

7. Run this drill until everyone has had a turn taking a shot. Usually it takes 5-7 minutes for 10-12 players.

Coaching Tips 1. Be sure all players are sprinting.

This drill combines quick sprints with shooting.

2. Be sure the passes are being thrown well. This ensures that the drill continues smoothly.

3. When the previous player completes the drill the designated player in the shuttle drill can then sprint down to the starting position.

4. Shots should be taken quickly. Try to have your players shoot in the midpoint of each cone. During the shot when the player is running away from the goal have him stop and plant as he would in a game.

5. Be sure the passer stays aware in the middle. He should be picking up a ball and at the same time positioning himself out of the way of the incoming shot. Passes should be caught by the players shooting directly at the cones.

Page 17: THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK - Amazon Web Services · The Little Black Book of Lacrosse Drills ... The letters indicated between the drill name and page number describe what fundamental

Up and Over Shooting

9

Set-Up1. Two even lines are to be set up.

Line 2 behind the goal on the end line, line 1 seven yards above the restraining line.

2. Line 1 up top will start with all of the balls.

3. A goalie can be in net if desired.

InstructionsUp Top 1. Player 1 will throw a pass to player

2 behind the goal cutting towards spot “A.”

2. Once player 2 behind the goal catches the ball at spot “A,” he will pivot and drive the backside of the goal towards point “B.”

3. As player 2 behind is dodging player 1 up top is timing his cut. Player 1 will cut and receive a pass from player 2 who is at point “B”.

4. Once player 1 catches the ball he will take a shot.

From Behind 1. The balls now start behind the goal

and are passed up top to player 1 breaking wide to point “A”.

2. Player 2 will then time his cut as player 1 dodges to pass from point “B”.

3. As player 2 drives the backside he will receive a pass from player 1. Player 2 can either cut to the middle to shoot, or shoot off a quick question mark move after the pass to shoot.

Coaching Tips 1. This is a good drill for beginners. It

teaches them to break hard to get open for a pass. It also teaches them to dodge hard in order to get a few steps on a defender which allows them to make a good pass or take a shot.

2. Teach players that even though the ball is nowhere near them, they still have to move in order to get open and be a threat on the field.

Page 18: THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK - Amazon Web Services · The Little Black Book of Lacrosse Drills ... The letters indicated between the drill name and page number describe what fundamental

Hitch Shooting

10

Set-Up1. Two even lines off to the side of the

field above the alleys as diagramed by the number 1 and 2 arrows above.

2. The first player in each line will step out. The balls will be placed in the number 1 line to start. This will change midway through the drill when the balls switch sides.

3. A goalie can be in the net if desired.

Instructions1. The first player in each line,

represented by P1 and P2, will step out. Notice the player who came from the line with the balls (P1) goes to top center and the player without the ball (P2) is on the opposite side standing on the restraining box corner.

2. P1 will dummy dodge down the side far enough to draw a slide. Sometimes a coach needs to stand there so that players understand how far to go.

3. Once P1 is in the area where he would draw a slide he hitches or turns away from pressure.

4. At the same time, P2 should now have cut to top center, timing it so that as P1 turns P2 is just arriving.

5. P1 then will pass the ball back to P2.

6. P2 will then make a quick dummy dodge down the backside and take a shot on the goal.

7. Then the next two players repeat the same drill.

8. Have players switch lines so that they practice passing and shooting from both sides.

Coaching Tips 1. This drill is a great lead in to

practicing how to attack the weak side of the field.

2. As a coach you have to stress that dodges need to be strong. Otherwise, the slide will never come and the weak side will not be open.

3. Remember to stress that you “Dodge to Score” at all times.

4. For added practice have your team’s long poles on the crease and get them to slide to the original dodger. This helps the defenseman to practice staying with their slide and the offensive player to hitch and pass the ball quickly.

5. Be sure that your players understand the timing involved with the P2 player. If P2 arrives too early then there is a good chance his defenseman will be covering him. If P2 arrives too late then P1 will have no one to pass to. In game situations P1 could find himself doubled.

Page 19: THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK - Amazon Web Services · The Little Black Book of Lacrosse Drills ... The letters indicated between the drill name and page number describe what fundamental

Kriss Cross Shooting

11

Set-Up1. Divide all of your players who are

shooting into 4 even lines. 2. The lines should be placed as shown

in the diagram. Each arrow represents a line and the direction it faces.

3. When shooting from “Up Top” the balls should be in the lines up top along the restraining line. When shooting from “Down Low” the balls should be in the lines along GLE.

4. No goalie in net.

Instructions1. In both drills, the play starts with the

first player in both lines having a ball. So in “Up Top” shooting this means the first player in both of the lines on the restraining line will have a ball.

2. The players both make a pass (1) to the line opposite them. After the pass both players make a quick “V” cut to the outside and then sprint across the top of the crease.

3. When cutting, look for a pass (2) from the opposite line. For example, the top left line should be looking for a pass from the bottom right line.

4. Once the player catches the pass, he should take a quick shot while on the run.

5. The players who made the pass should sprint to the shooting line and the players who shot should move into the passing line. When changing lines, passers move straight up to the line across from them not the diagonal line. The players who shot will end up in the diagonal line than where they started.

Coaching Tips 1. A great drill to get your players

multiple shots. Once the shooters have caught the ball, the next players should start.

2. Remind the players in the lines on GLE to stay 10 yards out if they don’t want to get hit by the ball.

3. Be sure players are passing and shooting with both hands. When passing and shooting, sticks should be to the outside.

Page 20: THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK - Amazon Web Services · The Little Black Book of Lacrosse Drills ... The letters indicated between the drill name and page number describe what fundamental

4 Line Cut Shots

12

Set-Up1. For the following drills the set up

will be the same.2. Divide the team into 4 even lines.

Two lines will start at the top of the restraining box and two lines will start on either side of the goal along GLE. See diagrams.

3. Depending on the drill balls will be distributed either in the bottom lines or the top lines.

Instructions1. Balls are placed in the top two lines. 2. The player throws the first pass (1)

across to the first player in the opposite top line.

3. The player who catches the ball then throws a pass (2) to the player in the front of the bottom line. During this pass the original player begins a cut.

4. The bottom player now passes (3) to the cutting player for the shot.

5. After the top player has passed the ball down low, he then picks up a ball and passes across doing the same thing but on the opposite side. See diagram B

6. Players should stay on the same side of the field. After the top player shoots he will go to the back of the bottom line opposite his original starting line. The player passing down low will move up to the

cutting/shooting line on the same side of the field.

Coaching Tips 1. This drill is excellent to practice

passing and shooting. Players get the opportunity to develop shooting skills while on the run, passing and catching skills in a tight area and most important communication with teammates.

2. Remember to have kids shoot with a purpose. Direct the players where to shoot the ball. They might not always hit the target however at least as a coach you know that the players are not just letting it fly.

Balls Down Low 1. This is the exact same as when the

balls were up top, except this time the balls start down low. The drill is now reversed. See diagram C and D for the movement of passes and cuts from each line down low.

Sweep the Box Shooting

14

Set-Up1. Divide the players into 4 even lines.

Have the lines facing the center of the field on the restraining box wing line. This is diagramed above with the lines numbered 1-4.

2. Each line should have balls. 3. Place two cones in the middle of the

field as diagramed above.

Instructions1. There are two diagrams above. Each

diagram represents each of the two parts of the drill.

2. In Part A the first player in line 1 and line 4 start with a ball. The player in line 1 throws a pass to the player in line 2 opposite him. The player in line 4 throws a pass to the player in line 3 opposite him.

3. After each player throws his first pass he will sprint as if he was making a hard cut in a game. Player 1 will run around the top cone and player 4 will run around the bottom cone.

4. Once the two players reach their respective cones they will receive a pass back from the players in lines 2 and 3 respectively.

5. When players 1 and 4 catch the pass they should take 2 or three more steps and then shoot the ball on the run at the net.

6. Once the shots have been taken then the players in lines 2 and 3 will pick up a ball and begin the drill from their side. They will do the same thing as in part A just from the opposite direction.

7. Once the players have taken a shot they should change lines as follows: Line 1 to 4, line 4 to 3, line 3 to 2, and line 2 to 1.

Coaching Tips 1. Teach the fundamentals of shooting

on the run. Good body turns, hide the head of the stick, footwork and shooting on different planes.

2. This drill helps players become used to making strong cuts during 1-4-1, 1-3-2, and 2-2-2 offensive sets.

Page 23: THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK - Amazon Web Services · The Little Black Book of Lacrosse Drills ... The letters indicated between the drill name and page number describe what fundamental

MadShots

15

Set-Up

1. This drill is great for allowing your players to get a lot of shots off in a short period of time.

2. The drill is set up with three even lines. Two of the lines are 5-7 yards off each side of the crease along GLE (1 and 2). The third line is located at the top center of the restraining line (3).

3. Balls are distributed evenly between lines 1 and 2.

Instructions

1. Choose which side you want the drill to start from. For example, the player from line 3 cut toward the player in line 1. The diagram above is designed for player 3 to cut toward player 1.

2. On the whistle the player from line 3 will cut towards line 1. He will then receive a pass and take a quick shot while on the run.

3. After the player from line 1 throws player 3 a pass, he will immediately cut behind player 3 and receive a pass from the player in line 2.

4. Once player 1 receives a pass from the player in line 2 he will take a quick shot.

5. Once the pass has been thrown from player 2 to player 1, the next player in line 3 can start his cut toward the player in line 1.

6. The rotation is as follows: Line 3 goes to line 1 after his shot. Line 1 goes to line 2 after his shot and finally, line 2 goes to line 3.

Coaching Tips

1. This drill is designed for repetition. Try to get your players as many shots as possible.

2. Practice this drill from both sides to develop the players shooting skills with both hands.

3. If you can, designate a spot at which you want your players to aim. For example, the players in line 3 should shoot for the bottom corners while the players from line 1 should aim for the top corner.

4. If your players are already split up into different colors make a game out of the drill by counting which teams hit your designated shooting spot. The winning team can earn fewer sprints!

5. Once the balls run out have them sprint to retrieve them and get right back at it from the other side.

6. This is a great pre-game shooting drill!

Page 24: THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK - Amazon Web Services · The Little Black Book of Lacrosse Drills ... The letters indicated between the drill name and page number describe what fundamental

Forty One Shooting

16

Set-Up

1. This drill involves 4 players. In the diagram above you can see them numbered 1-4 in their starting positions.

2. The ball starts with player 1 at “X”. 3. All of the extra players are standing

off to the side ready for their next turn.

Instructions

1. Player 1 begins a dodge from “X” to the right side of the goal. The player should dodge to draw a slide.

2. Player 1 will then turn back. As he is just about to turn, player 4 peels off to the backside of the crease and runs to “X”. Player 1 will then make a pass to player 4, as shown by the letter A in the diagram.

3. When player 4 gets the ball, he will immediately dodge the backside of the goal as diagramed. As soon as player 4 catches the pass from player 1, player 2 should begin to make a quick cut to set a pick for player number 3.

4. Player 4 is now in the middle of his dodge and player 3 is in the middle of his cut.

5. Player 4 will make the pass, as diagramed by the letter B, to player 3 cutting. When the ball is caught, player 3 will take a shot.

6. This drill will be run 4 times with each player taking a turn in each position. Player 1 replaces 2, 2 replaces 3, 3 replaces 4, and 4 replaces 1.

7. When all 4 players have gone, the next group goes.

Coaching Tips

1. Slowly walk through this drill the first time. Be sure all the players understand what position they are replacing and what is expected of them at each position.

2. Teach the players that this is a basic fundamental drill that teaches how to attack the weak side after drawing a slide on the strong side.

3. Be sure the kids understand that this can be used in game situations. Players should realize that they are not going to score every time; however, working together as a group will give their team a better chance to score.

3 Man Crease Shooting

17

Set-Up1. Drill starts with two even lines. 2. Lines 1 and 2 line up along the

restraining lines above the alley and facing each other.

3. One person will start in the low middle crease diagramed by the number 3 above. This person will be the first shooter.

4. Line 1 has all of the balls.

Instructions1. On the coach’s whistle, the first

player in line 1 throws a pass to the player in the front of line 2.

2. The player in line 2 then throws the ball back to the player from line 1.

3. After player 2 passes he will cut hard to the low crease. At the same time number 3 begins to cut high as the ball is passed from player 2 to player 1.

4. When the player from line 1 catches the ball he immediately feeds player 3 cutting high.

5. Player 3 then turns and takes a shot. 6. Player 1 runs to line number 2 after

he passes to 3.

7. Rotation is line 1 to 2, 2 to 3, and 3 to 1.

Coaching Tips 1. Timing is the key here. The drill

imitates a low to high crease cut. Be sure the cutter starts low. This means the player from line 2 must get down to the crease right after he passes. The cutter, or player number 3, should start the cut when the ball is midway between player 2 and player 1. This gives player 1 a second or two to get the ball under control before it is passed.

2. Be sure the cutter rounds out his cut before shooting. This prevents turning and shooting off the back foot.

3. Be sure the passes are made with the feet moving. Passers should not be standing still.

Variations 1. Bring the two lines down low. This

will make the drill an imitation of a high to low crease cut. Be sure the shooter is shooting quickly. (Quick Stick)

Page 26: THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK - Amazon Web Services · The Little Black Book of Lacrosse Drills ... The letters indicated between the drill name and page number describe what fundamental

DoubleShot

18

Set-Up

1. Divide your players up into 4 even lines. Two lines will begin 10 yards off each side of the crease on GLE facing the restraining line. Two lines will begin at the restraining line directly across from the first two lines. See diagram.

2. Balls should be placed in the lines that are shaded black in the diagram.

Instructions

1. The drill begins when the two players in the front of the black lines are signaled to start.

2. The players will throw a pass (a) to the player in the line directly in front of them.

3. Once the player makes the pass he will then make a “V” cut toward the center of the field and then run back toward the player to whom he passed the ball (b).

4. Once the player sets his pick, the player who caught the ball will make a cut with the ball off the pick (c) and take a quick shot.

5. Notice that the player who catches the ball on the GLE is shooting a question mark shot to the inside compared to the player who catches the ball at the restraining line and cuts towards the middle of the field for a shot.

Coaching Tips

1. Shooting off a screen or pick is one of the best ways to disguise a shot or make it hard for the goalie to see. Try to teach your players to be in the shooting position as they come off the pick. If players come off the pick ready to shoot their shots will often fly by people who are sliding towards them. This makes it difficult for goalies to pick up the ball when it is coming off a sliding player’s hips, knees and ankles.

2. Switch the position of the balls so players can practice shooting from all 4 spots. The diagram is set up for one example; of course, the balls can start in all 4 lines.

3. Be sure your players shoot as soon as they run off the pick. If they don’t, some of your players will be complaining of bruises!

Page 27: THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK - Amazon Web Services · The Little Black Book of Lacrosse Drills ... The letters indicated between the drill name and page number describe what fundamental

Tiger Shooting

19

Set-Up1. Four even lines, diagramed as

numbers 1, 2, 3, and 4. 2. Lines 1 and 2 are 8-10 yards off

crease on GLE. 3. Lines 3 and 4 are located at the

corners of the restraining box. 4. Two players, one from line 1 and

the other from line 2 will start the drill as pick men.

5. Line 1 is the pick-man indicated by the letter (b). Line 2 is the pick man indicated by the letter (a).

6. Balls are in lines 1 and 2.

Instructions1. Drill starts on the coach’s whistle. 2. On the whistle the first player in line

3 makes a hard sweep cut running off a high pick set by player (a). He will receive a pass from the player in line 1 and then take a shot

3. On the same whistle the first player in line 4 makes a low hard cut off player (b). When he comes off the low pick he will receive a pass from the person in line 2 and then take a shot.

4. As the players from line 3 and 4 come off the picks and take their shots, the two players picking (a and b) then roll off the pick. Player (a) rolls low towards line 2 where he will receive a pass from the second

person in line 2 and then take a shot. Player (b) cuts

player in line 2. Player B rolls high and receives a pass from the second player in line 1 and then he takes a shot.

5. The first players in lines 1 and 2 now become the pick men. Line 1 goes to position (b), line 2 goes to position (a).

6. The original pick men (a and b) switch into lines 3 and 4.

7. The shooters go to the back of lines 1 and 2.

Coaching Tips 1. Be sure to stress to the team that the

players in lines 1 and 2 will have to make 2 passes before becoming the pick-men. They must pay attention to the play.

2. Be sure the players cutting run past the pick-man’s shoulder.

3. The drill is designed to make sure the roll is in the opposite direction of the shooter. Stress this as it is important in games to keep the crease spread and orderly.

4. The drill will start off a bit slow until it is understood. Demonstrate where players in position (a) and (b) should roll. This will help the drill run more efficiently.

Page 28: THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK - Amazon Web Services · The Little Black Book of Lacrosse Drills ... The letters indicated between the drill name and page number describe what fundamental

4 Line Pick and Cut Shooting

20

Set-Up1. Divide the team into 4 lines. See

diagram for line locations. 2. Balls will be placed in either the top

two or bottom two lines depending on the drill.

Instructions1. The first player in the top left line

will throw a pass (1) to the first player in the top right line.

2. On this pass the lower left player will “V” cut to set a pick for the top player.

3. The top right player then passes down (2) to the bottom right player.

4. The top left player runs off of the pick. The pick man also rolls down to the back pipe.

5. The final pass from the low right player will be to either the cut man (a) or the pick man (b) for the shot.

6. The diagram above is for when the pass starts with the top left player. The diagram below represents when the ball starts with the top right player.

7. The players stay on the same side of the field. They rotate between top and bottom lines.

Coaching Tips 1. Players will understand the passing and cutting aspect of this drill. What players will not practice is setting an effective pick and rolling off of it once the cutter has passed. A good pick will involve a disguised V-cut toward the player who is getting picked. This way the defense will not easily detect the pick being set. For example, if a player runs in a straight line toward his teammate it is not hard to figure out what he is trying to do. However, if he starts by making a quick cut toward the center of the crease and then comes back to the man the pick will develop more efficiently. This also gives the player awaiting the pick a chance to time his cut so that he can catch his defender off guard.

Ball Low Instructions 1. When the ball is down low cut out

the first pass across the front of the net.

2. Thus the first pass (1) starts by going to the top line.

3. As this pass occurs, the top right man cuts down to set a pick for the bottom right man.

4. The bottom right man comes off the pick and gets a pass (2) from the top left player.

5. He then takes a shot.6. See the diagrams to follow the

sequence properly.

4 Line Exchange Shooting

22

Set-Up

1. Divide the players up into four even lines. The lines should be placed on the field as diagramed 1-4.

2. Each line should have balls.

Instructions

1. The top two lines (1 and 2) start with a ball.

2. These players make a pass to line 3 and 4 as shown by “A”.

3. When the players in line 3 and 4 catch the ball they will run behind the goal and exchange sides. Remember that their sticks should be to the outside.

4. As the players from line 3 and 4 exchange, the players from line 1 and 2 who passed the ball will time a sweeping cut by exchanging up top.

5. These cutting players will receive a pass back from the person from whom they originally threw a pass to. Line 1 will receive from line 3 and line 2 will receive from line 4 as shown by pass “B”.

6. The drill ends with a shot on goal. 7. The shooting players switch to the

passing lines and the passing players switch to the shooting lines. Line 1 switches to line 4, line 2 switches to

line 3, line 3 switches to line 2 and line 4 switches to line 1.

8. After repeating a few times, have the players switch sides to practice passing and shooting with their other hand.

Coaching Tips

1. Balls are in the lower lines for back-up in case a ball is overthrown.

2. As a coach you can switch the shots around by placing the balls in the bottom lines and reversing the drill. This will allow the top lines to make the passes.

3. Instruct the players to catch and throw with their proper hands. This means in line 1 they will pass right-handed and shoot left-handed. Line 2 will pass left-handed and shoot right-handed. Line 3 will catch left-handed and pass right-handed and finally line 4 will catch right-handed and pass left-handed.

4. If you choose to reverse the drill have the players make question mark shots down low as they drive the side of the crease.

5. Make sure that the players are “V” cutting to receive passes and then exploding to their backside drives. Shooters should make sure that they time their cuts properly.

Page 31: THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK - Amazon Web Services · The Little Black Book of Lacrosse Drills ... The letters indicated between the drill name and page number describe what fundamental

36 Exchange Shooting

23

Set-Up1. Divide the shooting players into five

even lines. The lines will be placed on the field as shown by the “Xs” in the above diagram.

2. The lines that are in the middle of the restraining box and at the top of the restraining box will all have balls.

InstructionsPart A

1. The first players in the top two lines will throw a pass (1) down to the bottom lines.

2. After the pass, the two top players will exchange by cutting across the top as diagramed. At the same time the players in the bottom lines who caught the ball will exchange behind the goal as diagramed.

3. The low players will then pass (2) back to the top players who originally passed them the ball and they will take a shot on goal.

Part B 4. After the two players exchange up

top and receive the pass from the exchanging bottom players the next two players in the bottom lines will

cut above the two shooting players as diagramed.

5. These players will receive a pass from the players on the opposite mid box line (3).

6. The two cutting players will take a shot after receiving the pass.

7. The drill then starts over. Rotation of players is as follows: top right moves to the bottom left line, top left moves to the bottom right line, bottom left line moves to the mid right line, bottom right moves to the mid left line, the mid left line moves to the top left line. Finally the mid right line moves up to the top right line.

Coaching Tips 1. Passing, catching, and shooting with

the proper hand is essential in this drill. The players move a lot. Even though it is designed as a shooting drill it helps to teach players the importance of switching hands, dodging backside, stick protection, how to mirror a teammate and how to catch and throw on the run. Remember sticks should be facing the outside of the field.

2. For this drill to be successful be sure that it is explained in detail. Players an get confused easily if they don’t understand.

Warm-Up Train

26

Set-Up

1. Divide your team into groups of 6 or 7.

2. Have 3 players line up on the end line facing the other centerline. (See number 1 in diagram)

3. Have three players line up at the centerline facing line number 1. (See number 3 in diagram)

4. Have 1 player in the middle facing line number 1. (See number 2 in diagram.)

5. All of the balls should be in line number 1. You should only use one ball. Have extras lying around for backup.

Instructions

1. On the whistle, the first player in line number 1 will pass the ball to player number 2. Once he passes he will sprint to refill the number 2 spot.

2. Player number 2 will catch the ball and roll in the designated direction. If instructions are to catch the ball

in your left hand then the player will roll clockwise. Once he turns, he will pass the ball to player 3 and then sprint to the end of line 3.

3. When the player in line 3 catches the ball he will throw the up and over pass to the player in line number 1. Once he passes he will sprint to the end of line number 1.

4. The drill continues until the coach stops the drill.

Coaching Tips

1. This drill is great for conditioning and medium length passes. The players sprint while handling the ball and then get a quick rest.

2. Be sure that the players in the middle (number 2’s) are rolling correctly. The idea is to practice the technique of protecting the stick while exploding out of a roll. If the player rolls the wrong way then he will be exposing his stick for a certain check.

Page 35: THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK - Amazon Web Services · The Little Black Book of Lacrosse Drills ... The letters indicated between the drill name and page number describe what fundamental

Quick Passing

27

Set-Up

1. Divide the team into groups of three.

2. Two of the players line up along the restraining lines up and down the field, indicated by the numbers 1 and 2.

3. The third player is standing in the middle of the two players as indicated by the letter P.

4. Balls are in the sticks of the outside players.

Instructions

1. On the coach’s whistle the player in the middle will run towards the outside player (1) and receive a pass.

2. Player (P) will immediately pass the ball back to player 1 (quick stick) and then turn and run towards player 2.

3. Player 2 will then throw a pass to player (P).

4. Player (P) will then pass the ball back to player 2 quickly, turn and run back towards player 1 where he will receive another pass.

5. The middle player will run back and forth catching and throwing passes for 1 minute. Then switch the players.

6. Player 1 goes to the middle and player P goes to line 1.

7. This drill should take 6 minutes. One time through with both hands.

Coaching Tips

1. Keep the intensity level up. Have the players work hard.

2. Be sure the passes don’t come too early or it will defeat the purpose of running back and forth. The players will not get that necessary short sprint workout vital to lacrosse.

3. Be sure the passes are as quick as possible. Upper level players should not be cradling. Lower level players should not be taking more than three steps after they catch the ball.

4. Be sure the passers are moving their feet while play is going on. Do not allow them to pick up bad habits like passing with their feet not moving.

Variations

1. Have the outside players roll the ball and the middle player can pick up the gb and then pass it back.

2. Have the players catch left and throw right.

3. Add another player and form a triangle. Have the players run in a big traingle passing and catching quickly.

Page 36: THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK - Amazon Web Services · The Little Black Book of Lacrosse Drills ... The letters indicated between the drill name and page number describe what fundamental

Quarterback Breaks

28

Set-Up

1. Divide the team up into 2 even lines. 2. Have each line start on GLE at the

corner of the restraining box. 3. Divide all of the balls evenly

between the two lines. 4. Place a goalie in the net at each end

of the field.

Instructions

1. Designate a line to go first. 2. The player in that line will throw a

pass to the goalie. 3. Once he throws the pass he will

sprint up the edge of the restraining box until he is about five yards from the top of it. Once he hits this mark he should cut hard toward the middle of the field. This is diagramed above for both lines.

4. When the player is approaching the middle of the field the goalie will throw an outlet pass to him.

5. Once he catches the ball he should sprint to the other end of the field.

6. When he is about 15 yards out he should take a shot on the run at the

net. The goalie can be either in the net or not to make the save.

7. The player will then line up on GLE and wait to repeat the drill in the opposite direction. Players should line up on the same side of the field as they previously were. This will ensure that they get practice catching with both hands.

Coaching Tips

1. This drill is for the goalies. They should concentrate on making good outlet passes.

2. If needed place cones on the field if you would like the goalie to practice throwing to different areas. Like in football give the players a route to run!

3. Once the drill has been completed once or twice begin to challenge the goalie. For example, make him run around the crease as if an attack man were chasing him before he makes the throw. Have him run out to a cone and roll back to the goal before he throws. This will give the goalie a chance to make passes that he would have to do in a game like situation.

4. If shooting on the goalie at the other end, place a marker out for players to shoot behind. It is needless for a goalie to get hurt.

Page 37: THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK - Amazon Web Services · The Little Black Book of Lacrosse Drills ... The letters indicated between the drill name and page number describe what fundamental

Wheel and Spoke Drill

29

Set-Up

1. Four players stand back to back, with enough room to pass, as diagramed above with numbers 1-4.

2. Four players line up 10-15 yards away from the inside players as diagramed above. 5 is 10 yards from 1, 8 is 10 yards from 4, etc.

3. All of the players numbered 1-4 have a ball in their stick.

Instructions

1. On the coach’s whistle, the players on the inside will pass the ball to the player lined up across from them (1 to 5, 2 to 6, 3 to 7, 4 to 8).

2. This is a drill where the players on the outside continue to run and move the ball quickly. For example, 1 passes to 5 as 5 is running. 5 passes back to 1 and continues to run. 5 will then get a pass from 2 and pass back to 2. 1 will then pass to 8 after getting the ball back from 5.

3. This drill is a big wheel where the players have to receive a pass and then pass back to one of the players in the middle.

4. The players continue to pass until the coach stops the drill. Switch the players. Inside players move to the outside, outside players move to the inside.

Coaching Tips

1. Emphasize quick ball movement. 2. Start at 50% speed for the outside

and build up from there. 3. There should be very little cradling.

Pass, catch and throw. 4. Be sure players don’t close the gap

between the passers. Put out cones if necessary to keep the outside from moving in.

5. Run the drill in both directions. This will work both left and right hands.

Variations

1. If numbers are limited you can have the drill completed by groups of six.

2. To speed up the drill have five on the inside and five on the outside.

3. Have inside guys roll first ball out. Outside players can then pick up GB and pass it back.

Squares Passing

30

Set Up 1. Have four lines, two to three players

in each line.2. The lines should be positioned in a

square. If you want to practice long passing the square should be large, and if you want to practice short passing the square should be small.

Instructions

1. Line 1 will run towards line 4, line 4 towards line 3, line 3 towards line 2, and line 2 towards line 1.

2. The ball will be passed to the line in front each time.

3. Passes should be made on the run to players on the run.

Variations

1. Right-handed passing. Sticks on the inside and outside.

2. Left-handed passing. Sticks on the outside and the inside.

3. Ground balls lefty and righty.

4. Meet the pass, roll to the outside to make the pass. (See Diagram B)

5. Split dodge after the catch before the next pass.

6. Shovel passes (passes that come from having the stick near the ground) both left and right.

Coaching Tips

1. Spread the boxes out all over the field. Nothing is worse than missed passes rolling into other boxes and having players run into the middle to get their ball.

2. Have extra balls available for each square.

3. Make it fun. Switch it up constantly, meaning big squares to little squares, right and left hands, etc.

4. And most important make sure there is communication. Kids need to learn early how to communicate.

Hot Potato Passing

31

Set-Up1. Place six players in the positions

marked “P” on the field. These players will be passers.

2. Have the rest of the team form two lines beside the goal. The line that is black will pass and catch left handed. The white line will pass and catch right handed.

3. Each player in line should have a ball.

Instructions1. The first player in each line will

sprint up the field and pass the ball to the first player in the “P” position. He will then receive a pass back while continuing to sprint.

2. The player will then make a pass to the second “P” player, receive the ball back and pass one more time to the final “P” player.

3. After the player has made all three passes and received the ball back he will end with a shot on goal.

4. Once, at the end, the players will line back up on the same side of the field and repeat the drill. This time they will be passing and

catching with their opposite hands.

5. If a player throws a bad pass or misses a return pass he will continue to sprint to the other end without having the opportunity to shoot. Once players begin picking up balls it will slow the drill and cause a back up.

6. Be sure there are balls at both ends. This will help the drill proceed much faster.

7. Players should start as soon as the first pass is returned to the player in front of them.

Coaching Tips 1. This is a great warm up drill or

practice ending drill. It conditions the player and helps them to develop necessary skills of passing and catching quickly while on the run.

2. The passers in the middle should switch up accordingly. The passers in the middle should also have their feet moving while passing.

Diamond Roll Dodges

32

Set-Up1. Divide the team into groups of 8 or

12.2. The players will assemble into a

diamond with 15-20 yards between each line as diagramed.

3. Balls will start in line 1.

Instructions1. Player 1 will run toward line 2. He

will pass the ball to the first player in line 2.

2. The player in line 2 will immediately pass the ball back to player 1.

3. Player 1 will then continue to run toward player 2. When he gets close he will perform a roll dodge to avoid player 2’s check. Player 2 can try to check player 1.

4. Once player 1 rolls away from trouble, he will continue toward line 3. He will pass the ball to player 3 and get an immediate return pass. Once again player 1 will continue toward player 3 and perform a roll dodge when he gets close. Player 3 will attempt to check player 1.

5. Player 1 will then perform the same action with player 4.

6. Once player 1 rolls away from player 4 he will return to line 1.

7. Each time a player from line 2, 3, or 4 attempts a check, he will move to the end of his line.

8. Once all the players in line 1 have had their turn they will pass their ball to the players in line 2. The drill continues until all players from each line have had a turn.

Coaching Tips 1. The diagram is set up for the players

to run clockwise. In order for the roll dodge to work in this direction the players must approach the player with the ball in their left hand. As the players roll they will use their body to shield the check, transfer the stick from their left hand to their right hand and then continue the roll. Instruct your players to pass with their right hand but to catch with their left hand. This way they don’t have to switch hands after receiving the pass.

2. Be sure to demonstrate the proper techniques of a roll dodge before you attempt this drill.

3. Switch the direction of the drill to ensure that the players get practice roll dodging in both directions.

4. This drill is great for beginners. When using this drill at the high school level make it a warm-up drill so the players maintain focus.

2 Man Pass & GB Clear

33

Set-Up1. Two goalies are positioned on either

side of the crease. 2. The rest of the team is divided into

two lines at center as diagramed. 3. Balls are placed evenly among the

two lines at center.

Instructions1. The first players in the black and

white line throw a long pass to the goalie on their respected side of the field.

2. After the pass both players cut down and exchange just inside the restraining box.

3. Once the players have exchanged, they will receive a pass from the goalie. (The opposite goalie that the players threw the first pass to).

4. Once the players have caught the pass from the goalie they will sprint with the ball up-field.

5. As soon as the players cross center the player from the white line will roll a ground ball across the field to the player from the black line while on the run.

6. As soon as the player rolls the ball

the player from the black line will throw him a pass. Now the player in white will have a ball in his stick and the player in black will not.

7. The player in black will scoop up the ground ball and immediately roll the ball back across the field in front of the player in white. As soon as the player in black rolls the ball, the player in white will throw a pass back to the player in black.

8. The player in white will then scoop up the ground ball and both players will finish by sprinting to the end line.

9. These players will wait until all players have gone and then they will return to the middle of the field and begin the drill over.

Coaching Tips 1. This drill helps to develop a few

important techniques. Goalies need to make good clearing passes. Players need to lead their partner not only with a pass but with a ground ball as well. Players should make a minimum of one pass and retrieve one ground ball.

Page 42: THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK - Amazon Web Services · The Little Black Book of Lacrosse Drills ... The letters indicated between the drill name and page number describe what fundamental

Goalie Outlet Passing

34

Set-Up

1. Place two goalies in the net at opposite sides of the crease as diagramed.

2. Divide the team up into two even lines. All players should be holding a ball in their stick.

3. The player lines should be 5-7 yards to the side of each goalpost.

4. Place two coaches or players at the centerline.

Instructions

1. The first person in each of the two player lines, represented by the numbers 1 and 2 in the diagram, will start the drill by passing or rolling the ball to their respective goalie.

2. Once the players have passed the ball to their goalie, they will immediately sprint up-field.

3. The goalie will then pass (C) to the sprinting player.

4. After the player catches the ball, he will pass (2) it to the coach or player standing just after center.

5. The coach or player will then pass (3) the ball back to the player. Once the player catches the ball, he will continue on a sprint down the side and take a shot.

6. The players will then curl to the side and stay down at the shooting end. When the goalies pass the ball to the last players in line they will then sprint down to the other end and the drill will resume.

7. Both lines are going at the same time. This helps to conserve time.

Coaching Tips

1. The goal of this drill is to help your goaltenders practice throwing outlets to the players. Have them practice throwing the ball hard “On a Rope”, or have them throw the “High Arc.” The more repetitions your goalies get the better they will be at throwing the ball mistake free!

Page 43: THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK - Amazon Web Services · The Little Black Book of Lacrosse Drills ... The letters indicated between the drill name and page number describe what fundamental

Quick D-Outs

35

Set-Up

1. Line up your short stick players at opposite corners of the restraining box as diagramed above. You will need to divide them up evenly.

2. Split up your long poles into two even lines. They should line up five yards in front of the crease facing the corner of the field.

3. Balls should be placed with the short sticks at the top of the restraining box.

4. A cone or marker should be placed 5-7 yards in from the center of the restraining line as diagramed by a black diamond.

Instructions

1. The short stick player will roll a ball down the side of the restraining line. The ball should be rolled somewhere past the GLE but not out of bounds.

2. Once the ball is rolled the short stick will begin a sprint to the cone in the middle of the field. He will run around it and then begin a sprint up-field toward the wing lines.

3. While the short stick is sprinting around the cone the defenseman will sprint towards the groundball, pick it up, and begin to turn up-field as if he was clearing the ball.

4. Once the defenseman sees the short stick he will throw a pass to him on the run. The short stick will catch the ball and then sprint to the end of the other short stick line.

5. The drill resumes until the coach tells the players to switch sides. This way defenseman get practice throwing both left and right handed.

Coaching Tips

1. Judge the speed of your players. If the defensemen are getting to the ball too fast and have to wait to pass, back their line up or shorten the length of the short sticks run.

2. Allow each defenseman to get 10 repetitions before switching sides.

3. If you want your players to shoot in this drill move the net over 10-15 yards and have the short sticks take 15 yard shots on the run at both ends. If not have your goalies throw long passes or skip rope.

Page 44: THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK - Amazon Web Services · The Little Black Book of Lacrosse Drills ... The letters indicated between the drill name and page number describe what fundamental

O’Neil Drill

36

Set-Up1. Have eight even lines. Four lines on

each side of the field with 15-20 yards between each line. Lines are numbered 1-8 in the diagram above.

2. There should be balls in each line as backup when balls are dropped or thrown away.

3. Players in lines 1, 3, 5, and 7 will catch and throw right-handed. Players in lines 2, 4, 6, and 8 will throw and catch left handed.

Instructions1. This is a warm-up passing drill. The

first player in line 1 will run with a ball towards line 2. When the player in line 1 reaches midfield the first player in line 2 begins to run towards line 3. Player 1 will pass the ball to player 2.

2. Player 2 will catch the ball left handed over the shoulder and then turn and make a pass to the player running from line 3 to line 4.

3. This continues all the way up the field. Line 4 passes to line 5, line 5 to line 6, line 6 to line 7 and finally line 7 to line 8.

4. When line 8 gets the ball he begins a hard sprint through the middle of the field back towards line 1. When he gets close to line 1 he will pass the

ball to the beginning player who will then start the drill over again.

5. Add 2, 3, 4, or 5 balls as the team gets better. This speeds up the drill and makes the kids concentrate and execute.

Coaching Tips 1. Be sure players are catching and

throwing properly when they are participating. Players in the odd number lines should be catching and throwing right-handed. Players in the even numbered lines should be catching and throwing left-handed.

2. This is a passing drill so fundamentals should be stressed. Stick up, overhand passes, give a target, call for the ball, lead the man, elbows up, etc.

3. Challenge the kids. Adding balls is a great way to have the players try to reach a goal.

Variations 1. Add more balls. Try to challenge

the team to keep a certain number of balls in the air without a drop.

2. Do this drill as a ground ball drill. Have the players roll the ball to each other. This is a great way to practice scooping balls on the run.

3. Have the players catch one way (right or left) and throw another (right or left).

Page 45: THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK - Amazon Web Services · The Little Black Book of Lacrosse Drills ... The letters indicated between the drill name and page number describe what fundamental

Eight Man Run

37

Set-Up1. Divide the team into 8 even lines. It

is OK to have long poles and short sticks combined.

2. Line the players up on the field as shown by the arrows labeled 1-4 in the diagram. The arrow indicates the direction in which the line should be facing.

3. Balls should be placed in the two corner lines as indicated by the black circles.

Instructions1. On the whistle, the players in line 1

will begin with a ball. 2. They will begin by run toward line

2, which is in front of them at the top of the restraining box. The player in line 2 will come toward the player from line 1. When he receives the pass, he will turn up-field in a full sprint. The player from line 1 will join line 2.

3. Once the player from line 2 crosses back over the restraining line the player from line 3 will begin to sprint up-field toward the alley. He will receive a pass from player 2. Player 2 will then join line 3.

4. Player 3 will catch the ball and sprint towards the alley. Once he crosses the restraining line the player from line 4 can begin to sprint toward the ball. Player 3 will pass to player 4 and then join line 4.

5. When player 4 catches the ball he will roll towards the outside of the field and begin a sprint behind the goal back toward line 1. He will look to pass to the player from line 1 who will come to meet the ball. Once he passes he will join line 1.

6. The player from line 1 will roll toward the end line and then begin to sprint up-field to make the pass to the player from line 2.

7. Switch directions to make the passes and rolls with the opposite hand.

Coaching Tips 1. Add as many balls as you want.

(Four seems to work best.) Start a new ball once the pass is two away. This helps to get more runs, more touches and prevents any standing around.

2. Be sure the kids sprint between lines and while carrying the ball. This is a great practice warm-up drill because of all the running and passing involved.

Page 46: THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK - Amazon Web Services · The Little Black Book of Lacrosse Drills ... The letters indicated between the drill name and page number describe what fundamental

10 Spot Passing/Shooting

38

Set-Up1. Start with a goalie in both nets. 2. Two lines will be across from the

goalies along GLE outside of the box (A and D).

3. Two lines (B) will be along the center line facing line (A).

4. Two lines (C) will be at the center X facing the sidelines towards line (B).

5. Balls will be with the goalies either in the net or just to the side of the net.

6. A single shooter “X” will line up on the high crease facing line (D)

Instructions1. Coach asks the goalies if they are

ready. 2. On the whistle, goalies yell,

“Break.”3. The two players in the lines (A)

break, the goalie throws them a pass (1).

4. The players in line (B) start to cut towards the ball once it is caught and will receive a pass (2) from line (A). The player in line B will then turn up field and look to pass (3) to the player in line (C).

5. The player in line (C) will then break up the side and look to pass (4) to the player cutting towards the ball from line (D).

6. The player from line (D) will then immediately pass (5) to the cutter (X) on the crease who will then take a shot (6).

7. The goalie will then pick up a ball, yell, “Break”, and the drill starts again.

8. Players follow their pass to the next spot. Shooters (X) will go to line (A) to start the break.

Coaching Tips 1. Run this drill from both sides

ensuring that players get practice with both hands.

2. Be sure the players call for the ball, do not cut too early and move the ball quickly.

3. Lines on most teams will only be 2-3 players deep.

4. Be sure the crease man is setting up high and away and waits for line (D) to catch the ball before he cuts.

Variations 1. Run the drill in both directions. When

goalies pass to line (A) all players should have their sticks in their right hand. If the goalie passes to line (D), all players should have the stick in their left hand.

2. Have the players roll the ball to each other (except passes 1 and 5) to practice ground balls on the run.

Page 47: THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK - Amazon Web Services · The Little Black Book of Lacrosse Drills ... The letters indicated between the drill name and page number describe what fundamental

4 Corner Simultaneous Passing

39

Set-Up1. Divide the team into four even

groups.2. The four groups will line up at the

corners of the restraining boxes as diagramed.

3. Goalies will be in the net. 4. Balls will be evenly distributed

between the 4 lines as diagramed. 5. The goal nets will be placed 5 yards

in front of the restraining line as diagramed.

Instructions1. The diagram above illustrates the

first half of the drill. 2. On the coach’s whistle, the first

player in opposite lines, indicated by the number 2 lines in the diagram, will start with a ball.

3. The players will run towards each other.

4. When the players are 10-15 yards from each other they will throw each other a pass. (This means 2 balls are now in the air)

5. The players will catch the pass from their teammate and then run to the center X.

6. When they get to the center X they will turn and run with the ball towards the goal on the side that they started.

7. When the players are 10 yards out they will take a shot on the run.

8. After the shot is taken they will return to their original line.

9. When the field is clear then the other two opposite lines, as diagramed by the number 1 lines above, will repeat steps 3-7.

Coaching Tips 1. Be patient when you start this drill.

The players will be throwing balls all over the place.

2. This drill takes practice. However, it will build great hand eye coordination.

3. Stress to your players to really concentrate on making a good pass. Aim for their partners head.

4. Be sure your players don’t get too close when shooting.

5. The drill should be done with both right and left hands. Designate lines number 1 to start left handed and lines number 2 to start right handed. Have the players switch lines after five minutes.

Variations 1. Instead of passing the ball in the air

have them roll the ball to each other. This helps to practice picking up ground balls on the run.

Page 48: THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK - Amazon Web Services · The Little Black Book of Lacrosse Drills ... The letters indicated between the drill name and page number describe what fundamental

4 Corner Over the Shoulder Passing

40

Set-Up1. The goals should be moved up ten

yards from their normal spot in the crease. A goalie is in the net.

2. Divide the team into 4 even lines and have them line up at the corners of the restraining box as shown above.

3. Balls should be divided evenly in the 4 lines.

4. The first two players in each line are involved in the drill and should be ready to go.

Instructions1. This diagram shows the first half of

the drill involving the two opposite lines.

2. On the coach’s whistle the first player in each line (1) has a ball and throws a long pass (A) to the second player in the opposite line (2).

3. After the number 1s pass to the number 2s they will break up field towards the far goal.

4. The number 1s will look back and receive a pass (B) from the number 2s in their original line as diagramed.

5. When they catch the ball they will take a shot on the run at the goal. After the shot they will run to the end of the line on their original side but at the opposite end.

6. The number 2s will then become the number 1s and will be replaced by the third person in line.

7. The other two lines will then do the same thing. When they are done the original number 2s will throw the long pass. The drill continues.

Coaching Tips 1. Be sure all the players are paying

attention. If they are talking in line then they will not realize that it is their turn to catch the long pass and the drill will be interrupted.

2. Do this drill as a walk through first. It will save you time in the long run, not to mention your voice.

3. If the players are having difficulty making the long pass move the lines up a bit until the players are in range.

4. Take the time to explain this drill. This drill involves thinking and awareness.

5. Make sure players are attacking the ball when they are receiving a pass. Passes will be long and short. Don’t allow them to give up on the ball.

Comments1. This is a great drill that makes your

players think about more than one thing. They have to pay attention to everything that is going on or else the drill will be stalled.

Page 50: THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK - Amazon Web Services · The Little Black Book of Lacrosse Drills ... The letters indicated between the drill name and page number describe what fundamental

1 V 1 Scramble

42

Set-Up1. Two players, designated as “O” and

“D”, line up back-to-back with a ball between their feet.

2. A goalie can be in the net. 3. Two lines of extra players assemble

on the side, as designated by the black and white arrows.

4. Set up two cones. Cones are to be five yards away from the starting spot in both directions. If you practice on a football field this will not be necessary.

Instructions1. On the whistle, both players sprint

in opposite directions towards the 5 yard marker.

2. The players will bend down and touch the line before they head back toward the ball.

3. When they have touched the line they can then run back and compete over the ground ball.

4. Whichever player wins the ground ball battle becomes the offensive player. The losing player becomes the defensive player.

5. The offensive player then tries to score on the goal while the defensive player tries to stop him.

6. Once play is complete the next two players restart the drill.

Coaching Tips1. Make this drill fun for the players.

Competition gets heavy when there are stakes involved. Just be sure to keep it controlled. Some kids tend to get more physical in the heat of the action.

2. Always stress proper defensive strategy based around your team’s defensive strategy.

3. Many times during a game someone wins a ground ball and then drives to the net. Players have to practice regrouping and finding a way to get back and stop them.

Variations 1. Perform this at different locations

on the field to practice dodging and defending in different areas.

2. Make this a game between two teams. This always increases the intensity.

3. Call out “LADDER.” When Ladder is called the two players who were previously competing stay in. The offensive player becomes the crease man and the defensive player covers him. The next two player’s battle and now the 1 V 1 is a 2 V 2. These players can also stay making the next battle a 3 V 3. Keep building the ladder as high as you want. Past experience has proven that anything past 5 gets confusing unless you designate who is on offense and defense before each 1 V 1 battle.

Page 51: THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK - Amazon Web Services · The Little Black Book of Lacrosse Drills ... The letters indicated between the drill name and page number describe what fundamental

Corner Touch GB’s

43

Set-Up1. Start with two players lined up on

the restraining line. Each player should face the opposite direction.

2. The coach stands between the two players with a bucket of balls.

3. The extra players form two lines behind the coach.

4. A goalie is in the net.

Instructions1. The coach will blow the whistle to

start the drill. The two players will sprint to the restraining wing line and touch it with their stick.

2. After they touch the restraining line with their stick they will turn and sprint back.

3. The coach will roll a ball on to the field somewhere. The two players will then compete for the ground ball.

4. The player who wins the ground ball will become the offensive player; the other player will become the defensive player.

5. Once a shot has been taken the drill is complete and the next two players should be set to start.

Coaching Tips 1. The goal of this drill is for players to

quickly react to a turnover in the form of a groundball. Once the players turn back, roll the ball to an area where both players will eventually meet. This takes away any speed advantage.

2. This drill becomes fun as well as competitive when the lines are broken up into two teams. Tell your players that everyone is going to go twice, and the team that scores the most goals wins. This motivation should produce passion and drive.

Variations 1. If you want to speed up the pace of

this drill then add two more players into the mix and make it a 2v2. This helps to utilize more of the players so they are not standing around. This also helps to develop communication and teamwork among players. Finally, it helps develop two-man defensive and two-man offensive skills.

2. You can also add two more players to turn this drill into a 3v3. When doing 3v3s, it is helpful to give the players a few obstacles to overcome, such as making 3 passes before they shoot, everyone touching the ball before a shot and using the restraining box for a boundary.

Page 52: THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK - Amazon Web Services · The Little Black Book of Lacrosse Drills ... The letters indicated between the drill name and page number describe what fundamental

London Bridge

44

Set-Up

1. This is a great drill for beginners.2. Divide the team up into groups of

three.3. Have two players place a ball in

between each of them. Then have them cross their sticks over the top of the ball. Both of these directions can be seen in the diagrams A and B.

4. Players 2 and 3 should be facing each other.

5. Player 1 will stand about 5 yards back from the ball as seen in diagram A.

Instructions

1. Each player will take five turns running and scooping up the ball.

2. Since the ball is located underneath two sticks, players must learn to get low and learn to run through a ground ball with two hands on their stick.

3. The players that are crossing their sticks should be holding their sticks with one hand and applying as much pressure as they can with the one hand. This will give the person picking up the GB a bit of pressure that he will have to fight through to pick the ball up cleanly.

4. Once the player picks up the ball he should run through the two players and then take 4-5 steps afterward so he feels as though he is exploding through the ground ball.

5. Once he finishes his explosion, pass the ball back to the two players and repeat from the other side. Each player should go 5 times and then switch.

6. Continue until coach is satisfied.

Coaching Tips

1. Walk around and make sure kids are holding their sticks with two hands, getting low and exploding through the ground ball.

Page 53: THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK - Amazon Web Services · The Little Black Book of Lacrosse Drills ... The letters indicated between the drill name and page number describe what fundamental

Ground Ball Criss Cross

45

Set-Up1. Divide the players into 4 even lines.

To have this drill move quickly run it at both ends of the field.

2. Once the players are divided into 4 even lines place them at the four corners of the restraining box as diagramed.

3. Each line should have extra balls for backup.

Instructions1. The player in the top left line will

start with a ball. He will roll the ball (1) and follow his ground ball to the bottom right line as diagramed.

2. The player in the bottom right line will pick up the ground ball and roll it (2) to the player in the top right line as diagramed.

3. The player in the top right line will pick up the ball and roll it (3) to the player in the bottom left line and follow his ground ball.

4. The player in the bottom left line will pick up the ground ball and roll it (4) to the player in the top left line and follow his pass.

5. The drill then continues following this basic pattern.

6. Players are following their ground ball in order to keep the lines even

and have an opportunity to scoop up a ground ball at the 4 locations on the field. By following the pass the players are also moving and getting a bit of conditioning as if they were in a game situation.

Coaching Tips 1. The players should not be scooping

the ground ball up with their feet stationary. Players are to attack the ground ball that is heading in their direction, scoop it up and roll it to the next line in one continuous motion.

2. Players should not scoop up the ball with one hand nor should they use any trickery. This drill is to help players improve the basic fundamentals of scooping up a ground ball on the run and moving it immediately in a different direction.

3. To speed up the drill add another ball or two. This will allow players to get more touches, prevent standing around and make them more aware of the play on the field.

4. Like all ground ball drills, be sure that players are making proper “ball” and “release” calls when they are scooping up ground balls. This helps communication necessary for a game to become automatic.

GB Relays

46

Set-Up

1. Divide the team into four even lines. 2. The lines should be set up along the

end line as shown in the diagram above.

3. Place a ball three yards in front of the restraining line.

Instructions

1. On the whistle, the first player in each line will run without a ball and pick up the far ball. Once they pick up the far ball they will run back to the line where they started. On the way, they will drop the ball from their stick in front of their line.

2. When the player who picked up the first ball crosses the end line then the next person can go. The second person will pick up the ball in front of them and then run down to the restraining line and drop the ball. After he drops the ball, he will sprint back across the starting line. Once he crosses the line the next player will go.

3. This pattern continues until all of the players have gone once. The first team to have all their players cross the line wins!

Coaching Tips

1. Have fun with this! 2. Relays are a great way to disguise

conditioning and agility practice.

Variations

1. Have the players run in all directions, forwards, backwards, side shuffle to the left, side shuffle to the right and karaokes. This way your players will be completing a great agility workout.

2. Have the players pick up any one of two balls. For example, instead of running to the far end to pick up a ball they could pick up the close one and bring it to the far end. Then the second person has to sprint to the far end and bring the ball back. Either way they must carry the ball in one direction. The kids will then begin to think which strategy is better.

3. Have the lines split so that half of the players are behind each ball. The players will then pick up the ball in front of them and run to the other line and drop it. Have the relay last as long as it is meaningful.

Page 55: THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK - Amazon Web Services · The Little Black Book of Lacrosse Drills ... The letters indicated between the drill name and page number describe what fundamental

Sideline GB’s

47

Set-Up

1. Two lines should form at some point on the field along a sideline.

2. The inside “white” line is the player who should end up boxing out the player in the “black” line.

3. A coach stands with the balls just off to the side of the players.

Instructions

1. The coach will roll the ball out so it is moving towards the sideline or parallel to the sideline.

2. As soon as the ball leaves the coach’s stick, the two player’s battle for the ground ball.

3. The goal is to have the inside player “box out” the outside player and then pick up the ball.

4. Once the ball is picked up the drill is over, or the coach can adapt the drill to have the players go 1v1 to the net.

Coaching Tips

1. In the game of lacrosse the ball is lost on the sideline many times during a game. Sometimes this is due to player error, sometimes due to dropped balls, missed saves, etc.

This drill helps kids understand the little things about sideline play.

2. Teach the players to recognize which team the ball goes to. This can be simulated in the drill by designating a line representing the team who touched the ball last.

3. Many things can happen on the sideline. A player can box out another player to prevent him from getting the ball which is a good play as long as he makes it look like he is playing the ball. You don’t want your player to get called for interference. A player can also box out another player so that he can pick the ball up. Teach them that this is a good position to be in because most of the time they will draw a push call from the referee.

4. Other things to consider by adapting the drill can be to box out and kick the ball to an outside player, or “goose the ball” to an area where a teammate can pick up the ball.

Variations

1. Add more lines to simulate any type of game situation that can occur on the sideline.

2. Split the two lines into teams. Have the GB winner pass the ball back to the coach to earn a point. First team to score 7 points wins.

4 Corner Ground Balls

48

Set-Up1. Bring both goals up the field and

place them 5-7 yards inside the restraining box as diagramed.

2. Split the team into 4 even lines. Position two lines at each end on the restraining wing line, even with GLE as diagramed.

3. Place balls in each line. 4. Goalies are in each net.

Instructions

1. The first two players in opposite lines (black arrows) will start with a ball.

2. The players will take a few steps and then roll a ground ball towards the opposite player.

3. After each player has rolled the ground ball to the opposite player each will pick up the ground ball coming towards them.

4. Once the players pick up the ground ball they will turn back towards the goal in the end from which they started. They can then take a shot on the goalie.

5. Once the players have cleared the middle of the field the first player

in each of the other two lines (white arrows) opposite each other will begin.

6. The drill will continue by switching back and forth between opposite lines until the coach stops the drill or the balls have run out.

Coaching Tips

1. Instruct the players to roll the ball just over the center line.

2. Players should be scooping up the ground balls using proper technique. Players should be bending down, scooping with two hands on their stick and making a, “Ball” call as they pick it up.

3. To protect the goalies, designate a certain distance from where the ball is to be shot.

4. Have Fun!

4 Cone Ground Balls

49

Set-Up1. Place four cones 15 yards apart on

the field. You will want to make three or four areas depending on the number of players you have on your team.

2. Divide the team into groups of eight (4 lines of 2) or twelve (4 lines of 3). Each group will practice in a coned area.

3. You can also place four more cones in the shape of a diamond on the inside of the square as markers for the players. This is helpful for young players.

4. Have the players line up facing the center of the square. Thus, the first player up will be the player closest to the middle of the square.

Instructions1. Start with one ball until the players

get the hang of the drill. When they are ready add another ball to speed up the drill.

2. Designate a player to start with a ball. Have him stand in the starting position (see diagram).

3. On the whistle, this player will roll the ball towards the inside cone or to the middle of the square.

4. The player in the line to the right of the starting player, closest to the middle, will sprint out and scoop up the ground ball. After he scoops up the ground ball he will roll to the outside and sprint around the outside cone.

5. Once he gets around the cone he will then roll the ball to the next player in the line to the right.

6. Once this drill is going well add another ball. See if you can get four balls going at once.

Coaching Tips 1. When the players pick up the

ground ball make sure they are using proper technique. The idea for this drill is to attack a moving groundball in a small space. Therefore, make sure the players are getting low, bending at the knees, protecting the outside of the ball with their foot and when rolling out of the ground ball be sure that his stick is tucked in tight where a defenseman cannot check it.

2. Do not overload the lines. There should be no more than three players to a line. If you need to make the lines larger then space the cones farther apart.

3. Feel free to space the cones farther apart to get players to run more. This drill is designed for repetition but in some cases practicing long ground balls is important as well.

4. Have Fun!

3 Person GB’s

50

Set-Up1. Coach stands with the balls at the

restraining line. 2. Three even lines of players

assemble at the centerline as indicated by the 1, 2, and 3 in the diagram.

Instructions1. The coach throws the ball to the

player standing in line 1. 2. The player in line 1 then throws the

ball 20 yards downfield. 3. When player 1 throws the ball, the

players in line 2 and 3 sprint and compete for the ground ball as indicated in diagram A. Player 1 then sprints to the restraining line and back to center.

4. The player who wins the ground ball, shown in diagram B as player 2, will then try and make it out of the restraining box by dodging against the losing player (3).

5. The goal for the losing player (3) is to stop the ground ball winner (2) from getting out of the box.

6. When the player with the ball (2) gets across the restraining line he throws the ball back to player 1.

7. Player 1 then throws the ball back to the coach.

8. Players rotate lines: 1 to 2, 2 to 3, and 3 to 1.

9. The coach restarts the drill by throwing the ball back to player 1.

Coaching Tips 1. The players are to throw the ball 25

yards down field to begin. 2. Try to pair up fast players with fast

players, slow players with slow players, etc.

3. Run this drill at both ends of the field for more conditioning.

4. Have the teams separate into different colors and make a game of it.

Variations 1. Add another line and have it turn

into a 2 v 1 GB drill. 2. Add 2 more lines and turn it into a

2v2 GB drill. 3. Make the number 1 player sprint

longer or substitute sprints with push-ups or sit–ups.

Page 59: THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK - Amazon Web Services · The Little Black Book of Lacrosse Drills ... The letters indicated between the drill name and page number describe what fundamental

Bucket Drill

51

Set-Up1. Divide the team into six even lines.

Have three of the lines in a different color.

2. Have the lines assemble along the centerline.

3. The coach should stand behind the lines with a group of balls.

4. A goalie should be in the net. 5. A bucket, cone or ball bag should be

placed at a random location on the field.

Instructions1. The drill begins with the coach

designating two players from both colors (4 out of the 6 lines) to be the ground ball lines.

2. The other two players, one from each color, will be reserve players.

3. The coach will throw out a ground ball and the 4 designated ground ball players, two from each team, will battle for the ground ball.

4. The winning color will become the offensive players; the losing color will become the defensive players.

5. Once the ground ball is picked up the two reserve players will join the drill. The player from the winning color will join the offense and create a 3v2. The player from the losing color will have to sprint to the

bucket and touch it before he can join the defense.

6. Once the player returns, if in time, the drill becomes a 3v3 until a shot or turnover is created.

7. The coach then blows his whistle and starts the drill over with six new players.

Emphasis1. Ground ball play- it is vital that you

win the groundball if you want a chance to score.

2. Communication- man, ball, release (man to bucket), first pass, second pass and even (when man returns) calls must be made.

3. Offense- draw and dump, quick ball movement, recognize where the defenseman will be rejoining the 3v2 to make it a 3v3.

4. Defense- 3v2 defense. Stack in an “I” with the back player defending the first pass and the top player is recovering to defend the second pass.

Coaching Tips 1. Have fun with this. If the offense

hasn’t scored before the bucket man returns, let them play 3v3 for 15-20 seconds then end the drill. Don’t let it drag on.

2. Make this a full field drill by adding your attack and defense at both ends. Have the GB war happen in the substitution box with the midfielders and remaining attack and defensemen.

Page 60: THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK - Amazon Web Services · The Little Black Book of Lacrosse Drills ... The letters indicated between the drill name and page number describe what fundamental

Face GB’s with Goalie Clear

52

Set-Up1. A goalie is in each net. 2. Two even lines are positioned on the

face-off wings on both sides of the field.

3. A ball is to be placed 3 yards from the face off “X” as indicated by the black circles above.

4. Two cones should be set up 3 yards inside the restraining line towards the corner of each restraining box as diagramed above.

Instructions1. The first player in each line runs as

hard as they can towards the ball on their side of the field.

2. When they get to the ball they should pick it up and, as quickly as possible, throw it back to the goalie (simulating a game when pressure is on and the goalie is the only outlet).

3. Once they pass the ball to the goalie they sprint to the cone and around it.

4. Once around the cone the players should look back and expect an outlet pass from the goalie.

5. Once the player catches the outlet pass they should roll the ball towards center (across the midline) in the vicinity of where the ball originally started.

6. Once the ball crosses the midline the next person in each line repeats the drill.

Coaching Tips 1. Stress the importance of looking

back at the goalie. Too many young players try to run the ball up-field themselves. This creates double and triple-team situations that don’t work out most of the time.

2. Remind the players to never stop moving. Once they make a pass, it is important to sprint even harder to try to get open. This is why they are forced to sprint around a cone and back up-field.

3. This is an important drill for goalies to work on their outlet passes. Many times during a game, balls are dropped and inaccurate goalie passes cause turnovers. This is a great drill for goalies to pass to a moving target.

Page 61: THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK - Amazon Web Services · The Little Black Book of Lacrosse Drills ... The letters indicated between the drill name and page number describe what fundamental

Defense- GB Break

53

Set-Up1. Place balls behind the net. 2. A goalie should stand to the side of

the crease on both sides. 3. Two lines of defensemen (D) line up

in front of the crease as diagramed above.

Instructions1. The goalies both start with a ball. 2. On the whistle, the goalies roll a

ground ball out behind the net. 3. The two defensemen at the

beginning of each line run and pick up the ground ball and then run to the outside of the box.

4. The defensemen turn (be sure their stick is to the outside, facing the end line) and throw an over pass (1) to the opposite defensemen. Both defensemen do this simultaneously.

5. When the ball is caught by both defensemen they pass (2) the ball back to their respective goalie.

6. After the pass the defensemen sprint up the sideline and receive a breakout pass (3) from the goaltender.

7. Defensemen return to the opposite line and place the ball back behind the net for the goaltenders.

Coaching Tips 1. Be sure the players use both hands

to pick up the ground ball and to throw their passes.

2. Goalies should concentrate on throwing an accurate breakout pass. Be sure they are yelling, “Break!” Remind them to lead the defenseman with the ball.

3. If the ball is thrown short, the defenseman has to recognize this and come back for it.

4. If your team has a number of defensemen have them do push-ups, sit-ups or lunges while they are waiting their turn.

Variations 1. Have goalies on the opposite side

throw the break out pass. 2. Have the goalies rotate each time, or

every two, so they are throwing to both sides of the field.

3. Have the defenseman roll the ball to each other for extra GB practice.

4. Have the assistant coaches put a bit of pressure on the defensemen when they throw the over pass to simulate a ride.

CommentsThis is a great drill that teaches the most important fundamentals of starting a good clear.

Page 62: THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK - Amazon Web Services · The Little Black Book of Lacrosse Drills ... The letters indicated between the drill name and page number describe what fundamental

Face Off Killer GB’s

54

Set-Up1. Coach divides the team into 4 even

lines. The four lines should be directly behind the 4 spots that the arrows on the diagram indicate. (Wing positions) The extra players should stand off the field.

2. Four players, 1 from each line should assume the starting position on the wings as shown above.

3. The coach should be standing at center “X” with all of the balls.

4. The goalies should be in each net but off to the side so that they are both on opposite sides of the field as shown above.

Instructions1. Once you line the players up

correctly explain to them that for this drill the field will be cut in half. You will notice in the diagram that the arrows are either black or white. The two black arrows will be playing against each other. The two white arrows will be playing against each other.

2. The coach will place a ball between each of the two sides. This is indicated above by a black circle.

3. When the coach blows his whistle the two black arrows will run in, as if they were on the face off wing in

a game, and fight for the ground ball. This will also happen with the two players in the white arrow line.

4. The player who wins the groundball will throw the ball to the goalie on his respective side of the field. You can see this is indicated above on the black arrow side with a pass line that says “Winner” above it.

5. Once the player throws the ball to the goalie each player must touch both feet inside of the restraining box. The player who won the groundball (1) is going to touch both feet in the box (minimum) and then attempt to get open for a clearing pass from the goalie. The player who lost the groundball (2) now has to recover, touch his feet in the box, catch up to the other player and prevent him from receiving a clearing pass. Basically he is riding hard.

6. The players must stay on the side of the field that the goalie is on to prevent collisions. This is why you indicated to the players that the field is cut in half for this drill.

7. The object is for the players to work to get the ball, make the smart pass back to the goalie and then work to get open for a pass. They can use the whole side of the field to get open. Coaches should make

Page 63: THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK - Amazon Web Services · The Little Black Book of Lacrosse Drills ... The letters indicated between the drill name and page number describe what fundamental

55

suggestions for players who just don’t get open.

8. Once the players clear the ball past center or the player gets stopped, the whistle is blown and the coach begins the drill over with four new players.

Coaching Tips 1. This drill creates unbelievable

competition. Stress the importance of working to get the GB. If they don’t they will spend a lot of time chasing their peers all over the field.

Page 64: THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK - Amazon Web Services · The Little Black Book of Lacrosse Drills ... The letters indicated between the drill name and page number describe what fundamental

GB Swarm Drill

56

Set-Up1. The coach divides the players

into two teams. Assign each team a different color.

2. The coach stands above the restraining line with a ball.

3. A goalie is in the net.

Instructions1. This is an intense heart and

hustle ground ball drill! 2. All of the players start by facing

towards the outside of the field. You don’t want them looking inside to see where you throw the ground ball.

3. When you are sure they are respecting the rules, throw a ground ball out somewhere into the middle of the field. Throw it wherever you want.

4. As soon as the coach throws the ball he will blow the whistle. When the whistle sounds all the players will sprint and fight for the ground ball. Make sure you stress to your players that you

don’t want to see them be the last one into the battle.

5. When a player picks up the ground ball and is in an area to throw the ball, he will pass it back to the coach.

6. The coach will then immediately throw the ball back out onto the field somewhere. All of the players will react and sprint towards the second ground ball.

7. The players will again compete for the GB. The team that wins the second ground ball will be the team on offense. The team which loses the ground ball is now on defense.

8. The teams will play 5v5 until the coach blows his whistle or a goal is scored.

Coaching Tips 1. Once again this drill is all about

hard work and hustle. Stress to the players that you want to see hustle, determination, teamwork, heart, and most important fair play in this drill.

2. Any player who becomes negatively aggressive during this drill must be addressed. As a coach you want to stress hard work and hustle, however, not to the point that one of your players will get injured.

3. Have fun!

The Trolley

58

Set-Up

1. Have all of the player’s line up behind the centerline facing in one direction. This line is diagramed with the black arrow.

2. Divide all of the balls up evenly and place them 3-4 yards outside of the restraining box.

Instructions

1. On the coaches whistle the first player in line will sprint and pick up a ground ball from the batch of balls. See “GB” in the diagram.

2. The player will then carry the ball until he is about 15 yards out from the goal. At this point he will take a shot.

3. After taking the shot, the player will sprint around the net and up the side of the field towards the next batch of balls.

4. The player will then pick up another “GB” from the second batch of balls, carry it in and take a second shot on the empty net.

5. Once the player has taken the shot, he will again sprint around the net and back towards the end of the line where he can now catch a quick break.

6. The players should be staggered and leave once the player in front of him begins to sprint around the net. This prevents a player from hitting another player with a shot while running behind the goal.

7. Keep the trolley going until the coach is satisfied with the work effort.

Coaching Tips

1. This is a great conditioning drill. It gives the players a chance to work on the important fundamentals of ground balls and shooting while on the run.

2. In order to keep the drill moving it is important to have a coach or assistant standing by the goals to retrieve balls and throw them back to the GB areas. Also it is easier to motivate from here.

3. Penalize players for missing the first shot. If they miss, they do not get to shoot a second time. Instead, they must sprint all the way to the back of the line.

Page 67: THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK - Amazon Web Services · The Little Black Book of Lacrosse Drills ... The letters indicated between the drill name and page number describe what fundamental

Fast Break

59

Set-Up

1. Have the defense and attack set up at both ends of the field in fast break formation.

2. The balls will be placed in or beside both goals.

3. Two lines of players will line up on either side of the center line as diagramed.

4. Two lines of players will also line up to the right of the goalies as diagramed.

Instructions

1. Goalies will yell, “Break”. 2. The first player in both lines to the

right of the goalie will break up the alley and receive a pass (1) from the goaltender.

3. The player will then look for the player on the opposite side of the field cutting towards the center of the field.

4. He will make a pass (2) to the corresponding midfielder.

5. The midfielder will then turn up field and run a fast break.

6. When the fast break is over, the midfielder who ran the fast break

will return to the line to the right of the goalie.

7. The goalie then starts a new break.

Coaching Tips

1. Be sure that the point attack man is making an “Early” or “Draw” call for the breaking player.

2. Be sure that the fast break player stays wide and creates a box or 4 on 3.

3. Be sure the player never passes the ball down his own side to the single attack man.

4. If the defense is stationary be sure the midfielder reads this and takes the ball to the net for a shot.

5. The players in the middle of the field should not cut until the breakout pass is secured.

6. Be sure that the defense is communicating their slide package in a loud voice.

Variations

1. Have the (2) pass rolled to the opposite midfielder.

2. Rotate the sides and run a lefty break.

3. Have your defenseman run the fast breaks as well. You never know when they will in a game!

Page 68: THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK - Amazon Web Services · The Little Black Book of Lacrosse Drills ... The letters indicated between the drill name and page number describe what fundamental

FB Transition

60

Set-Up1. Two even lines of midfielders at

center. Each pointing towards a goal. See diagram.

2. Two sets of attack and defense set up in their fast break formation. Position the defense the way you want them to defend a fast break. All of the defensemen should be communicating “Point, Back Right, and Back Left.”

3. Offense should be lined up in fast break formation. Communicating “Point, Back Right, Back Left.”

4. Balls should be placed at the midfield with the two lines.

Instructions1. On the whistle a midfielder from

each of the two center lines runs down the field on a fast break.

2. The offensive player tries to draw the top defenseman so that he can make a pass to the point attack man. If the defenseman does not slide to him he should run in and shoot.

3. When the point attack man receives the pass he has three looks: a) To the bottom right attack man. b) To the bottom left attack man. c) Back to the midfielder.

4. Space, quick ball movement and recognition are the keys to offensive success.

3. For more advanced teams think about which players will be allowed to take the shot. Often a coach would rather set his defense up to ensure that the opposing team’s weakest player will end up taking the shot.

5. Defense slides to the ball. They should “stay tight” and make short, effective slides. Communication is essential to success.

Coaching Tips 1. Be sure the attack men are spread.

This causes the defense to extend out. By making them extend out they have to make longer slides which will increase the offensive success.

2. On the defensive side be sure they stay tight. If the offense wants to extend out let them. Stay tight and prevent the easy 1 v 1 on the goalie. Make them force a 10-15 yard shot or a bad pass. Always make sure the defense has their sticks towards the inside. This will prevent any skip passes. Communication is essential for success. Make sure the defense has a 1, 2, and a 3 call (or whatever call your team uses).

Page 69: THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK - Amazon Web Services · The Little Black Book of Lacrosse Drills ... The letters indicated between the drill name and page number describe what fundamental

Quick Breaks

61

Set-Up1. Move the goals up to the restraining

line at both ends of the field. 2. Set the offense and defense up in

fast break formation. 3. Goalies should be in each net. 4. One ball will start in the E1 line of

extra players. These lines are labeled “E and E1” in the diagram. It does not matter which line begins with the ball as long as your offense is set up for a fast break starting with the player coming down from that line.

5. All the extra balls should be placed evenly in both nets.

Instructions1. On the coach’s whistle, the player in

the designated line “E1” will sprint towards the offense and run a fast break.

2. When the fast break is complete. The offense and defense will sprint down to the other end and set up in fast break formation again.

3. While the offense and defense is sprinting, , the goalie will pick up a ball from his net and throw a pass (1) to the first player in line “E”.

4. Once this player has caught the ball, he will sprint and run a fast break at the other end.

5. Once this break has been completed, the offense and defense will sprint to the other end again and set up for another fast break situation. The goalie will once again pick up a ball out of his net and throw an outlet pass to the original line “E”.

6. Once the offense and defense have completed 3 fast breaks the next set of offense and defense will substitute in and the drill continues.

Coaching Tips 1. This drill is designed to make the

offense and defense hustle in a fast break drill. Often in fast break drills the offense and defense get to stand around while the midfielders do all the work. This drill changes that.

2. Instruct your goalies to time their starting passes. This will ensure that a player is not going down 1 v 1 versus the goalie. Wait for the offense and defense to cross center before the pass is made.

3. Be sure to designate 2 or 3 offensive and defensive sets. This will allow less time for confusion between substitutions. For example, start the drill with your number 1 attack and number 1 defense. When it comes time to substitute call for your number 2 attack and number 2 defense, etc.

4. Allow long poles to run fast breaks while waiting. They could get the chance in a game so be sure that they are prepared.

Page 70: THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK - Amazon Web Services · The Little Black Book of Lacrosse Drills ... The letters indicated between the drill name and page number describe what fundamental

The Slow Break

62

Set-Up1. Start with three defensemen and

three attackmen positioned as they would be in a game while awaiting a slow break.

2. If running this drill at both ends (which is recommended if you have enough players), then set up another group of defensemen and attackmen at the opposite end.

3. Divide the remaining players into three lines. One of these three lines (D) will be a defensive line. This is where your LSMs and short stick defenders should line up. The two offensive lines will be located at the center wing line.

Instructions1. The coach will throw a ball to either

one of the offensive lines at center. 2. The receiving player will then

immediately get the ball into the offensive end by passing it to an attackman.

3. The defensive player at center will get into the crease area quickly to help on defense.

4. The second offensive player will run into the play. Most of the time this player will make a hard cut through the crease. By cutting hard through the middle, it opens up the backside of the field for a 1v1 dodge with the attackman and defenseman. It also allows the original passer to cut hard

into that open space for a possible scoring opportunity. See diagram.

5. The attackmen must move the ball through X. This is a fundamental basic and the only rule for the drill. Once the ball has gone through X, then the offense can try to score.

6. Since this is a 5v4 do not allow the kids to play for an extended period of time. This is unrealistic because in a game they would not have the man advantage for that long. If you want to even up the play, send a second defensive player into the play.

Coaching Tips 1. Slow breaks happen all the time in

lacrosse. However they are rarely executed on a consistent basis. Play around with your team and develop some common strategies that will ensure that your team is on the same page.

2. Run this drill at both ends of the field. By using two units of attack and defense it allows for less standing around. Kids get better the more they play. Repetition is essential for all fundamentals.

Page 71: THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK - Amazon Web Services · The Little Black Book of Lacrosse Drills ... The letters indicated between the drill name and page number describe what fundamental

4v3 with Chaser

63

Set-Up

1. A goalie is in each net. Balls are split evenly and placed in the nets.

2. The defense and attack are set up at both ends in fast break formation.

3. Split the rest of the players up into four even lines. These lines will be placed in the midfield area. Lines “O” will be positioned at the bottom of the face off wing line. See the diagram.

4. The “C” line will be positioned over the restraining line. See diagram.

Instructions

1. Pick a goalie to start the drill. On the coach’s whistle, a player from the chasing line (C) will cut across the top of the restraining box and receive a pass (1) from the goalie. See diagram.

2. Once he catches the ball he will immediately look to pass (2) to the player in the “O” line that began his cut when the chasing player caught the ball.

3. The “O” player will then sprint on a 4 v 3 fast break. The player from line “C” will chase him sprinting to get back on defense and make it a 4v4.

4. Once a shot has been taken, or a turnover has occurred, the goalie will yell, “Break” and a player from the chaser line in that end will cut and begin the drill in the opposite direction.

5. Continue the drill up and down the field until you want to stop.

Coaching Tips

1. To let the offensive player have a chance, be sure that the chasers run along the restraining line until they catch the ball. The offensive players should not leave until the ball lands in his stick.

2. Discuss fast break strategies to your offense and defense. What slide package is the defense going to run? Where is the offensive point man? Where do the low attack men play? What does the midfielder do after drawing the first slide?

3. Have fun!

3v2 Ironman

64

Set-Up1. Goalies start in both nets with the

balls.2. Divide the players into six even

lines. The players will line up just behind GLE in three separate lines at each end of the field as diagramed by lines A, B, and C.

3. Divide each end into separate colors. Players on each side of the field are on the same team.

4. To start, place two players set up in an “I” as shown by the numbers 1 and 2 at the opposite end of where the ball will start.

Instructions1. Start at one end of the field by

having the goalie yell, “Break”. 2. On the goalies command a player

from line A, B, and C will break up- field as shown by the arrows.

3. The goalie will pass the ball to one of the three players.

4. The three players will run down and run a quick 3 v 2 break against the already set up defensive players (1 and 2).

5. Whichever player takes the shot on goal, shown by player "A" above, he will sprint around the goal while players B and C sprint back in to the crease to become the new defensive players.

6. As soon as a shot has been taken the players in lines A, B, and C from that end break out. The goalie will grab a ball out of the net quickly and pass it up field to one of the breaking players.

7. This will create a 3 v 2 going back the other way with a chaser sprinting back to play defense.

8. Once a shot has been taken those players get back on defense and the play goes the other way without stopping.

Coaching Tips 1. It is necessary to be a director the

first time you run this drill. Players will stop and forget their defensive responsibilities. Stress the mental game here. Players need to develop game awareness and react to plays that happen in a game.

Page 73: THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK - Amazon Web Services · The Little Black Book of Lacrosse Drills ... The letters indicated between the drill name and page number describe what fundamental

3v2 Ironman

65

2. When the trailing player catches up to the play defense, let the players continue for about 15 to 20 seconds. This will help defensive communication and man-to-man defense.

3. Offensively when it becomes a 3 v 3 stress off ball movement. The two players without the ball should be working together to get each other open using pick and rolls or backdoor cuts.

4. Offensively try to get the players to move the ball up the field quickly. The goalie does not always have to pass to the lead man. Make the shorter passes and teach the players to head man the ball to create offensive transition opportunities.

5. When a ball is thrown away on the offensive side, instruct your goalies to yell, “Break” and start the drill back the other way. Have the player who either missed the pass or the player who threw the bad pass be the one who runs around the goal. The coach will need to verbally direct that player.

Variations 1. Add another line at each end to make this a 4 v 3 drill. The players will get more runs and

be faced with a more difficult scoring opportunity. Conditioning becomes a factor here and forces the players to be mentally tough as the drill continues.

2. Have fun!

Page 74: THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK - Amazon Web Services · The Little Black Book of Lacrosse Drills ... The letters indicated between the drill name and page number describe what fundamental

Numbers Drill

66

Set-Up1. Five lines across center with

alternating colors. 2. The 3 white lines are the offensive

players. The 2 black lines are the defensive players.

3. The attack and defense are set up in the offensive zone.

4. The coach stands off to the side with a bucket of balls.

5. A goalie is in the net with some balls.

Instructions1. When the coach throws the ball to

the nearest white line, as in diagram 1, only that player is in action. The player runs down on a fast-break (4v3). After the shot is taken he returns up field and receives a breakout pass from the goaltender and then returns to a line.

2. When the coach throws the ball to the middle white line, as in diagram 2, players from the first three lines are in action. This simulates a slow break (5v4). The black line gets into the crease and the two offensive players play out the 5 v 4. When the play is over everyone breaks out and the goalie passes to one of the players.

3. When the coach throws the ball to the third white line, as in diagram 3, a 6 v 5 situation is created. The first player in each line is in action. The two black lines get into the crease and pick up a man. The three white lines play offense in a 6 v 5 situation.

Coaching Tips 1. Be sure everyone is rotating through

all of the lines. Players have a tendency to stay in their favorite line.

2. LSMs should be in the defensive lines.

3. Midfielders should play both offense and defense.

4. The ball should move very quickly on the offensive side to take advantage of the extra man.

5. Be sure the offense is not just standing around. Have them cut, pick, etc.

Variations 1. Reverse the lines. Make the far

white line the fast break line. This will help your attack adjust when there is a break coming down the right side.

2. Make it a game. White gets a point for scoring, black gets two points for a successful clear.

Page 75: THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK - Amazon Web Services · The Little Black Book of Lacrosse Drills ... The letters indicated between the drill name and page number describe what fundamental

Fast Break with Chaser

67

Set-Up

1. Position the attack and defense at both ends of the field.

2. A goalie is in each net. 3. Divide the rest of the players into

four lines and have them line up as diagramed.

4. All of the balls should be placed on one side of the field, divided between the two diagramed lines.

Instructions

1. The first player in each of the two black lines will sprint to the center “X” and then turn up field as if on a break.

2. The players will receive a pass from the players in the white lines. The pass should come from the white player that started directly across from the black player.

3. As soon as the white players make the pass they will then chase the black player who is now on the same side of the field.

4. The black players will run the fast break and the white players will try to get back into the crease to stop the man advantage from further developing.

5. Once the players have finished the drill they will move off to the side and switch lines. The black line player now changes to the white line.

6. The drill continues until the coach ends it.

Coaching Tips

1. This drill helps players practice catching the ball over the shoulder while on the run, passing to a breaking player and fast break offense.

2. As a coach, be sure that your team understands the strategy that you would like them to execute both offensively and defensively.

3. When players do get into the crease and match up defensively it is up to the coach to determine when it is a good time to stop the play. You might want the kids to play a bit of 4v4 or you might just want the kids to practice running a fast break quickly with pressure coming from behind the breaking player.

Page 76: THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK - Amazon Web Services · The Little Black Book of Lacrosse Drills ... The letters indicated between the drill name and page number describe what fundamental

3 Pass Clear

68

Set-Up1. To start this drill six players will

begin by doing a shuttle drill. 2. Two goalies will be in the net. One

goalie will have a ball, the other goalie will not.

3. All extra players will be assembled into groups of 6 and will stand behind the net.

4. Balls will be placed in the goal creases at each end of the field.

Instructions1. Six players will be running a shuttle

drill. Have them run it for 20 seconds. This will allow each player to get a few touches.

2. On the coach’s whistle, the last player to catch the ball will throw the ball to the goalie who is not carrying a ball. The goalie should be calling for it!

3. As soon as the whistle goes, all six players will break to one of the six spots on the field as marked in the diagram. Two players (1 and 2) will break to the corners of the restraining box along GLE. Two players will break to the corners of the field at mid-line (3 and 4). Two players will sprint and touch the mid-line (5 and 6) and then break back to the ball.

4. The goalies will then pass the ball to the players in the corners (1 and 2). Once players 1 and 2 catch the ball they will begin to run up field. They will now be waiting for players 5 and 6 to come back to the ball. Once 5 and 6 break back to the ball they will receive a pass from 1 and 2.

5. When players 5 and 6 receive passes from their respective partners, 1 and 2, they will break up-field. As soon as they catch the ball players 3 and 4 should begin to break over the midline. Players 5 and 6 will then pass the ball to players 3 and 4.

6. Players 3 and 4 will then run hard to the net and take a shot. Coaches should tell the players where they want them shooting from.

7. All remaining players should then sprint down to the opposite end.

Coaching Tips 1. This is a pure mental drill. Do not

allow the players to run to the same spot each time. Even though this drill seems to be broken up into two parts it really takes recognition of where they are after the shuttle drill whistle is blown. Some players will be on the left side of the field, some on the right side. The players will

Page 77: THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK - Amazon Web Services · The Little Black Book of Lacrosse Drills ... The letters indicated between the drill name and page number describe what fundamental

3 Pass Clear

69

have to recognize where they are and then get to a spot quickly. This helps them focus and to break to proper spots once a turnover has been caused. The numbers above are only spot numbers. Do not number the players 1-6. The players will recognize where on the field they are when the whistle blows and then run to the nearest open spot.

Page 78: THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK - Amazon Web Services · The Little Black Book of Lacrosse Drills ... The letters indicated between the drill name and page number describe what fundamental

Middie Marathon

70

Set-Up1. Set up the attack and defense at

both ends of the field. See diagram.

2. Goalies should be in the goal at both ends with the balls in each net.

3. Divide the rest of the players into two groups, each in a different color, and have them line up in the substitution box area as diagramed by the X’s and O’s.

Instructions1. This drill is a great conditioning

drill.2. Designate a goalie to start with

the ball. In the diagram it is the goalie to the right. He will yell, “Break”. When he does, the “X” team’s first player will cut towards the goalie, receive a pass and then sprint to the other end for a 4 v 3 break.

3. Once the break is over the goalie will immediately grab a ball out of the net and yell, “Break”. This

time an “O” player will cut down towards the goalie. At the same time, the original “X” player is sprinting back to play defense. The “O” player will receive the ball and then sprint down for a 4v4.

4. When the play is over, the goalie yells, “Break” again. An “X” player will cut down to the goalie. The other “X” player will cut to the other side of the field and the “O” player will sprint back on defense. The two “X’s” will now sprint on a 5v4 break.

5. This continues going both ways until a 6v6 is reached. Then restart the drill with the “Os” to give them the man advantage on offense every time.

Coaching Tips 1. This is a great conditioning drill.

Players will be worn out once this drill is over. Try to run this drill at the end of practice.

Page 79: THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK - Amazon Web Services · The Little Black Book of Lacrosse Drills ... The letters indicated between the drill name and page number describe what fundamental

Middie Marathon

71

2. You will find that when you call this drill out players will try to position themselves among the last remaining players to run the 5v5, 6v5, or 6v6. Be aware of this and make sure that every player gets a chance to be one of the first players.

Recap 1. Goalie always starts the play with a “Break” call. 2. One team, in this diagram it is the X team, will always have an advantage of 1

player on offense. It is important to do the drill a couple of times to make it even by letting each team start with a 4v3 break.

3. The first player in the X and O lines always cuts down to the goalie when he yells break. This helps the rest of the players either sprint back on defense or break up field and spread out on offense.

4. As a coach realize that the kids are running hard. Try not to let the offense play for long periods of time. The point of the drill is to condition the middies and to work on the transition game.

5. Have fun!!!

Page 80: THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK - Amazon Web Services · The Little Black Book of Lacrosse Drills ... The letters indicated between the drill name and page number describe what fundamental

5 v 4 Full Field Breaks

72

Set-Up1. Goalie in each net with balls. 2. Split your defense up into eight

even lines and place them on the field as diagramed by the “D” arrows above. You should have eight lines.

3. Split your offense into ten separate lines. Line these players up on the field as diagramed by the numbers 1-5. Lines labeled “1” should be predominately midfielders.

Instructions1. To start this drill, have one of the

goalies pass a ball (A) to a cutting player from line 1.

2. When player 1 catches the ball he will turn up field and begin a break towards the opposite end.

3. The offensive players in that end of the field (lines 2-5) cannot start until player 1 crosses over the center line.

4. The defensive players in that end of the field (D lines) also cannot start until player 1 crosses the center line.

5. Once player 1 crosses center a 5 v 4 break begins. The objective for the defense is to quickly get into the crease and set up a box, as diagramed by the four dots. From here the defense can rotate and play the 5v4.

6. The object for the offense is to run the 5 v 4 break and score.

7. Once the play is over (a goal scored, missed shot, etc.) the goalie will yell “Break”. The corresponding player in line “1” will cut across the field and receive a pass (B) from the goalie. Player 1 can then turn up field and run the 5v4 break at the other end.

8. Continue until the time is up!

Coaching Tips 1. Discuss some options for your

offense. You don’t want them to just stand around on the outside. Have them penetrate the box, cut, pass the ball quickly and find the 2-on-1 on the field.

Page 81: THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK - Amazon Web Services · The Little Black Book of Lacrosse Drills ... The letters indicated between the drill name and page number describe what fundamental

5 v 4 Full Field Breaks

73

2. Defensively, be sure that your defensemen quickly set up in a box on the crease.3. Communication is a must here. Have the defense run your box style strategy. The

defense should be rotating accordingly. 4. Have this drill move quickly. If the play is dragging, blow the whistle and start

the ball back the other way. If you want the players to continue, you can always send in another player from a designated line to make it a 5 v 5.

Variations 1. Be innovative. If you do not have the players to run this drill full-field condense it

into a half-field drill. 2. You can always take a line away to make it a 4v3 or add a line to make it a 6 v 5.

Use your discretion to practice different scenarios and game situations. 3. Try to let the players play for at least 3-4 sets. If you need to stop the drill to

teach something or give advice, do this after a few runs. This gives the players a breather.

Page 82: THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK - Amazon Web Services · The Little Black Book of Lacrosse Drills ... The letters indicated between the drill name and page number describe what fundamental

Defensive GB to Fast Break

74

Set-Up1. The attack and defense should be

positioned in fast break formation at both ends of the field as diagramed.

2. All other players should be assembled into two even lines. Line them up midway between the centerline and the restraining line. The lines should be on opposite sides of the field as diagramed by the “Ms”.

3. A goalie should be in both nets. The balls should be divided evenly in both nets.

Instructions1. On the coach’s whistle, the goalies

will roll a ball towards the corner to the right of each net. The closest defenseman (this should switch each time) will run towards the ball and pick up the groundball.

2. After the defenseman picks up the groundball he will turn up-field and look for the midfielder cutting from the opposite side of the field. See diagram.

3. The defenseman will then pass the ball to the cutting midfielder. Once the defenseman passes the ball he will get back into fast-break formation. See the area of the

diagram labeled “Start” to follow all of these beginning steps.

4. When the midfielder catches the ball he will run down the field on a fast break.

5. Once the fast break is over, the goalie should grab another ball out of the net and roll it towards the corner.

6. A different defenseman should be picking up the groundball each time and subsequently start the fast break.

Coaching Tips 1. The number one thing that slows

this drill down is a dropped pass. Be sure to tell your goaltenders not to roll the next GB until the fast break at the other end is complete. This also means that the defenseman who is waiting to pick up the groundball should not stand in the corner waiting for it. The defenseman should stand beside the goal crease and wait for the goalie to start.

2. Be sure that the defenseman is throwing with the appropriate hand. For the drill diagramed above the defenseman should be throwing with their right hand.

3. Be sure that the midfielders time their cut. They should be catching the ball in the middle of the field in full stride.

Page 83: THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK - Amazon Web Services · The Little Black Book of Lacrosse Drills ... The letters indicated between the drill name and page number describe what fundamental

Chaser Drill

75

Set-Up1. Goalies are in both nets. 2. Two lines of players along the wing

lines at center, facing the middle of the field.

3. To start, 2 players will have a ball (The number 1 players).

4. To start, two players will be chasers (The number 2 players). They do not have a ball.

5. To start, two players are placed just outside of the restraining box (The number 3 players).

6. Balls are placed at the edge of the restraining box as shown above.

Instructions1. When the coach blows the whistle

the number 1 players sprint towards the goal with a ball and take a shot about 15 yards away. At the same time the number 2 players chase the number 1s (Number 2s from the opposite line is the chaser). This is not a chase to check drill, but more of a sprint into the crease.

2. Once the shot is taken by the number 1s they will then sprint to the side and pick up a ground ball, turn up field and throw a pass to the number 3 players.

3. The number 2 players, who are now in the hole, begin to sprint up field and look to receive a pass from the number 3 players.

4. Once the number 2 players cross the centerline a chaser from the opposite line chases him and the drill continues.

5. The original chasers receive a pass, take a shot, pick up a GB and make a pass to the new number 3 player. This number 3 player is the player who just shot.

Coaching Tips 1. The kids tend to get confused as to

who is the chaser. Remember that they are chasing the man from the opposite line, and then receiving a pass from the number 3 player in their own line.

2. Have the number 3 players really concentrate on throwing a pass to the streaking number 2 player. With a chaser involved they really have to lead the man. Usually, they have to throw an arched pass so it will not get knocked down.

3. Walk through this drill. The extra five minutes it takes you to explain it properly the first time will save you valuable minutes for future practices.

4. Be sure they are not shooting too close. Make them shoot down the alleys or sweep.

Page 84: THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK - Amazon Web Services · The Little Black Book of Lacrosse Drills ... The letters indicated between the drill name and page number describe what fundamental

Full Team Transition

76

Set-Up1. This drill uses all players. As a

coach you can make the players play all positions, or you can designate attack for both ends, defense for both ends and midfielders for transition.

2. Start with goalies in both ends. 3. Place a line of 2 or 3 defensemen

behind the goals on the end line at each end. (See the black and gray “Ds”)

4. Place a line of 2 or 3 defensemen halfway up the restraining box along the sideline. (See the black and gray “Ds”)

5. Place three players set up like attack at both ends. (Six in total, see the black and gray “Os” in the offensive ends)

6. Place two groups of midfielders just above the restraining line (See the black and gray “Os”).

7. The diagram above shows the spots to set up all of the players. Also note that the different colors explain which direction the players should be going.

Instructions1. The drill works in both directions

unless you do not have enough players to support the full field. In this case just run the drill in one direction.

2. Follow the Passing Sequencediagram to follow the instructions and paths players should be running.

3. Ball starts with the goalies. 4. The defenseman behind the goal

steps up and banana curls out towards the alley. The goalie passes him the ball (1).

5. The defenseman then turns up field and looks to pass (2) to the defenseman on the side breaking up-field.

6. During this pass the first midfielder begins to cut into the zone and curl up field. The defenseman makes a pass to him (3).

7. As the first midfielder catches the ball and begins to break up field the second midfielder in line makes a cut up field across center. He will receive a pass (4) from the curling midfielder.

Page 85: THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK - Amazon Web Services · The Little Black Book of Lacrosse Drills ... The letters indicated between the drill name and page number describe what fundamental

Full Team Transition

77

8. Once the midfielder makes the catch he will run to the top of the restraining box and make a pass (5)down to the wing attack man who should be cutting out.

9. Both midfielders should not stop running. They should now both be trailing the play timing their cuts.

10. The attack man turns to the outside and makes a pass to the attack man behind the goal (6) who is cutting towards him.

11. The attack man behind the goal should catch the ball and immediately look to pass (7) to the first midfielder who is trailing the play. (This is the midfielder that made the #5 pass.)

12. When this midfielder catches the ball he makes a quick pass across the crease (8) to the far attack man.

13. This attack man looks to pass to the original midfielder who cut into the zone and received the #3 pass. The attack man makes the pass to him trailing the play (9) and he takes a shot on net. Once the player shoots at both ends the goalies give a “Ready” call to each other and start the drill again.

14. When rotating it is best to have the attack players rotate amongst each. The midfielders should fill in the line on the opposite side of the field.

The defenseman should rotate between end and sidelines.

Coaching Tips 1. This drill is suited for upper level

players. Since the drill requires the completion of nine passes, timing, and field awareness, it is recommended that this drill be only done by teams that can play at a relatively high level.

2. It is important that assistant coaches are placed strategically on the field with some extra balls. This will help to keep the drill moving in case of a bad pass. If there are no coaches available, place some balls on the sidelines at center for midfielders to use in case of a dropped ball.

3. Have fun! This drill will most definitely help your team move the ball up-field quicker and more efficiently in hopes of leading to numerous transition goals.

80

Set-Up1. Break up the team evenly into two

colors.2. Have the players line up as shown in

the diagram above. 3. The ball is placed in the middle. 4. A goaltender is in the net. 5. For diagram A, the players line up

along GLE and across the top of the restraining line.

6. For diagram B the players line up on the edges of the alley as shown.

InstructionsFor both games, the rules are as follows:

1. Diagram A: On the coach’s whistle, six players (3 from each team) compete for the ground ball.

2. The winning team has to make 3 passes before they can try to score.

3. The boundaries are the alley lines, the restraining line, and the imaginary line along GLE.

4. Once a team makes 3 passes they can score. If they score, they are awarded a point.

5. The team that is playing defense must try and force the ball out of bounds or knock it on the ground.

6. If the defensive team intercepts a pass before it touches the ground, then they become the offensive team and have to make three passes before they can try to score.

7. When a goal is scored, a point is awarded. If the ball hits the ground or is forced out of bounds, the whistle blows and the next 6 players get ready. The ball is placed in the middle and play restarts.

8. Diagram B: The same rules apply for the game. The only difference is that the boundaries are different. Use the sideline, the end line, the restraining line, and the alley line for the boundaries.

9. Similarly once three passes are achieved, the team can try to score.

Coaching Tips 1. Be sure the players are ready before

the whistle blows. 2. Have a prize for the winning team. 3. A game to 5 usually lasts 10-15

minutes.

4. Be sure the long poles are divided evenly.

5. Let the players have fun. Penalties can be enforced by having the violating team send only 2 players on the next restart or having the violating player touch the midline before he can rejoin the play.

Triangle 3v4

82

Set-Up1. Divide all of the offensive players

into 4 even lines and have those lines start at the four corners of the restraining box.

2. Each offensive line is given a number as shown above in the diagram. O1 means offensive line 1, O2 means offensive line 2, etc.

3. All of the defense will stand outside of the box to one side.

4. Three defensemen will start the drill by facing each other in a triangle formation on the crease. The Ds above diagrams this.

5. A goalie should be in the net. 6. Balls should be evenly distributed

between the offensive lines.

Instructions

1. The defense will start facing each other on the crease in front of the goalie.

2. The first player in each of the offensive lines will have a ball in their stick.

3. The coach will yell out a number from 1-4. If he yells out 3 for example, then only the player in line 3 will continue to hold onto the ball,

the rest of the players (1, 2, and 4) will all drop their ball.

4. The drill will be a 3v4 with four offensive players attacking the goal.

Coaching Tips

1. Remind your players that commun-ication and rotation in the triangle is a defensive must. Sticks should be facing the middle to take away the passing lanes.

2. Be sure that your defense stays tight and does not get too far extended far. The rule of thumb for your defense should be to contesteverything within 15 yards of the cage.

3. Offensively, you want to move the ball quickly, to play a box and to isolate the 2-on-1 quickly. Remind the players that the goal will come from the person who is 3-4 passes away. Ball movement in situations when you have numbers is essential when there is an odd man rush. Execution and efficiency has to be stressed to the offense. If you have an extra player you should be able to score every single time.

4. Vary the drill by moving the offensive lines into a diamond around the restraining box.

Page 91: THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK - Amazon Web Services · The Little Black Book of Lacrosse Drills ... The letters indicated between the drill name and page number describe what fundamental

Face Off 2 v 1

83

Set-Up1. Three even lines as noted by the

numbers 1, 2, and 3 in the diagram. 2. The coach will place a ball

somewhere around the face-off “X” at the start of each separate drill.

3. Place a goalie in the net.

Instructions

1. On the coach’s whistle the players in each line will compete for the ball. Lines 2 and 3 are on the same team and are trying to prevent the player in line 1 from getting the ball.

2. The object is to teach the players in line 2 how to box out or get in front of the player in line 1 to ensure that their teammate in line 3 can easily pick the ball up.

3. Once the ball is picked up, the players from lines 2 and 3 will run down the field on a 2 v 1 against player 1. (Or a 5 v 4 if the defense and attack are in play)

4. If the player in line 1 gets the ball, then it shall be a 1 v 2 situation towards the goal. Commend the player’s effort afterwards!

Coaching Tips

1. Teach the players how to box out an opposing player by using their body. Players boxing out should be trying to get a step on the opposing player and then use their body to control which way the opposing player can and cannot go.

2. Teach the players who pick the ball up to immediately look up-field. If there is an opportunity to push the ball up the field, then he must take it.

3. Defensively the player should get into the crease, get his stick up, and try to prevent the two on one pass.

4. If needed, select four or five players to continuously run in line 1. Have them wear a different colored jersey. Then rotate another group of players in after each player gets three attempts.

Variations

1. Place the attack and defense at one end of the field. The drill will then become a 5v4 break.

Page 92: THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK - Amazon Web Services · The Little Black Book of Lacrosse Drills ... The letters indicated between the drill name and page number describe what fundamental

Riding 1v1

84

Set-Up1. Split up the defensemen and the

attack men into two groups. 2. The attack will line up facing the

restraining alley where the “A’s” are positioned in the diagram.

3. One defensive group will line up in the corner of the field between the end line and GLE. The other will line up in the corner of the restraining box at the other end of the field facing the alley as diagramed.

4. One goalie will start with all of the balls behind the net. The other goalie will be in the goal at the far end.

Instructions1. The drill begins when the goalie

makes a pass to the defenseman in the corner of the field. Once the pass is caught by the defender the attack man can then begin to play.

2. The idea is for the defender to quickly carry the ball up the alley (the players must stay in the alley) while the attack man is riding him trying to get the ball away.

3. Once the defenseman crosses the restraining line, the attack man stops riding and changes to the other attack line. The defenseman carries on and makes a pass to the second attack man who cuts towards him as

soon as he crosses the restraining line. Once the defenseman passes the ball he changes to the other defensive line.

4. When the attack man catches the ball he tries to beat the defenseman to GLE. The attack man cannot leave the 10-yard alley area. This gives the defenseman time to try and take the ball away. Once the attack man makes it to GLE he then can go 1 v 1 to the goal against that same defenseman and try to score.

5. Players always rotate between their respective attack and defensive lines.

Coaching Tips 1. Teach angles for this drill. The

attack man should be funneling the defenseman while constantly putting pressure on their hands.

2. Defensively, stay in a position to prevent the attack man from turning back up field while in the alley. This will prevent him from making passes to cutters or players who have beaten their men down into the offensive end.

3. Stress good riding. Good riding attack men will score 5-6 more goals a year from turnovers that they cause.

1v1 Cuts

85

Set-Up1. A goalie is in the net. 2. Place a line of players behind the

goal at X (A). These players have balls.

3. Place a line of offensive players between center and the restraining box (M). These players are the cutters.

4. Place a line of defenders (D) beside line (M).

Instructions1. A cutting player (M) and a

defending player (D) step out to start. The defending player assumes a defensive position between the cutter and the goal.

2. When the coach blows the whistle the cutting player (M) runs at the defender and makes a quick move to try to get a step on the defender. The defender tries to prevent this from happening.

3. Player (A) also starts by making a V-cut with the ball at X and dummy dodges the backside. He looks to pass the ball to the cutting player if he gets open.

4. If the cutting player does get a few steps on the defender, he should expect a pass from player (A). Once the cutting player catches the pass he will try to score.

5. After the play is over, the players involved switch lines. Player (A) moves to line (D), player (D) moves to line (M) and player (M) moves to line (A). Some players can remain in certain lines. For example, if you have a longstick player he will remain in line (D). Attackmen can stay in the offensive lines. Or just make every player rotate to each position. This is up to the discretion of the coach.

Coaching Tips 1. This drill is designed to help

offensive players practice catching the ball under pressure. Often drills are done when the player just runs, catches and shoots. These drills help to practice catching and shooting on the run. However, this drill helps to mimic a game where a player must use his ability to create open space for himself in order to get into a good scoring position.

2. When players cut it is important that they learn how to set up a defender. There are many ways to do this. The most basic fundamental is to try to get the defender to move in the opposite direction the cutter wants to go. The cutting player can achieve this by using a strong V-cut, using a roll dodge or using a split dodge without the ball. By doing anyone of these basic tactics, it forces the defenseman to turn his hips and make him think that the cutter is going in the opposite direction.

Page 94: THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK - Amazon Web Services · The Little Black Book of Lacrosse Drills ... The letters indicated between the drill name and page number describe what fundamental

Downfield Picks

86

Set-up1. Players should be assembled on

GLE in groups of four. Each group should contain two offensive players and two defensive players. (Defensemen can be offensive players; actually it is encouraged)

2. A ball is needed for each group.

Instructions1. The two defensemen will step out 5

yards. See diagram. 2. One of the remaining offensive

players (1) will start with a ball. 3. The drill starts by player 1 throwing

a pass to player 2. Once player 1

passes the ball he will make an up-field V-cut and attempt to set a pick for player 2. See diagram.

4. Player 2 is the ball carrier so his responsibility is to keep the defenseman covering him occupied. A player can achieve this by simply carrying the ball up-field and force the defenseman to turn his hips toward him. See diagram.

5. Once player 1 approaches player 2 to set the pick, player 2 will explode with a cut off player 1’s shoulder. If it is a good pick then it will force the two defensemen to switch.

6. After player 1 sets the pick he will roll back into open space. Player 2 will continue with his cut up-field. Player 2 will then turn back and pass to player 1. After player 2 passes to player 1, it will now be his turn to set the pick. Player 1 will now set up his defenseman for the pick.

7. This sequence of events continues all the way down the field until the group reaches GLE.

Coaching Tips A. The diagram CTA helps to explain

two important fundamentals of setting a defenseman up for a pick. Notice how player 2 takes the ball to the outside forcing the defenseman covering him to turn his back to the center of the field. By doing this it allows player 1 to set a pick on the defenseman without him knowing it. You will also notice how player 1 tries to beat his man up-field. By doing this it makes his defenseman turn and chase him. This allows player 1 to turn back toward player 2 and gain a distinct advantage on his defender while setting the pick.

B. In CTB you will notice in the diagram how player 2 makes a

Page 95: THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK - Amazon Web Services · The Little Black Book of Lacrosse Drills ... The letters indicated between the drill name and page number describe what fundamental

Downfield Picks

87

strong cut off player 1’s shoulder. If a player does not run tight to the pick, the defenseman can easily step out and stop the pick from happening. Often what happens when players run wide off a pick is the pick-man tries to compensate and he too will step out. Of course, this leads to an interference call. Teach your players to explode off the pick-man’s shoulder and continue the strong dodge. The player will have to continue because the defenseman who was covering player 1 will now be forced to play player 2.

C. In CTC you will notice that both player 1 and player 2 make smart plays. Player 1 immediately rolls out of the pick and cuts high away from his defender to support player 2. Player 2 does not try to force his sweep cut. He realizes that a defender is there and turns back to look for support. In this case player 1 is his support. Player 2 passes to player 1 so that he can dodge the weak side. Player 2 then makes his cut en-route to set a pick for player 1.

Defensive Tips 1. There should be communication

between defensemen during this drill. A defense can defend picks various ways. The two most common methods are man-to-man switching and book-ends defense.

2. During man-to-man the two defensemen will communicate through the picks. The defenseman who is covering the offensive player setting the pick should be communicating with his partner, “pick left, pick right, etc.” This allows the defenseman covering the ball to take a few steps back. When he takes his steps back he can either

call switch if his offensive player cuts or he can make a “home” call to let his partner know that he is staying with the ball carrier. This is an effective defense if it is run properly and the defensemen communicate with each other.

3. Book-ends defense simply means that the two defensemen try to keep the two offensive players between them. By staying to the outside of the offensive players both defensemen can see what the two players are doing on offense. This allows the defense to easily communicate who is covering who. Both systems can be effective if run properly. However both can be beaten as well. Mix it up and keep the opposing team on their toes!

Page 96: THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK - Amazon Web Services · The Little Black Book of Lacrosse Drills ... The letters indicated between the drill name and page number describe what fundamental

Gauntlet 1 v 1’s

88

Set-Up

1. Two lines of players will line up on or behind the end line in opposite corners.

2. The alleys will be divided into five sections using cones.

3. A defensive player will be placed on the imaginary line between two of the cones.

4. Balls will be placed with the players in each line at the end of the field.

Instructions1. On the whistle, the players in the

front of the two lines will carry a ball and begin to run toward the defenseman.

2. At the same time, the first defenseman is moving forward on the whistle.

3. The defenseman will try to stop the attacker from getting across his imaginary line, while the offensive player will to get by the defender and cross his imaginary line. The defender can push the attacker past the cones (out of bounds); however, he must let the attacker restart by giving the attacker at least three yards of space.

4. The defender must stop immediately once the offensive player crosses the imaginary line that the defender is defending.

5. As soon as the offensive player crosses the defender’s imaginary line the next defender can then step forward to prevent the offensive player from crossing his imaginary line.

6. The drill is complete when the offensive player has successfully crossed all four of the defenseman’s imaginary lines.

7. The second player in line can begin once the previous man has beaten the third defenseman.

8. If a defenseman checks the ball out of a player’s stick, the offensive player should be given time to pick the ball up and restart with three yards of space.

9. If the ball is dropped as the player is crossing the imaginary line, the defenseman should allow the offensive player time to pick the ball up and continue.

10. All players should substitute positions and play both offense and defense, including the long sticks.

Page 97: THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK - Amazon Web Services · The Little Black Book of Lacrosse Drills ... The letters indicated between the drill name and page number describe what fundamental

Scramble Scrimmage

Set Up

89

1. Divide your players into two even teams.

2. Have each team in a different color. 3. Each team should set up as if

playing a game. Three attack, three defensemen, three midfielders and one goalie. See diagram.

4. A coach in the substitution box with all the balls.

Instructions1. The scrimmage should follow all

rules of lacrosse unless otherwise adjusted by the coaches.

2. The ball will start with the coach (or assistant coach) standing in the substitution box.

3. The coach will throw the ball onto the field. He can throw the ball wherever he wants. The players will adjust and the game is on.

4. If a ball goes out of bounds by way of a pass, check or shot, the coach will throw another ball anywhere onto the field. The players should not chase the previous ball and continue playing the new ball.

5. If a goal is scored, the ball stays in the net and the coach throws out another ball to re-start action.

6. If at anytime the coach is dissatisfied with play or one team is dominating the opposing team, the coach

can blow the whistle and throw another ball out. The players will get rid of the previous ball in play and focus on the new ball.

7. Substitutions are made at the coach’s discretion. The coach can allow the teams to play for three minutes and then substitute in extra players. He could also substitute in players on the fly.

Coaching Tips 1. This drill is a great way to run a

scrimmage. The players love it- their emotions bleed out of them.

2. For coaches this drill is great for setting up certain game like situations. By simply blowing the whistle and throwing another ball onto the field, the coach can manipulate the scrimmage in many different ways. Fast-break situations, 1v1 match-ups, 3v3 match-ups, GB situations, clearing situations and riding situations are only a fraction of the situations that coaches can manipulate.

3. Have a blast!

Page 98: THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK - Amazon Web Services · The Little Black Book of Lacrosse Drills ... The letters indicated between the drill name and page number describe what fundamental

Dart Drill

90

Set-Up1. Defense: To begin, have two

defensemen with their toes on the chalk of the crease. The extra defenseman should be behind the goal, near the end line, waiting for a turn. Offense: Split the short sticks up into three even lines and have them positioned evenly across the centerline.

2. A goalie is in the net with all of the balls.

Instructions1. The drill starts when the goalie yells

“Break”. The two defensemen banana curl out to the sides of the field as diagramed.

2. The goalie will pass the ball to one of the defensemen. In the diagram above, the pass (1), is to the left defenseman.

3. This defenseman will then get control of the ball, take a few steps, and then throw the long over-pass to the offensive player on the far side of the field as diagramed by the (2).

4. The offensive player then passes the ball to the offensive player in the

center who cut high to receive the pass (3).

5. Reminder, after the defenseman makes the pass, he should be running back into the hole to meet up with his defensive partner as diagramed by the two dots. The defenseman should set up in an “I” for the 3v2 break.

6. The offensive player in the middle now has the ball. He will start the 3v2 break towards the goal. He will draw the top slide and then move the ball to one of the other offensive players. The offense should work for a quick shot.

7. When the shot has been taken the goalie will start the drill back up when his 2 new defensemen have their toes on the chalk.

Coaching Tips 1. It is wise to have some backup balls

placed near the outside offensive lines at center.

2. Be sure that the middle offensive player cuts high. In a game he would not stand at the top of the restraining box. He would anticipate the pass and want to be in position to catch and run hard immediately. This also helps to develop a triangle stagger that is important for executing a proper 3 v 2.

3. On defense, the top man forces a pass and then recovers. The back defenseman will play the first pass by trying to anticipate which player the ball will be passed to.

4. Make sure that the players are switching lines. Challenge the players to use both hands and to play all positions in order to develop their skills and confidence.

Page 99: THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK - Amazon Web Services · The Little Black Book of Lacrosse Drills ... The letters indicated between the drill name and page number describe what fundamental

Break Out

91

Set-Up1. The team divides into 4 even lines.

The lines are broken up into two different colors, and are assembled at the restraining line as diagramed by the gray and white arrows.

2. Goalies should be in both nets. 3. The coaches should have all of the

balls and stand between the two lines at each end.

4. A cone is set up on the other half of the field 10 yards above GLE. See diagram.

Instructions1. The coach rolls a ball out 10 yards

in front of the players in the two lines.

2. The first player from each line will then battle for the ground ball.

3. The winner of the “GB” will then pass it to the goalie. The loser will begin a sprint around the cone as if he were breaking up-field.

4. The winner will then begin to “ride” the losing player after he passes the ball to the goalie.

5. The goalie will hold onto the ball until the breaking player gets to the cone. Once the player is around the cone the goalie can pass the ball.

6. The riding player will then try to intercept the ball or prevent the breaking player from catching it.

7. The riding player should continue to put pressure on the ball carrier if he does catch it and try to force a turnover or push the player out of bounds.

8. Once the players cross over center, the play is finished.

Coaching Tips 1. Use judgment with your players

when positioning the cone. Sometimes if the cone is too far up-field then the player cutting around the cone catches the ball and goes untested the whole way. The goal is to make the goalie throw a pass over the riding player’s head and hit the breaking player in stride. By moving the cone back and forth you will find the right position for your team’s ability.

2. Second, be sure that the players are focused and on-task. The ground ball should be a battle all the way to the end.

3. If the winning player catches up to the losing player then the losing player must find a way to get open.

Page 100: THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK - Amazon Web Services · The Little Black Book of Lacrosse Drills ... The letters indicated between the drill name and page number describe what fundamental

“Game Time”

92

Set-Up1 This drill will consist of 6 lines with

multiple players, and 2 lines with a single player.

2 The first step is to place the goalies on opposite ends of the field, standing on GLE, about 8 yards from the restraining box.

3 Place one player five yards inside the restraining line, across from the goalie in their end. (Line 4)

4 The rest of the team will be divided up into 6 even lines. The lines should be positioned as follows: Line 1 should be on GLE, opposite the goalie and in the alley. Line 2 should be above the restraining line and facing line 1. Line 3 should be in the alley beside the goalie along GLE.

5 All balls should be divided up and placed in line 1.

Instructions1 On the whistle, the drill will start at

both ends with line 1. The first player in line 1 will roll a ball towards line 2 just inside the restraining box. He will then sprint to the end of line 2.

2 The first player in line 2 will pick up the GB and then run towards the goalie and throw a 10-15 yard pass to him. The player will then join line

3 When the ball is in the air towards the goalie the first player in line 3 will cut in a straight line up the alley. He will look for the goalie to give him an outlet pass that should be caught in the center wing area. Once caught the player from line 3 will sprint towards line 4 at the opposite end. He will pass the ball to the player in line 4 who will time his cut so that player 3 is making about a 15 yard pass to him on the run.

4. Once player 3 passes the ball he will become player 4 and look to be the shooter. Player 4 takes the shot on the empty net and then joins line 1.

5. This drill is continuous. To prevent players from standing around there should be 4 balls in play. As soon as player 2 passes to the goalie the next player in line 1 should be starting to roll the ball out to player 2. If the players jump the gun and get too impatient a traffic jam will occur.

Coaching Tips 1 Be sure the players are sprinting to

each line. Players tend to jog if they don’t have a shot to take!

2 Ground balls must be scooped up with two hands on the stick! No exceptions!

3 Have players shoot to specific areas of the goal. This helps them to

Page 101: THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK - Amazon Web Services · The Little Black Book of Lacrosse Drills ... The letters indicated between the drill name and page number describe what fundamental

93

practice what coaches preach, “Shoot with a purpose!”

4 Switch the sides of the field. This will make sure shots and passes come with both the left and right hands.

5 To keep the players moving, if a bad pass is thrown have a ball or two ready for backup. Have fun! This is a great warm up drill.

Page 102: THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK - Amazon Web Services · The Little Black Book of Lacrosse Drills ... The letters indicated between the drill name and page number describe what fundamental

Insane Face Offs

94

Set-Up1. Divide your players into two even

teams. Be sure to evenly distribute long poles and short poles.

2. Have the teams divide into two different colors. In the diagram above this is represented by Team A and Team B.

3. In the diagram, Team A is clearing the ball to left side of the field where it says A=Offense. Thus Team B plays defense on this side of the field and tries to prevent Team A from clearing the ball.

4. On the right side of the field Team B is on offense trying to clear and Team A is on defense preventing the clear.

5. During the drill each team is to designate 3 players to take the face-off. This will include a face-off man and two wing players.

6. Each team will also set up two extra spares on the restraining line at each end. (A total of seven players in all) This set up can be seen in the diagram.

7. All extra players should be in the substitution area on the side.

Instructions1. On the coach’s whistle, the two

face-off players will battle for the ball as if they are in a game. The wing players, like in a game, will be running, trying to get the ground ball that comes free.

2. The boundaries for this drill are restraining line to restraining line.

3. Whichever team wins the face-off, whether it be team A or team B, they will try to clear the ball successfully across the other teams restraining line.

4. If team A wins the ball they will try to clear it across team B’s restraining line. The four players on that side of the field only are allowed to join the play. Thus team A gets 2 extra men to help clear the ball, and Team B gets two extra men to stop the clear.

5. The same is true if Team B wins the face-off. The only difference will be that the players at the other end of the field get to play.

6. When a team wins the face-off they can go in any direction to clear the ball. However, they only have 15 seconds to do so. This means all players must be aware and work to try to clear or defend the ball.

Page 103: THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK - Amazon Web Services · The Little Black Book of Lacrosse Drills ... The letters indicated between the drill name and page number describe what fundamental

Insane Face Offs

95

7. This is a game, so the team that successfully clears gets a point. The team that also prevents a clear gets a point. Thus a point should be scored on every face-off. Play up to 10.

8. Make sure that all players, even attack men, get a chance to play in the middle during the face-off. This will also help you figure out which kids you can count on to get GB’S during a face off.

Coaching Tips 1. Remind the players involved in the drill that only the two players on the face-off winning

team will be involved. For example, if team A wins the face off then team A’s two offensive players and team B’s two defensive players can join the drill. Team A’s defense and team B’s offense will not be involved.

2. You won’t believe the intensity that develops during this drill!

96

Set-Up1. Divide the team up into two even

groups with each group in different colors. The diagram above shows two teams, one black and one gray.

2. Start with a goalie in each net. The balls should be split evenly between them.

3. The long stick defensemen should be lined up at each of the four corners of the field (D1s and D2s).

4. Set up two attack units. One attack man should be at “X” (A3), and the other two should be along GLE close to the restraining box line.

5. Split the remainder of the players along the centerline. All of the blacks will be lined up on one side of center, and all of the grays will be on the other side. See diagram above for starting positions.

Instructions1. The diagram above shows the pass

sequence for one color. When this drill is being run, two balls are in play at all times.

2. The goalie starts with the ball. On the whistle he passes it to D1.

3. D1 then makes the over pass to D2.

4. As the ball is in the air O3 begins a low cut, as if he’s coming back to help the ball carrier.

When D2 catches the ball he passes to O3 cutting towards him.

5. When O3 catches the ball he turns up field. When D2 passed the ball, O2 should have cleared through recognizing that O3 is now in that lane. O3 will continue up field until O2 has crossed center. O3 will then pass to O2.

6. When O2 catches the ball A1 will break towards him for support. O2 passes to A1. A1 will then turn back.

7. A1 will make his pass to A3 who is running towards him for support. Once A3 catches the ball he will turn and sprint to the other side of the field looking to pass to A2 who is breaking towards him.

8. When A3 is running, O1 will begin to time his cut from center, imitating the late man. A2 will look to pass to O1 for a quick shot.

9. The goalies then begin a new ball.

Pass sequence is as follows: G to D1, D1 to D2, D2 to O3, O3 to O2, O2 to A1, A1 to A3, A3 to A2, A2 to O1.

Page 105: THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK - Amazon Web Services · The Little Black Book of Lacrosse Drills ... The letters indicated between the drill name and page number describe what fundamental

97

Change Lines as follows: O1 becomes O3, O3 becomes O2, O2 becomes A1, A1 becomes A3, A3 becomes A2, and A2 becomes O1. Defense should substitute each time or have the defense sprint around the outside of the field corner to corner after each pass.

Coaching Tips

1. This drill is used to simulate the basic principles used when clearing the ball. Some points of emphasis that this drill incorporates are:

Defensemen reverse the ball using the over pass. Middies come back to help the defensemen, as if a team were pressuring.Middies clear through to give dodging players’ space to run. This prevents teams who ride well from doubling the ball. Middies learn to be patient on the opposite side of the field. How many times does your team go off side? How many of those times is the far middy responsible for the offside?Attack men give the middies support.Attack men understand how to reverse the field of play in a slow break situation. Finally, sprint hard on a cut as if you were beating a defenseman into the crease.

2. Be sure to explain these basic principles to your players especially those at the youth level and up to the high school level. Many players just do what they are told and do not really understand why they are doing something. The basic principles that this drill teaches from every position can be used in all aspects of the game from offense to defense.3. Have fun and enjoy this drill. It is great way to keep your team thinking, running, passing, and catching.

98

Set-Up1. Split the defense into four even lines

and then place one line in each of the four corners of the field as diagramed by the “Ds” above.

2. Place a goalie in both nets with all of the balls divided between them.

3. Split the short sticks (SS) up into 4 even lines. They should line up on the field as diagramed above. The short sticks are marked as SS1, SS2, SS3, and SS4. See the arrow for the direction in which each line should face.

Instructions1. On the coach’s whistle both goalies

make a pass to the defenseman in the corner of the field. See diagram.

2. That defenseman then throws an over pass to the defenseman on the other side of the field. See diagram.

3. As the defenseman catches the ball lines SS1 and SS3 break down the alley towards the defenseman and receive a pass from him. See diagram.

4. As SS1 catches the ball, SS2 breaks down into the box and looks to receive a pass from SS1. This also happens on the other end when SS4 breaks into the box to receive a pass from SS3.

5. Once SS2 and SS4 have the balls in their stick, they immediately sprint up the field as if they were on a breakaway.

6. Once SS1 and SS3 have thrown their respective outlet passes, they will run to the top middle of the restraining box. Once there, they will await the players on breakaways. This now turns into a 1 v 1. SS1 will stop SS4 and SS3 will stop SS2.

7. The players should make a strong move and take a shot. Once both players have made a shot, the goalies should determine if both ends are clear and start the drill again.

8. Line movement is as follows: SS1 to SS2, SS2 to SS3, SS3 to SS4, and SS4 to SS1. Defensemen should sprint to the opposite side after each pass.

9. Have fun! This is a great condition-ing drill for middies, and a great passing drill for defensemen.

Coaching Tips1. Shorten up the distances if the

defensemen cannot catch the ball. 2. Stress good timing on the cuts and

how they relate to a game.

1 V 1 Break the Line

100

Set-Up1. This drill can be done from behind,

from up top or from anywhere on the field where you want your ball carrier to beat his man.

2. When starting from behind set up two or three cones, one on the edge of the crease across from the post and another one at a 45° angle 10-12 yards out.

3. When starting from the top, set up two or three cones. Position three cones as diagramed above. Two should be at the outer edges of the high crease, and one five yards in from the top center of the restraining line.

Instructions

From Below: 1. Line up the players in the corner of

the field. If going from both sides, line up the offensive and defensive players evenly.

2. On the whistle the offensive players go 1v1 against the defenseman. The offensive goal is to beat the defender between the cones and get a shot on goal. The goal defensively is to defend the imaginary line

between the two cones. The defenseman should prevent the offensive player from beating him top side of the field position. If he does get beaten, it is better to do so on the low side because the slide will be more effective.

From Up-Top: 3. The offensive players line up at the

center “x”. The defensive player settles in the middle of the three cones.

4. The offensive goal is to break the imaginary lines of the triangle and get a quick shot off. The defensive goal is to keep the player outside of the triangle, thus imitating midfield defense by not giving up top side (or the middle).

Coaching Tips 1. Be sure that the defensive player

keeps the man from beating him top side. This is assuming that your defensive scheme tries to create the inside roll for the slide.

2. Be sure the defensemen are using the proper footwork, are crouched down for stability, and do not throw any unnecessary checks. Play the body!

4v5 Box Defense

101

Set-Up

1. Divide the offensive players into five even lines. Once the players are divided have them assemble around the restraining box as diagramed. The offensive lines are labeled “O” for offense followed by a number 1-5.

2. The defense can be divided into units or groups of four. The defense will place four players on the crease to start and the extras will stand off to the side as diagramed above by the “ED” marking.

3. A goalie should be in the net. 4. Balls should be evenly divided

among the offensive lines.

Instructions

1. Four defensive players will set up on the crease. They should be arms length apart and facing each other.

2. The first player in each offensive line will be ready with a ball in his stick.

3. The coach will begin the drill by calling out a number 1-5. The player whose number is called will carry his ball into play. The other

players will all drop their ball and join the play without a ball.

4. The defense must recognize where the ball is and play defense in their box accordingly.

5. The offense should try to move the ball quickly to isolate the extra man in order to score.

6. The drill continues until the coach blows the whistle.

Coaching Tips

1. The defense should be rotating appropriately while staying tight. Coaches should express to the defense exactly what formation and strategy they should utilize.

2. The defense should have sticks up and towards the middle to take away the passing lanes.

3. Offensively the players should be moving, cutting and passing the ball quickly. The offense should try to break down the defensive box in order to get a good shot off.

4. Play with quick whistles. Odd man advantages only happen for seconds at a time. Knowing this, it does not help to run this drill for a long period of time. The drill will be more valuable if players understand that cutting and passing quickly generates a lot of scoring opportunities.

5. Have fun!

Long Pole Clears

102

Set-Up1. Three defensemen line up with their

feet on the goal crease. One defenseman is on the left side and another is on the right side. A point man is directly top center.

2. A goalie is in the net. 3. The coach has the balls to the front

of the crease.

Instructions1. The coach will shoot a ball at the

goalie. When the goalie makes the save he will yell, “Break!”

2. The two defensemen on the sides of the crease will break out to the edge of the restraining box and GLE. The point man will stay home at top center.

3. The goalie will pass the ball to one of the defensemen. It does not matter which one.

4. The defenseman who does not receive the pass will yell, “Redirect” to his partner.

5. The defenseman who has the ball will then throw the redirect pass to the other defenseman.

6. When the ball is in the air the point man will recognize the side to which

the ball is going and he will break out.

7. The defenseman will then pass to the point man breaking up-field.

8. The clear is then over and the next three defensemen can then start. Defensemen should take turns at all three positions.

Coaching Tips 1. Be sure the defensemen are

throwing with their proper hand. Sticks should be to the outside when catching and passing.

2. Be sure that there is communication. Keep it going as the drill continues. Communication is everything in lacrosse!

3. If you want to add a bit of competition to the drill have the back up goalie or another player turn their stick over and ride the point man breaking out. This will help the point man develop a “getaway” move. It could happen in a game.

4. Challenge the defensemen with sprints or extra work for every dropped ball and/or bad pass.

5. Be sure the goalie is yelling, “Break”. If you want to challenge the goalie have him communicate to the defensemen where the coach is standing (top center, top left, top right, etc) then shoot the ball and have him yell, “Break!”

Cross Cage Goalie

103

Set-Up1. A goalie is in the net. 2. Select two short-stick offensive

players. 3. One of them will stand with 15 balls

on GLE 8 yards from the crease. The other player will position himself in scoring position on the other side of the crease. See diagram.

Instructions1. When the goalie is ready, he will

signal the passing player to start. The passer can then throw a pass across the front of the goal to his partner (scorer). The scorer will shoot quickly as if he were in a game with only seconds on the clock.

2. Once the shot has been taken the goalie will jump up and get ready for the next ball. The goalie must touch the post and signal, “Ready” each time. By doing this the goalie will develop good ready positioning and learn to be vocal in the net.

3. The scorer should work in a five yard radius up and down the edge of the crease (see dotted line in the diagram). Every time the goalie assumes the ready position the scorer should move to a different spot. This will help the goalie

practice tracking the ball instead of assuming the scorer will always have his toes on the edge of the goal crease.

4. The passer should not always stand in the same position. In the diagram there are four black circles that represent a different area to pass from. These areas are the most common places on the field where a pass like this would come.

Coaching Tips 1. Your goalies will not like this drill

because it exposes their weakest spots. If a goalie can make 30% of the saves during this drill then he is doing very well or your shooters are questionable. Remind your goalies to stay positive and really try to concentrate on the flight of the ball and the direction where it is heading. Great goalies understand their angles. When a goalie is comfortable in the net he knows where he is and if he knows where he is, he can usually judge by ball flight to where the ball is being passed.

2. Tell your goalies that when it comes playoff time you will be confident that no team will beat you with a cross crease pass in a tie game with only seconds left. If that does not make him work hard, find a new goalie.

3. When the passer is behind the net the shooter should be 5yds above the crease and working side to side as the goalie will be watching the passer move around behind the net.

Page 112: THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK - Amazon Web Services · The Little Black Book of Lacrosse Drills ... The letters indicated between the drill name and page number describe what fundamental

Clear the Crease

104

Set-Up1. Place a goalie in the net. 2. Two defensive players and two

offensive players line up in front of the crease facing the opposite end of the field. The arrows in the diagram represent the direction the players should be facing when they start.

3. A coach stands to the side with many balls.

Instructions1. The coach will take a shot on the

goal that will be easy for the goalie to save.

2. The goalie will save the shot and purposely let a rebound fall out of his stick and land in the front of the crease on the ground.

3. As the coach takes his shot the goalie will yell, “Shot”. This will be the starting indicator for the defensive and offensive players.

4. Once the ball has landed on the ground the offensive players and the defensive players will compete for the ground ball that is loose.

5. The defensive players can get the ball by picking it up, by kicking it to the goalie, by sweeping it to the goalie and by checking it out of an offensive player’s stick.

6. The goalie is not allowed to reach his stick out of the crease to grab the

ball. This is a competition between the offense and the defense.

7. If the offense picks the ball up then the two players will play 2v2 versus the defensive players until a whistle is blown, a goal is scored or a change of possession occurs.

Coaching Tips1. The coach can add a clearing aspect

to the drill. If the defense plays the ball back to the goalie then they should immediately break and try to clear the ball past center. The offense will ride the defense to prevent this from occurring.

2. Defensive teamwork is a must during this drill. Remember that the defense has the distinct advantage because they have a goalie that they can utilize. Defensemen can kick the ball, sweep the ball and pass the ball back to their goalie. As a coach you want to make sure players realize this and give them strategies to use so that they can accomplish this goal.

3. Offensively the only two options players have are to pick the ball up or sweep it hockey-style into the net. Therefore, offensive players have to work hard to create opportunities and find ways to move the ball to an area of the field that will help them pick the ball up.

4. The crease is always a tough place to work. The crease is the most protected part of the lacrosse field. Defensemen and offensive players have to work hard here to make plays. This drill helps players to develop the toughness and quick decision-making skills necessary to be an effective crease player on both sides of the ball.

Defensive Doubles

105

Set-Up1. A goalie is in the net. 2. Have four offensive players and

four defensive players set up inside the restraining box.

3. One offensive player starts with the ball.

4. Have another defensive line set up at the center line.

5. All of the extra players should be at the center line waiting their turn.

Instructions1. This drill is designed to help the

defense learn to double the ball. As a coach, you want to teach the defense to force the ball carrier to turn into the defensive pressure.

2. The drill works by starting the ball with an offensive player.

3. On the whistle, the offense will play 4v4. On the coach’s signal, such as a second whistle, a player from the defensive line at center will sprint into the crease and relieve the defensive player of his duties.

4. The crease defensive player then becomes the double man. He will find the ball on the field and sprint to work with his defensive partner to

take the ball away from the offensive player or force a turnover.

5. When the defensive player from center gets into the crease, there should be lots of communication among the defense. All defensive players should be sliding out to shut off adjacent passes so the offensive player has no where to pass. This will give the double man time to set up an effective double team with his defensive partner covering the ball.

6. The offensive players are not allowed to leave the restraining box.

Coaching Tips 1. Defensively, the goal is to turn the

offensive player into trouble. In the diagram above, the top player passes the ball down to the offensive attack man. When this happens, the defense should immediately jump out and shut off the other offensive players so the ball carrier has no one to pass to. The defensive player covering the ball carrier should force the offensive player to turn back by taking away the players top side. By doing this, the double man can now sprint out and take away the low side. Hopefully, the two defensive players can effectively take the ball away or force a turnover. There are many situations that can occur and coaches will have to teach strategy along the way.

Diggity D

106

Set-Up1. This is a 6v6 drill that helps defense

strategize how to play against an offense that has gained an advantage for 4-5 seconds. This could be due to a number of reasons (player trips or falls, player gets beat in a corner, a late change, etc.).

2. Set up your offense in the set you would like them to be in. For example a 1-3-2 is diagramed above.

3. Set up your defense to play against the offensive set. A sample defense is diagramed above with man-to-man coverage while the defenseman for the “X man” is to the side of the crease on the ball side.

4. Have a goalie in net. 5. Place a cone 10 yards above the

restraining line in the center of the field.

Instructions1. Number each defenseman 1-6.

These numbers do not change. When substitutes come onto the field they assume the previous player’s number.

2. On the whistle, the offense should move the ball around as quickly as they would in a game. Make sure

that the offense does not throw the ball inside during the beginning stages.

3. The defense should be moving with the offense in the defensive system that the team runs.

4. After approximately 30 seconds (one and a half times around), the coach will call out a number. The defenseman who assumes that number will sprint and touch the cone and then return to play.

5. The object for the offense is to recognize where the open player is and get the ball to him as soon as possible. The offense will try to score. The defense will recover per the coach’s direction and assume a defense that will help them to slow down the offense until their defensive player can regroup and pick up a man.

6. Once the player regroups and finds the open man, the coach will blow his whistle for the second time. This does not stop play. Instruct the offense to move the ball around the outside until another number is called.

Coaching Tips 1. Before you do this drill, make sure

that your team has a quick refresher on how to play defense. They should be reminded of the calls that you want them to make (1 slide, 2 slide, help, hot, ball, etc). The defense should also be instructed on how you want them to play each type of offensive set and what kind of formation you want them to set up when this situation arises.

2. Your team should have a call for this type of defensive set up. Most of the time it will be your goalie who will recognize this.

3 Man Slides and Recover

107

X is Defense, O is Offense Set-Up

1. Divide the entire team into 4 lines of offense and defense and place them in the corners of the box. See diagram.

2. A goalie should be in the goal. 3. Balls should be placed in all four

lines.Instructions

1. Pick a corner to start from. In the diagram above the ball starts in the top left of the box.

2. The offensive player will start with the ball. The defensive player from that line will defend a 1v1 from that position.

3. Place an extra offensive player on the crease with a defenseman covering him.

4. Make the players in the opposite corner aware that they will be the final players involved. The defenseman from this line will become the second slide, and the offensive player will become the third man.

5. On the whistle the player with the ball will begin a 1v1 against the defenseman. The crease defenseman should be locked on to his man and be aware that he is the first slide if

the defenseman covering the ball gets beat. The third defenseman should be cheating towards the crease. All three defensemen should be communicating the slides.

6. Play out the drill making sure that if the offense beats the defense there is a 1, 2, and recovery slide.

7. The rest of the drill will play out. It is up to the coach to communicate what the outcome should be.

8. Rotate the starting point around clockwise ensuring that everyone gets to play from all positions on the field.

Coaching Tips 1. Since this drill will present many outcomes, these are some of the main points that must be emphasized to the players.

Defense must communicate the slides, the position they are in (1, 2, recover), and when and where they should release. Be sure defenseman know when and when not to slide. Define when you consider a man to be beat and when to select a good time to slide. Make everyone aware that if you are the defenseman who gets beat on the initial 1v1 then it is that defenseman’s responsibility to recover and defend the third offensive player. Offense should make hard and quick dodges to draw and dump. Have them understand that the best way to make a defense breakdown is by drawing a slide and moving the ball quickly. Ball movement confuses slides because players are moving around the field. The defense doesn’t know who is open and who is covered.

Defensive Footwork

108

Instructions1) Have the defense line up on the corner of the field. 2) Set up cones along the restraining box every 5-6 yards. 3) Have the players sprint ahead to the cone in front of them and break down into short choppy steps. 4) When they get to the cone they will begin to back peddle 3-4 steps. 5) After backpedaling they will open up their hips and run back to the sideline opposite the next cone. They should run as if they were running hip to hip with a ball carrier. 6) Add in some communication for the players to yell out at each cone. For example, “I’m hot”, “I have ball”, “Switch”, “I have man”, “Fire”, etc. 7) This is a good warm up drill.

Instructions1) Have the players run forward to the cone as if they were sliding. As they run towards the cone they should be yelling “I’m hot” or the slide call that your team uses. 2) Once the player reaches the cone he should make a “Stay” call, or the call your team uses once a man has slid. 3) Once at the cone they should turn and back peddle back to the line on a diagonal path. While backpedaling, the player should be making your teams “In” or “Home” call. 4) This drill helps to simulate when a player slides and does not need to make a switch.

Instructions1) This is a shuffle drill. The players will start in the corner facing the end line. 2) They will shuffle to the cone making sure that their hips are down, that they do not cross their feet, and that they are on the balls of their feet. 3) When they get to the cone they will open up their hips and shuffle back towards the sideline diagonally. 4) The drill continues until they reach the end point. Always face the same direction!

Recovery Drill

109

Set-Up1. Divide the defensemen up and have

them line up behind the goal on the end line. However, to start place one defenseman two yards above the center crease (D1) and one three yards behind the center crease (D2).

2. Place two cones ten yards off the posts and five yards up from GLE.

3. Divide the short sticks up into two lines and place them behind the cones.

4. The coach will stand top middle with all of the balls.

Instructions1. The coach will throw the ball to

either one of the offensive players starting at the cone.

2. The D1 defenseman will react to that pass and shoot out to cover that player.

3. The D2 defenseman will run to the offensive player that did not receive the pass.

4. The drill will be a 2 v 1 for a quick second until the D2 man gets back into the play.

5. The offense will try to score and the defense will try to stop them.

6. Offensively the players need to react off ball and figure out where the help slide is coming from.

Coaching Tips This drill teaches a lot of important fundamentals. Here are some things to teach, look for and vary to get the most out of the drill:

1. Be sure the cones are not too far out. You don’t want the ball getting to the player so early that the defenseman doesn’t have time to make any sort of play. This makes it a one-pass dunk every time and that is no fun.

2. When the defenseman slides, make sure he throws a quick poke check to get the offensive player unsettled. Also, be sure when sliding that he makes a conscious effort to get on the high side of the man, turn his hips and force him low. Thus, if the offensive player doesn’t have a pass, he has no choice but to try to beat the defenseman to the low side which is what you want.

3. The D2 recovery man must let his partner know when he is back in the play. Your team should have a help call for this.

4. Offensively sticks should be to the outside when catching the ball.

5. The D2 player should start close enough so that he can make it in to assist.

6. Recognize your players! If you have a star on either offense or defense matched up against a lower level player make it challenging for the star. Make him play the better player or throw a bad pass to the star and force him to make a play.

7. Make this drill a game between defense and offense. Who can score/stop the other team the most?

8. Be sure the goalie and the defensemen communicate! This is a key for any type of team defense.

Page 118: THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK - Amazon Web Services · The Little Black Book of Lacrosse Drills ... The letters indicated between the drill name and page number describe what fundamental

Touch the Cone

110

Set-Up1. The coach has a ball and stands five

yards above the restraining line. 2. A goalie is in the net. 3. Break the team up into two colors.

One color should be your defensive players (long sticks and defensive midfielders) and the other color should be your offensive players.

4. If working with younger players be sure everyone plays offense and defense.

5. To start, place five pairs of players at the spots on the field as diagramed. The “Xs” represent the defensive players and the “Os” represent the offensive players.

6. All players should have their backs towards the cone.

7. Place a cone 7-9 yards in front of the goal. (Preferably the cone should be one that players can step on)

Instructions1. The coach will blow the whistle.

When he does, the defensive team (Xs) will sprint into the middle and touch the cone.

2. While the defensive players are sprinting to the cone, the coach will throw a ground ball to an area of the

field. The coach should not throw it right at the offensive players.

3. The closest offensive player to the coach’s ground ball will pick it up and start the offensive play.

4. The other offensive players will try to confuse the defenseman covering them by running to different areas on the field.

5. By the time this happens, the defensive players should have touched the cone. Once they have touched the cone they should be trying to pick someone up and make a defensive stand.

6. The best thing about this drill is that players have to play through the confusion. During a game there are many situations that occur when a defensive player turns his head and loses his man. This drill helps defensemen think through the confusion, analyze the play, and find the open man if they are not covering anyone.

Coaching Tips 1. It is important that the coach helps

to develop this drill. Each time the drill is run it is important for the coach to recognize the players on the field. For example, it would not be wise to throw the ball to your best player. He will just pick the ball up and score before the defense even turns. This drill is for the defense, not the offense! Therefore, make it a challenge for the defense while keeping the offense interested and confident.

2. Have Fun!

4 Corner 1 v 1

112

Set-Up1. Have the offensive players make 4

even lines at the corners of the box as shown above in the diagram.

2. Have a defensive line at each of the 4 corners as well (D-middies, and long poles).

3. Have balls at each of the 4 corners. 4. A goalie is in the net.

Instructions1. The coach will designate the line

that will begin first. 2. On the coaches whistle the offensive

player will go 1 v 1 with the corresponding defenseman.

3. The player will make one hard move to try and get a shot off.

4. When the play is over, the line that is to the left (clockwise) will then go 1 v1 on the coach’s whistle.

5. Repeat until coach is satisfied. Everyone gets a turn at each of the 4 positions.

Coaching Tips 1. On all 1 v 1s behind GLE, be sure

the defenseman does not get beat topside. On all dodges from up top, be sure the defenseman does not get beat to the inside. The defensive

players should try to keep the offensive player down the wing side.

2. The offensive midfielders should try to beat the defenseman to the inside for a sweep shot.

3. The offensive players should shoot early in order to simulate game-like situations. (If they hold the ball in the middle of the field during a game, they will certainly draw a slide).

Variations 1. Have one defenseman play all 4

corners before his turn is up. Great conditioning!

2. Have a coach or another player pass the ball to the offensive player. Make him work to get open while the defense man is covering him. (Strong V-cuts).

3. Place an offensive player on the crease with a defender and have him slide if needed. (This teaches good crease play, and makes certain the dodger has his head up looking for the slide to come).

4. Have the lines set up in a diamond to practice wing dodges, X dodges, and top center dodges. Also helps defenseman practice covering a man from different spots on the field.

Comments1. A great conditioning fast-paced

defensive and offensive drill. 2. Great practice for 1 v 1 dodges and

1 v 1 defense. 3. Remember this drill is designed for

players to practice their dodges not their dancing. In a game a slide will come quickly once a defensive player has been beaten.

Page 121: THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK - Amazon Web Services · The Little Black Book of Lacrosse Drills ... The letters indicated between the drill name and page number describe what fundamental

3v2 Box Drill

113

Set Up 1. Place four cones 10 yards apart

around the field like the one diagramed above.

2. Each box should have 3 offensive players and 2 defensive players.

3. The offensive players (O) should arrange themselves in a cone area as shown above. Since there are only three players one cone area will be left empty.

4. Two defensive players will start in the middle of the box.

5. One of the offensive players will start with a ball.

6. When running the drill the offensive players should respect an imaginary 2-3 yard circle behind each cone. This is the area where they will catch and receive passes.

Instructions1. Diagram “B” displays how this drill

works.2. The offensive player will start by

throwing the ball to the empty cone. It is the responsibility of the offensive player to sprint to that open spot on the square to receive the pass.

3. As the offensive player runs to the cone the defensive player will recognize and shoot out towards him as if in a game. The defensive

player will break down and throw a poke check at the offensive player.

4. When the offensive player catches the ball he will roll and throw back to the spot where he previously was. This spot is now empty so the other offensive player has to sprint to that spot to fill it.

5. As the offensive player throws the ball the defensive player in the middle will shoot out to the ball and the defensive player who was checking the passer now has to get back into the middle.

6. The idea is that the offensive players move to open space to catch and throw. When throwing they should be rolling in the 2 yard area and make the passes with their outside hand. The defensive idea is that the defensemen will get back into the middle while their partner pressures out on the ball.

7. This drill carries on until the coach blows the whistle. This is a great slide and recovery drill for the defense. It is also a great offensive drill as players learn to fill the open space, catch, and then roll throwing away from where the ball came from.

8. Recap. Offense moves ball to open cone and the defenseman slides and pokes. Offense then turns and throws to player filling open space. Defenseman recovers while his partner slides.

Hitch It Up

114

Set-Up

1. Divide short-sticks into two even lines facing the goal between the restraining line and the midline.

2. A coach stands with all of the balls in between the two lines.

3. A goalie can be in the net if desired.

Instructions

1. This is a good dodging, passing, and shooting drill that has two parts to it. During each part you run the drill from both sides. It takes about 10-15 minutes to go through all of the parts.

2. For Part 1 the coach will roll a ball out ten yards in front of one of the lines. The diagram above shows how you would run the drill right handed.

3. The player in that line will run and pick up the GB. He will then turn and pass the ball to the player from the other line that has cut into the middle of the fielding front of the coach.

4. Once the player catches the ball (with his left hand) he will make a

strong split-dodge toward the right side for a right-handed shot.

5. Players switch lines each time. 6. When each player has had a right

handed shot, switch the GB line so that they now get a left handed shot and pass.

7. After the players have had turns in each line add Part 2 which is diagramed below.

8. In Part 2 an attack line is added. Instead of the top man shooting, he will now pass to the attack man cutting across the crease for a quick 1v1 shot against the goalie. This should be a quick-stick shot or a quick one-fake shot.

9. Run this drill from both sides again. This way the players are now getting to practice picking up a GB, hitching back to throw weak side, dodging and shooting.

Coaching Tips1. Be sure that players are picking up

ground balls with two hands, and that they are making “ball” calls.

2. Be sure that your players are communicating and giving support. Support means running to get to open spots, and calling for the ball.

Page 123: THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK - Amazon Web Services · The Little Black Book of Lacrosse Drills ... The letters indicated between the drill name and page number describe what fundamental

Hitch It Up

115

3. Be sure your players run and dodge hard.

4. Shots should be up the pipes. It is always a good idea to designate spots to shoot. Make the players think about their shot before letting the shot go with no real idea where it will end up.

5. When shooting inside, remember not to shoot where you fake. Fake high then shoot low, etc. Stress the quick-stick shot. It will increase your players ability to surprise a goalie.

Extras

1. If the drill is going very well then try adding a fourth line. By adding a fourth line there will now be 2 hitches, 2 dodges, 4 passes, a pick and a shot.

2. If you look at Part 3 you will notice that now you set a pick up top so that the attack man has someone cutting hard through the middle that he can pass to.

3. In Part 3, the ball starts once again with the coach. He will roll a GB out to the line to his left. That player will scoop the ball up, hitch back and then pass the ball (a) to the player from the right top line who “V” cuts to the middle for the pass.

4. Once caught he will split-dodge down the right side and pass the ball (b) to the attack man breaking towards the ball.

5. When the attack man catches the ball he will immediately turn back and pass (c) to the other attack man who has cut to “X”. At this time the original top left player should be cutting to the middle of the crease and then back to set a pick for the top right player.

6. The bottom left attack man will now dodge the bottom left backside and

pass (d) to the top right player coming off the pick. He will then take a shot on net.

7. This drill helps players realize that if they can draw a few defensive players away from their assignments it will be that much easier to get a good scoring opportunity.

Page 124: THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK - Amazon Web Services · The Little Black Book of Lacrosse Drills ... The letters indicated between the drill name and page number describe what fundamental

Give and Go’s

116

Set-Up

1. Three even lines are positioned at the centerline. One line will be placed wide on the wing area as diagramed by the checkered arrow. The other two lines will be placed in the center of the field as diagramed by the black and white arrows.

2. The black arrow is the defensive line. The white and checkered lines are the offensive lines. The white line will start with the ball.

3. A goalie will be in the net.

Instructions

1. A defensive player steps out 10 yards from the starting position. The letter “D” indicates this in the diagram.

2. When the whistle blows the two offensive lines (white and checkered) will begin towards the net. The defenseman will play the man with the ball in the white line.

3. As soon as the defensive player gets close, the player with the ball will pass it to the checkered player.

4. The defenseman now has to go and pressure the ball with the checkered player.

5. The player from the white line will then make a quick sprint and look to receive a return pass.

6. When he gets the pass back he will take a quick shot.

7. Once the play is over, the checkered line moves to the white line and the white line moves to the checkered line.

Coaching Tips

1. Remember this drill is for the offense to practice the give and go. The first pass must come right before the player is in danger of being checked. The second pass must be thrown as soon as the player has found open space. There should be no dodging in this drill. Many times players wait too long to make a pass and it gets easily knocked down. Stress to your players that they need to create space in order to position themselves to make and receive a pass.

Variations

1. Add two more players, one for defense and one for offense. Now it makes the drill a 3 v 2 so the offense has to recognize which player is open. When the ball is passed to the checkered line, players will have to decide which defenseman is going to play the ball and the offensive lines will have to sprint to different areas to create space for the pass back.

Diamond Survivor

117

Set-up1. This drill involves 8 players. Break

the team up into two groups so you can run this drill at both ends of the field.

2. Start by choosing 4 players and ask them to arrange themselves in a diamond around the net as shown above. (Best to have short sticks).

3. Then place two players on offense to compete against two players on defense. These players go to the crease.

4. A goalie is placed in the goals. 5. A single ball is given to one of the

four outside players.

Instructions1. The outside players will begin by

moving the ball around the outside. The offense and the defense on the crease will work setting picks, fighting through picks, trying to get open, and trying to prevent any pass inside.

2. The goal is for the players on the outside to feed a pass to an open player on the crease in hopes of

scoring a goal. The outside players cannot shoot the ball.

3. The ball can travel in any direction. Be sure to tell your players that the ball should be held for 3-4 seconds at each spot so that the players inside can react to the ball position.

4. When a player gets open in the crease, the players on the outside should pass to him. If a player is not open, a pass should not be thrown.

5. If a goal is scored, a player on the outside should pick up another ball and continue passing.

6. Each set of offensive and defensive players should spend at least 45 seconds working on the crease.

Coaching Tips 1. Teach proper crease defense and

offense before running this drill. If the players do not understand the principles of how to play against a man-to-man or bookends defense, then they will not score. If the defense does not know how to defend a pick-and-roll, then it will be hard to stop the offense. Teaching the fundamentals of the pick-and-roll to the offense is essential for offensive success.

2. Make this a competition between the defense and the offense. This ensures that the intensity will remain high.

3 Man Dodging/Shooting

118

Set-Up1. Assemble three lines of players,

(labeled 1-3 above). Lines 1 and 2 should start on the endline 15 yards apart from each other. See diagram. Line 3 is positioned just outside of the restraining box across from line 1.

2. Balls are in line number 1. 3. Goalie can be in net if wanted.

Instructions1. This drill helps to improve an attack

man’s ability to dodge, draw a slide and then turn away and make a quick pass.

2. The player in line 1 will dodge the left side of the crease 3-4 yards above GLE. This helps to mimic a position in which a slide will most definitely come.

3. The player will then turn and pass it to the player from line 2 who made a cut to the “X” spot while player 1 was dodging.

4. When player 2 gets the ball he will dodge the backside hard until he is 2-3 yards above GLE.

5. Player 3 will begin to cut as player 2 approaches GLE. He will await a pass from player 2.

6. When player 3 catches the ball he will take a shot on the run as quick as possible.

7. Players move from line 1 to line 2 to line 3 to line 1.

Variations 1. Place the balls in line 2 and have the

players in line 3 switch sides. Run the same drill, this time it will lead to a lefty pass and a right handed shot.

2. Have two lines up top. This time the dodges will be down the wings, turn back to top center, drive the backside wing, and then look for the attack man cutting in front of the crease.

Coaching Tips 1. This drill is all about timing. In

game situations you don’t want to leave to early otherwise you will end up being covered before you receive the pass.

2. Be sure the players are dodging with their heads up and at full speed.

3. When the players turn be sure they do so on a bit of an arc. If they plant and turn then they lose all momentum and it is very easy for a defender to make a check.

4. Shooting on the run is a very important skill to develop. Have the kids practice properly with nice overhand shots to the far side. Develop accuracy first!

Twenty Two Drill

119

Set-Up

1. Arrange the players into 3 even lines as indicated by the arrows numbered 1, 2, and 3 in the diagram.

2. The balls will be placed with the players in line number 3. Place a cone in the middle of the crease.

3. Place a goalie in net.

Instructions

1. This drill is designed to help players understand that when one player is dodging from up top the adjacent player should clear through.

2. Player 3 begins the drill by starting a dodge from the top. The dodge should be a split dodge to the right side of the field.

3. As player 3 dodges, the player in line 2 clears through to the crease and runs around the cone simulating an inside pick.

4. As player 2 clears through, player 1 gives player 3 support by breaking out to the side of the restraining box.

5. Once player 3 passes the ball to player 1 he should curl off to the

side of the restraining box to give player 1 space to pass the ball.

6. The middle is now clear for player 1 to make a pass to player 2 on the crease for a quick shot.

7. Players rotate from line 3 to line 1, line 1 to line 2, and line 2 to line 3.

Coaching Tips

1. This drill helps players realize three important fundamentals: a) Players must clear through whenever someone is dodging towards them. This creates space for the dodger to beat his man, take a good shot, or have the space to make a good pass. Also keep in mind that when a player does clear through he should not stop working. Find a man to run around, or anything that will help get them open for a few seconds. b) When a player dodges they should always dodge to score. This means start high to get a good run at the defender and make the right decision once they are in the middle of the dodge. That decision should be to shoot, pass, or pull out. c) Players must realize what is happening and give support. Often when playing at a high level this is all about timing. If a player leaves too early to support his man then often he is covered because there is too much time between the dodge and the pass. This allows the defender to follow. The reason the player should support wide is because often a defender will not want to leave the area if a dodge is coming. He will probably be thinking about sliding more than covering a man behind the goal.

Y from Up Top

120

Set-Up

1. Position three attack men (A1-A3) as diagramed.

2. Have one midfielder up top (M1) with a ball.

3. The defense (D1-D4) is positioned to play man to man.

Instructions

1. The M1 midfielder will dodge to score. As M1 dodges he will either be forced or will beat the defender down one of the sides. M1 will draw a slide (D3 is the 1 slide). When the M1 player recognizes this, he will pass the ball to the A1 player who will then pass the ball quickly to the A2 player. A2 can then dodge to the weak side of the field. A2 has this opportunity because the defense man (D2) would have been the 2 slide. Therefore, A2 will have time until D4 recovers and picks him up.

2. There is no set way to run this drill other than to have the offense pass the ball and dodge quickly to draw slides. The midfielder does not always have to pass the ball to the attack man. He can turn and pass it to the crease man cutting high after the dodge when the slide leaves.

This will enable a quick dodge down the weak side of the field.

3. Let the offense be creative, but keep in mind that this drill is to practice sliding and recovery for the defense. Try to limit your offense from throwing a lot of skip passes. Try to stress getting the ball to the open player in two to three passes after the slide or double has been drawn.

Coaching Tips

1. Always stress to the dodgers, “Dodge to score!”

2. Defense must communicate. Your goaltender must be vocal while in the net. He has command of the field in front of him. Be sure to teach your goaltender and defensemen to orally communicate through every pass made by the offense.

3. Offense must stay spread. This is key for young players to learn. If the offense is spread wide then the defense is more vulnerable, slides will be easier to recognize, and ball movement will be easier because there will not be a lot of pressure on the ball.

4. Be sure to communicate with your players what they want to call the slides. Many coaches have different terms for their slides. Some use numbers (I’m the 1, I’m the 2, etc) and some use names (I’m hot, I’m fire, I’m off, etc.). Just be sure to teach the players the calls you want them to be using.

Y Drill From X

121

Set-Up1. Place two attack men behind the

goal on opposite sides of the crease as diagramed by A1 and A2.

2. Place a third attack man on the crease as diagramed by A3, and a midfielder 6 yards above the restraining line as diagramed by M1.

3. Have each of the offensive players covered by a defenseman as diagramed by D1-D4.

4. The ball is with one of the attack men.

Instructions1. The purpose of the “Y” drill is to

help the defense understand slide packages and for the offense to practice recognizing defensive slides, doubles, and recoveries.

2. The drill starts with an attack man dodging. When the attack man dodges, the defenseman on the crease becomes the number one (1) slide. The defender covering the midfielder becomes the number two (2) slide and the defenseman covering the ball will become the recovery or (3) slide if he gets beat.

3. There is no set way that this drill is supposed to be run other than to stress the important facts on both sides of the ball.

4. The offensive goal is for the attack men and the midfielder to move the ball quickly, dodge hard, and try to confuse the defensive slide packages while trying to score. The offense should concentrate on drawing a slide, passing the ball quickly and dodging the weak side of the field to create scoring and odd man opportunities.

5. The defensive goal is to slide effectively while staying within the team’s defensive strategy. If the defense plays hard and smart they should be able to stop the offense from creating scoring opportunities.

Coaching Tips1. Defensively, stress communication.

As the offense moves the ball and dodges frequently it is imperative that the defense understands when and where to recover. Be sure that young players understand the difference between doubling the ball (when both defenders stay with the dodger and pressure him to take the ball away), and sliding (when a man is beat and the closest or set player slides to the man to prevent him from scoring). When players slide be sure that the original defender is released to pick up the open man on the field.

2. Offensively stress quick ball movement, and strong dodges. When players dodge they should always dodge to score. To become a better player they have to recognize a double or slide coming and then move the ball quickly. Once the ball is passed the receiving player should automatically pass the ball to the weak side or dodge the weak side of the field. This creates odd man situations and scoring opportunities.

2-2-2 Offensive Drill

122

Set- Up 1. Start with six players. Each

player should start in one of the six positions diagramed.

2. A goalie is in the net. 3. The balls start with player 1. 4. The extra players (E), should line

up behind player 1.

Instructions1. Player 1 begins by passing to

player number 2. Player 1 follows his pass.

2. The ball continues to be passed around from player 2 to player 4. After each pass the player follows to fill that position in.

3. On the pass from player 3 to player 4, player 5 cuts from the high left crease and sets a pick on the low right crease for player 6.

4. Player 6 cuts off the pick and receives a pass from player 4. He then takes a shot on goal.

5. Player 4 then becomes the picking player number 5.

6. Player 5 then becomes the cutting and shooting player number 6.

7. Once player 6 shoots he should return to the end of line 1.

8. Begin a new ball once player 2 passes the ball to player 3. For example, player 1 follows his pass and becomes player 2. At this point the next player in line 1 can start the drill. This makes for a fast paced drill that helps players understand a basic 2-2-2 play.

9. Continue until all players have run through once or twice.

10. Then switch the starting ball locations. These can be seen in the diagrams below.

Coaching Tips 1. The 2-2-2 is an effective offense

that can have many plays develop out of the set. This drill helps players to understand that quick ball movement around the perimeter will confuse the defense. If the two crease players work hard during the outside ball movement there is a good chance that one of the crease players can spring free for a quick shot on goal.

2. During a game the players on the crease should be continually moving inside to adapt to the position of the ball. By running this drill from the different starting positions players can understand the space and positioning that will allow for a good shot no matter where the ball is being passed from.

3. Once this drill has been run from all locations add a couple of defensemen in the middle to try to stop the cutter from scoring. This is better understood by reading The Survivor Drill.

1-3-2 Offensive Drill

124

Set-Up1. Divide the offensive players (attack

and midfielders) into groups of 6. 2. Have three attack men assume

positions 1, 2, and 3 on the field. 3. Have three midfielders assume

positions 4, 5, and 6 on the field. 4. Place a goalie in net. 5. Start with the balls at position 6.

Instructions1. Player 6 starts by passing to player

5. After the pass player 6 follows to fill the number 5 spot.

2. Player 5 begins to dodge immediately down the right side of the field after receiving the pass. When player 5 begins his dodge, player 2 clears through, and player 1 sprints out to give help to player 5.

3. Player 4 now clears out of the crease to fill position 6.

4. Player 5 will pass the ball to player 1.

5. Player 1 will catch the ball and immediately turn and dodge back to the left side of the field. When player 1 begins to dodge back, player 3 will sprint to the crease and set a pick for player 2 who is clearing through.

6. Player 1 will pass the ball to player 2 for the shot.

7. After the shot is taken the players should now be in different positions. Player 1 becomes player 3. Player 2 becomes player 1, and player 3 becomes player 2. In the midfield, player 4 becomes player 6. Player 5 becomes player 4, and player 6 becomes player 5.

8. Run this sequence three times so the players get a turn in each position. After all players have had turns in each position substitute in the next group. Restart the drill.

Coaching Tips 1. The 1-3-2 is an offense that can

have many plays develop through player movement. However, this drill helps to teach a few of the important points when the offense is in this set. First it is important that the attack and midfield understand that they are working as a unit of three in triangle. Players are always moving and replacing their teammates. Secondly, it helps players to understand the importance of creating space. This is diagramed by player 2 clearing through to allow player 5 to have room down the side to dodge and pass. Finally, it helps to teach players the importance of anticipation. Understanding that scoring opportunities often develop two, three, or four passes away from where the ball is initiated from is a skill that all players need to develop early.

2. As a coach, remember this drill can be used as the foundation of many plays. However, if players don’t understand the importance of creating space, support, balance, and working to get their teammates open then it will be hard to generate
