In about four weeks we'll meet for our first dinner meeting here

in Presque Isle (April 23’d at the Portage Restaurant).

My message in this Spring edition of the masthead is to look

forward to the summer and prepare yourself for a dandy time

in NE Michigan when you return to your summer home or cot-

tage.

It's all about perspective, anticipation, and planning. And of course there's Mother

Nature. Mix up those components and "voila' ", we have our summer of 2015.

We didn't actually have a full summer in 2014... I think most of us hardly ran a full

tank of gas through our various motor vessels. Let's presume we have a normal

boating or "up north" summer, and plan those 15 weekends between Memorial Week-

end and Labor Day.

Our winter is really hanging on up at the lake, and fishermen claim that the perch

fishing is exceptionally good right now, and there's about two feet of solid ice on

Grand Lake today. In another month, we'll have open water and some of us will be

chomping at the bit to get the first dock in the lake. Pretty hard to beat Steve Reis-

ner at that... he's put his in, even as ice patches float towards the outlet or crash

upon the shoreline.

Our board of directors have some plans for the betterment of the area, and as noted,

we plan to have our first meeting of 2015 at the Portage Restaurant, on Thursday,

April 23. Ted McKinnon reports a healthy balance in our finances, and we promise

to keep all projects moving forward.

Reporting on other projects, I hear from Dick Spencer of the unveiling of the new PI

Township Range Park soon, The Grand Lake Association is celebrating a milestone

birthday, and sister Janet Young will soon have her historical series of books pub-

lished very soon. Volume one will be available around Memorial weekend. (three

books covering Presque Isle, from Thomson Harbor to Bell Bay, each with their own

focus- from the 1830's to 1900, covering the lighthouses, the lumbering era, and the

hotels and early settlement).

Cont’d. Visiting Other Yacht Clubs

Some PIYC Members are busy traveling through

out the year, curiosity suggests one might think

about visiting a local Yacht Club and there are op-

portunities to do so.

Since the last Mackinaw sail race PIYC has had

an invitation to visit the Port Huron Yacht Club.

Your editors plan to make the visit this Spring and

report on the trip.

In some situations, such as when we recently visited Sau-

salito Yacht Club in California or the Tellico Yacht Club

in Knoxville, just a membership card of identification was

needed. In both these cases they invited us in as guests

and the Operations Manager or respective Commodores’ spent some time explaining the history of the Clubs and

invited us back when ever we were in the area. So—the

bottom line is ‘pre-planned communication and a current

membership card ‘(new stickers will be available to update

member cards provided in 2014 upon payment of dues).

Spring is around the corner, snow storms will soon become

a distant memory of the past and Float Plans will abound!

The youth sailing camp on Grand Lake The location will

be the same as previous years, Presque Isle Harbor Asso-

ciation Beach Club.

The program on Grand Lake is July 27-31. We need lots of kids to be registered, this is an open registration .

Presque Isle Yacht Club Mem-

bership and Dues / 2014 The Presque Isle Yacht Club is a civic organization dedi-

cated to the establishment and growth of a yachting com-

munity in Presque Isle Harbor Michigan.

Annual dues are $100 with a one time burgee fee of $25.

There is no initiation fee for membership. From time to

time various clothing and nautical accessory items may be

available at market prices. See page 6 for a membership

application

The club membership year is January 1st through Decem-

ber 31st. Applicants filing after September 1st are consid-

ered as having filed as of the following January 1st. The

months between are free.

Ship Wrecks & Northern Michigan

Trading and supply boats routinely passed Thunder Bay on their way to outposts at Mackinaw, Sault Ste. Marie, and Green Bay. In

1679, LaSalle's GRIFFON became the first major European vessel to pass by Thunder Bay, and many others were to follow. The

need to transport supplies to northern frontier posts stimulated construction of small brigs, sloops, and schooners. Thunder Bay

accumulated a large collection of shipwrecks because of its strategic location along shipping lanes, and because the bay and nearby

islands provided shelter for vessels during inclement weather.

One story is that of the West German freighter Nordmeer. The Nordmeer was on its first voyage through the Seaway when it was

wrecked on Nov. 19, 1966. The 12-year-old ship was up bound in Lake Huron and on its way to Chicago when the 470 foot, 8 inch

long vessel ran into Thunder Bay Shoals.

The ship had been battling gale force winds and thick snow when it hit the rocks about 12 miles east of Alpena, Michigan. A total

of 43 sailors were on board and a United States Coast Guard helicopter helped in rescue operations. All of the sailors were taken to

the Samuel Mather (v) and delivered to safety.

There was no hope in salvaging the heavily damaged freighter and the concern was about the 20,000 gallons of fuel on board be-

coming a pollution hazard. While some oil spilled into Lake Huron, the tanks remained intact until the fuel could be pumped out

by Massey Marine Salvage in 1969. The NOAA Facilities in Alpena continue to refresh and build North Eastern Michigan Marine

history and another visit might surprise those that have not been by in a couple of years.

Spring Events

Phyllis & John Vogelheim will provide an identification plate for the PIYC Bell at the Portage this Spring.

The bell was donated by Carlene Dunning and family, remembering John Dunning who was the first Chef

at the Portage restaurant, the home for PIYC activities.

Rogers City (Chamber & City) is hosting the Great Lakes Cruising Club in 2015. The former Mayor -Beach

Hall , is currently organizing the program. Exact dates will be reported when known. PI YC hosted the same

group years ago....

Shown on this page is a summary of bank activity since 8/6/2014. In the first quarter of 2015, a significant num-ber of members (21) have paid dues for the current year 2015. Two (2) members also brought their 2014 dues up

to date.

Current expenses have been minimal, involving only monthly bank fees and a reimbursement for office supplies

needed for the treasurer’s activity. Various expenses are expected during the oncoming season.

Dues for 2015 are currently due—a recent mailing provided a dues statement and an addressed envelope to make

it easy to take care of this. Sixteen members have not yet remitted.

Our bank balance as of this writing on 3/20/2015 is $7,213.00

the Museum’s displays (see below)

The Northern California / Lake Tahoe Chapter of the Antique & Classic Boat Society invite you to attend the 2015 South Tahoe Wooden Boat Classic. For the eighth year, our chapter will host a boat show for charity at the

Tahoe Keys Marina in South Lake Tahoe on July 24th and 25th, 2015. This year’s theme, “50s & Fins“, will

honor those boats built between 1950 and 1959. The 1950s brought us wonderful finned cars, rock & roll, the

Chris Craft Cobra & Silver Arrow, the Arena Craft Barracuda, Elvis, James Dean, Ann Margaret and Marilyn

Monroe.

This year’s 43rd annual Concours d’ Elegance will again be staged at the historic Obexer’s Boat Company in

Homewood, Calif., on Lake Tahoe’s beautiful West Shore with the two-day show open to the public on Friday,

Aug. 7th, and Saturday, Aug. 8th. This year’s show will roar to life with the Marque Class featuring “Vintage V-12 – powered Watercraft.” With Lake Tahoe boasting more V-12 powered runabouts in regular use than any-

where else in the world, the 43rd annual Concours is sure to please the senses with not only rumbling power but

the awe-inspiring beauty synonymous with antique wooden boats.
