Why did the English & Spanish want colonies in America?
• To find gold and other natural resources.
What is a resource?
• The resources they were looking for were probably natural resources. A natural resource is a material source of wealth, such as timber (or wood), fresh water, or a mineral deposit that occurs in a natural state and has economic value.•It is not man made, but can be used for food, to build with, and trade or sell.

• England needed all of its ships for the war, so John White could not return with a shipload of supplies until about 3 years later.

Who was Sir Walter Raleigh?
• Raleigh was a wealthy friend of the Queen of England, who gave him permission to start a colony in North America.
• Twice he tried to start a colony in North Carolina, but failed.

Why did Raleigh’s first colony fail?
• The colonist did not plant enough crops to support the colony.
•The Indians nearby got tired of providing the colonist with food.
•The colonist began to starve and a ship from England picked up the survivors.

• England became involved in a war with Spain and sent no ships to check on the colony for 3 years.
• When ships finally did arrive, there was no sign of life in the colony.
• The only clue was the word “CROATOAN” carved into a tree.
