Student Learning, Innovative Pedagogy and 630 new Apple iPads The School has received 630 Apple iPads from the Department of Education. This is an extraordinary addition to our already expansive and well maintained technology equipment. The technology team led by Mr Dave Steedman worked tirelessly through out the holidays to ensure their smooth implementation from day one in 2020. They will be used as a resource to enhance and support:

1. Our pedagogy to better engage students; 2. Our pedagogy and professional learning for how we use them effectively in the classroom; 3. Our classroom organisation; 4. Our school leadership. Selected staff will use class sets of 30 iPads with their students in each Key

Learning Area to allow students to be immersed in innovative learning environments where:

• Learning and learner engagement are central to ensure students’ active engagement • Collaboration is practised and students can enjoy learning in a social and collaborative envi-

ronment • High expectation relations are key between staff and students and teachers know learners’

motivations and emotions • Individual differences are able to be better recognised and catered for • Learning is challenging but enjoyable • Horizontal and integrated connections across Key Learning Areas is promoted • Learning and Assessment are supported by on-going feedback

Bus shelters Finally, our bus shelters are to be constructed by Byron Bay Council in the Easter holidays. There will be three 8x30-metre shelters across the front of the school to protect our students from sun and rain. Cooler classrooms Over 60% of our classrooms will be airconditioned under the Cooler Classroom Project later this Year. Policy Implementation We continue to thank parents for their cooperation to implement our Attendance, Electronic Device/Mobile Phone and Uniform policies. During the recent wet and slightly cooler weather, we noticed stu-dents have not yet fully sorted their winter jumpers. It is expected students will wear the school’s blue hoodie (preferred) available from the school uniform shop or a plain black jumper. We appreciate your cooperation with this. Communication We want to have superior communication with the whole Mullumbimby High school community. I have outlined our present communication systems below. Our aim is to:

• Engage and work with the ‘WHOLE’ school community • Employ clear communication strategies which lead to improved student, staff, parent and com-

munity engagement, enhanced staff morale and positive consultative decision-making

We value any feedback on being better communicators and I thank parents who have already provided valuable feedback. As you will see in this edition of the Lyrebird, our aim for Mullumbimby High School — to always be a dy-namic school community — is alive and well. Please enjoy reading about our student learning opportunities and achievements. All staff are working diligently to ensure there are a variety of excellent opportunities for all students. Dear Year 7 Parents and Carers, I hope this message finds you well. Although we have many tired young people this week we're still seeing so many smiles and it's such a joy coming to school each morning to be greeted by such joyful faces, and I'm loving getting to spend time building relationships with each of your children both in and out of the classroom. Our Parenting Teenagers Course, run by BYS' Karim Kaufman, was a really wonderful opportunity for some of our Year 7 parents to connect, share and support each other. Karim's experience working with Young People, combined with the experiences of those in attendance, set the tone for a really lovely evening of fruitful discussion about what to expect of the upcoming teenage years, and allowed a space for everyone to reflect on our relationships with ourselves as parents, and our relationship with our young people. We look forward to hosting more events such as this to facilitate a strong sense of community among our Year 7 parents, so stay tuned for more information - or let me know if this is something you might be interested in, so I know to contact you in future. I recently sent home a couple of notes:

1. Year 7 Team Building Day note - our Team Building Day in Byron is always a lot of fun, and an excellent opportunity for students to develop new relationships. If you could return this note (White pages only) with payment ($15) to Student Services that would be wonderful.

2. Year 7 Camp Information Note - Our camp is not until Term 4, however, we understand that it is helpful for families to be able to budget for these events - as such you are now able to begin paying in increments of any value either online, or in person at Student Services. The initial $50 deposit is not due until Week 1 of Term 2.

Please note, there has been an amendment to the cost of the camp, and whilst the initial note reads the cost of $260, the total cost will now be $250 (which includes a cold treat on the first night's beach walk). Please find attached a copy of the note with the new cost which I will also send home with your children in the next week. Enjoy the rest of your week, and don't hesitate to contact me if you have any concerns - or positives! Regards,

Ms Sophie Mount

Camp for Year 7 Students Mullumbimby High School highly values school camps as part of our broader curriculum. Camps enhance the learning experience obtained in the classroom by allowing students to discover new strengths, friendships and capabilities in a fun and relaxed outdoor setting. Camps teach practical and physical skills while also improving each child’s resilience, self-confidence and social connections.

At the start of Term 4 (14 -16th October), Year 7 will be attending their first camp which is located in in beautiful Burleigh Heads. Students will participate in many fun activities such as tubing, surfing and night beach walks. This is a wonderful opportunity for our new Year 7 students to make new friends and get to know their teachers better in a relaxed environment. Notes have already been sent home with Year 7 students. A deposit of $50 and the Expression of Interest slip are due back to Student Service by 1st May. For more information, please contact our Year 7 Advisor, Sophie Mount ([email protected])

At the end of Term 3 (21 – 23rd September), Year 8 will be participating in a 3-day camp in the beautiful Numinbah Valley, located near the Natural Arch on the QLD border. This camp will provide students with the opportunity to camp overnight with their friends while completing activities such as mountain bike riding, flying fox, rock climbing, hiking and camp fires. Notes are coming home with Year 8 students today. The deposit of $50 and completed application form needs to be returned to Student Services by the end of

this term (7th April). For more information, please contact our Year 8 Advisor, Emily Langtry ([email protected]).

Families requiring financial assistance should contact their respective Year Advisor or Ms Bub-Connor ([email protected])

Indonesian

It’s been an exciting start to Indonesian in 2020 with courses running in Stages 4, 5 and 6 for the first time in a number of years. We’ve been so lucky to be a part of our iPad Pilot Program where Languages students have been enjoying using the iPads each lesson to research, consolidate learning and engage with exciting online competitions and quizzes. In Year 7, we have been focusing on greetings and introducing ourselves, whilst Year 9 are having a crash course of revision for their Stage 4 studies. Year 12 have begun their final three terms of schooling with gusto, and have been working non-stop to master some new grammatical concepts whilst exploring topics including health, celebrations and holidays. With Byron Harmony Festival coming up at Mullum Civic Hall on 21 March, there’s a wonderful opportunity for students interested in learning the Indonesian instrument Gamelan to take part in some free weekly workshops on a Monday afternoon from 4 to 5pm at the Steiner School, taught by some wonderful Indonesian musicians, with their efforts culminating in a performance at the Festival. If any student would like more information about this please see Ms Mount in the Maths staff room. — Ms Sophie Mount, Indonesian Teacher & Year 7 Adviser

LIBRARY NEWS Congratulations to Pearl Whitfield from Year 8

on the publication of her first novel Meya.

Meya is the first instalment in a fantasy trilogy

which she started writing when she was in Year

6. Pearl’s interest in writing started in Primary

school and one of her early memories was hav-

ing the Hobbit read to her when she was six.

These days Pearl enjoys reading many genres

although she says she enjoys Fantasy the most.

When asked about her favourite character in

her book she said it was Meya the fairy, who

she described as mysterious. Meya is

available to borrow from our school Library.

Our Library has a wide variety of fiction,

graphic novels and magazines which are

available for all students to borrow. It is great

to see so many students have been visiting the

library, borrowing and enjoying their reading.

Students are encouraged to always have a

book in their bag and to read regularly. The

Library is open for students to borrow before

school from 8:30 and at lunchtime.

This week Year 7 classes will be having a Library

Orientation where they will be completing a

survey on their favourite books. We do this

survey every year to find out what students

enjoy reading. We follow this up by purchasing books from student’s wish list. Students also participate in

a genre activity to help them find their way around the Library.

In English, Years 7 and 8 classes will be participating in Drop Everything and Read (DEAR) for 10 minutes

every English lesson. Students are encouraged to visit the Library to borrow a book that they enjoy and

keep it in their bag.

Students in Years 9 to 12 are invited to contribute to a wish list of books that they would like to see in the

Library.

All these strategies are being implemented to encourage students to read for pleasure as it is widely

recognized in research that reading for pleasure enhances literacy skills.

Printing and research: The Library is also open a 8:30am before school and at lunch time for students to

print and do research. Black and white printing is available for 20 cents per page. Colour printing is

available from the print room for 40 cent per page (the print room is closed on Fridays).

—Mrs Kerrie-Ann Eaton, Librarian

Youth Change Agent

Last week, two of our year 8 'Young Change Agent' teams participated in the Northern Rivers Final. Young Change Agents is a program that helps young people see problems as opportunities through the lens of social enterprise. Our new Young Change Agents pitched their social en-terprise solutions to problems they have identified and are passionate about! Mullumbimby High School ideas included an App that helped people with disabilities find suitable facilities that accommodate for their disability and the other team was all about turning plastic 'seabin' waste into alternate products including clothes. The teams presented to a packed audience, media and a team of judges including the Mayor of Tweed Heads, lecturers from Southern Cross University, as well as busi-ness owners who themselves are part of the social en-terprise.

High School Students Turn Social Issues into Business Opportunities

Changing the world isn’t easy, but one organisation is helping Northern Rivers High School students make it happen. Participants were given 48 hours to build a social en-terprise business, and the outcomes were staggering.

NBN Channel 10 posted a news item on those students

pitches! Click on the link:

In the Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA) Department

Visual Arts & Film Classes Mullum HS visual art students have started the year off with a variety of exciting projects. Year 7 visual art students are about to launch into their “through the window” paintings. All of Year 7 will be busy sketching up ideas to turn into colourful painted masterpieces inspired by the work of Fauve painter Matisse. In the meantime we are practicing our understanding of colour and our painting skills. Year 8 are on a journey of discovery, reflecting on their own culture and connecting with others in the wid-er world. Students are learning about art and the Chinese cultural revolution as well as discovering how artists express ideas and experiences through their art making. Why not ask your children to tell you about some of the Chinese artists they are studying. Our charming elective Year 9 and 10 students are enjoying studio time, exploring and experimenting with a range of 2D media, developing their observational skills. They are building confidence in their ability to in-terpret the world through self-expression and creativity. With a focus on foundation drawing skills some clever observational sketches and compositions are taking shape. Currently, Year 11 are amazed by Modernism and how the industrial revolution saw an explosion of ideas, in particular how artists started to question and change how they expressed and represented the world through their artmaking. Just like the Modernists, Year 11 will be challenging their ideas about how to rep-resent the world through their own 2D compositions. Year 12 are immersed in the beginnings of their Body of Work, with painting, sculpture, printmaking, instal-lation and video all being investigated and developed to communicate concepts ranging from identity, reli-gion, and climate to virtual reality. Their first interviews are approaching where they will discuss their ideas and techniques with a panel of art teachers for feedback, advice and further direction on their exciting cre-ative journeys. The Film classes are learning the process of production and post production with Silent films, Documen-taries, Opening sequences and short films being developed as they earn their camera licences and practice techniques in lip sync, green screen and titling. Later this term, Senior and elective art and photography students are set to travel to Brisbane’s GOMA for emersion in gallery culture. Currently the galleries WATER and INDIGENOUS WOMEN PAINTERS exhibition is showing. Our high school believes it is an essential part of our curriculum for students to experience highly original, expressive and challenging artworks in a gallery setting to rouse curiosity and inspire crea-tivity in our children. We hope you will support us in encouraging students to participate in this wonderful excursion opportunity. Music, Performance and Production The Music programs from Year 7 to Year 12 is covering a broad range of genres and experiences. The Year 7 “Playing Music” topic has a focus on learning keyboards skills and introducing the musical lan-guage . Year 8 are being immersed in “The Blues”, looking at issues of historical and cultural importance while learning the 12 Bar Blues Form, Blues Scale and Walking Bass. The Yr 9 Elective Music class is eager and excited to be discovering more about “Australian Music” in its

many contexts. A performance assessment piece and their own composition is keeping them very busy. Year 10 “Music and Technology” is providing much in the way of current practice and industry standards, especially with access to our new ipads for reference and software applications. At present, the Year 11 Music class is learning all about “Methods of Notation” and are preparing a compo-sition for discussion in the form of a Viva Voce. Year 12 are investigating the roles of instruments in “Small Ensembles” through performance and applied musicology, and are honing their listening skills and written responses for the up-coming HSC Aural exam. Various music ensembles have been utilising our music rooms at recess and lunch for practice opportuni-ties. The Year 8 Choir run by Mr Fletcher, has began rehearsing and will be joined later in the term by the all new Year 7 MHS singing group for some combined performances. Worth a mention also is the work and commitment of Mr Ivett and his Stage Crew, who are currently setting up two Silent Rehearsal workstations in F Block to be used during class time. — Mr Jason Fletcher, HT CAPA (relieving) and Mrs Natalie Grant, CAPA Teacher

Science

To kick off the year, the science faculty has been

focusing on getting students engaged in this term's

curriculum. Year 7 has been learning about the

nature and practice of science and of course the

highlight has been working towards getting their

Bunsen burner license. Year 8 has been busy with

learning about the scientific method, conducting

experiments and writing reports. Year 9 has been

learning about the importance of ecosystems and

with the recent fires and floods, this has been quite a

relevant unit of study! Year 10 has been exploring

Newton's laws of motion and getting a great

introduction into physics. Our agriculture students

have been braving the hot weather with our new

teacher Mr Ben Harris who is with us for this year.

They have been getting their veggie plots prepared

for the next growing season. Our marine studies

students have been learning all about CPR and water

safety to prepare for the numerous excursions and learning activities the course offers. And of course, our

senior students have been getting back into the considerable demands of the Preliminary and HSC courses.

Overall, it has been a busy but exciting start to the year and we look forwards to sharing more of it with our

learning community! — Mr Marshall Chang, HT Science (Relieving)

Swimming Carnival 2020 February the 5th saw the Petria Thomas Swimming Pool in Mullumbimby a wash with brightly dressed MHS students singing their sporting houses themes. After the water had settled following the “Mullet Run” a participation-based event the real action commenced with 100m Freestyle. The day was progressing nicely until a storm began to make its way down the coast from Brisbane. The pace was accelerated and the mar-shals had to work double time to get races swum as quickly as possible. Unfortunately some distant lighting put a stop to the carnival half way through the Back Stroke races. Thomas Cheek was a stand out on the day breaking records in the three events he was able to compete in prior to the suspension of the carnival. He broke the 100 Free record of 1:03.5 recording a time of 1:00.61, the Breast Stroke record of 1:24.79 with a time of 1:21.72 and the Back-Stroke record of 1:16.6 with a time of 1:15.41. We have also decided that Thomas will be recorded as the MHS 100 Fly record holder after posting a PB at the zone carnival of 1:08.00. Outstanding results that are testament to the hard work skill and dedication Thomas shows towards his swimming. Congratulations to all of our age champions:

2020 Swimming House Points

Congratulation to the Captains Shelby Booth and Luke Caldwell-Wearne as well as Vice Captains Kimberly

Brabazon and Lachlan Belleville of the mighty Acacia. Your leadership in the senior pyjama relay as well as

an extraordinary amount of great swimmers with second names between A-C saw the smallest sporting

house in the school come up with another resounding win.

Congratulations to the students who participated in this year’s swimming carnival. Thank you to all of you

that made it an enjoyable and memorable day.

FAR NORTH COAST ZONE CARNIVAL Congratulations to all our swimmers that went to Murwillumbah on Tuesday to represent Mullumbimby High School at the FNC zone carnival. Our talented swimmers fought hard and our school finished second in the zone, only 7 points behind Byron Bay High School. Multiple PBs were saw as our students again stepped up in the representative arena. PBs were saw on the day by: Cedar Eastwell if both Free and Beast; Charlotte Archibald in both 50 and 100 Back and 50 free; Natasha Fraser 100 Free and Breast and 50 free; Madison Caldwell-Wearne 100 back and free; Monet Shortland 100 and 50 free, Thomas Cheek 200 100 and 50 free and 100 fly; Seamus Graeme-Cook 100 back; and Lucas Grainey 50 free. Special congratulations go to Montannah Archibald, Thomas Cheek, and Mollie Cheek who are the FNC age champions for the 13’s 15’s and 17+ age groups. What a tremendous effort from these super talented young swimmers. The Mullum High team performed very well with so many students winning or coming a close second. With a top 2 finish needed to make it to North Coast it makes me very happy to say that the majority of our FNC swimmers will be representing the FNC and Mullumbimby High at the NC carnival in Coffs Harbour on Tuesday the 3rd of March. I would like to wish all our NC swimmers the best of luck when they compete in Coffs next week. - Mr Binkley, PDHPE Teacher and Sports Organiser
