As with our nation, we prefer a peaceful transition of power! All indications suggest a smooth passage from Current President Michelle McGrath to our next President Donna Hurd. Following club tradition, we will honor this august event with a Roast of President Michelle at our June 28 meeting, which will be held at the Alliant Energy Center Exhibition Hall. In the Roast, you may anticipate a feast of celebration and entertainment. You already know of President Michelle’s professional and leadership skills. But... Do you know of her roots in the Pink House? Do you know who her celebrity crushes are? Do you know about her secret obsession with Texan inspired footwear? Most importantly, what will Michelle's legacy be when her Presidency ends? New members who joined our club under Michelle’s tenure have been working hard to prepare this year's Roast. They have offered their skills as researchers, authors, actors and coordinators. Special kudos to Casey Oelkers and Rebecca Prochaska, co-chairs of this year's Roast Committee. NOTE: The Roast Committee encourages members to wear cowboy boots to our June 28 Rotary meeting as we celebrate President Michelle's year as our president. To plan for sufficient seating, members bringing guests to our weekly meetings are asked to contact the Rotary office with the number of guests you plan to bring by Tuesday noon ( [email protected] or phone 255-9164). In Memory of Al Ripp We are sorry to report the news of the death of Rotary member Al Ripp who passed away on June 14 th following heart surgery. He was 59 years old. Al joined our Rotary Club in 2013, and he was Executive Director of Middleton Outreach Ministry. Within Rotary, he had been an important part of our Ethics Symposium Planning Committee as a liaison to participating schools. He was also incredibly active within our community. We extend our sympathies to his wife, Shari, and to his family. Our club has made a $100 gift in his name to our Madison Rotary Foundation to establish a memorial fund in his name. Anyone wishing to make a contribution to this memorial fund may do so via our website or mailing a donation to the Madison Rotary Foundation, 2 S. Carroll Street, Suite 255, Madison, WI 53703.

June 28 Annual Changing of the Guard/Roast Program at Alliant Energy Center’s Exhibition Hall At the end of each June, one faithful Madison Rotary Club President hands the gavel to his or her successor. As with our nation, we prefer a peaceful transition of power! All indications suggest a smooth passage from Current President Michelle McGrath to our next President Donna Hurd.

Twelve Members Attended Rotary International Convention in Atlanta, GA

Attending a Rotary International Convention helps you connect to the international aspects of Rotary, and it’s inspirational to hear about the projects and programs being carried out throughout the world. The 108th Rotary International Convention was held at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta, Georgia, from June 10 – 14, 2017. Among the 42,100 attendees from 174 countries and geographic areas were twelve members from our club: Donna Beestman, Jason Beren, John Bonsett-Veal, Larry Hands, Teresa Holmes, Dori Hosek, Donna Hurd, Pat Jenkins, Karen Kendrick-Hands, Sharyl Kato, Paul Riehemann and Mary Thompson. Participants at the convention attended plenary sessions and a variety of breakout sessions (including one on ESRAG). The House of Friendship was a gathering area with hundreds of booths that ranged from Rotary supplies and clothing to Rotary club projects to RI Fellowship Groups (including ESRAG staffed by our own members Paul Riehemann, Karen Kendrick-Hands and Larry Hands), plus entertainment and food. The Opening Session began with an impressive presentation of flags from the countries and geographic areas represented in Rotary. Rotary International President John Germ spoke as well as Ashton Kutcher who led a panel discussion on combatting human trafficking, and Jack Nicklaus, golf icon, spoke about being a Polio survivor. On this 100th anniversary year of The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International, there was a major announcement about the Polio Eradication effort when donors pledged $1 billion to end Polio. This is the largest global health initiative ever undertaken. John Cena, a Polio Champion, was emcee for this session. Included in the donors announced was Rotary International Foundation’s commitment to raising $50 million per year for the next three years, and Bill Gates announced that the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will extend its 2 to 1 match for the next three years. Another highlight of the convention was an opportunity for our members to meet three Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Tema-Meridan, Ghana which is the club we are partnering with for our Change HERstory project in Ghana. The 2018 Rotary International Convention will be held June 23 – 27 in Toronto, Canada. Consider attending! More information about the 2018 convention can be found at http://www.riconvention.org/en/toronto.

Make-up Rotary Meetings When You Travel Members Joe Loehnis and Taura Prosek (shown 2nd and 3rd from left) recently attended the New Territories Hong Kong Rotary Club luncheon and are pictured exchanging banners. Joe and Taura were on a global learning business trip with the UW evening MBA program and were able to fit a Rotary make-up into their schedule. Make-ups when traveling are a great way to connect with the communities you are visiting!

We appreciate the generous support of BMO Harris Bank which made this event possible, and we thank Ted Waldbillig, Tom Walker and Midwest Family Broadcasting for donating the excellent promotional radio advertising for this event.
