Kudos to Rafi! -Rising Stars - There were two rising stars from Cape Cod Tech last week. Patrick O'Neil, the head of the History Department, presented Katie Robel as the first Rising Star. She is a Senior in the Engineering Department. She is a Student Ambassador and is a true leader at the school. She is outgoing, pleasant, and a great student overall. Her career goals is to become a Civil Engineer upon graduating college. She is waiting for acceptance to various colleges this spring. The second Rising Star was William Foley, who was described as a humble, compassionate young man in the Information Technology shop. He is a top student academically and will be going to the New England Institute of Technology next year. Will gave a comedic presentation and commented that it was "Nice to be recognized finally!" Both students were humble, had a great sense of humor, and will represent Yarmouth, Cape Cod Tech, and Cape Cod well in their future endeavors. The guest speaker this week was Christina Tomasik, a sophomore at Lasalle college, and daughter of Dr. Tom Tomasik. She is an honors student at Lasalle and the Vice President of the non-profit organization "She's the First." "Education Gives every girl the chance to be the first", She's The First works towards sponsoring girls' education in developing countries. The organization's goal is to create leaders and global citizens and especially through the use of social media. She's The First supports girls who are first in their families to graduate high school and train students everywhere to be global citizens. How are they actually doing it? Chapters are found across colleges and universities. A year-long sponsorship of a girl is $400. If a girl is renewed, scholarship for additional years is $100. Currently, there are 1,000 scholars kept in school and 300+ crowd fundraisers through campus chapters and private organizations and community groups. She's The First holds 2 annual fundraisers, but the Lasalle chapter does 4 more fundraisers annually. They hold a cupcake baking challenge which nets several scholarships. There are 225 campus chapters mostly in the US and Christina's goal is to bring a high school chapter to DY. In the 5 year history of She's The First at Lasalle, the group is currently sponsoring 2 students in Tanzania and 2 in Nepal. They have conducted several important fundraisers and conferences to spread the word regarding the organization including an International Women's Month Gala - combining a celebration, advocacy, and what it means to be a women now and what it means to advocate for women globally. The group also held a She's The First Leadership Conference which included a panel and a keynote speaker, and 4 session speakers including our own Jackie Carnevalli. It is clear the organization and Lasalle chapter will continue to do great work and we look forward to hearing of their future successes in helping women around the world!
