I love Winter in Margaret River. I have traveled and lived all over the world and am always drawn back to this beautiful region. Home is where the heart is, and Margaret River has a lot of heart and soul! The fire has been welcomed in our home for about two months now; the 'red' supply is diminishing; the air is fresh and crisp; its nice to get a wave without the hassle; everything is looking lush and green; its getting harder to get out of bed at 6am and easier to wear my beanie and Ugg boots for most of the day........

Its lovely getting out'n'about and feeling how relaxed this time of the year is - it seems everyone is welcoming the rain and embracing the peace it brings. A time of nurturing, replenishing, revival and rest. We are a 'blessed' community to be surrounded by all that we need to make our Winter just that!

Beautiful natural surroundings, fresh local produce from our land and our ocean, "the wine is great", there is always something to do if we are feeling for it - this is what gives Margaret River such heart and then the down to earth friendliness of our people bring the soul!

Winter in Margaret river for me captures the essence of why we are all here...............Rug up and Enjoy! Tammy x

Peter Moir

As an artist I am inspired by the ever-changing south west beach scapes and forests surrounding my Margaret River home; by the vibrant colours and stark, raw, rugged beauty of Karijini, the Pilbara and our north-west; and the energy, contours and life of the human form and face.I enjoy using a diversity of media; painting, sculpting and sketching my fascination with the natural world and with the human form.

Dave Mann is singer/songwriter from Margaret River, WA. He has been writing, recording and performing his songs for the past 10 years all around Australia and Internationally. With 6 cd's under his belt, Dave has forged a loyal and broad fan base in the folk/roots music scene.

When did you start getting musical Dave, is it in your blood?Yeah I have to say i'm one of the lucky ones that has music in my blood. My Grandmother was a great singer and organist and Grandfather was a pianist. Both my parents are musical. My Dad is a great songwriter… so yeah i had a good start. I started playing the guitar at around age 10 although Mum tells me i was making up songs since I could talk.

Who would you say are your Strongest influences?I'd have to say my parents are up there as influences. I'm also a big fan of Paul Kelly, Tim Rogers, Eric Bibb, Jeff Lang, Daniel Lanois and the list could go on and on… I love loads of different types of music. I find there's something to offer in everything i listen too. Except for most of the crap thats on the radio these days.

What inspires you to write songs Dave?I get asked this question quite a bit but it doesn't really come with a very exciting answer… for me, i need to be moved emotionally to write a song about something. the subject needs to get my blood boiling, or jerk a tear or two, or lift me up to ecstatic highs… And there are so many things that can happen in day to day life that can evoke these feelings… i think it's more about allowing yourself to be moved by something or simply being open to it in order to get a song out or any art for that matter.

Where is your favourite gig venue?I love the Fly By Night Club, in Fremantle. I've never had a bad gig there and it always sounds great. You get so well looked after there either as a punter or a performer. Just a great venue - run by music loving people.

All time favourite song Dave? This question has me stuck. I can't nail it down to one. From Little Things Big Things Grow, How Too Make Gravy, Light Of Day. Na can't do it.

What do you think of the latest music being played commercially Dave?

To be honest, the majority of it doesn't really pulls my heart strings. Just nothingness. Superficial. There are some exceptions but the majority is throw away disposable music. The best music lies just under the surface. There are some absolutely brilliant songwriters and musicians just tucked away from the main stream. Thats where the gold is. It's like good food. You can drive down the main street and all you see is Mc'donalds, Hungry Jacks and a million other fast food places. But just tucked around the corner you'll a find a little gem. Someone who cooks with passion and love - because they just want to. Not for the money. It feels good to eat that food because it's been cooked with love and soul. Music is the same. Most of the stuff I hear. And i say most but not all, is "fast food music".Favourite instrument and why?Singing. Once upon a time I would have said guitar but i'm really just loving singing and good gutsy singers that can really sing.

Do you think Margaret River has a good music scene?I think for the size of the town here i think it's quite a healthy scene. The Settlers Tav have been flying the original music flag for years and they do it so well. But i think maybe another few venues would be nice. The same could be said Australia wide to be honest. Need more small venues. There are too many regulations now that make it uneconomical to run a small bar or club which is really troubling the original music

scene at a grass roots level. The "up and comings" need somewhere to play and build their fan bases. It's becoming increasingly difficult to find venues to play at around the country unless you can fill an auditorium. Anyway. rant. Margs has a good scene.

Greatest act of all time? The act of kindness.

Whats next for you?My wife and I are expecting a baby soon. That's whats next for me! That'll keep us busy for a little while… But I also have a new album that I'm working on. It's a full band live studio album… Where we just played it all live in the studio with very minimal overdubs… and really exciting because i haven't done an album like that for ages! and it's sounds really great and raw and real. I can't wait to launch it!

Thankyou kindly Dave!

Vintage Report: They are all saying "2011 looks like a great vintage for Margaret River" Very high day and night-time temperatures allowed our white grapes to ripen two to three weeks earlier than usual, promoting early flavour development, good acid levels and well balanced flavoursome white wines. The Reds have also responded to the higher than normal summer temperatures with high early baum'e (sugar) levels and well developed flavours and tannins. We are predicting the 2011 vintage to be a great one! What's happening in the Vineyard? Here at the Clown Fish vineyard we employ Organic and Biodynamic grape production techniques that promote environmental sustainability. This means that we use natural means to control weeds, pests and diseases as well as keeping the soil healthy. To do this we manufacture our own compost from the grape marc (seeds, pips, skins, bunch

storks and stems) left over from the wine production, along with a little cow manure from the neighbours dairy. This we spread through out the vineyard at this time year to feed the soil microbes and bugs that in turn support and feed our vines in the growing seasons. This is the corner stone of our fertility programme and is responsible for the rich and intense fruit flavours that we are now coming through in our wines.Winter is also the time for pruning, so we all don the wellies and the wet weather gear and get stuck into it, until about the end of August. We have the sheep that we run in the vineyard throughout winter to keep us company, they keep the winter weeds down, turn it into manure and spread all about for us as well. This grazing also allows the clover and rye grasses to get away to a good start in spring, this we use as a permanent sward under our vines (No herbicides needed)

A famous and unique experience in the South West Region

Page 19: The Margaret River Guide E Magazine Winter 2011

Welcome to what is becoming known as one of Australia’s most exciting breweries located in the heart of the iconic

Margaret River region. Having recently upgraded its brewing facility and venue, beer lovers can expect great things

from this proudly Australian owned and run company.

The Margaret River region is synonymous with wine. But a unique brewer is offering an alternative to those

foundering in the great wine lake of the southwest. Colonial is a family oriented brewery   that is nestled

amongst vineyards, quaint farms and bordering the Bramley National Park, the Colonial Brewing Company is

changing expectations of both the region and of Australian beer.

Colonial beer represents the triumph of substance over style. This

craft brewery is founded on the belief that beer making is a

cornerstone of civilisation.

Each brew is created according to the company’s motto, festina

lente – hasten slowly. While the beers are brewed with skill and

innovation, it is the care and passion of the brewer that elevate

the Colonial brewing process from a science to an art form.

“At Colonial you’ll never find any half measures,” said head

brewer Mal Secourable. “Handmade in small batches under

stringently controlled conditions, we are able to consistently

produce beers of great distinction, proudly paying homage to

the ancient and learned craft of the Brewers Guild.” It is this

approach that has seen Colonial named Champion Australian

Small Brewery in 2006, 2007 as well as Champion International

Small Brewery in 2007. Colonial’s signature beer, Kolsch, has

drawn the attention of beer show judges with its clean,

refreshing style and flavours of lemon sorbet , passion fruit and

herb. In 2009 Kolsch won the Premier’s Trophy Best for WA Beer,

the Barrett Burston Trophy for the Best Draught Ale, and the

Cryer Malt Trophy for the Best Draught Ale.

Their Best in Show for the Kolsch represents a world-class

example of a top-class beer,” said the 2009 chief judge Brendan

Varis. “WA beer drinkers should be grateful and happy to have

beers of this quality available to them locally. It’s great to know we

have this kind of beer in our own backyard.”

No one can argue that Margaret River and surfing go hand in hand.

Home to some of the largest pro surfing waves outside of Hawaii, it is a draw card for surfers worldwide. Our pristine coastline and clean waters, not to mention over 75 top class surf breaks makes us a little spoiled.

So, its not surprising that Margaret River is full of surfing talent. Winter is here and some of the biggest swells are on their way. The film crew for the latest surf film just lost all their film gear when a jet ski was bold over.

Congratulations Jerome Forrest on winning the prestigious WA Open Mens State Titles and becoming State Champion and best of luck in the Surfing Professionals World Qualifying Series.

Congratulations also to Shaun Green winning the last comp in Yallingup, seen here surfing on a Sunova.

Over to you now to get out there and enjoy all that the best Margaret River Winter Surf has. Now that all the holiday crowds have gone you will be sure to have the waves to yourself.

Local Real EstateThe evolution of the Margaret River Brand and the changing face of the Beach Shack!

From American Whalers and Sealers secretly plying the coast, through early European settlement, the timber pioneers of the Yelverton’s and Power’s through to the poverty stricken Groupies and Butter Milk Dairy Farmers to later day uses of Surf, food, wine and song the Margaret River “Brand” has encapsulated many aspects of its colourful heritage in local attractions.  And what has happened to the “Beach House” in this time? Ask anyone native sandgroper over 45 years old the question “Tell me about your favourite holidays as a kid?” and immediately “Rotto” springs to mind with a commentary on ultra basic cottages, sand all over the floor, no cars, salty beach towels over the balustrades, rise with the sun and fall with the moon, BBQ between the flies and the mozzies and hose the place out with a high pressure hose before you leave on the ferry! Whilst we laugh about it – I always strive to get people to focus on what they loved the best about their childhood holidays before they start their process of property selection. Comments like “The motorbikes at uncle Georges farm, fishing at Rotto, swimming at the Basin, fish and chips at Mandurah” give rise to destinations like 2 Ha at Margaret’s, a cottage at Gracetown, the calm waters of Geographe Bay or a light winery lunch at Leeuwin. Sure – we’re more affluent, the eating and drinking habits have evolved in keeping with our Mediterranean climate and an increasingly Asian influence on out taste buds and we’ve take to wine like blowflies to BBQ’s but no matter how much money we throw at these beach houses, the best loved, most used and abused are the ones where no sleep is lost through sand being walked through the house, fish cleaned in the laundry trough or a glass of red gracing the floor! Beach houses in WA are about how the house relates to the outside environment, not about how you lock yourself inside the four external walls – the further comment “I don’t want to feel like I’m in suburbia – that’s what I’m trying to get away from” is an oft’ repeated line. So – as you ponder the question of securing a little patch of this paradise for yourself as most do when they venture to our region, can I urge you to go back to the basics of “What made your childhood holidays so special” and then address this rather than the bricks and mortar! Invariably we find that the times we remember most fondly were when life was simple, the house was small enough to clean in 2 secs, and most of all the mortgage didn’t handcuff us to the office desk! So often we find that the beach houses which get the most use are the ones where the burden of ownership is the least.

It’s the region which gives us the charm – not the size of the home theatre – in fact the bigger the home theatre, the larger the disincentive to immerse yourself IN the region – so Go Back to the Basics, and then go shopping, not impulse buy and then find massive cognitive dissonance over a bad purchase! It’s a paradigm shift to focus outside rather than inside when buying a beach house, but don’t dress it up – this is for the weekends and holidays plus retirement, not for the mundane 9 to 5!
