Shown above with a recent sample of his marine taxidermy is George Lee whose Costa Mesa shop now mounts more game fish for fishermen all over the globe than any operation of its kind this side of the Mississippi.

The marlin shown, which was caught off New Zealand, measures 15' and weighed 1,107 lbs. - the largest ever taken with rod and reel. The larges t marlin ever recorded ( also mounted by Mr. Lee) weighed over 1,100 lbs. and is now in Hawaii.

A pioneer in modern methods of taxidermy Mr. Lee, with whom it all began 25 years ago in Hawaii as a

hobby, regards his entry into the field as not really getting off the ground until he developed a special process. The process ( still exclusively his ) makes it possible for him to soften and res tore any fish skin received by him in practically any condition.

Although a fish to be mounted may arrive at his shop fresh or frozen, it may also arrive as a shrivelled up mass of dried skin. It is essentially his ability to restore a fish skin to its original shape and contour, Mr. Lee feels, that allows him to offer a genuine mount

Workers in the mounting of game fish find tlwt each fish to be mounted brings with it its own set of problems.

The shrivelled skin held by Mr. Lee was once - and will eventually again be - that of a beautiful and lifelike dolphin. Pile of skins in background have already undergone part of restoration process.

Skinning marlin which has arrived at shop intact is first step in the taxidermy process.

WORKING BOAT A hard working boat, and one long

familiar to Marina del Rey boatowners, is the tiny tug "Armanda," operated since its opening for business here by Windward Yacht & Repair, Inc.

Now 47 years old, the little 30' tug ( shown above with Ben Sirota at the wheel ) was one of two built on the wes t coast in 1921. The other was lost at sea while in use as a deep water fishing boat.

"Armanda" - still bearing her original name, after her first owner's mother - has spent her entire life as a harbor tug, and has in her time .;inglehandedly towed or moved an estimated 15,000 boats . Since being

What's New in the Jetty Set?

When a marina activity grows until it products traffic jams, supports two ice cream trucks and two lunch wagons, you might want to be brought up to date on it. The activity is onlooking from the north jetty and Rick, chef of one of the wagons, even purveys charcoal-barbecued hamburgers. ( "Some people complain about the price - 65 cen ts - but they keep coming back. I'm going to start corning here on weekdays, too.")

Some of the onlookers are newcomers - from Kansas ("We brought a daysailer with us."), Miami ( "Isn't it kind of chilly here for boating?"). Some live nearby and, especially during the week, a number are working out problems - couples and individuals, business and professional people ( 'Tm a writer, thinking out a plot.").

Others are there to fish , still others to simply relax and enjoy the scene. There was a steamship agent ( "The L.A. harbor is more interesting."), a metal shop owner, students, retired people, a waiter, a carpenter.

The carpenter was wearing a yachting cap, and many other members of the jetty set were dreaming - ''I've bought two books on navigation laws, etc.," "We're undecided between a Santana and a Columbia 22." "We're thinking about building our own cruiser."

On the whole, they seem to prefer power boats - "I want to fish," "Sailboats look like they are about to fall over all the time," 'Tve seen sailboats tw-n over out there."

While some problems are being solved on the jetty, others are being generated - "He'd love to have a boat, but I get seasick just thinking about it," 'Tm scared to death of the water but she wants a boat," "I want a sailboat but she wants a power boat."

TELL OUR ADVERT ISERS YOU SAW IT I N THE DINGHY

So, the next time your slip rental is raised again, take your problem down to the jetty. Perhaps you'll find somebody who wants a boat just like yours. More likely, you'll be hypnotized all over again by the idea of having a boat gliding down the channel to the sea. And, these days, you have to pay 65 cents even for a good, charcoal-barbecued hamburger.

TAXIDERMIST Continued

of each fisherman's catch, rather than an approximation of it.

Based in Costa Mesa for the past nine years ( with a branch in Hawaii) Mr. Lee's marine taxidermy shop now occupies over 10,000 sq. ft. of floor space, employs 16 people ( including two sons he has trained in his art) and turns out from eight to ten thousand mounted specimens each year.

While many of the fish thus preserved are large or notable in one way or another, almost as many are not, except perhaps for one particular fisherman ( or his small son or daughter). Among small fish mounted by Mr. Lee have been a sailfish weighing a mere 8 ounces, some grunion, and several smelt.
