The Lyric Letter PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE: Greetings everyone! I’m excited to enter one of DLOG’s most important times of the year. Here is what we have to look forward to: *Fundraising event on Jan. 27 honoring deceased member Hilja Herfurth who bequeathed an extensive gem collection to the School of Mines. We will enjoy dinner and special entertainment. *Master Class on Feb. 4 conducted by Jeremy Reger who will coach several singers to improve their techniques for the competition. It is fascinating and informative to see the changes good coaching can accomplish. Box Lunches may be ordered in advance. *Preliminary Competition on Feb. 25 from 9:00 am -4:30pm, at Bethany Lutheran Church where you will hear around wonderful 35 singers. Box lunches may be ordered in advance. *The Finals Competition on March 25, from1pm-5pm, is very special. We hear 15 fabulous singers compete and renown judges from all over the country choose the top 10 finalists. Monetary awards are granted to all singers. All events are held at Bethany Lutheran Church and are free-of-charge. *Reception for Judges and Finalists following the Finals Competition will be at Wellshire Events Center. Wine and hors d’oeuvres will be served while you visit with the judges and singers. There will be an opportunity to ask Judges and singers questions. *On April 4, Opera On Tuesday, the Finalist will sing at our luncheon and receive their awards. This is one of the highlights of the year! In this issue, you will also see our monetary awards schedule and what the DLOG gives to colleges in grants. This is also a very important part of our purpose, giving grants to colleges and opera programs to support them in all the good they do for young singers. In order for the Guild to continue supporting young singers and to give our members the opportunity to witness wonderful talent, the Board has decided it will be necessary for the dues to increase by $10 to $50 beginning in April 2017. We have had many cost increases: insurance, Country Club costs, and increased competition expenses. Please take advantage of these wonderful events and ask other interested people to attend. Our organization not only needs your monetary support but the singers would love to have an audience to encourage them to sing even better. We hope you participate in and enjoy all the upcoming events. We are here to serve our devoted members and we encourage you to bring your friends to help spread the joy of music and beautiful singing! Mark Van Arsdale, Tenor    We were very happy to welcome Mark among our finalists in our 2010 competition. He was well seasoned even before entering our program, having received his vocal training from two outstanding music programs in academia, Northwestern University and Indiana University. He had also participated in young artist programs at Tanglewood and Opera Theatre of St. Louis. And then he moved to France where he joined the Studio Artist program with the Opéra national du Rhin in Strasbourg, France where he has returned numerous times as a guest artist singing roles such as Ernesto in Don Pasquale and Marcellus in Hamlet.

A wonderful review from ResMusica, an on-line site that covers classical music and dance throughout Europe said “American Tenor Mark Van Arsdale distinguished himself with his vocal ease and clarity of timbre while facing formidable pages of music where most tenors find themselves in difficulty: the virtuosic areas “Il tuo sangue” and “Tu vivi (from G. F. Handel’s Opera Ariodante”) were executed disconcertingly easily…What breath!”  And, what a review!

Mark has also sung with acclaim in Paris, Rouen, Tours and Salzburg, Austria, and returned to the US for singing engagements with the Cheyenne Symphony and University of Indiana, among others.  It is so important for young singers to sing many roles in many different settings to build a career. Mark Van Arsdale has found those opportunities in Strasbourg, France and throughout Europe.  We look forward to his return to this country when the time is right!
