Longwood Letter - November 2008 November 2008 Volume 2, Issue 11 News For The Residents of Longwood Letter T he LONGWOOD Submitted by Tracey Brainard Just wanted to send a special thanks to the families of Longwood, to let them know what a great group we have here in our neighborhood. The warm and kind hands of these residents reached out to those few of us left who did not have power restored until more than 2 weeks after Ike had passed through. We want to thank all of you who acknowledged this and took the tremendous time and effort to prepare and deliver hot meals to our families. I heard many words of kindness by those of us who rec’d the meals- the food was great and thoughtfully prepared. Please accept our thanks and appreciation for this kind act. Thanks to all the neighbors who pulled together in this time of need to get our community cleaned up and safely back to normal. Cy-Woods High School Submitted by Gia Rodriguez Cy-Woods High School presents its very first musical, Crazy for You, featuring a book by Ken Ludwig and music by George and Ira Gershwin. The 1992 Tony Award-winning show has been called ‘riotously entertaining’ and includes such classic Gershwin songs as ‘Embraceable You,’ ‘I Got Rhythm,’ and ‘Nice Work If You Can Get It.’ ‘I am very excited about the Cy-Woods Community coming together for such a large musical,’ says Wendy Carrell, the director of the Cy-Woods Theater Program. ‘We will have the choir, band, orchestra, and theater departments working together to make our1st musical become a reality. I love the high-paced tap numbers and Ken Ludwig’s sense of comedy. I wanted a classic musical that is written for today’s audiences. It’s going to be a blast.’ Performances are on November 14, 15, 17 at 7pm and November 16 at 2pm at the Cy-Woods High School Auditorium, 16825 Spring Cypress Rd. Want To Take Years Off Your Age, Try Changing Your Hair….

Submitted by Michelle Lasher If there is one thing people see every day when they lookat our faces, it is our hair. The color, shine and texture of thehair can be a great gauge of how old a person is.As we age,our hair tends to loose that natural shine andflowing texturing. The natural hair body falls limp and we are left with a mess ofunmanageable hair. But, that does not have to be the case… Herearethetop3changesthatcantakeyearsoffyourrealage:Highlights = Younger Locks When highlights are placed in just the right spots on thehead, they will frame the face and drop the years from how oldyou look. The key is to not overdue the highlights. The colorshould be just a few shades off the base and the highlights, soft and sun kissed. There is a difference between highlightingand chunking and your salon needs to know the difference.Layer For A Younger Look When hair is heavy and falls around the face, it makes uslook older. The lighter our hair feels, the lighter our spiritsand the less drowning our hair will be. The salon should cutface framing layers into the style you have chosen. Even if the“picture” you are going for does not have layers, the additionof a few around the face will lighten the do and your age.Shine, shine, shine Younghairisshinyhair.Thatlusterisoneofthefirstthingstodisappearwithage.But,youcanregainthatshineandnaturally.Asweetsmellingnaturaloilcanbeplacedontheheadforafewhoursaweektomoistureandrevitalize.Onadailybasis,stacktheshineproductsforthebestresults.Theshampoo,conditioner,gel,mousseandhairsprayyouuseshouldallsaytheyincreaseshine.Happy Uplifting Youthfulness!

• Earn at least 7% growth of your income base—guaranteed—with the opportunity to pursue even higher market upside.

• Shield your retirement income from market declines.

• Create a stream of monthly income checks that are guaranteed for life.

• Enjoy access to your account value whenever you need it.

Ask Your Rock for Retirement IncomeSM

What if I want to access my account value? You can do so at any time. Please note, however, that excess withdrawals will proportionately affect the amount of subsequent income. As with most annuities, surrender charges may apply. Withdrawals and distributions of taxable amounts are subject to ordinary income tax and, if made prior to age 591/2, may be subject to an additional 10% federal income tax penalty. Withdrawals also reduce the annuity’s death benefit and account value.

Who stands behind the guarantees?Annuity guarantees are based on the claims-paying ability of the issuing company. That’s why it’s wise to choose one with proven financial strength. Prudential issues annuities through three U.S.-based companies: Pruco Life Insurance Company; in New York, by Pruco Life Insurance Company of New Jersey, Newark, NJ; or by Prudential Annuities Life Assurance Corporation, Shelton, CT.

Is there a fee? There is a fee for electing a guaranteed minimum withdrawal benefit. Also, variable annuities have fees, expenses and surrender charges, which you’ll find in the prospectus.

What is a variable annuity anyway? It’s a contract with an insurance company. You put money in to invest for retirement, and you can defer taxes every year until you withdraw the money. When you retire, you can turn your savings into a stream of regular payments that are guaranteed for life. This used to mean giving up control of your savings. Not anymore.

How does this benefit work? You add the guaranteed withdrawal benefit to a Prudential annuity. Then, you allocate your money among professionally managed portfolios based on your needs. Prudential gives you lots of choices, including alternative asset classes such as commodities or real estate investment trusts, which add diversification that can help reduce the effects of market volatility. When you get to retirement, you can activate our guaranteed withdrawal option, which allows you to draw regular income for life—even if your account value should hit zero.

Am I protected if the market goes down?Yes. Like any annuity, the account value is subject to market fluctuation, investment risk and possible loss of principal. But, should the market go down, Prudential guarantees your income base will achieve at least 7% annual compounded growth for the first 10 years, or until you begin taking withdrawals (if sooner). Also, during periods of market decline, Prudential may automatically move a portion of your assets from variable portfolios to the AST Investment Grade Bond Portfolio to help minimize risk to your account value. Money is moved back when the market rises. You should know that, depending on the timing of the transfer, this could affect your ability to participate immediately in market recoveries.

Reprinted with permission from the American Council on Exercise

Sir William Osler, the famous Canadian medical doctor, once quipped, “There’s only one way to treat the common cold — with contempt.” And for good reason. The average adult has two to three respiratory infections each year. That number jumps to six or seven for young children.

Whether or not you get sick with a cold after being exposed to a virus depends on many factors that affect your immune system. Old age, cigarette smoking, mental stress, poor nutrition and lack of sleep have all been associated with impaired immune function and increased risk of infection.

KEEPING THE IMMUNE SYSTEMIN GOOD SHAPE

Can regular exercise help keep your immune system in good shape? Researchers are just now supplying some answers to this new and exciting question. Fitness enthusiasts have frequently reported that they experience less sickness than their sedentary peers. For example, a survey conducted during the ‘80s revealed that 61 percent of 700 recreational runners reported fewer colds since they began running, while only 4 percent felt they had experienced more.

Further research has shown that during moderate exercise, several positive changes occur in the immune system. Various immune cells circulate through the body more quickly, and are better able to kill bacteria and viruses. Once the moderate exercise bout is over, the immune system returns to normal within a few hours.

STAYING IN SHAPE TO EXERCISEFor athletes who are training intensely

for competition, the following guidelines can help reduce their odds of getting sick.

Eat a well-balanced diet. The immune system depends on many vitamins and minerals for optimal function. However, at this time, there is no good data to support supplementation beyond 100 percent of the Recommended Dietary Allowances.

Avoid rapid weight loss. Low-calorie diets, long-term fasting and rapid weight loss have been shown to impair immune function. Losing weight while training heavily is not good for the immune system.

Obtain adequate sleep. Major sleep disruption (e.g., three hours less than normal) has been linked to immune suppression.

Avoid overtraining and chronic fatigue. Space vigorous workouts and race events as far apart as possible. Keep “within yourself” and don’t push beyond your ability to recover.

CAN EXERCISE REDUCE YOUR RISK OF CATCHING A COLD?In other words, every time you go for a

brisk walk, your immune system receives a boost that should increase your chances of fighting off cold viruses over the long term.

SHOULD YOU EXERCISE WHEN SICK?Fitness enthusiasts and endurance

athletes alike are often uncertain of whether they should exercise or rest when sick.

Although more research is needed, most sports medicine experts in this area recommend that if you have symptoms of a common cold with no fever (i.e., symptoms are above the neck), moderate exercise such as walking is probably safe. Intensive exercise should be postponed until a few days after the symptoms have gone away. However, if there are symptoms or signs of the flu (i.e., fever, extreme tiredness, muscle aches, swollen lymph glands), then at least two weeks should probably be allowed before you resume intensive training.

B — bring it to schoolA — assists youC — convenientK — keeps your stuff organizedP — plain or fancyA — adjustableC — can hold lots of booksK — know how to use one? What does that spell? Backpack! Backpacks make it easy to carry all of your school essentials. Balancing all those books, papers, notebooks, binders, and school supplies in your arms would be pretty tough without one. And all the little zippered pockets and compartments can help keep you organized. But backpacks also can be a real pain. Here’s why: They can cause injuries if kids trip over them or hit someone with one — accidentally or on purpose. They’re heavy so you don’t want one to fall on your head or your hand. And heavy backpacks also can strain your back. Because backpacks are a fact of kid life, let’s talk about backpack safety. Here are two big backpacking rules:

Watch that backpack! Like a disobedient pet, backpacks can get away from you sometimes, so keep an eye on yours. Keep it out of the way where people are walking, such as hallways, the middle aisle on the bus, and the walkway between desks in class. You’ll also want to watch out for falling backpacks if you’ve stored it on the top shelf of your locker. Check out your blind spot. Before taking your pack off or putting it on, take a look out around you and behind you. This is what your mom or dad does when they back the car out of a parking space. You don’t want to back into anyone with your backpack. And, of course, don’t try to hit someone with your backpack. Loaded down with books, it’s like hitting them with a bag of bricks.

1.

2.

Be Kind to Your Back, Neck, and Shoulders Sometimes, backpacks can give a kid a backache or cause pain in the neck or shoulders. To avoid this, follow these rules:

Use both shoulder straps so you distribute the weight evenly. Wearing your backpack on only one shoulder may cause you to lean to one side. Stand up straight. If your backpack makes you hunch forward or lean to one side, you may be carrying too much weight or not using both shoulder straps. Limit the weight. This can be tough because sometimes you can't choose to carry fewer books. But when you can leave a few books behind, do so. Doctors recommend carrying no more than 10% to 15% of your body weight. For example, if you weigh 80 pounds, your backpack shouldn't weigh more than 8 to 12 pounds. Give your back a break. When you can, leave your backpack in your locker and carry just what you need.

Talk to your mom or dad if you have problems putting your backpack on or taking it off. Also, let a parent know if you have any aches, pain, tingling, or numbness (no feeling) in your back or arms.Tips for Using Backpacks Having the right kind of backpack can reduce problems. So if it’s time for you to get a new backpack, consider these tips:

Try a backpack with wheels. (Ask if your school allows these first. Because they glide along the floor, they can cause tripping). If you choose a traditional backpack, pick one with wide, padded straps that won't dig into your shoulders. Look for a pack with multiple compartments inside so the weight can be distributed more evenly.

Now you know how to carry your load of books safely. Happy backpacking!
