The Long Parliament & the Civil War 2. a) The nickname of the parliament that Charles dissolved in 1640 is known as the ³Short Parliament´. He replaced it with the ³Long Parliament´. b) Charles¶ best supporters, Strafford and Laud were executed by the Parliament. This happened because Charles gave way to the parliament to hand them over in order to get some desperately needed money. c) He tried to arrest the deep-seated parliamentary leaders, and punish them as traitors, to gain control. He led 500 soldiers in person to storm the House of Commons and tried to arrest the leaders. Cautioned, the radicals fled and asked for an army. D) The Royalist army consisted of nobles who were used to fighting and riding. Parliament¶s troops were local townspeople and farmers ± they were no trained soldiers. Even though the royal troops were significantly superior, the parliament controlled the powerful English Navy, so Charles had to have a quick battle.
