OPERAS AND MUSICALS

MET Operas at Town Hall Theater

On Saturday, January 5th, the Met offers a rare opportunity to witness

Berlioz’s vast epic, “Les Troyens”, last performed at the Met in 2003. Deborah

Voigt, Susan Graham, Bryan Hymel, and Dwayne Croft lead the starry cast,

portraying characters from the Trojan War. Met Principal Conductor Fabio Luisi

marshals the large-scale musical forces.

Then on Saturday, January 19th, the Met presents

Donizetti’s “Maria Stuarda”. Mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato, one of the world’s

most exciting singers, takes on the virtuosic bel canto role of the doomed Mary,

Queen of Scots. Director David McVicar turns to the second opera of Donizetti’s

Tudor trilogy, which explores regal characters at fateful moments of their lives.

Elza van den Heever sings Elizabeth I, and Maurizio Benini conducts this Met

Premiere.

Both operas will be presented “Live in HD” at the Town Hall Theater. Tickets for both

operas are $24 each. Check your Lodge calendar for leave times for the bus.

Noye’s Fludde

This one-act opera is a unique take on the well-known biblical tale

of Noah and his Ark. It is a foundational story that helps humankind

understand its place in the world, its responsibility to care for it and the

balance – between nature and man, between man and God – that must be

achieved to sustain it.

The Opera Theatre of Weston will present Noye’s Fludde at the

Paramount Theatre in Rutland on Sunday, January 6th. Continuing OTW’s mission of “bringing

children to opera and opera to children”, this production will reach new heights as the majority of the

cast will consist of local youngsters taking the parts of Noye’s sons and their wives and twelve pairs

of animals.

Tickets for this inspiring production are $15 or $28 (depending on seating area). The bus will

leave Otter Creek at 12:30 P.M.

Sondheim and Lapine’s “Into the Woods”

Middlebury College’s Department of Music and the Town Hall Theater

co-produce a staged version of “Into the Woods” this month at the Town Hall

Theater. Doug Anderson is the Stage Director, with Carol Christensen as

Musical Director and Tim Guiles as Band Director/Conductor.

We have chosen the Saturday evening performance on January 26th for

Otter Creek residents to attend. Tickets are $12 each and are sure to sell out

quickly, so sign up soon! The bus will leave The Lodge at 7:15 P.M. for this performance.

Resident Review

“The Metropolitan Opera”

The Metropolitan Opera season has started. Living in Shelburne, we are fortunate to have the

privilege of seeing the simulcasts in high definition directly from the stage of the opera house in New

York.

These thrilling performances are broadcast regularly and we see them at the Palace 9 Theatre

nearby. International stars of the opera world are featured. In addition to experiencing the brilliance

of the voices and the music, we are privileged to be taken backstage to see the intricacies of making

a production, including staging, costumes, ballet and special effects. The singers, in brief interviews,

demystify the complexity of their roles, and share the highs and lows of their performances.

Transportation is provided by the management of The Lodge. Performances are Saturday

afternoons at 1:00 P.M. Tickets are $25 and should be reserved by Wednesday prior to the

performance.

Reminder and Notice to New Residents

We have two in-house meetings, organized by residents of The Lodge, which might be of interest

to you.

Our “Book Club” meets the first Tuesday of every month at 10:30 A.M. in the Theater Room.

A new book, suggested by our members, is selected for each month. Copies are purchased by our

coordinator. The book may be a classic or a fairly recent novel. More details can be obtained by

speaking with resident Jane Figg.

Our “Current Events” meet the third Tuesday of each month at 10:30 A.M. in the Theater Room.

Topics of recent events are chosen for discussion, which are of state, national or international

interest. Material is supplied to focus the discussions. More details can be obtained by speaking

with resident Bunny Wilkening. The discussion for January will be, “The Pros and Cons of Living

at The Lodge at Shelburne Bay.”

Tension, Improved Quality of Sleep, Relief from Depression and Increased Range of Motion. Angel

will visit The Lodge on January 14th at 11:00 A.M. in the Great Room.

Jeanne Camouche will come to The Lodge to present “A Tour of Italy” on January 21st at

2:00 P.M. Camouche works for Bayada and has many years invested in the heath and well being of

seniors.

Staff Appreciation Party

The Staff appreciation Party on December 12th was a decided

success, judging from the cheerful reactions of the staff members

attending. The desserts were excellent as usual, but the distribution of

envelopes to all the people who make life easy for us was the main

attraction. Margaret Bullard, the Director of Dining Services,

particularly livened up the party when she presented to her staff; they

got an enthusiastic welcome.

The Staff appreciation Committee is grateful for the response from

residents; their generosity has certainly warmed up the holiday season

for the staff community!
