PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Our school and community has experienced a great loss at

the recent passing of Mr Bill Widders, former Aboriginal

Education Officer at Armidale City Public School. Mr

Widders was a well-respected and loved member of our

school community who supported many hundreds of

students in his time at our school. He is remembered by

our staff as being a lovely man who had the children at the

centre of everything he did at our school. Our thoughts go

out to his wife, Mrs Noni Widders, and family at this sad

time.

I would like to acknowledge the work done by the organising

committee and our teaching and support staff to make the

Education Week and NAIDOC Week activities such a

success. It was wonderful to see families join us last week

to participate in the flag raising ceremony, special

assembly, morning tea and open classrooms, and to hear of

the appreciation from our visitors. We were honoured to

meet with our special guest, Dr Jessa Rogers, and hear her

story. The students continued their celebration, dancing up

a storm at the school disco.

From time to time we hear of students and young people

using social media and technology in a manner that hurts

others, whether it is through comments or photos on

Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram or uploading videos to

Youtube. While technology is the tool being used, we need

to consider whether we truly know how this technology is

being used in the hands of our children and young people

outside of school.

Michael Grose, in his article Parenting in the Digital Age,

says that it is our ‘job is to educate kids about technology –

helping them be safe, smart and balanced users – so we

need some guidelines to follow. Every parent needs to set

their own guidelines suitable to their own situation’. He

suggests the following:

we need to be good role models and consider how we

use technology

think about expectations and rules for your kids in

the digital world

differentiate between uses, social media vs

educational purposes, and how you respond to usage

create social media mantras and scripts to keep kids

safe, eg ‘don’t talk to strangers’, ‘is it worth posting?’,

‘take a deep breath before hitting the send or post

button’, ‘do you want the principal to see this post?’

create tech-free zones and times – ‘bedrooms should

be tech free particularly at night to encourage

children to get a good night’s sleep’.

the family that plays together learns together –

there needs to be time away from technology as well.

If you have a child beginning school in 2019 and have not

submitted an enrolment form, we ask that you do so as soon

as possible. This will ensure that you receive information

about your child’s involvement in transition and orientation

activities and help our school in organisation of classes for

next year. Enrolment forms are available from the school

office or can be downloaded at the following link: https://

schoolsequella.det.nsw.edu.au/file/8a02d9b7-f934-401e-

b96a-0949f04a3e14/1/detsef.pdf. In addition to

completing the application to enrol, parents will need to

provide the child’s birth certificate or passport,

immunisation certificate and proof of address.

P&C NEWS

THANK YOU MEGAN !

The P&C would like to thank Megan Towie for coordinating the Clothing Pool at ACPS for the past 9 years. Megan has been a cheerful and welcoming face for many parents wishing to become more involved at the school over the years.

WORK OF THE FORTNIGHT

SPORTS NEWS Congratulations to Daniel on his selection in the North

West Rugby Union team. Daniel was originally selected as a

shadow reserve and has now been called up into the team.

Daniel will travel to Coffs Harbour at the end of this month

to participate in the State Carnival. We wish Daniel every

success at this next level.

On Monday, a team of 23 gymnasts competed at the North

West Championships in Armidale. Armidale City Public

School was the recipient of 3 team awards and all

competitors placed with a medal. This is a fantastic effort.

Well done!

The Armidale City Public School boys’ and girls’ touch

football teams competed in the Armidale PSSA Touch Gala

Day in Armidale on Tuesday. Several Armidale schools

competed in knockout rounds to progress through to the

next level of the competition.

This Friday a team of 50 athletes will represent Armidale

City Public School at the District Athletics Carnival. Please

make sure permission notes are returned to Mrs Kelly no

later than Thursday. Good luck to everyone competing and

we hope many personal bests are achieved on the day.

1/2KS CLASS NEWS The children have had a terrific start to Term 3, enjoying

the meal deal from the Athletics Carnival, beginning our

Major Games lessons in Sport, taking part in the cultural

events for NAIDOC Week and enjoying showcasing their

academic talents in Open Classrooms for Education Week.

This term we are looking at communication forms through

our Literacy unit ‘The Jolly Postman.’ We have learnt

about traditional methods of communication such as

message sticks and scar trees, and are learning about what

kinds of letters people send though the mail. We have even

had a go at emailing Mrs Woods! Part of this involved

learning about what information is safe to share online and

what is not. It has been very interesting.

We have also been reading ‘The Day the Crayons Quit’,

about some crayons who were unhappy with how they were

being used, so decided to write letters to their owner. It

has helped us understand that everyone has problems of

some sort, at some time, and that we have the power to

speak up for ourselves and find a solution.

We are looking forward to Book Week next week where we

will be searching for the “treasure” in each book we read.

We have thought about the BOOK characters we plan to

dress up as and have discussed the difference between

books that lead to movies, and movies that lead to books.

We have all tried to come up with a character from a ‘book

first’ story.

Class Teachers

3/4C CLASS NEWS Firstly I’d like to thank all the parents that organised to

meet with me during Week’s Two and Three. If there are

any that still wish to make an appointment, please feel free

to contact the school to organise a time or send in a note

with your child.

It has been a busy start to Term 3 and we have had a focus

on ‘Sustainability’ and continue to use related texts to

support our English studies. The topic of sustainability has

certainly stimulated some interesting conversations.

Students have been actively engaging with the new PE and

sports cycle for the term. This involves many of the

fundamental movement skills and games that utilise the

skills taught last semester.

Students were captivated by the visit from the NSW State

Library and were able to see some amazing artefacts of

historical significance. Some of the objects that were on

display are not normally available to the public or students

in the country. Children dressed in period costumes and got

an interactive experience in Australian history.

Congratulations to the many students in our class that have

been achieving great successes in a variety of endeavours.

Members of the class have been involved in Tournament of

Minds, Public Speaking, Let’s Hang It, Gymnastics, Cross-

Country, and the Spelling Bee. Good luck to those students

who continue to challenge themselves in their area of

interest and thank you to the parents that support these

opportunities.
