For many young adults and adults wanting to return to employment or higher education, then the place to be was the Maltby Leisure Centre on the 31st of January, where an all day employment event was held. Many organisations such as Job Centre Plus, Sheffield University, Northern College and The Open University attended to inspire and encourage anyone hoping to return to employment or higher education. Maltby Academy were on hand

to promote community learning by demonstrating digital photography and photo manipulation. The University of Sheffield in conjunction with the Aim Higher project hoped to “encourage and raise awareness” amongst adults in South Yorkshire of higher education prospects with “Preparing to Succeed”, a selection of free four day courses at the University on the 15th, 17th, 22nd and 24th of March. Northern College advertised

their facilities and courses including diplomas, which run from September to May, and three day taster courses in areas such as Creative Writing, History, Maths and English. For more mature students, The Open University provided information on a variety of courses which attract over 180,000 students in the UK alone, being the largest university in Western Europe. As the OU doesn’t require any formal qualifications, it is now attracting students of various ages as it is “flexible”, and boast lower fees. With various vacancies at the ready for eager attendees, Job Centre Plus highlighted their skills and determination at making job hunting an easy process by providing leaflets, bringing a selection of open vacancies, and having someone on hand to research more specific vacancies to “help people move back into employment”. “Next Step”, based around Maltby and surrounding areas, help people back into employment by aiding with CV’s, job applications, careers and childcare. Entertainment was also provided by “Pizzatainment” boys Danny West and Kieron Goult, who’s pizza dough spinning talents wowed attendees, prompting some to get involved in the mess! This event was vital in encouraging and giving hope to people that no matter what their circumstances, getting back into employment and education is achievable with help from amazing organisations and determination. Well-known allotment-holder, Twinnie Hart, who died on 7th January aged 87, truly merited an extraordinary floral tribute. Provided by son Paul and daughters Lesley, Diane and Susan, it depicted the wheelbarrow from which he marketed his produce. It was inscribed to ‘Our Dad, the best daffodil seller ever’. After the funeral, the family placed it at the corner of Grange Lane and Norfolk Place, in the spot where Twinnie used to stand with his barrow to delight his customers with bunches of freshly harvested flowers and bags of delicious vegetables. True to Twinnie’s memory,

the tribute, which was exquisitely crafted by florist Joanne Dilger, included a copy of ‘The Sun’, his favourite read and flower wrapper. For most of his life, Twinnie lived in Maltby. On retirement, aged 60, he and his brother held the record as the longest-serving twins at Maltby Pit. Their devotion to allotments began at the age of 14 when they took on a plot and at one time Twinnie cultivated four. He will, perhaps, be best remembered, by his customers, for his bunches of daffodils, Sweet Williams and spray chrysanthemums. May he rest in peace. © Alice Rodgers 2011

Following their success in raising nearly £2000 in 2009 for Maltby Juniors F.C. and the Yorkshire Air Ambulance by riding across country from Southport to Hornsea on the Trans Pennine Trail, the Haynook Mountain Bike Challenge Team needed a new challenge for 2010. It was decided to ride from London to Paris in aid of Help for Heroes. The team took in the Commonwealth War Grave in Giverny where there is a

tribute to the crew of a Lancaster Bomber that crashed just outside the village in 1944. The amount collected from the pledges of support is £3,516.50, which has been paid in full into the Help for Heroes charity fund. The Haynook London 2 Paris Mountain Bike Challenge Team would like to say a heartfelt thanks to all of our sponsors for your great support for this very worthwhile Charity. COLD CALLING

Sir

May I, through your ‘Letter Pages’ take this opportunity to remind people and (especially those who are aged) to always be aware of who may be knocking on your door, especially throughout the long, dark evening hours. In the recent past, my wife and I answered a knock on our door, the time was approximately 7.15 PM, the gentleman standing there was tall and smartly dressed. This man was ‘cold calling’ and said that he was a surveyor and asked if we had received our grant. I challenged this man with a number of questions then asked him if he had seen the ‘No Cold Calling’ sign, he then left. ‘Cold Calling’ can cause stress and anxiety at any time. My advice to everyone is. Please do not open your door to anyone unless you know who it is or if you are expecting visitors, make sure you have a ‘No Cold Calling’ sticker on your door. Or why not form a ‘Neighbourhood Watch’ group with your friends and neighbours. If you do have a caller and you are having problems with getting them to leave, tell them that you will send for the police and make sure you have a safety chain on your door and always use it. Never be frightened to call the police on 01142 20 20 20 at any time and also inform you neighbours and make them aware of what has happened. Maltby Town Councillor. Keith. F. Stringer. (Community Crimefighter.)32 Bevan Crescent. Maltby

MALTBY INDEPENDENTS Sir

Maltbys’ Independents - well where to start? Cllr D J Brennan seems as good a place to start as anywhere (Letters, Rotherham Advertiser 24th December). Is there any connection with this Independent councillor and the Zion Church or the other independents he’s writing on behalf of ? I would say yes, there is. How do I come to this opinion. Well, when Dave was standing for council I asked him if he would be truly independent and would not be part of a group. His answer was he’d be totally independent. What threw me was the day his manifesto was delivered to my door. Was it Dave delivering ? No, it was a member of the Zion church - very independent Dave. Cllr Brennan is upset that the Advertiser said that MTC is suing itself and that this is not the case. If it is not, then who IS suing the council? What has “being an official of that church” got to do with anything? These councillors are the ones who represent the church at council meetings, aren’t they? He also says that they worship at the Zion church. Where is the Zion Church? Is it in Maltby? Maltby Independents - Karen Usher Chair of Maltby Town Council, Ben Slade Vice Chair. Notice Karen Usher was one of the people who wanted the town council disbanded along with Cllr Brennan. Funny that. Two wanting the council abolished now both councillors. So Karen Usher was co-opted onto the council, is now chair of the council and has attended four meetings since last May, leaving the way clear for the vice

chair. How did these two members take over from Councillor Jenny Andrews who was doing such a good job at the time may I say. That’s an easy one for me because they have “the edge in the Dunn” - their words, though it has not been explained what was meant by this. That was the last time these independent councillors turned out in full for anything, just to vote these two on. One of these other so called independent councillors has now resigned. Since then Cllr June Madden has been removed from the council for not attending meetings under the six month and one day rule. I tried to question Cllr Brennan on his “edge in the Dunn” comments and again was told “ I’m not answering that man’s questions”. The voting papers for election to the board of Maltby Community Development Trust, based at The Wesley Centre are out, and again Cllr Brennan’s name appears. Isn’t it strange that Cllr Brennan who was voted onto the council to represent the people of Maltby, now says the best way to do this is by being a director of this council bashing tribe. It’s no surprise to me that he is choosing this direction to go, but isn’t it rude to ask people to vote him onto the council and also onto the CDT? If Cllr Brennan was voted on, then MCDT would have two serving councillors on their board - Cllr David Brennan and Cllr Ben Slade, Vice Chair of Maltby Town Council. A conflict of interests I think. At the MTC meeting on 13th January 2011 I attempted to question Cllr Brennan on this and was told by the Vice - Chair to “Take it up with the CDT, it’s not a council matter”. I persisted and was told to “shut up”. At this same meeting we were informed by Cllr A Foster that he has been co-opted onto the board of the CDT

as a director. Now we have two serving directors and one up for election. There is only four months to go to the next election for Maltby Town Council. At present, certain councillors appear to be a group within the council. Wouldn’t it be nice if those who are standing for election say exactly what their intentions are and then the people of Maltby can know who is truly independent or not. I hope that Cllr Brennan in particular, can answer the many questions that have been put to him over the past months so that the public can decide who is going to represent them in the years to come.

Yours sincerely,

Stewart Platt (Labour Party member) 158 Greenland Avenue, Maltby

SELF-HELP IN THE SNOW

Sir

With reference to the letter in last month’s maltby.news Snow Thanks, as a resident of Ascension Close elderly residents complex I would like to say we had no help of any kind in the recent heavy snow. Older and infirm residents were virtual prisoners in their own homes for several days. One of our neighbours, a one-legged gentleman, was clearing snow with a dustpan to get to the road. Eventually all the paths were cleared by some of the fitter residents with makeshift tools, a veritable Dads’ Army. No help, no grit, no hope. If it snows again as heavily God help us, as the Council will not!

POWELLS BUS SERVICE

Sir

I am responding to the letter in the last issue of the newspaper regarding Powells bus service. I use Powells regularly for trips and for

regular travel, I called them to find out what was happening with the bus service after seeing the letter last month. They advised they had not removed buses from the timetable but changed the service due to roadworks in Maltby and Doncaster. This amended service would continue for three to five weeks until the roadworks had been completed and the change was intended to help bus users and still make everywhere accessible while the roadworks were going on. Through the roadwork period the 18a bus would go one way to get to Braithwell up the back

lane and the 18 bus would go up Grange Lane and through Stainton. The service should still be running every half hour but Powells hope users will be understanding if there are some delays due to the ongoing roadworks. The telephone number for Powell’s is 01709 700900 and if you require and information regarding the bus service they will be happy to help.

St Mary’s Catholic Primary School held a Christmas holiday writing competition in which children were asked to write to the children in their link school in The Gambia to explain about how we celebrate Advent and Christmas at home and at school. Mrs Dunphy, one of the Foundation Governors volunteered to be a judge. This proved to be a very difficult job as each and every one of the

letters had something good incorporated. Mrs Dunphy persevered and eventually decided upon the following winners: Key Stage 1 (Y1 & Y2) Lisa Manning-Rodgers and Emily Williamson Lower Key Stage 2 (Y3 & Y4) Tomas Fragola-Hunt and Elizabeth Kent Upper Key Stage 2 (Y5 & Y6) Madison Shield and James Taylor Overall winner – Charlotte McGloin pictured with Mrs Dunphy (above)

Maltby Local History Society’s January meeting,on the topic of reminiscence recording, was led by, Rotherham Oral History expert, Tony Dodsworth. Mr Dodsworth defined the objective of oral history as being the gathering of information which would otherwise be lost. One of its strengths lay in capturing memories of the matters which nobody would think to write about but which bring life to documentary history. He described the kind of equipment which had proved most useful to him when interviewing elderly people and gave much practical advice about what questions

to ask. Also included was guidance on transcribing material to prepare it for publication. Members then enjoyed his presentation on Rawmarsh and Parkgate in which he skilfully tied reminiscences to archive photographs in order to cast new light on his subject. By popular demand, the Society’s next meeting sees the return of Brian Morris with his amazing collection of images and descriptions of Fred Kitchen’s world. It will take place at Maltby Library Meeting Room starting at 7pm on Thursday 17th February. For further information please ring 812035.

On Wednesday 2nd February, six members of Maltby Environmental Group braved the cold wind to undertake a town centre walkabout. Among the matters monitored were littering, potholes and the state of Manor Field and Coronation Park. Serious concern was expressed about the path from Maltby Services Centre to Manor Road, the derelict condition of the Queens Hotel and the deterioration to the play area in Coronation Park. On the bright side, members

were glad to witness the commencement of works on the Wesley Centre’s green energy scheme and on the restoration of the Crossley Monument. (see story page 3 of this issue) A detailed report is in preparation and this will be forwarded, in due course, both to Maltby Town Council and to other relevant agencies.

Further information about the group’s activities is available by telephoning 812035. Alice Rodgers

February 2011

Maltby Academy Principal David Sutton has returned from a visit to London with more details of the £11.1m capital investment announced last month. In an exclusive interview with the maltby.news Mr Sutton said “It is now clear where the figure of £11.1m comes from, and which formulae have been used to arrive at that sum. It includes amounts for ICT, furniture and some of the peripheral requirements. We are not talking about an entire new school, but there will be some new build, some refurbishment and potential demolition of some of the out-dated buildings. The historic frontage of the school will get investment to restore the building. Importantly the buildings will receive much needed investment and will be fit for learning in the 21st Century.” The school will be working with architects over the coming weeks to re-visit the plans prior to a wide-ranging consultation. “We feel that during the summer term we will be able to engage in that consultation with students, parents, other schools and the wider community.,” said Mr Sutton. “We hope to start preliminary works before September.” The Principal explained that Partnership for Schools are committed to reducing bureaucracy in the Building Schools For The Future programme in order to maximise the capital programme. “Although the campus vision will not be realized with this level of investment, our ambition is still to work with the family of schools in Maltby, and the idea of 0-19 learning is still at the forefront of our thinking,” said Mr Sutton.

A key priority remains to place the Business and Enterprise specialism at the heart of the school with the potential for community access. Although a plan to move Hilltop School onto a new campus has been abandoned, a building project with Hilltop, not connected to the new capital investment, is already underway. This involves an Art and Technology space which will be used by Hilltop students two to three days a week. “Working with Hilltop remains a major commitment,” said Mr Sutton. It is still not clear what will happen to the proposed relocation of junior schools in Maltby. “This development has to act as a catalyst for further academic improvement. The good news is that with six months to go our early entry figures already match those achieved at the end of 2009. Maltby students continue to achieve in the Academy on many fronts” Mr Sutton added.

On the 5th and 6th March 2011, Maltby Town Council will be holding a photographic exhibition on the Social History of Maltby. Following the high level of interest in the photographs shown at the Horticultural show, it was decided that in addition to the photographs, videos of local people relation their memories of Maltby should be exhibited. The video diaries will be an ongoing project and if anyone would like to record their experiences, please contact Cllr Jenny Andrews or the Town Council office in the Edward Dunn. Over the last six months, a variety of old photographs have appeared on the Town Council pages in the maltby.news. One photograph has caused the most interest by far, is of the Byford girls in 1958. Therefore, Maltby Town Council would like to extend a special invitation to all the Byford Girls, who are available, to come along and officially open the exhibition. The Crossley Memorial will soon be restored to its former

glory and a section in the exhibition will be dedicated to Dr. Crossley. The original lamp will be included in the display. Many people have contributed their photographs, experiences, expertise and time to produce the exhibition. Particular thanks go to Lauren Astbury and Stewart

Platt for their hard work and involvement. Please come along and be part of this special event – its time to CELEBRATE MALTBY and be proud of our heritage.

AN EXHIBITION OF MALTBY SOCIAL HISTORYby MALTBY TOWN COUNCIL

On Friday the 28th of January, the New Life Christian Centre was visited by Jose Henriguez. Jose is one of the 33 miners who was trapped in the ‘ill fated’ Chilean mine recently. Jose’s interpreter was Mr Alf Cooper. Mr Cooper is the Chaplain to the President of Chile. Mr Henriguez spoke in detail of his experience of how he felt when he realised and accepted the fact that he and a number of other men were trapped. He explained how they searched every tunnel to try to find some way out of the mine, but to no avail. Through his explanations, it appears that Jose took on the task of becoming the leader of this group and arranged for the fair rationing of the food and water. Jose is a natural leader of men who found solace through his beliefs and religious strengths. As the days past, Jose would hold daily prayer meetings, initially with a small number of men but the longer the men were trapped, the more men would join in. Jose spoke of the drilling. He said that they could hear the drilling as first attempts to reach them

failed. He went on to speak of the despair when they realised that the drill had gone past them. This was the time when his natural leadership was tested but he said that through the power of prayer he managed to keep the men together. Jose never lost hope which he shared with the men. When they heard the drilling again, they prayed that the drill would not pass them. Jose said that the drill was going to pass them but fortunately, the drill hit some hard rock and veered off and broke through into the chamber where they were all gathered. He said that it was decided that the young men would be rescued first, then the sick then the rest. Jose was the 28th man. As Jose’s presentation moved towards it’s conclusion it was evident that Jose, who had come from a religious background, had turned to his faith and had asked for help. This man is convinced that through his faith, trust and prayer that he and his workmate are alive today to tell their story and all this is thanks to the ‘34TH man. By Keith Stringer.

It’s good to see that a few things don’t change. On 15th December 1965 pensioners enjoyed a Christmas Lunch in the Edward Dunn. Forty six years later, here are some Maltby pensioners enjoying a New Year Celebration lunch provided by the Wentworth Valley Area, Community Payback, South Yorkshire Police and Maltby Town Council.

Sixteen Year old Maltby Academy “A” Level student Niaomi Twiss has won the “bowling award” for the 2010 season for the Yorkshire Girls Under 17’s team. Niaomi collected the award at the Yorkshire Women’s and Girls Cricket Presentation Evening, which was held recently at the Yorkshire Cricket Centre at Headingley. All rounder, Niaomi had a fine season for Yorkshire in 2010. She took 18 wickets for the under 17’s against various other counties producing some fine displays of quick bowling. Niaomi also made several telling contributions with the bat in the National Championships including a good knock in the quarter finals against Kent, which unfortunately was in vain as a weakened Yorkshire succumbed to a fine team. Her best innings for Yorkshire last season was probably, however whilst on tour in Ireland where she scored 33 against Ireland “A” Women’s team at Rush Cricket Ground. Ireland “A” compete in the English National County Championships. Niaomi received the call from Yorkshire Women’s First Team at the start of the 2010 season and took part a pre season friendly against Hymers Boys College from Hull. To her great surprise and excitement, she was asked later in the season to act as “12th Man” for the Women’s team for the Division 1 County Championship match against Berkshire. This involved an overnight stay in Reading and provided tremendous experience for the young player. Her Yorkshire team mates included England players Katherine Brunt and Danielle Hazell; whilst Berkshire boasted three current England Internationals;

Heather Knight, Isa Guha and world ranked number 1 batsman, Claire Taylor. The Maltby girl plays most of her club cricket for Maltby Miners Welfare Cricket Club at Muglet Lane. She played the majority of the games for the Men’s Second Team in 2010. She captured 23 wickets, which included 6 for 23 against Dearne Cricket Club. She also made several important contributions with the bat; including a score of 34 in a match winning partnership of 90 with her dad, Keith, against Oughtibridge. She also turned out to good effect with both bat and ball for the boys under 15’s and under 17’s teams at Maltby during last season. She played important roles in helping to secure several victories with her great friends in these Maltby Junior sides. Finally Niaomi played women’s club Cricket on several occasions for Treeton Cricket Club in the White Rose League and Midlands League. Many of these teams did not particularly relish facing her bowling; whilst with the bat she averaged over 70 including three half centuries from only five innings. This helped Treeton to various victories including two against their arch rivals Anston Cricket Club, which Niaomi used to play for. Niaomi’s ambitions for the 2011 season are to bowl faster, take more wickets, score more runs and hopefully to play women’s County Cricket. KH
