ENTERING HOLY WEEK

When we talk “peak season” in the mountains, we usually mean fall color. But for the

Church, Holy Week is peak season. In this one week, we experience life with Christ

with a kind of richness, vibrancy, and intensity that cannot be matched in other sea-

sons. Here’s how we experience God’s grace in the shadow of Christ’s cross during Holy

Week.0

Palm/Passion Sunday, worship at 8 and 10:00 a.m. We’ll

begin worship in the commons area, hear the processional gospel, and

enter the sanctuary with palms waving, remembering Jesus’ triumphal

entry into Jerusalem. But with the reading of the Passion

from Luke, with several Good Shepherd members taking

part, we enter Lent as we hear of Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross.

Maundy Thursday, worship at 5:00 p.m. Remember when we

confessed our sin and acknowledged our mortality on Ash Wednesday?

We did not receive the typical words of forgiveness that night. But

here at the end of Lent, we do. Worshipers will be invited to the altar

to receive from a pastor individual forgiveness of all their sins. After

celebrating communion and remembering Jesus’ last supper, the ser-

vice concludes with the stripping of the altar in preparation for Good

Friday, with the intoned words of Psalm 22 in the background, “My God, my God, why

have you forsaken me?”

Good Friday, worship at 5:00 pm. Come for the traditional

Tenebrae service. The chancel is stark and empty except for the

seven candles, which will be progressively extinguished as we hear

the Good Friday scriptures and remember Jesus’ suffering and

death on the cross for us. The service ends in darkness and silence.

Resurrection of Our Lord (Easter). One service at 9:30 am. We worship

together on this peak day of the peak season of the Church.

We’ll begin in the commons area and process together into the

sanctuary led by children and youth carrying banners, stream-

ers, and bells. We will use a festival setting of communion with

joyful hymns and anthems to praise God for raising Jesus

Christ from the dead for our sake and the sake of the world.

LENTEN SOUP SUPPERS

Please sign up on the bulletin board to bring soup and/or

dessert for the Lenten Soup Suppers following our Wednesday

worship service. We need three soups and three desserts

(triple recipe) for each Wednesday evening event.

Cardiac Rehab Unit at Transylvania Regional Hospital. She will be discussing heart

health. This is an outreach service of TRH, to help peo-

Why is this such a big deal???

64% who had no prior symptoms

“ YOU CAN’T TAKE IT WITH YOU” Some members of the congregation enjoyed a rather impromptu outing

to eat together and attend “You Can’t Take It With You” at Brevard

Little Theater, to support member Terry Moore. We will be working on

coordinating more such get-togethers in the near future. We’ll keep

you posted . . .

BETSY DAILEY TO VISIT LCGS MARCH 10th By now, you likely have received a letter and pledge card about the Good Shepherd

Creche in India in your mailbox at church or home. The pledge cards will be collect-

ed and dedicated on Sunday, March 10th. On that day, Betsy Dailey will join us to

share more about the Creche during the 10:00 a.m. worship service. She will be

available for further comments and to answer questions after the service at an

“Indian Coffee Hour” in the Fellowship Hall. Please plan to attend to learn more

about this vital ministry of our congregation.

SOUPER BOWL SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 3RD

Souper Bowl Sunday, held on February 3rd, was a great success, despite the diffi-

cult weather. The youth did a great job, and LCGS raised $ 895.25 for the Bread of

Life Soup Kitchen. Thank you, everyone, for your support!!!

LUTHERAN SERVICES CAROLINAS CHILD &

FAMILY SERVICES

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

Jeremiah 29:11

Just as a tiny seed can produce the

mightiest of trees, the seeds of hope

planted by Lutheran Services Carolinas

(LSC) child and family services (formerly

Lutheran Family Services) can also yield

significant results in the lives and futures

of God’s most vulnerable populations.

The ministries of LSC child and family

services are celebrated in congregations

around the state during the month of March. For more than 35 years, our own

child and family services organization

has supported special programs aimed at

promoting healing and wholeness. These

programs include child and youth ser-

vices, such as foster care, special needs

adoptions, and residential care for youth

with developmental disorders, and ser-

vices geared toward adults with develop-

mental disabilities or traumatic brain in-

juries, homeless veterans, and refugees.

If you would like to make a tax-deductible contribution to support the work of

LSC child and family services, make checks payable to Lutheran Services Carolinas

and write “Child and Family Month” on the memo line. Contributions may be mailed

to P.O. Box 947, Salisbury, NC 28145, or made securely online at

www.LSCarolinas.net.

Thank you for your work on behalf of children and families around the state

and for helping LSC child and family services plant the seeds of hope.

COUNCIL NOTES

President Thelma Erickson called the February meeting to order at 4:00 p.m. on

the 19th. All Council members were present. Treasurer Ed Hennig reported that

income slightly exceeded expenses in January. A correction of $2000 for pay-

ment to the ELCA Portico fund will be made to the 2012 end-of-year information.

The Membership Committee will appoint a subgroup to plan for the expansion of

website opportunities and report back to the Council. A motion was approved to

change Leigh Ann Stinson’s title from Interim Parish Administrator to Parish Ad-

ministrator. The Call Committee reported that three interviews have been

scheduled in the next three weeks. Facilities concerns were discussed, specifical-

ly the leak in the Sanctuary heat exchanger and the need for new carpet in the

Fellowship Hall and Nursery.

GUESS WHO’S COMING TO DINNER

Please sign up on the bulletin board by the last week of March for Guess Who’s Com-

ing to Dinner. It’s been seven years and a lot of new members since we have done this

fun mixer of our members. A multiple of 12 pairs (12, 24

etc.) is needed to work easily, so that no two pairs get to-

gether more than once. If you are single, just get another

single to form your pair. but it can be worked with a dif-

ferent number. Normally, there will be three pairs of us

scheduled to eat at each home in April, May and June. That

will vary if we have an odd number sign up.

One of the pairs is scheduled to host the dinner in April, calling to determine

the date and providing the main course. The second pair will

bring the salad. The third pair will bring the dessert. In May

and June, the second or third pair will be scheduled to host

the dinner, and the first pair will be scheduled to bring one

of the other items of food, never being scheduled to pro-

vide the same thing twice. When you are the host, you may

want to invite additional guests, who are new or can’t partic-

ipate for some reason. Please consider signing up for this fun activity, and get to

know your fellow church members even better. We hope to see you there!

NORTH CAROLINA SYNOD

Two churches of the North Carolina Synod, Christ Lutheran

Church in Greensboro and St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Lum-

berton, sent us letters telling us they prayed for LCGS and

our ministries in February. The letters are posted on the bul-

letin board.

MAKING SUMMER PLANS? HOW ‘BOUT CAMP?

Faith takes time to grow and children need summer faith camp more than ever. Time

away in intentional Christian community is life-changing and critical for faith develop-

ment in young people (and adults). Lutheridge in Arden and Lutherock in Linville have

summer programs for 1st graders through 12th graders. In addition, family camp and Mu-

sic Week is available for all ages.

Summer brochures are available in the commons area. You can register by phone at

684-2361 or online at LLMI.net. The entire summer brochure is on the website. There

are lots of options for summer activities. But there are few that can form faith more

than a week at Lutheridge or Lutherock. Check it out.
